DD working to woo top producers for its nationals, Jaitley chairs meeting

NEW DELHI: Several producers who have made some memorable series for Doordarshan have promised to return if certain changes are made in the pattern of the financial agreements with them.

This assurance was given by the producers to Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State (MOS) Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and secretary Bimal Julka at a meeting initiated by Doordarshan director general Vijaylaxmi Chhabra. Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar and senior advisor Brig VAM Hussain were also present.

The Minister said that the pubcaster wanted to revive the trust of the producers in DD and come back, and this was generally welcomed by those present.

Hats Off Productions owner JD Majethia and also co-chairman of Association Of Motion Pictures & Television Programme Producers (AMPTPP) says, “The agenda of the meeting was that in the last 10-12 years with the birth of new general entertainment channels (GECs), DD had somewhere lost its glory. Now, DD wants to revive and expand its content portfolio with the help of top-line producers like us and bring back the long lost glory on DD.”

The producers said that the revenue sharing model of DD was not acceptable to them as the marketing was handled by the broadcaster. Issues relating to Intellectual Property Rights were also raised since it was said that DD reserved the copyright of the works of the producers and they wanted an examination of this.

On behalf of DD, they were assured that the pubcaster would examine the schemes under which serials are obtained since it has already stopped commissioning of programmes.

It is learnt that consequent to the meeting, DD has re-drafted the guidelines relating to the self-financing scheme and will await the remarks of the producers before giving it a final shape.

The meeting was attended by producers namely – BP Singh (Fireworks Productions), Sunjoy Wadhwa (Sphereorigins chairman and managing director), Abhimanyu Singh (Contiloe Entertainment) and others. It is also learnt that Chhabra visited Mumbai to meet some producers in this connection.

  • DD gets watermarked

    DD gets watermarked

MUMBAI: The pubcaster has finally got itself inked for ratings. Doordarshan’s 20 channels have got watermarked as per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India’s standards for viewership ratings.

Doordarshan, which has been a founding member of the measurement council, took a while to get the channels watermarked. As per sources, the cost of watermarking a channel costs around Rs 20 lakh and the pubcaster has spent close to Rs 4.5 crore to get the technology on board.

The audience measurement company has already got on board 250 channels that have ordered for watermarking embedders. Half of this has already been installed.

The watermarking technology has been taken from Netherlands based Civolution and field testing of the meters is underway for homologating them to Indian conditions. As BARC India has consistently maintained, the meters have been assembled in India at a fraction of the cost of global suppliers.

Deals with 26 vendor partners such as Intel, Hansa, Mediametrie, Civolution, Markdata, Magic9Media across 12 processes have been finalised. It also claims that this is the largest such audience measurement system globally with cutting edge technology.

The government has laid down policy guidelines that prescribe a minimum of 20, 000 homes, which BARC India feels isn’t enough in the long run. It has also opted for the harder and tougher method of assembling systems from various vendors to offer a superior and cost effective output.

  • DD appoints Tauquir Zaidi as ad sales head

DD appoints Tauquir Zaidi as ad sales head

MUMBAI: The public broadcaster has added another executive to strengthen its advertising and sales division. Tauquir Zaidi has been appointed as network sales head.

The move is in coherence with its aim to roll out its full fledged professional advertising and sales team. Zaidi will be based in New Delhi.

He said, “Most of us have grown watching DD and the programs are still fresh in our minds. Serials like Buniyad, Mahabharat, Humlog, Nukkad and so many others are still a cult of this industry. This is the only organisation that believes in ‘finite fiction’ without falling into the trap of TVTs. Today all GECs start a fiction without planning its end /climax. The length of the serial depends on the ratings it gets, which does no justice to the story. Call of the hour is to put an effective strategy and recruit right team to implement those strategies.”

He will be first developing a promotional strategy to identify core target markets and setting measurable goals to multiply revenue. According to him, the success of an organisation is to implement a well-thought marketing plan by providing feasible solutions to clients.

Zaidi has over 17 years of experience in the field of ad sales with companies such as Star India, NDTV and Times Television Network

  • DD awaits Prasar Bharati’s nod for a HD channel

DD awaits Prasar Bharati’s nod for a HD channel

NEW DELHI: In the era of high definition, Doordarshan, proved its mettle in telecasting in HD mode as early as 2010.

The pubcaster had then shown the Commonwealth Games held in the national capital in HD feed, even before the other private channels entered the segment.

Doordarshan is ready to launch a national channel in a parallel HD mode, as per the sources within the pubcaster, but is awaiting a nod from the  Prasar Bharati board.

Prasar Bharati sources however told indiantelevision.com that the issue of a separate HD channel had not been put up before the board.

Currently, DD News is telecasting the Commonwealth Games from Glasgow in high definition on its terrestrial transmitters while covering more of the games/events where Indians are participating.

It is learnt that DD Sports and Ten Sports failed to reach an agreement on the issue, and the Ministry had issued a showcause notice to Ten Sports, last week, for declining to share the feed with DD Sports. Under the The Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act 2007 as it is considered a sports event of national importance, it is mandatory for the rights holder (Ten Sports, in this case) to share the broadcast with Prasar Bharati.

The sports event is mandated to be carried on the terrestrial network to ensure that viewers who do not have access to cable or DTH services can also view the games.
