Ra.One named Worst film, Imran Khan & Deepika Padukone get worst actor awards

NEW DELHI: ‘Ra. One’, one of the most expensive films in Bollywood, has been voted the worst film of 2011 and its director Anubhav Sinha has been named worst director.

In an event held on All Fools Day, Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone received the notorious worst actor awards for ‘Mere Brother ki Dulhan’ and ‘Aarakshan’ respectively in the fourth annual Golden Kela awards which marked the culmination of the first-ever Comedy Festival held in the capital.

Jatin Verma, head of Twenty Onwards Media which organises the annual event on the lines of the Golden Raspberry Awards given in Hollywood every year, said a total of around 700,000 votes were received for the awards. The programme was presented by Anant Singh.

Pratiek Babbar – son of Raj Babbar and the late Smita Patil – was named worst supporting actor for ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ and ‘Aarakshan’, while Chirag Paswan was named the worst debutante for ‘Miley Na Miley Hum’.

The veteran Pankaj Kapoor won the ‘Bawra Ho Gaya Kay’ award for the film ‘Mausam’, while the film ‘Pyar ka Panchnama’ was named for the Shakti kapoor award for misogyny (which literally means “man’s hatred for women”).

One of the most interesting awards was for the music director Preetam, who won the ‘Bas kijiye bahaut ho gaya’ award for freely copying tunes from different countries for his songs. Around 20 songs composed by him were played along with the originals, which showed he had taken tunes from music as far away as the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America, and even based on songs tuned some years earlier by Anu Malik. In fact, the songs played included one copied by Preetam on one of his own tunes that came a few years earlier.

The lyrics named as the Most Irritating Song was ‘Teri Meri’ from the Salman Khan-Kareen Kapoor starrer ‘Bodyguard’.

Ironically. Amitabh Bhattacharyya who won the National Award for best lyrics for penning the song ‘Agar zindagi’ in the film ‘I Am…’ was named for the Most Atrocious Lyrics – ‘Pyar Do Pyar Lo’ (‘Thank You’), ‘Jigar ka Tukda’ (‘Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’), and the Mutton Song (‘Luv ka the End’).

The ‘Aaja Nach Le Award’ for Worst Attempt at Comeback was given to Esha Deol for ‘Tell me O Kkhuda’, while the Lajja Award for the Worst treatment of a serious issue was given to Prakash Jha’s ‘Aarakshan’. The F.A.L.T.U award for most aptly named film went to ‘F.A.L.T.U’.

Interestingly, filmmaker Kanti Shah was present personally to receive a Platinum Kela special award excellence in cinema. He has been making B-Grade movies over the past two decades, but the organizers said he had always given the audiences what they wanted. “I‘m feeling good at being invited at the event. It’s special because it has been organised by true fans of my style of movie-making. I have been to other award shows as well, but this definitely is special being solely driven by fans of my movies,” said Shah.

Best known for the cult film ‘Gunda’ in 1998 (Starring Mithun Da!) and such classics as Loha, Duplicate Sholay, Shaadi Basanti ki Honeymoon Gabbar ka, and Sheela Ki Jawani, Kanti Shah is perhaps the only director worthy of the title ‘So Bad It’s Good’.

Also present was Arunoday Singh, who accepted the Anti-Kela award on behalf of the team of Yeh Saali Zindagi. The Trophy was presented to him by last year’s winner, Abhishek Sharma (Director, Tere Bin Laden). “I think Sudhir Mishra should be the one accepting this. I‘m quite honoured and amused to accept this award. It is good to see this movie getting some recognition. And you guys obviously have a great choice,” Singh said.

Other recipients of the Anti-Kela award were ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’,’ Shaitan’ and ‘Shor in the City’, who managed to please the Kela Committee.

The Golden Kela awards came at the end of the Comedy Festival during which iconic comedy films like ‘Jaane bhi do yaaro’, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ and ‘Tere Bin Laden’ were screened.

There was a competition on Standup Comedy as part of the Indian Comedy Festival for the ‘Comedy Central’ TV channel and Maheep Singh and Zakir Khan shared the top prize of Rs 1,00,000 along with the chance to be featured on Comedy Central.

Deepika Padukone, Taurani patch up for Race 2

MUMBAI: After two days of negotiations, Deepika Padukone has finally decided to jump back on board for Ramesh Taurani‘s ‘Race 2‘, though she has set some conditions.

It is being said that after meeting Taurani yesterday, Padukone realised that it wouldn‘t be in her best interest to contest the filmmaker on monetary grounds.

Though the official CINTAA (Cine and TV Artistes‘ Association) meeting was called off 30 minutes before its scheduled time on Wednesday, the actress did end up meeting CINTAA general secretary Dharmesh Tiwari who asked her to stay away from monetary hassles and say ‘yes‘ to Taurani.

The conditions that Padukone has set are that she will not allot fresh dates to ‘Race 2‘, as she will be busy with Rajinikanth‘s ‘Kochadaiyaan‘ and the Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Jawaani Diwani‘. She has asked both Taurani and director Abbas-Mustan to not work with middlemen; she will only work with her chosen set of designers, hair stylist and makeup artist; she wants the makers to consult her for the release of their film because she wants no misunderstandings during the promotional phase of the film; and in case of a foreign schedule, the actress wants to be informed a month in advance.

Ramesh Taurani complains against Deepika Padukone to CINTAA

MUMBAI: Angry with Deepika Padukone’s quitting Tips Films‘ Race 2 at the eleventh hour, producer Ramesh Taurani has filed a complaint against the actress with the Cine & TV Artists Association (CINTAA) and Association of Motion Pictures & TV Programme Producer of India (AMPTPP).

CINTAA has confirmed having received the complaint against Padukone and in turn has informed the actress about the complaint filed by the filmmaker.

According to the rules and regulations of CINTAA, if an artiste fails to respond to a complaint, the case gets forwarded to FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees). And then, if the artiste turns a blind eye to FWICE‘s decision, he/she is liable to face a NCD (Non-Cooperation Directive).

“ I respect Taurani a lot and would not do anything that upsets him. The only paper he had given ma mentioned that the film would be completed by September 2011 and we are in now February 2012. I have my own commitments. I would reply to the CINTAA in due course of time,” averred Padukone.

It is believed that Padukone will soon meet FWICE President Dharmesh Tiwari and CINTAA General Secretary Dharmesh Tiwari. After the two parties are heard, Padukone doesn’t mind returning the signing amount and as for the compensation, she is open to discussions.

  • Desi Boyz is a feel good romcom

Desi Boyz is a feel good romcom

MUMBAI: Desi Boyz is the directorial debut film of a chip of the old block, Rohit Dhawan, son of David Dhawan, who regaled the audience with many an entertainer .

Producer: Krishika Lulla,Vijay Ahuja, Jyoti Deshpande.
    Director: Rohit Dhawan.
Cast: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Chitrangda Singh, Omi Vaidya, Sanjay Dutt (cameo), Anupam Kher, Mohnish Bahl.

Wisely, Rohit Dhawan chooses a romantic comedy as his launch vehicle and proceeds to add all that such a film would need, including a dash of emotions – just enough to moisten your eyes but not so much as to flood them.

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham share a friendship going back 15 years; while John finishes his graduation in economics, landing a cushy job as an investment banker, and has Deepika Padukone as his fiancée, Akshay has done nothing worthwhile since he arrived in London except for changing his name from Jignesh Patel to Jerry. He is a college dropout, has no fixed job and mostly survives by scrounging off John Abraham. To add to that, he is the guardian of his seven-year-old nephew, who has been orphaned.

All is hunky dory until the recession takes its toll and establishments sack staff left, right and centre. The signboards read: ‘we fire, don‘t hire‘. As Akshay Kumar loses his job as a security guard at a mall, John Abraham too loses his banking job. Their search for work is futile. John is overqualified and unaffordable while Akshay has no qualifications worthy of a job. Akshay Kumar stands to lose custody of his nephew and they are soon to lose their apartment as well. There is just one option available to them, join Sanjay Dutt‘s escort service, Desi Boyz, with the job profile being to gratify bored rich women. Reluctantly, both turn gigolos and money is no problem anymore; the bubble bursts when Deepika finds out what her fiancé is up to and walks out on him. For his part, Akshay loses custody of his nephew.

With this debut, Rohit Dhawan sure shows a lot of promise as a writer as well as director; his handling of the film is mature and shows his flair for feel-good cinema. However, choosing a younger star cast-oriented film would have given him a better start.

Music is on the good side with Subah hone nade…..giving a touch of melody while the title song and other numbers are foot tapping. Photography is good. Choreography is away from the routine and offers no loo breaks. Dialogues are appropriately witty.

Akshay Kumar looks a little fresher than his recent films but is his usual self in the acting department. John Abraham is restrained and good. Deepika Padukone is so-so. Chitrangda Singh, in a brief role, does the needful – look sexy as well as perform ably. Anupam Kher, Mohnish Behl and Omi Vaidya provide good support. Sanjay Dutt fits his character.

With the lead stars of Desi Boyz being out of favour with the audience, Desi Boyz has lost out on the required and expected opening draw; since it has appeal for both, multiplexes as well as single screens, its collections should improve over the weekend but not enough to justify its price tag.

  • SC lifts Aarakshan ban in UP

SC lifts Aarakshan ban in UP

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today declared illegal the ban imposed by Mayawati government on the release of producer-director Prakash Jha‘s film, Aarakshan.

The apex court, thus, cleared the decks for the release of the film in Uttar Pradesh.

Jha had challenged the ban imposed on the release of the film by Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab government.

The Punjab and Andhra Pradesh governments, however, lifted the ban after the director agreed to remove the objectionable portions. But the Mayawati government refused to lift the ban on the ground that it may create law and order problems.

A bench comprising Justices MK Sharma and Anil R Dave quashed the UP government order banning the release of the movie for two months.

The movie has already been released in other parts of the country on 12 August.

Jha in his petition had contended that the ban order violated his fundamental right to Freedom of Speech and Expression guaranteed under Article 19(i)(a) of the Constitution of India.

Earlier, the Mumbai and Patna High Courts refused to interfere with the release of the film, the latter observing that there had been no law and order problem since its release.

The Madras High Court had stayed the release of the film but changed its order after Jha convinced the court that the issue related to some extraneous payment not linked to this film.

Earlier this week when the apex court issued notice to the UP Government on the petition, the bench also asked the Centre to give its reaction in view of the contentions by Jha that the state governments cannot override the permission granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to exhibit a movie.

The petition contended the decision by the governments of UP, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh was due to political reasons and it violates the fundamental right to speech and expression.

In the petition, Jha said the examining committee of Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC), which cleared the film for exhibition, comprised members drawn from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and other backward castes and the ban by the three states is “biased and arbitrary”.

Seeking a stay on ban orders, Jha had cited various apex court judgments holding that “open criticism of the government policies and operations is not a ground for imposing restriction on expression views even in the form of films.”

He said he has spent Rs 650 million towards production, publicity and marketing of the film and third party rights for distribution and exploitation of the film have also been created.

Aarakshan, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Prateik Babbar and Hema Malini (in a guest role), deals with the sensitive issue of commercialisation of education in the light of caste-based reservations in the education system.

  • Madras HC stays Aarakshan release

    Madras HC stays Aarakshan release

NEW MUMBAI: Even as the Madras High Court today directed an interim stay of Prakash Jha‘s Aarakshan for non-payment of dues, the film is to be screened before the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Commission Chairman P L Punia said this here today after meeting Central Board of Film Certification Chairperson Leela Samson.

In Chennai, the stay by Justice Periyakaruppiah was granted after a civil suit was filed by Madhu Gupta and CG Photo Ltd for recovery of Rs 37.5 million in unpaid dues.

The petitioners had accused the filmmaker of not paying their dues and sought a stay on the release of the movie slated to be released on 12 August. The producer has not paid the money despite promise and the cheques given by him were reportedly dishonoured.

The film stars megastar Amitabh Bachchan with Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik Babbar.

In Delhi, Punia said the film would be screened for the Commission, based on the outcome of the case in the Bombay High Court tomorrow. The commission wants to examine whether the film violates the provisions of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Samson said that the Board was discussing all the issues with the Commission, but refused to divulge more since the matter was sub judice.

“The Commission has every right to be concerned about a matter of importance in the country. It has never said it wanted to interfere,” Samson said, adding, “We do not have any issue in discussing issues with it.”

Samson added, “The director Jha is right in saying that he won‘t be able to screen the movie for all. He‘s shown it to the right people, that is the CBFC.”
The CBFC passed the film without cuts with a U/A certificate as it felt the film was thought provoking. The certificate was awarded after an examining committee, set up with representatives from the Dalit, OBC, SC and ST community, reviewed the movie.

Pro-reservationists are up in arms against the film, saying it is anti-Dalit. However, Jha has repeatedly said at press meets that the film is only dealing with the commercialisation of education by institutions taking advantage of reservation. He has not spoken against reservation, which he and Bachchan said is a fact of life since the Supreme Court had upheld it.
