TV Today Network discontinues Delhi Aaj Tak

MUMBAI: As the pandemic rages on, channels are struggling to survive. Amidst this, TV Today Network announced that the transmission of its Hindi news channel Delhi Aaj Tak will be discontinued from the midnight of 30 June 2020.

It is likely that the network is unable to sustain the channel with the fall in ad revenue. However, it did not provide any reason for the closure of its channel in its letter to distributors signed by senior VP distribution KR Arora. It is likely that the shrinking of the ad pie due to the pandemic is prompting companies to take such harsh decisons.

Delhi Aaj Tak, also known as 'Dilli Aaj Tak,' was launched 12 years ago on 31 December 2007. TV Today Network also has three other channels Aaj Tak (Hindi), India Today Television (English), Aaj Tak Tez (Hindi).

Delhi Aaj Tak sets 29 May as launch date

MUMBAI: Finally the launch date of the proposed national capital region (NCR) channel from the Aroon Purie-promoted TV Today Network has been firmed up (at least targeted). The company has zeroed in on 29 May as the date for the channel’s debut.

This has been confirmed to indiantelevision.com by senior sources from within the company.

Targeting Delhi as well as the neighbouring satellite towns of Faridabad and Gurgaon in Haryana and Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, the fourth sibling from the stable will encompass various local issues of the regions aimed at attracting Hindi speaking audiences.

While the sources refused to divulge any details on the programming front, offering only that while the channel would be a different product from market leader Aaj Tak, nonetheless it would maintain the essence of its established sibling.

As reported earlier, the uplinking clearance for Delhi Aaj Tak came through last year. The channel’s tag line is ‘Delhi Aaj Tak’: aapka sehar, aap tak (Delhi Aaj Tak: your city, up close), it will be beamed off Insat 2E.

The other news channels from the TV Today stable are however, likely to shift their beaming base from Insat-2E to Pas-10.

Last year, the network has launched its second Hindi news channel Tez tracing the format of English sibling Headlines Today (pacy news format). The channel focuses on quick delivery of news.

What needs to be seen is whether the company will also consider in its offering, other metro-centric products?

The NCR region already has a few existing players including Sahara NCR, S1 and Total TV servicing the viewers’ news appetite. Meanwhile, NDTV is also proposing a new product to service the metros, including Delhi.

TV Today’s Delhi Aaj Tak likely to launch mid-May

MUMBAI: Amidst all the debate around uplink and downlink the Aroon Purie-promoted TV Today Network Ltd is set to launch yet another channel in an already cluttered news space. Launching some time in the middle of this month under the name Delhi Aaj Tak is a 24-hour news channel servicing the news needs of the national capital region (NCR) of Delhi.
Barring any technical glitches, the fourth channel from TV Today stable is expected to begin beaming by mid-May.

The channel will be headed by one of the old guard of the network Amitabh, who has been with the company for a decade, while the special project head for the channel is Alok Verma. Earlier, Verma was associated with Zee News as its editorial head and had done a stint with Star TV Interactive division in Bangalore, apart from having worked with other media companies at the national and regional levels.

But a senior executive of TV Today remained tightlipped about the progress of the channel and the launch date, stating that the channel launch will happen in May.

The channel, which received its uplink clearance in the last quarter of 2005, has been positioned on the plank of Delhi Aaj Tak: aapka sehar, aap tak (Delhi Aaj Tak: your city, up close). The team which will oversee the news channel is already in place, with a fresh pool of talent as well.

On the technical side, all the news channels from the TV Today stable (including the newest baby) are likely to shift their beaming base from Insat-2E to Pas-10.

Delhi Aaj Tak will have to battle for viewership with a host of news channels already catering to the NCR region. The players presently operating in this segment include Sahara NCR, S1 and Total TV. NDTV is also planning a new product to service the metros, including Delhi.

TV Today Network to launch NCR centric news channel –Delhi Aaj Tak

MUMBAI: Lack of adequate bandwidth with cable networks be damned. And, notwithstanding the lingering uncertainty over CAS despite a favourable court ruling, TV companies are gung-ho over introduction of new products.

The Aroon Purie-promoted TV Today Network Ltd is poised to launch a 24-hour news channel catering to the national capital region (NCR) of Delhi, which will be the fourth from its stable.

According to cable industry sources, the boxes have to be seeded before a formal launch. The new product is likely to be called Delhi Aaj Tak, trying to cash in on the brand equity of elder sibling and Hindi news market leader Aaj Tak.
The tag line for the new channel would be Delhi Aaj Tak: aapka sehar, aap tak (Delhi Aaj Tak: your city, up close). Sources said that the proposed Delhi-centric Hindi language news channel is looking at going on air in the second quarter of calendar year 2006 (April-June).

According to information available with Indiantelevision.com, the team which will oversee the news channel is already in place. The proposed channel will beam via Insat 2E. The existing news channels from the TV Today stable like Aaj Tak, Headlines Today and Tez beam off the same satellite.

The Delhi-NCR region already has a host of news channels with which Delhi Aaj Tak has to compete. Existing players in this segment include the Sahara NCR, S1 and Total TV. NDTV is also planning a new product to service the metros cities, including Delhi.

However, ahead of the launch of the new product, TV Today has once again become a poaching ground for competitors. Recently, Aaj Tak’s senior anchor and deputy-executive producer Ashutosh had put in his papers to join as the managing editor of Channel7 (to be renamed IBN7), which is part of the TV18 network. It is being said that some other senior TV Today staffers are also likely to quit with new products luring them.

The TV Today scrip, which opened today at Rs 88.60 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) had touched a high of Rs 92.85.
