Prasar Bharati’s DD Network sees a decline in its gross unique viewership

Mumbai: Prasar Bharati has overall maintained the same position in their genres vis-a-vis private channels in the last three years, as per Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) ratings. As per BARC data for the subscribed DD channel, the gross unique viewership across the network for the past three years has declined and for the current year (till the second week of July i.e. upto week 28) has reached 633 million. The I&B minister Anurag Thakur informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Public sector broadcaster Prasar Bharati’s Doordarshan (DD) Network’s gross unique viewership in 2021 was at 684 million as compared to 2020, which was at 747 million views. A total of 760 million views were registered in 2019, as per the BARC’s TV viewership data. This viewership data is also for DD News and DD India till 2 October 2020 and between December 2021 & March 2022.

Currently, the government is taking corrective measures to increase the viewership of DD channels. It is focusing on improving the quality of programmes and providing relevant content to the viewers.

In response to a question on whether the government is improving the quality of programmes telecast on the Doordarshan and facing competition from the private TV channels, the minister said, “Prasar Bharati is the public broadcaster and its primary duty is to carry out public broadcasting services to inform, educate and entertain the public and to ensure a balanced development of broadcasting on radio and television. Its purpose is not solely commercial but to reach those areas where no private broadcaster would venture.”

The minister added, “Doordarshan is committed to quality content and has accordingly taken several steps to produce and acquire high-quality programmes for its network.”

He mentioned that Doordarshan has also launched the ‘Content Sourcing Portal’ for submission of suo-moto proposals under the Direct Assignment Process (DAP) by production houses. Doordarshan Kendras across the country are upgraded with the introduction of the latest equipment video walls for quality production. The quality of program production, post-production and broadcast has improved with modernization and upgradation.

Mentioning the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) scheme, Thakur said that the public broadcaster was allocated a total of Rs 593 crore under the scheme out of which the total expenditure was Rs 653 crore. The fund was used for the modernisation and augmentation of the capital infrastructure of Doordarshan and for improving the quality of transmission & programmes.

In the financial year 2021-22, Prasar Bharati was allocated a fund of Rs 175 crore out of which the expenditure was Rs 162 crore. A total of Rs 183 crore was allocated in the financial year 2020-21 and the expenditure was Rs 202 crore. However, the allocated fund was Rs 234 crore in the financial year 2019-20 with an expenditure of Rs 289 crore.

DD India now available in HD

MUMBAI: Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekar Vempati announced today that DD India is going high definition. From October 3, the channel will be available in HD. The broadcaster had ventured into the HD arena with DD National and DD News back in 2017.

Minister of information & broadcasting Prakash Javadekar congratulated both Prasar Bharti and Doordarshan officials on the launch.

DD India is available in 146 countries all over the globe. It is an English news channel service which also airs programmes for the Indian diaspora and those interested in all things desi.

Prasar Bharti’s decision to push aggressively into the HD playing field is a welcome, if belated, move. Most private broadcasters in India had spun off HD cousins of their standard definition channels more than a decade ago. And internationally, most pubcasters have started experimenting with the 4K format. One Indian broadcaster, TravelXP, has in fact already launched a 4K channel internationally. Whereas in Japan and parts of Europe, TV shows are being test–transmitted in 8K by public broadcasters.

  • Prasar Bharati on a Covid-19 awareness drive

Prasar Bharati on a Covid-19 awareness drive

MUMBAI: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is making all efforts to educate and inform its viewers regarding the Covid-19 pandemic by leveraging its vast network of broadcast, radio and digital services. The pubcaster operates the largest network of TV and radio with thousands of transmitters and hundreds of stations/channels/services spread across the country.

DD News and DD India on TV, AIR on radio and Prasar Bharati News Service (PBNS) and NewsOnAir app on digital are playing lead roles in keeping the people informed.

“Our first priority has been to ensure that authentic news and information is made available to the citizens. The pubcaster has put in tremendous energy and effort towards informing and educating the citizens regarding COVID-19,” says Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati.

Both DD news and AIR news have created a special COVID-19 bulletin twice a day in English and Hindi with designated slots. These bulletins have been made available digitally through a dedicated YouTube playlist for the benefit of private media. A dedicated channel has also been designated on DD FreeDish to continuously stream COVID-19 informational videos and news. The same is also available digitally via YouTube, informs Vempati.

He says: “As a contingency plan, the national news streams on both TV and Radio have been made accessible to all the regional services as a fall-back mechanism so that no channel or station goes blank during the lockdown. Even vacant slots on DD Free Dish are continuously streaming COVID-19 information during this period.”

The pubcaster is airing informational videos at high frequency on all TV channels and equivalent jingles on all radio services. A dedicated bi-lingual national news service has also been started by AIR News which is available on all FM, MW, DTH and web.

Vempati says, “The greatest impact of the pubcaster is in regional services and local languages. Both TV and radio are innovating and using digital tools to keep the news and information going despite lockdown. Several of these regional efforts have been reported upon by media across the country. All of this is being curated and shared on social media from our main twitter handles apart from being aggregated in the NewsOnAir App.”

The pubcaster’s global digital platform, NewsOnAir App, aggregates all of TV and radio content digitally. It is available on both Android and iOS. The app has more than 200 radio streams from across India. It has several audio-on-demand content; this includes hourly news bulletins in all Indian and several foreign languages to entertainment content, including historic shows of Vividh Bharati. NewsOnAir is a one-stop App for experiencing all of public broadcasting content.

Vempati believes that the suspension in the production of original content is the time for innovation. “The entire industry has been impacted with the production coming to a halt. But we see this as a period for content innovation for new and unique formats and genres of content to emerge. Our radio teams are working on the same, leveraging remote communication tools to generate new content; as an example we had an early morning show of bird songs crowdsourced from across India. Also, in the pipeline are radio plays and book reading.”

MIB mulls broadcast of DD News to 100 countries

MUMBAI: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is contemplating its expansion of Doordarshan’s 24-hour news broadcast to around 100 countries with a view to reaching out to the world and putting forth India’s viewpoint on domestic and international issues, according to an Economic Times report.

Primarily, DD India is into producing various cultural and general entertainment programmes for broadcast in overseas countries.

The channel also produces 24-hour news and current affairs programmes that are limited to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE and China.

The decision to start broadcast of news in a particular country will depend on financial implications such as cost of engaging a local cable for carrying the Indian channel as well as stationing correspondents in that particular country, according to a senior official.

The factors that would also be considered for starting a news broadcast in a country include the percentage of the Indian diaspora in the total population of that nation, foreign direct investment inflow and outflow, remittance and tourists arrival from that country, the official said.

The ministry will also look at whether India has strategic partnership with that nation, number of visits of the prime minister to that country, whether the Ministry of External Affairs has a joint secretary level officer there and proximity of that nation to multilateral agencies.
