    DD shares BRICS football telecast with Star

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan, which has the exclusive rights to cover the first BRICS Under 17 Football Cup tournament now being held in India, is sharing its signals with Star Sports to telecast the India Brazil match positional match apart from the final match.

    A DD official told indiantelevision.com that the signal was being shared without any monetary arrangement. Furthermore, Star Sports was not doing any marketing, which was being handled by Doordarshan itself.

    The BRICS Under 17 Football Cup, which has been given great importance with the official government website pib.nic.in giving daily results and DD Sports covering it live, is being shown on DD North East with commentary in English and Hindi and on DD Malayalam with commentary in that language.

    Brazil is so far the only unbeaten team and may go on to win the BRICS U 17 Football Cup, being held in Goa at the initiative of the prime minister Narendra Modi.

    DD Sports hopes through expers to analyse the takeaways for India which has had three consecutive defeats, particularly as the tournament will again be hosted by India next year.

    The repeat telecast of the matches can be seen next day on DD Sports. The final match of the tournament and closing ceremony scheduled on 15 October can be watched on DD National, which claims to be the largest terrestrial platform of the world.

    DD has deployed a 60-member team comprising production and engineering staff for the smooth coverage of the tournament. 

    Favourites Brazil is the only unbeaten team thus far with nine points from three outings. Russia is placed second with six points from three fixtures, while both South Africa and China have four points each. India has suffered identical solitary goal losses to Russia, South Africa and China.

    DD to telecast ‘Swachh’ tourism programmes

    NEW DELHI: Nine kendras of Doordarshan have been allocated a sum of Rs 8,80,000 for making an eight-episode programme on ‘Swachhmeva Jayate’ to promote the concept of sanitation and water conservation.

    While Delhi Kendra received a sum of Rs 4,80,000, the other channels – Mumbai, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Varanasi, Madurai, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar and Jammu/Srinagar – get Rs 50,000 each.

    This is part of the total of Rs 38.5 million allocated by the Drinking Water and Sanitation for the programmes which have commenced telecast from 1 October on DD National.

    Each of the kendras other than Delhi have been given specific areas for shooting for an episode on Swachh Darshan (Tourism segment).

    These are Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal for Mumbai, Golden temple for DDK Jalandhar, Ajmer Sharif for Jaipur, Manikarnika Ghat for Varanasi, Meenakshi Temple for Madurai, Kamkhaya Temple for Guwahati, Jagannath Puri for Bhubaneswar, and Vaishno Devi for Jammu/Srinagar.

    DD notifies tenders for FreeDish MPEG4 STBs

    NEW DELHI: Tenders submitted for set top boxes suitable for MPEG4 upgradation of the country’s only free-to-air direct-to-home platform DD FreeDish will be opened on 25 October 2016.

    In an announcement, the Indian pubcaster Doordarshan said that original equipment manufacturers filing tenders for this purpose would have to be DD authorized OEMs to sell DD approved Indian conditional access system (iCAS) and firmware/middleware-enabled boxes. 

    Those applying would have to buy the form for Rs 10,000 and then give earnest money for Rs 1 million and deliver the STBs within a period of three months.

    A DD official, who did not want to be named, said it was clear that DD will not be paying any money to those who are found suitable but will only approve their bids in accordance with the parameters set for suitability of the STBs. The earnest money was only aimed at getting genuine manufacturers, he added.

    India is expected to have 173 million paid cable and satellite home in India by the beginning of next year and the official added that the exact number of FreeDish subscribers would be known when the Indian Conditional Access System (iCAS) system becomes fully operational. Since any individual can buy a FreeDish antenna and set it atop his house, it is difficult to indicate the number of subscribers.

    A pre-bid conference would be held on 3 October 2016.

    The application form, including technical and financial details, can be downloaded from website www.tenderwizard.com/PB. E-application notice is also available on Doordarshan website www.ddindia.gov.in using the link tender notice (engineering) or from eprocure.gov.in/cppp.

    Earlier, indiiantelevision.com had reported that FreeDish had plans to add 24 new channels, increasing the number from 80 to 104.

    The platform has space for 80 channels altogether, including its own channels and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV along with 24 All India Radio channels.

    Sources told indiantelevision.com that FreeDish is being encrypted through iCAS to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, but it would remain free-to-air.

    MUMBAI: Pubcaster Prasar Bharati is taking another stab at digitizing and monetising the huge archival content catalogue that is lying in the shelves of All India Radio and Doordarshan. And it is all set to make a formal request to the ministry of broadcasting and broadcasting (MIB) for nearly Rs 250 crore to help it achieve what it intends to do. It says included in this archive are prominent speeches of national leaders, popular programmes and music.

    Prasar Bharati officials recently made a presentation to the MIB enumerating why it needs to do this. Sources say both Doordarshan and All India Radio have millions of hours of both audio and video content. In fact, All India Radio had digitized some of its content around a decade ago and even monetized some of it by selling CDs. The UK pubcaster BBC is amongst the world’s largest exporters of TV content with worldwide sales of around 400 million Euros. If Prasar Bharati manages even 10 per cent of that, it will more than recover its digitization costs.

    The problem, however, is that its archive has not been maintained in the best manner and is on beta and VHS tapes, many of which could be damaged or unrecoverable. And some of it could be have been stolen or lost.

    It is also looking at drafting a syndication policy to sell its content worldwide to other media outlets or online directly to consumers.

    Says a media observer: “Hopefully, it takes up the task seriously this time and the MIB helps it see it through to conclusion. DD is in danger of becoming a dinosaur; digitisation will allow it to bring new legs to old content which a generation has not seen. It could be put out online or on mobile for consumption apart from finding customers for its clips worldwide.”

    DD begins work on next year’s govt. funding

    NEW DELHI: India’s television pubcaster Doordarshan, managed by Prasar Bharati, has begun an annual exercise to convey to the government the level of funding it could need for next financial year beginning April 1, 2017.

    While directing the various units  and centres under DD to send in their financial demands, a communiqué from the DD Directorate clarified that such budgeting should not  include any (financial) provisions for vacant posts.

    Prasar Bharati, which runs DD and All India Radio, like many other public broadcasters of the world, is funded with public money that the government allocates to it as part of the country’s annual budgetary
    proposals.

    The official communication from DD head office added that any liabilities from previous year’s budgetary support should be detailed, including separately listing reasons for exceeding allocated budgets for the financial year 2015-16 as also enumerating the likely effect that payment of certain government allowances, bonuses and increased payout to employees likely to have.

    It is estimated that Prasar Bharati has around 40,000 employees on its rolls.

    Though Prasar Bharat is an autonomous organisation, formed under an Act of Parliament of 1990 that was notified only in 1997 paving the way for its formal set up, a majority of its employees are still categorised as government officials, a hangover of pre-Prasar Bharati days when DD and AIR were media units of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB). Hence, any revision of pay scales for government officials, as notified earlier this year, has an effect of Prasar Bharati officials too.
