Sony MAX competes with the GEC genre for advertisers: Vaishali Sharma

MUMBAI: Indians are obsessed with their stars and connect on an emotional level to the stories playing out on screens. Catering to this population of cine-lovers is Sony MAX that has been feeding this madness for the last 20 years through its vast content library, offering the best Hindi movies. And now to mark the successful completion of these two decades, it has kick-started months of interesting campaigns with its ‘Yeh Hai Desh Ki Deewangi’ TVC.

The campaign is an extension of its ‘Deewana Bana De’ positioning and features ‘Gullu Gulati’ as a mirror image of every movie lover in the country. Speaking about the celebratory campaign with Indiantelevision.com, Sony SAB, PAL and Sony MAX movie cluster head, marketing, and communications Vaishali Sharma shared that it is a celebration of the channel’s relation with its viewers.

She said, “It is pretty tough to create a campaign for the brand that is already very successful and also has a strong positioning, which it doesn’t want to change. So, we decided to let the campaign be a celebration of our success and the leadership position that we have been maintaining for the past 148 weeks. Also, it is a celebration of our relationship with our viewers and the passion for movies.”

The campaign, which showcases the protagonist recreating iconic characters like Raj from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Vijay from Don, Munna Bhai from Munna Bhai MBBS and Baahubali from Baahubali has been created by DDB Mudra group. Praising the agency for its cooperation and support, Sharma said that the agency not only knows the channel well but also loves what it does.

Apart from the campaign, the channel will be running a number of online activities to mark the celebration. The campaign will be played on digital and on cross channel platforms along with theatres. The channel will also be doing some interactive activities with its followers online like the #Deewangi challenge and ‘your best deewana fan moment’, revealed Sharma.

Elaborating on how the channel will continue to maintain its strong position in the market as it steps into the 21st year, Sharma said that it is very difficult to share what is going to happen in the next year as the industry is very dynamic.

“Every day the industry is seeing some changes. Especially with the NTO, there has been a great transformation and one needs to adapt to it. Right now, the focus remains on bringing a premium experience to users both on and off-air,” Sharma noted.

She added that the channel has grown tremendously well in the past few years and is planning to continue on the same path. “We are not just a movie channel but we compete with the GEC space. We offer the advertisers the same reach as other channels. I think we are a fantastic reach platform (for the brands).”

On being asked how she is planning to maintain the growth in the NTO world, Sharma said that it is practical to move on with the new tariff order. “I think it is an opportunity for us to really market ourselves strongly to the consumers and I think we should continue doing that and create a strong demand (for our content),” she concluded.

Sony MAX kicks off celebrations for landmark 20 years of entertaining movie lovers

MUMBAI: Sony MAX, India’s leading premiere Hindi movie channel from Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN), has created a benchmark by becoming the only channel across genres, to sustain a long-standing leadership stint for 148 weeks in a row. To mark this milestone and kick-start the celebration of 20 glorious years of entertaining movie lovers in India, Sony MAX has rolled out its latest TV campaign highlighting its brand essence ‘Deewana Bana De’.

The campaign – Yeh Hai Desh Ki Deewangi celebrates the spirit of millions of cinema fans whose passion and enthusiasm for movies make them special and larger than life. The TVC, which first aired at 20:20 on 20 July 2019, marks the launch of an elaborate marketing blitzkrieg across multiple touchpoints as a run-up to the special day in October 2019.

The latest TVC, the first of many initiatives in a three-month integrated campaign, “Yeh Desh ki Deewangi” relives classic golden moments from some of the most memorable movies of the past two decades. India has grown up on a staple feed of filmy masala, culture curry and cinematic servings dished up by Sony MAX. Gullu Gulati, the central character of the campaign, is the personification of the deewanapan of Sony MAX. The film follows Gullu Gulati, charting a 20-year journey of ‘Deewangi’ as he lives his life unabashedly imitating iconic scenes from movies and his favorite stars like Raj Aryan from Mohabattein, Raj from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Bahhubali and Sultan.

The TVCs are conceptualised by DDB Mudra Group and shot by Footloose Films. To promote the campaign, the channel is engaging in a massive television plan across news, kids and regional channels for three weeks. The marketing plan also consists of a huge digital leg.

Sony SAB, PAL and Sony MAX movie cluster business head Neeraj Vyas said, “I am thrilled that Sony MAX which has been the undisputed leader, week on week for nearly three years, setting unparalleled standards in the industry, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. For two decades, our robust library of films, path-breaking concepts, trend-setting programming has made the channel a strong favorite. He represents the heart of every Indian. With this milestone, we only promise to get better and bigger from here on while entertaining our audiences to their heart’s content.”

DDB Mudra Group national creative director Rahul Mathew said, “Indians and Hindi cinema are inseparable and when it comes to movies, it’s Sony MAX. The clear brief given to us was to conceptualise a campaign for the channel which has been the epitome of Bollywood movies for past 2 decades now. To capture the essence of this stature we had to recreate the ‘Deewangi’ that represents the emotions of the entire nation. Hence, Gullu was born whose ‘Deewangi’ for movies and Sony MAX resonates with every movie lover in India.”

  • Sony Max gets ‘filmy’ yet again!

Sony Max gets ‘filmy’ yet again!

MUMBAI: It’s no surprise that Indians have always been crazy or ‘deewana’ about two things – Bollywood and cricket. It is the only country, where in the most unexpected of moments one can find people using a dialogue from a movie or breaking into a song. And it’s this ‘Bollywood Fever’ which makes it important for Hindi movie channel Sony Max to bring out the ‘deewanapan’ (craziness) in a new, surprising manner every time.

It was in 2012, when the channel felt the need to get viewers close to the world of movies and live the life filmy style, and thus launching a campaign titled, ‘Shuruaat Yahin Se’ which celebrated 100 years of cinema. It talked about how watching a good film is a way to handle extreme emotions.

But the phrase failed to click with the audiences, and so in 2013, the channel’s tagline ‘Deewana Bana De’ had to come back in a new avatar. Max launched three television commercials as part of its brand campaign – ‘Jahan Dekho, Vahaan Deewana’ which added a new dimension to its existing positioning, ‘Deewana Bana De’.

This year, to further strengthen its emotional connect with the consumers, the channel has launched three commercials as part of its brand campaign – ‘Ab Khulkar phailegi Deewangi’. The three 40-seconders, carve out the very basic element within the common man. It doesn’t talk about brand Max, but about the deewanapan in everyone.

The first of the three TVCs that went on-air on 15 December shows how an extremely slow tuk-tuk driver gets charged-up by listening to the ‘Dhoom’ song tune and starts cruising through the road in full speed.

The second TVC shows bridesmaids along with an old aunt making a war cry for the bride ‘Chak De’ to perk her up from the anxiety of her suhagraat. The third TVC depicts how a furniture showroom salesman bitten by the Bollywood bug replicates the iconic Zanjeer movie scene while attending a customer.

This year the channel has particularly borrowed dialogues and songs from key films like Zanjeer (1973), Dhoom and Chak De India. The films have a very subtle humorous appeal and the brand films are directed by ace ad film maker Anaam Mishra from Crome Pictures.

Sony Max VP – marketing Vaishali Sharma believes that this will make the campaign more powerful. “It will help us integrate the brand seamlessly into the consumers’ life,” she says.

According to Sony Max senior VP and business head Neeraj Vyas, Hindi films have their own kind of crafting and now the germ is all over. “In the last 50 years of cinema, the characters and songs have become larger than life. There is filmy madness in everybody and now the madness is spreading. Till last year, we said ‘Deewana Bana De’ and showered some elements and this year we are saying that look, now the craziness is spreading.”

Conceptualised by DDB Mudra, it took two months for the channel from planning to the execution of all the three commercials. Vyas found the scripts very cute and in the Max zone. When asked why the channel picked these three movies, he says, “It could have been anything else as well. But when you sit for a campaign for over two months you go through a lot of ideas and scripts. We thought that these were quite relevant and without being over-the-top funny.”

According to Sharma every year the channel continues to strengthen its emotional connect with the consumers so that it can, within the space of Hindi movie genre, continue to occupy strong position and affinity in the hearts and minds of consumers.

For Sharma , ‘Deewana Bana De’ as a positioning line, has lived for a long time but the channel’s attempt in the last one-two years has been to make it more relevant to people’s life.  “The impact that Bollywood films have on our lives is ingrained into our DNA. Also from the brand perspective, strengthening the fact that people from all strata’s continue to watch Max and owning the space of how movies impact our daily lives.”

DDB Mudra Group chairman and CCO Sonal Dabral feels that the new campaign is all about infecting people with passion and love for this great Indian cinema and to encourage people to see the lighter side in every walk of life. He adds, “India is a country passionate and obsessed with ‘Bollywood’ and what better way to capture this unique obsession than by coming out with a campaign which pays homage to Indian cinema.”

Sharma shares the learning that the channel has acquired over the years. One, to understand what role movies plays in people’s lives and two, how it is a big source of entertainment.  “Over the years how we have evolved as a brand is how we make ‘Deewana Bana De’ or Max as a brand more relatable. We have wide range of audience’s right from people in metros to LC1 and rural markets, but to find a brand essence and a campaign that cuts across audiences is a tricky task for us.”

So to make the job easy, year-on-year the channel keeps in touch with the consumers by doing qualitative and quantitative research to find out how they are interacting with the brand and how movies on television forms a big chunk of their daily lives. “Especially when you keep going down to smaller and smaller towns, the whole aspect of ‘I wait to watch movies on television to brighten up my life’ is what consumers share the relation with the brand. So the brand affinity scores are very high for Max.”

According to Vyas, the channel does hygiene research every year to keep understanding what the consumers want and to keep a tab on social relevant changes that keeps on happening across which also helps the channel in the kind of movies it picks.

To give an extra dose of entertainment, apart from the brand campaigns, fillers like Bittu Bak Bak, Fully Deewana, etc also keep running throughout the day.

On the marketing front, it’s a primarily television led campaign. Apart from both the movie properties – Max and Max 2, the commercials will also be available across the Sony network. Moreover, Max has bought space on 32 channels for over three weeks from other networks to promote the new campaigns. These include English news, regional channels, kids and music channels to a large extent. The 360 degree marketing plan also includes a digital campaign and cinema across key markets spread over the next one month.

Sony MAX gives its viewers a reason to laugh

MUMBAI: Ever thought of watching a Bollywood style comic filler or a short movie spoof between movie breaks instead of a regular soap or a toothpaste advertisement?  India’s premier Hindi Movies channel, Sony MAX makes your wishes come true.  With its tagline of ‘Deewana Bana De’, the channel takes an initiative to provide its viewers with entertainment beyond movies. On his association with the channel comedian Krushna Abhishek, says, “I have a long standing relationship with Sony and genuinely speaking, I feel it is my extended family. Talking about entertaining people in between movie screenings on the channel is comedian Bharati Singh, who says, “I have heard people complaining about ads on TV, especially during movies. But now, the audience will get to see comedy snippets in which Krushna Abhishek, Paresh Ganatra and I will ensure that they don’t have a reason to surf channels even during a commercial break.”

Emphasizing the importance of making the movie watching experience more entertaining is Vice-President  & Head, Programming- Sony Max, Udayan Pradeep Shukla, who says, “For a library channel like us, it becomes a little difficult. On a general entertainment channel, the audience is conditioned to come back, but on a movie channel that’s not the case. So it was thus imperative for us to think of an idea that was unique and holds the viewers’ attention. The films are outright funny and will give the audience an opportunity to laugh in between the films.”
