    BBC Worldwide’s ‘Deep Blue’ documentary grosses $25 million

    MUMBAI: Deep Blue, the documentary feature film produced by BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media has grossed over $ 25 million at the box office since its release this summer.

    Deep Blue developed from a popular series The Blue Planet a co-production by BBC/Discovery Channel broke record in Japan’s single theatre, overtaking the record set three months earlier by the Academy Award winning film Lost In Translation and has taken 1 billion Yen and knocking Spiderman 2, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban.
     

    Deep Blue collected around $5.8 million in its first 12 weeks of release in France and collected appromximately $5.3 million in 13 weeks, becoming Germany’s best selling documentary feature film, informs an offical release.

    The producer of Deep Blue Alix Tidmarsh said: “Audiences around the world have reacted incredibly well to the movie. Its box office success to date demonstrates that we have hit exactly the right note with Deep Blue. It’s a powerful and emotional event that contains wonderful entertainment for a family audience.”
     

    Greenlight Media VP and producer of Deep Blue Sophokles Tasioulis adds, “The response to the movie from around the globe by audiences and critics has been phenomenal. The box office success of Deep Blue reflects the growing importance of theatrical documentary features.”
     

    Deep Blue, explores life above, below and far beneath the ocean’s surface. It was inspired by the international series, The Blue Planet.
     

    The documetary film features a score from composer George Fenton, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (its first-ever recording of a movie score), and is narrated by actor Michael Gambon.

    The film was made in more than 200 locations around the world with camera crews descending as far as 5,000 metres in the most powerful submersible craft available, Deep Blue was directed by Alastair Fothergill and Andy Byatt.

    BBC Worldwide ups Alix Tidmarsh as marketing director

    MUMBAI: BBC Worldwide has announced the appointment of Alix Tidmarsh as marketing director. Alix has been heading the company’s intellectual property management (IPM) unit responsible for the marketing of factual programmes.
    The IPM unit will now be merged with the marketing services department under Farhana Gani to create an integrated, full service marketing operation for BBC Worldwide. Farhana will report to Alix with the new title of Head of Creative Services, informs a company release.
    Reporting to Mike, Alix and her team will act as the company’s central marketing hub, facilitating company-wide marketing projects, and expanding to include all non-children’s TV and consumer-publishing related projects and will help shape the company’s investment strategy.
    The team will continue to account manage the BBC specialist factual departments, working with producers and BBC marketing and communications to develop programming with a global multi-media potential and coordinating and managing the global exploitation of those brands across media. The team will continue to develop and manage special projects such as the feature film, Deep Blue and the forthcoming Planet Earth movie, bringing the BBC brand to new audiences, adds the release.
    “The role brings, for the first time, our strategic market planning and the creative execution of campaigns together under a single management, with a clear remit that will be more easily understood by our partners in the BBC and in the wider production community,” said BBC Worldwide managing director international television Mike Phillips.
    “Alix’s experience and skills are perfect to further develop our marketing strategy and bringing the strategy team together with our highly regarded Creative Services team will enhance our world class capability,” he said.
    Alix joined BBC Worldwide in 1998 as Brand Manager for the BBC natural history unit. In her role as director of IPM – factual, she developed the role of marketing factual landmark series on a global basis.

    BBC Worldwide’s theatrical distribution deals for ‘Deep Blue’ documentary

    MUMBAI: BBC Worldwide has announced that it is is making the global movie industry dive into Deep Blue with its new theatrical distribution deals

    BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media have signed a deal with Optimum Releasing for it to acquire distribution rights in the UK, Ireland, Malta and Gibraltar for the feature-length ocean documentary Deep Blue. Optimum Releasing will release the film in a few months time in around 30 cinemas.

    Other deals were signed last week at the Berlin Film Festival. Hopscotch will distribute Deep Blue in Australia and New Zealand; Cineart will do the same in Belgium; A-Films has taken Deep Blue for the Netherlands; Odeon is releasing it in Greece; and Shani Films is the distributor in Israel.

    Deep Blue recently released in Germany. The box office figures were up eight per cent week on week with admissions standing at 225,000. When the movie opened in Germany it beat the Hollywood competition such as the Oscar nominated Lost In Translation and Finding Nemo.

    Deep Blue is the first of several co-productions planned between BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media pursuant to a multi-picture deal. It explores life above, below and far beneath the ocean’s surface. Its source of inspiration was the television series Blue Planet which was co-produced by the BBC and Discovery. The film is narrated by actor Michael Gambon Path to War.
