  • AFs: Mumbai switch offs begin; Kolkata quo vadis?

AFs: Mumbai switch offs begin; Kolkata quo vadis?

MUMBAI: With Delhi under control now, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is focusing increasingly on the other two metros to ensure that all the consumer application forms (CAFs) come in to the MSOs.

Following a meeting held on 2 August with MSOs operating in Mumbai and Kolkata, a decision has been taken that the time for carrots is over, now one needs to use the stick to get customers to get moving on their CAFs. And that stick is like Delhi is switching off their cable TV service, if the CAF is not yet in.

“There will be no further extensions like in the past,” says a senior TRAI official. “In fact, the switch offs have already begun from 3 August. The process for switching off the set top boxes will take at least four to five days because we are talking about a huge number.”

Hathway Cable & Datacom MD and CEO Jagdish Kumar agrees that his network has started switching off subscribers who are being tardy from 3 August. “But the process will be tedious,” he says. “So far, we have managed to collect 80 per cent of the forms duly filled.”

Indiantelevision.com spoke to another three MSOs operating in the financial capital and all of them stated that CAF collection was between 70 and 80 per cent. Going by that yardstick, it appears as if cable TV subscribers don’t seem to be too disturbed about the stick, as the numbers mentioned by MSOs to indiantelevision.com even a month ago were in that range. Could they be opting for a DTH connection? We do not know, but a media observer, says that it could be a possibility.

The TRAI official says that Kolkata should not expect to be treated with kid’s gloves. “When Delhi can meet the deadline why not Kolkata?” he questions. “We are sure that Kolkata will be able to meet the 23 August deadline as it does not have any other option.”

Well cable TV operators and subscribers in Kolkata, that’s as ominous a warning as you can get!

  • Mipcom/MipTV reach out to Mumbai’s content community

Mipcom/MipTV reach out to Mumbai’s content community

MUMBAI: The Mumbai leg of Reed Midem’s Mipcom and MipTV road show went off like a dream with an attendance from about 80 professionals from the world of television and digital content. It was addressed by Reed Midem international business development director Ted Baracos, Asia sales manager Paul Barbaro and Indian representative (and indiantelevision.com founder & CEO) Anil Wanvari.

The theme like the other two venues was “Can Indian content leave its stamp on the world?” But unlike Delhi and Hyderabad, the attendees were primarily professionals from TV and digital content production, broadcast syndication and distribution.

TV producers were represented by Shyamashish Bhattachharrya, JD Majethia, Sumeet Mittal, Rakesh Paswan, Abhigyan and Mrinal Jha, Sudhir Sharma, Lalit Sharma, Asad Abid, Ram Talkit, Rahul Sarangi and Roopak Saluja. Zee TV, Indiacast, 9XM, Sahara TV, Times Television Network, and Travel XP HD were some of the broadcasters who attended. Independent film producers Imtiaz Barolia and Javed Rahman Khan also attended. Amongst the distributors included Bhupin Chhadva, Yuvamira Dwivedi, Vivek Lath, Ratnakar Kumar, Sanjay Hinduja and Rashmmi Menon.

Rajjat Barjatya, Sandeep Mehra and Ram Seshan made up the digital players. Education companies Educmedia and Laughing Buddha Entertainment Knowledge were in attendance.

Extremely interactive, the two hour seminar had all the constituents expressing their views. Broadcasters expressed that the two markets are a must attend for TV professionals and that the two markets help generate substantial business for content syndication for them. “Indian TV shows command about $350 to $700 per half hour,” said one of the broadcasters. “The sticker price of non-fiction shows is about $1,500 and above,” said another. “Films sell at anywhere from $500 to $15,-20,000 depending on the territory,” said a third.

According to them, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russian, CIS, Mynamar, Poland, middle east and other east European markets are some of the markets which have taken to Indian content well. Most of the attendees expressed that they would like to see an Indian pavilion come up at MipTV and Mipcom, representing the Indian content creation industry, just like 26 other regions from all over the world are doing, Wanvari said he was in conversation with National Film Development Corporation to set up the pavilion once again this year, while the Animation, VFX, Comic & Gaming Industry of Andhra Pradesh was also in the process of doing the same for this year’s Mipcom from 7-10 October.

Film producer Javed Khan expressed that Mipcom is very conducive to doing co-production deals. He is currently executing a coproduction film with support from Turkey. “We nearly closed one co-production contract at Mipcom three to four years ago,” he said.

Creative professional and producer Rahul Sarangi spoke about a non-fiction format developed by him which is going on the floors in four different countries. “Indian broadcasters were not very accommodating of my paper format,” he says. “So I invested about $40,000 and created a nice trailer and one of the overseas format distributors agreed to license it. It will be seen in several countries very soon. Mipcom and MipTV have really helped me realise my ambitions. Now an Indian broadcaster is negotiating to buy the licence for India.”

The entire room gave a rousing ovation to digital producer Rajjat Barjatya who has generated 1.5 billion views for his 45 odd channels on YouTube. “Indian content can travel and is already travelling through my channels,” he said. “The most popular offering is a video Ba Ba Black sheep which has got 76 odd million views,” he said. “And it is being watched by a German mother and her daughter, an English mother and her son.. it has crossed language and cultural boundaries.”

TV producers stated that they were totally hemmed in by the fact that they did not have the rights to the content they produce, but they would nonetheless like to attend to expand their horizons. Baracos said the Indian case was not unique. He gave the example of UK independent producer organisation Pact. “The UK market was quite similar to India’s as is Japan. The producers lobbied with industry and government to get their rights back again,” said Baracos. “They were successful with a caveat: they would share revenues with broadcasters on sales they achieved. Today, the UK Indies pavilion is generating close to 30 million pounds worth of deals annually. Everyone is happy: the broadcasters, and the producers.”

Barbaro highlighted that it is imperative that India builds a brand for itself at international markets. “Korea has done it over years; China is doing it. India needs to do it,” he said. “Today, their content is traveling all over the world. Yes, the government supports their efforts with funds, but the Indian content community needs to awaken the Indian government about the opportunities available and what other governments are doing to help and propagate their culture – and indirectly generate national economic benefits – through markets such as Mipcom and MipTV.”

  • Film inspired by gang rape victim case in Delhi set for release next month

Film inspired by gang rape victim case in Delhi set for release next month

NEW DELHI: “Tara – The Journey of Love & Passion”, a film inspired by the case of the gang rape victim in Delhi last December, is being released on 12 July after having acclaim at several festivals overseas.

Awnindra Pratap Pandey (Boyfriend of the gang rape victim generally referred to as Nirbhaya) said: “I totally feel for the cause on which this film is based and I am happy that someone has taken the step towards empowerment of Women. I hope this small step would lead to the betterment of the society and provides a message to everyone.”

Speaking a press meet in Delhi, lead actress Rekha Rana said, “I am from Delhi and I was very upset with the Nirbhaya incident. I feel lucky that this film came to me. This is the kind of role I have been looking forward to.”

Producer and Director Kumar Raj said, "I happened to attend one of her (Rekha’s) plays, I had already auditioned more than 300 girls and was in search for leading lady for a very long time.” Impressed with her stage presence, Rekha was called by Kumar for an audition in front of ten people including the writer, out of which nine people voted for her."

This powerful story of self-discovery transcends the original theme of tribal strife to raise a universal question: Can you always choose freedom and self-respect over social acceptance? The journey of the ordinary woman Tara in extraordinary situations reveals the story of love and passion and how she deals with this dilemma.

  • Chinese Film Festival opens in Delhi, Jackie Chan wins hearts

Chinese Film Festival opens in Delhi, Jackie Chan wins hearts

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has expressed the hope that an agreement would be reached soon for co-production of films with China.

He said that cinema is a great medium to strengthen and substantiate relations amongst people of the two countries.

While films of Raj Kapoor and some other veterans have been popular for decades in China, the film 3 Idiots was dubbed in Chinese and proved to be a great hit in that country, he added.

The Minister along with Chinese Minister of State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television Cai Fuchao were jointly inaugurating a six-day Chinese Film Festival at Sirifort Auditorium here. Matinee idol Jackie Chan, whose film Chinese Zodiacopened the festival, was the guest of honour. Chinese Ambassador to India Wei Wei, I&B secretary Uday Kumar Varma, and Indo-China Economic Council president P S Deodhar were also present.

Tewari said the time appeared ripe for intensive sharing of films as a potent medium of exchange. “I believe that considering the popularity of Indian films in China, there would be more exposure for Indian films in China in the future, and vice-versa. I am confident that this interaction with the Chinese counterparts would prove to be fruitful and the two countries look forward to agreement on co production in films, as also cooperation in the fields of radio and television An audio visual agreement would not only promote our shooting locations, but will also boost film related tourism between the two countries and hence pave for a more vibrant people-to-people contact,” he added.

The Minister announced that since 2014 marked sixty years of the enunciation of Panchsheel or the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, the year would be marked as the Year of Exchanges between India and China.

Speaking earlier, the Chinese Information Minister said Chinese movies would offer an opportunity for Indian audiences to be acquainted with Chinese landscape, Arts, Music and culture. He further added that this would also enable citizens of both nations to view Indo-China relationship from a broader perspective. He noted that both countries shared cultural similarities.

The Chinese Minister announced that an Indian film festival would soon be held in China

Speaking at the event, Chan said amid loud cheers that he was touched by his popularity in India. He rendered a Chinese song he had composed around two years earlier, ‘Country my Country, Home my Home’, which he said was in Chinese but would find empathy with everyone. He claimed that over ten million downloads of the song had already been done all over the world.

Earlier addressing a press meet, actor Jackie Chan who is based in Hong Kong stressed the need to screen movies in India and China which talk about the need to strive for peaceful co-existence between the two neighbours.

He said, “We cannot choose our neighbours. In fact, we should love each other; why hate each other? Through films we need to promote peace,” replying to a question on the recent border tension.

Dressed in an immaculate white dress, the bespectacled actor said he did not want to be seen as a martial arts actor but as someone in the league of Hollywood actor Robert De Nero.

The actor, whose martial arts — not withstanding his comic fight sequences — has been compared with the legendary actor Bruce Lee, admitted that he held the late actor in high regard: “When I was young I used to watch him do his action sequences.”

Chan – who came to India a decade ago to make The Myth – said it was a successful venture not only in China but across the globe: “I shot the film for a month here. During this period, I watched a lot of television and was impressed with all the singing and dancing. I loved the music of 3 Idiots and wanted to dance with co-actor Mallika Sherawat for the Indian version of The Myth.”

The actor is open to the idea of doing a Bollywood film which has traditional song and dance routines provided the writer must have the ability to make the people understand Indian culture.

“Ordinary people in China do not understand Indian culture… I am just waiting and hoping that some Indian director understands that I am a pretty good actor and not just a fighter.”

“I like cooperation but the script is very important. We will make one version for India and the other for the rest of the world,” he said.

The festival is being supported by Huawei Telecommunications India which claims to be the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world.

The movies being showcased at the festival include the latest offering, The Grandmastersfrom Wong Kar-Wai, internationally renowned as an auteur for his visually unique, highly stylised, and emotionally resonant cinema. And Back to 1942 by Feng Xiaogang, the Chinese film director, who besides being a highly successful commercial filmmaker, has also made comedic films which have consistently done well on the box office. He has also attempted to break out from that mould by making drama or period drama films recently. This film premiered at the International Rome Film Festival in 2012.

  • Fukrey received well up North, even as YJHD goes strong at the BO

Fukrey received well up North, even as YJHD goes strong at the BO

MUMBAI: The Excel Entertainment production Fukrey had its best opening weekend in Delhi and Punjab as there is a genuine connect with the audience up North, where it collected a third (Rs 2.60 crore in Delhi; Rs 70 lakh in Punjab) of its total weekend collections of Rs 9.5 crore across India.

Ankur Arora Murder Case which is based on true events, featuring Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra, Paoli Dam and Arjun Mathur hasn‘t done much to rave the audiences and this reflects in its poor opening weekend collection of about a crore.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is only the third Sunny Sound Production after Indian (2001) and 23rd March 1931: Shaheed (2002). The Deol clan‘s second outing in the YPD franchise has been below average at the end of its first week. The film has managed to collect Rs 27.55 crore for it opening week; the indications for the second weekend do not seem encouraging.

Ayan Mukherjee‘s second directorial venture Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani starring the Kapoor scion and Deepika Padukone has followed up on its bumper first week with strong second week figures. The film collected Rs 49.3 crore in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 153.3 crore and adding a further Rs 13 core for the third weekend taking its 17 day tally to Rs 166.3 crore. Ranbir Kapoor has certainly established himself as a bankable star with back to back Rs 100 crore plus box office collections with last year‘s Barfi! and YJHDthis year.

Aashiqui 2 starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor has gone on to add Rs 40 lakh for its seventh week to take its seven week tally to Rs 78.3 crore. This film has certainly exceeded everyone‘s expectations and the music has certainly connected well with the youth.

The debut directorial venture of Atul Sabharwal under the YRF banner and Arjun Kapoor starrer Aurangzeb has collected Rs 20 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week tally to Rs 24.25 crore at the box office.

  • Faced with shortage of good films, MIFF 2014 to do away with Indian animation competition

Faced with shortage of good films, MIFF 2014 to do away with Indian animation competition

NEW DELHI: The Films Division, which organises the Mumbai International Film Festival for Short, Documentary and Animation films every second year, has decided to do away with the Animation category under the Indian competition section in view of the poor quality of entries received in previous editions.

It has decided that all Animation films will now be entered into the International competition section of the Festival expected to be held from 3 to 9 February next year at the National Centre for Performing Arts (also known as Tata Centre) in Mumbai.

The Division has already held two meetings in Mumbai and Delhi to seek opinion of filmmakers and others on its proposals for the next edition. It has now sought written views on its proposals for MIFF 2014.

To avoid confusion with regular feature films, it has decided to rename its category of fiction films as ‘Short Fiction Films’ and to restrict the maximum duration to 40 or 50 minutes instead of 70 minutes.

There will be two sections of documentary films in the international competition: one below and the other above forty minutes. There will also be a fiction section of up to forty to fifty minutes in both Indian and international sections. There will be a documentary section in the Indian competition and an animation category in the international competition.

The Festival will also have Information Section, Retrospectives / Special Packages, and a Marketing Section.

There is a proposal to have two cut-off dates (for sending entries for selection in Indian Competition section only) to ease the process of pre-selection of films: 31 July for films completed before 30 May and 15 September for films being completed by 31 August.

Apple ProRes (HQ) is being proposed the default screening format for the festival and also for sending competition entries.

  • Bengali filmmaker makes film based on Delhi gang rape

Bengali filmmaker makes film based on Delhi gang rape

NEW DELHI: While a private television channel had been refused permission to telecast a crime show based on this theme, a Bengali filmmaker inspired by the December protests over the gang rape of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist in New Delhi is hoping his film would help change people‘s mindset.

Milan Bhowmik says the message of his film is that anti-rape laws or street protests alone cannot stop a social menace, and the conscience of people needs to be changed.

Bhowmik‘s film, titled "Nirbhoya" in Bengali, is based on media reports of the incident and his meeting with the victim‘s family, although the film would have fictional characters in West Bengal.

He admitted that it was the Delhi gang rape and the huge protest that rocked the nation which inspired the film but said the protests also provoked him to think if such an agitation alone can stop the crime.

He also said incidents of rape had not shown a decline despite the protests and the change in law.

Bhowmik said the film would have shots of the bus cruising through the streets of New Delhi and passing through several police checkpoints.

While the filmmaker is little known outside West Bengal, the cast includes acting legend Soumitra Chatterjee.

Bhowmik said filming for "Nirbhoya" is scheduled to finish next month and it would open in cinemas within a couple of months.
