    Pvt b’casters also to gain from new DTT model by Feb; Rs 320 cr budgeted

    MUMBAI: Pubcaster Doordarshan is making strategic plans to expand its digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) service across India. The public broadcaster, which runs the service in 16 cities at present, will be expanding it to three more cities by March 2017. Plans are afoot to further expand DTT to 44 additional cities in two years. The pubcaster will invest around Rs 320 crore to achieve its targets by 2018.

    Doordarshan has, for this purpose, also tied up with Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIMA) to develop a relevant business model for the platform which it expects will be drafted by February 2017.

    The DTT service is an internet-free distribution service, through which consumers are able to receive television channels on the move or at home through television sets, tablets and smartphones with the use of a unique dongle and a DD application.

    Doordarshan director-general Supriya Sahu said that the business model would be ready by February. As reported by indiantelevision.com earlier, they might, Sahu added, share the capacity by auctioning channel slots to the private broadcasters, which could be a game-changer for the industry.

Meantime, Doordarshan on 23 December held a workshop with stakeholders to explore the potential of DTT services. Experts from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, various stakeholders including Content providers, private broadcasters, receiver manufactures, and officers at Doordarshan participated.

    DD, which presently has the exclusive domain over terrestrial broadcasting, ranks amongst the world’s largest terrestrial television networks. It has a network of 1412 analog transmitters that provide TV services through two national channels namely, DD National and DD News. In addition to this, the network also broadcast several regional TV channels over the terrestrial network in a time sharing mode to meet the local and regional needs of people in different parts of the country. All TV channels provided by DD are free-to-air.

    In its paper, TRAI had asked whether DTT broadcasting should be opened for participation by the private players, and which model or a combination thereof for DTT will be most suitable in Indian context.

    DD’s digital terrestrial transmission meet today as TRAI paper awaits finalisation

    NEW DELHI: Even as a consultation paper on Digital Terrestrial Transmission by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is pending finalisation, Doordarshan is holding a workshop with stakeholders to explore the potential of DTT services.

    The workshop on “Digital Terrestrial Transmission: Business Opportunities” is being organized on 23 December 2016 in the capital and will be addressed by experts.

    Experts from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, various stakeholders including Content providers, private broadcasters, receiver manufactures, and officers at Doordarshan will be participating in this workshop.

    In the paper issued on 22 June 2016, TRAI wanted to know if stakeholders perceive the need for introduction of DTT in multiple broadcasting distribution platforms and what the appropriate strategy for DTT implementation across the country should be.

Later, the website quoted then Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer Jawhar Sircar as saying that the pubcaster had itself cleared this more than a year earlier, even while pointing out that this would necessitate use of the Prasar Bharati infrastructure.

    Trai also wanted to know what the approach for implementing DTT network (MFN/SFN/Hybrid) should be and how many digital multiplex per DTT operator should be planned for metro, major cities, urban and rural areas.

    Expert opinion had also been sought on the most appropriate frequency band as per National Frequency Allocation Plan 2011 for implementation of Digital terrestrial transmission including mobile TV.

    The DTT platform is flexible and content format agnostic – newer formats of TV channels such as HD TV, 3D TV, UHD TV, data and radio services etc. can thus be delivered with reduced transmission power requirements. Digitisation also allows for government bodies to reclaim spectrum and repurpose it.

    With standardized DTT transmission and clear advantages in terms of effective frequency utilization as well as enhanced TV quality, many countries the world over have laid down clear roadmaps to switch-off analog terrestrial TV transmission with a transition to DTT. In India, though work for changeover from Analog terrestrial transmission to digital terrestrial transmission by DD has already commenced, a clear roadmap is however unavailable.

    MUMBAI: English Entertainment emerged as the number one gainer in week 39 of Chrome Data and Analytics. The sector registered 30.4 per cent opportunity to see (OTS) and Comedy Central led the genre with 45.6 per cent OTS.

    Next in the row is Hindi News in Hindi-speaking market (HSM) which recorded 27. 2 per cent of OTS With DD News leading the sector with 97.7 per cent OTS.

    Kids genre on an all-India basis registered an increase of 12.4 per cent of OTS. Cartoon Network bagged the first position in the sector with 81.0 per cent of OTS. English Movies on the other hand grabbed the fourth slot in the list of gainer with 11.2 per cent of OTS and Movies Now emerges as the number one channel with 46.9 per cent of OTS.

    Last but not the least, the sports genre across India registered 6.5 per cent OTS with DD Sports leading the sector with 91.7 per cent OTS.

    The music genre, Hindi Movies, Hindi GEC, religious and English news are among the sectors which fail to garner positive ratings.

    The music genre this week witnessed a drop of 17.8 per cent of OTS led the top loser list and Sony Mix topped the genre with 90.8 per cent of OTS. Hindi Movies in HSM dropped by 17.4 per cent with Max leading the space with 93.0 per cent of OTS.

    Along with Hindi movies genre, Hindi GEC too saw a drop and decreased by 6.2 per cent. DD National garnered 98.9 per cent of OTS.

    Religious sector witnessed a fall of 4.3 per cent of OTS and Aastha led the list with 98.9 per cent. English News in six metros registered 3.7 per cent fall. Lok Sabha emerged as the most affected channel with 93.5 per cent of OTS.

    NEW DELHI: The Government has made it clear that the prime minister Narendra Modi’s monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast does not cover any public policy or announcements.

    The minister of state for information and broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore said in the Parliament that “Mann Ki Baat is a unique initiative of the prime minister to reach across to the masses through the Radio and connect with the common man on regular basis, inform them about the initiatives of the Government and seek their support in nation building and governance”.

    He added that through this programme the Prime Minister has directly shared his concerns on issues affecting citizens of the country like cleanliness, saving the girl child, welfare of Divyangs, uprooting the menace of drugs and road rage etc. It also provides the listener an opportunity to suggest topics and issues faced by the common man and thus become a part of participative governance.

    The prime minister has now made the broadcast for 26 months.

    All India Radio has commenced the regional language broadcast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ immediately after the Hindi broadcast is over.

    AIR Director General Fayyaz Sheheryar told Indiantelevision.com’s sister concern Radioandmusic.com that this will be in addition to the broadcast on regional kendras that comes at 8.00 pm on the last Sunday of the month when the Prime Minister makes his broadcast. He said that AIR had advertised before this broadcast that listeners can catch the broadcast on the entire AIR network including medium wave and FM Gold and FM Rainbow.

    In addition, the broadcast is carried live on Doordarshan National, DD News, DD Bharati, DD India and DD Kisan.    

    The broadcast can also be heard on the AIR Mobile App ‘All India Radio Live’ on Android, IOS and Windows and also give a missed call on 1922 to listen to the broadcast.

    It is streamed live by pmonradio.nic.in, allindiaradio.gov.in, newsonair.nic.in, and youtube/user/akashvaniair.

    It is also available free to all private television channels and FM channels. Letters can be sent on MyGov.in, and NarendraModi App.

    DD media partner of Ziro Festival

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan is the media partner of the Ziro Festival of Music (ZFM) commencing today at the remote Ziro valley of Arunachal Pradesh.

    ZFM is a four-day festival organised by a cultural organisation with the support of Tourism Department of Arunachal Pradesh and Ministry of Development of North East region (DoNER). The festival will continue till 25 September.

    Doordarshan director-general Supriya Sahu said this was the first time that DD was associating with the unique festival, and it was a part of strengthening DD programmes in the north-east region.

    Doordarshan Kendra, Itanagar (Arunachal) and Programme Production Centre (NE) of the Guwahati Kendra will provide intensive coverage of the entire festival. It will be telecast on DD-National, DD-Bharati, DD-India, DD-North East and Doordarshan Kendra Itanagar. DD-News will also cover the festival.

    Sahu said that, as a public service broadcaster, Doordarshan hopes that it would promote local tourism at Ziro Valley through its national telecast. The festival, which started in 2012, attracts large numbers of tourists to the state.

    ZFM is one of the most popular outdoor festivals attracting artistes from the region as well as internationally-renowned artistes and travellers from across the world. Ziro Valley is a world heritage site and is home to the Apatani agrarian tribe.
