    DD Freedish to acquire ByDesign’s CAS technology for MPEG4 expansion

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan’s free-to-air (FTA) direct to home (DTH) service Freedish is planning to acquire Bangalore based ByDesign India’s conditional access system (CAS) so as to increase its channel offerings to 112 from the current 64 by the end of March 2016.

     

    In conversation with Indiantelevision.com, DD Director General C Lalrosanga said that the DTH player will switch over to MPEG 4 from the current MPEG 2 in two phases. “The first phase may begin by early next month,” he informed.

     

    Late last year, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) approved a proposal by ByDesign India to develop an Indian conditional access system. ByDesign was to receive a support amount of Rs 19.79 crore from DeitY to develop the new system in association with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

     

    The ByDesign model is totally indigenous and built for DVB-C setup. This CAS solution will enable broadcasters to control access to their services by viewers, and thereby enabling them to extend their business models to subscription based schemes.

     

    This will mean that the Freedish will become encrypted but will remain FTA. In addition to helping increase the number of channels on the platform, this will enable Freedish to gauge the exact number of households relying on Freedish as encrypted set top boxes (STBs) will only be available with authorised dealers.

     

    Lalrosanga said that collection of rural data by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India had shown that the claims made by Doordarshan about its reach were not erroneous. He said the BARC ratings had shown that both DD and Freedish had a tremendous reach in semi-urban and rural areas all over the country.

     

    Lalrosanga went on to add that many homes were gradually switching over to Freedish as they could then get their entire entertainment for a one-time fee of purchasing a dish, which cost as low as Rs 700 to Rs 1200.

     

    Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar had said earlier this year that Freedish’s aim was to reach 112 channels within a year or so.

     

    At present, there is no vacant slot on Freedish since all channels that were on the platform and whose licences had expired have come back through the 24 e-auctions conducted over the past year.

     

    Interestingly, the two new entrants on the platform – Aaj Tak and Big Magic – are pay channels, which are being run as FTA on Freedish. DD sources said that the reference interconnect agreement signed by these two channels no longer carries any non-discriminatory clause as it refers to Freedish.

     

    Lalrosanga also added that DD was working towards bringing regional language films to the prime time slots over the weekend. Additionally, the pubcaster was actively thinking on the lines of a dedicated channel for children and young people.

    MUMBAI: Television audience ratings measurement body Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India after the roll-out of its rural data has changed the entire dynamics of television viewership. BARC India’s rural roll-out resonated Bob Dylan’s famous lines in every ear as an alarm. Don’t speak too soon, for the wheel’s still in spin. And there’s no tellin’ who That it’s namin’. For the loser now Will be later to win, For the times they are a-changin. The rural data certainly gave all the followers wings of fire which got them right over the leaders who probably never thought of trailing.

     

    But once that has happened, it was time for the erstwhile leaders to act and act fast before too much damage was done. Big Magic Ganga, the Bhojpuri channel from Anil Dhirubhai Ambani’s broadcast conglomerate Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL) had been leading the urban tally with over 45 per cent of the viewership share since BARC’s inception. Week 41 ratings of BARC India which had the rural data included in it saw the channel sliding down to the fifth position with a humongous difference when compared to the leaders.

     

    The top brass then got together to work out a strategy and the permutations and combinations lead them to the best friend of rural India – DD Freedish. DD Freedish is Doordarshan’s direct-to-home innovation which enables one to watch content for free. There is only a one time charge that one needs to bear and after that it’s free for life.

     

    “In the urban market we were undisputed number one. But after BARC started to roll out its rural data we lost our position. 85 per cent of the total viewers in Bihar and Jharkhand are DD Freedish subscribers, hence we decided to have a presence on the platform” says RBNL COO Ashwin Padmanabhan  

     

    The decision did not take much time turn the tables, as with a rating of 38455 (000s Sum) the channel leapfrogged to second position, below Bhojpuri Cinema which garnered 41361 (000s Sum) in week 45. “We are happy to see the surge and it has been just a week. The others on the list were there on DD Freedish since a very long time” explains Padmanabhan.

     

    Big Magic Ganga has 5 to 6 hours of original content curated keeping the local sentiments in mind. The programming is also a strong weapon for the channel says Padmanabhan. Elucidating further he says, “From the beginning we have believed that content is what drives the channel to success. We invested on setting up a local team which works extensively to create relevant content. Recently we did a special programme on Chatt and it emerged as one of the top 5 shows in the genre. We will continue to explore and create original content which the viewers will cherish.”

     

    Phase III of digitisation has a deadline of 31 December. Padmanabhan feels that the mandatory shifting to DAS might see a huge number of consumers shifting to DD Freedish. “Buying a set-top box itself is an expensive proposition and after that the cost per house will also go up. Why will people pay more while they can watch content for free on DD Freedish. Having said so, digitization will help us grow the subscription revenue so it’s good for broadcasters” says Padmanabhan.

     

    There is no subscription revenue that comes out of DD Freedish, since it is a free platform. In markets like Bihar and Jharkhand a channel like Big Magic Ganga does not rely on subscription revenue at this stage informs Padmanabhan. The COO says, “Advertisement is directly proportional to viewership and quality of content. Our advertisers are happy to associate with us as they know the content we create is relevant to viewers and hence it provides them the platform to garner eyeballs.”

     

    FMCG leads the tally while is comes to category of advertisers closely followed by automobile companies. Two wheelers and affordable cars are seen frequently during breaks. Local advertisers which want to target that particular audience are also seen frequently between breaks.

     

     

    A media planner on condition of anonymity says, “The ad rates for a 10 second slot in a channel like Big Magic Ganga used to be close to Rs 1000. But after the rural roll-out now it would be somewhere between Rs 2000-3000. Post January we might see a further inclination to the ad rates depending on how the broadcasters plan out their strategy.”

     

    Creating content is not enough to reach out to a huge number. Every initiative needs to be backed by aggressive marketing says Padmanabhan. He further adds, “We believe in marketing each and every product independently. If a particular product needs an aggressive on-ground push, we opt for on-ground marketing initiatives. Depending on the product, we curate our marketing strategy. Radio, print, outdoor, cross network promotions are the mediums that we normally use.”

     

    The COO wants to see the channel an undisputed leader not only in terms of viewership but also content and revenue. “170 – 180 GRP is what I am eying at in terms of viewership while a 200 to 300 per cent surge in the ad rates is my target in terms of ad-revenue growth. I am confident that by January once the new rating phenomenon settles down we will meet the target” Padmanabhan concludes.

    MUMBAI: HomeShop18 has hopped on to Prasar Bharati’s direct to home (DTH) platform DD FreeDish.

     

    With this new e-auction win, the channel will reach out to an additional 18 million subscribers of the Indian free-to-air (FTA) DTH broadcasting platform.

     

    The channel has been made available on DD FreeDish from 1 November, 2015.

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan earned a sum of Rs 57.1 crore in the 23rd e-auction of its free-to-air DTH platform Freedish on 19 October, with 14 channels coming into its fold. 

     

    Prasar Bharati CEO had said earlier this year that the aim was to reach 112 channels within a year or so, when FreeDish moves from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4, for which official clearance is still awaited.

     

    Doordarshan deputy director general C K Jain told Indiantelevision.com that while 10 television channels had come back, four channels had won bids to fill vacant slots.

     

    Doordarshan had set a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot (as in the last few auctions) for the online e-auction, but all the bids were between Rs 4 to Rs 4.2 crore.

     

    Sadhana National, which is a new entrant, bid the highest with Rs 4.2 crore. On the other hand, nine channels bid Rs 4.1 crore and four channels bid Rs 4 crore.

     

    The other new entrants are Sony Mix, the Big Magic Ganga, which is a new Bhojpuri channel from the Reliance Group, and Home Shop18.

     

    The channels whose licences had expired and got renewed are: ABP News, India TV, Cinema TV, Enterr 10, 9XM, Dabbang, Masti, Chardhi Kala Times, B4U Movies, and Maha Movie.

     

    In the 22nd auction on 22 September, it managed to auction eight slots for around Rs 31.3 crore.

     

    Jain said Freedish will be encrypted shortly from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, but it would remain free-to-air.

     

    Currently, Freedish has 64 channels including its own channels, and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV.

    NEW DELHI: Less than four weeks after the last e-auction, Doordarshan will be holding the 23rd e-auction for its free-to-air DTH platform Freedish on 19 October in an attempt to touch the target of 112 television channels in the next few months.

     

    Doordarshan has set a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot (as in the last few auctions) for the online e-auction, though Indiantelevision.com learnt that the bid amount went up to Rs 4.7 crore in earlier e-auctions.

     

    In the 22nd auction on 22 September, it managed to auction eight slots for around Rs 31.3 crore.

     

    DD sources refused to divulge the number of slots being auctioned to prevent bidders forming consortia to bid or resort to other malpractices.

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan earned Rs 31.3 crore from the auction of eight slots to Indian television channels on its free-to-air DTH platform Freedish in the 22nd e-auction.

     

    The latest e-auction was held on 22 September. DD’s attempt is to touch the target of 112 television channels in the next few months.

     

    Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, DD deputy director general C K Jain said that against the reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot for the online e-auction, it earned the highest figure of Rs 4.2 crore from Sanskaar channel, which has come on to the platform for the first time.

     

    Another channel, which has hopped on to the Freedish platform for the first time is WOW Cinema.

     

    The other channels are: IBN7, Aastha, Aastha Bhajan, News Nation, Bhojpuri Cinema, and Dangal. While these channels were a part of Freedish earlier, they had to re-bid as their contract had expired.

     

    The auction was held barely six weeks after the last e-auction in August, which earned DD Rs 23.2 crore.

     

    Indiantelevision.com has also learnt that the bid amount went up to Rs 4.7 crore in earlier e-auctions.

     

    DD sources said that while Freedish may be encrypted soon from Mpeg 2 to Mpeg4 to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, it would remain free-to-air.

    Doordarshan has set a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot (as in the last few auctions) for the online e-auction, though Indiantelevision.com learnt that the bid amount went up to Rs 4.7 crore in earlier e-auctions.

     

    In the 21st auction on 12 August, DD Freedish managed to auction six slots for approximately Rs 23.2 crore.

     

    However, DD sources refused to divulge the number of slots being auctioned to prevent bidders forming consortia to bid or resort to other malpractices.

     

    Sources also said that while Freedish may be encrypted from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 shortly to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, it would remain free-to-air.

     

    The e-auction will be conducted by C1 India Pvt. Ltd., Noida which is also conducting the FM Radio Phase III auctions on behalf of Prasar Bharati.   

     

    The reserve price in the 15th e-auction was Rs 3 crore and was raised to Rs 3.7 crore in the 16th auction.

     

    Currently, Freedish has 64 channels including its own channels, and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV.

     

    The participation amount (EMD) in the e-auction is Rs 1.5 crore, which has to be deposited in advance before or by 12 noon on 22 September along with the non-refundable processing fee of Rs 10,000 in favour of PB (BCI) Doordarshan Commercial Service, New Delhi.

     

    Incremental amount for the auction will be Rs 10 lakh and the time for every slot e-auction will be of 15 minutes duration.

     

    Of the reserve price, Rs 1.1 crore has to be deposited within one month of placement and another Rs 1.1 crore within two months along with service tax of 14 per cent on the bid amount.

     

    The balance bid amount needs to be deposited within six months, failing which the reserve price will be forfeited.

    NEW DELHI: While denying a slowdown in Doordarshan’s expansion plans, the Government said that new transmitters are not envisaged except for a few in the border areas.

     

    Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore told Parliament that this was in view of multichannel TV coverage having been provided in the entire country through Doordarshan’s free to air DTH service.

     

    However, as part of continuing schemes of 12th Plan, Doordarshan has set up High Power Transmitter (HPT) (interim setup) at Mehaboobnagar and a Very Low Power Transmitter (VLPT) at Joginder Nagar during the last three years. 

     

    Doordarshan has also approved five new transmitters to be set-up in Jammu and Kashmir: High Power Transmitters (DD1 & DD News) Rajouri; HPT, Natha Top (Patni Top); HPT, Himbotingla Top; and HPT, Green Ridge.

     

    A total of 21 radio channels (programmes) of AIR have been made available through DTH platform DD Freedish (Ku-band) and these can be received through a set top box all over the country including uncovered areas.

     

    Doordarshan’s terrestrial coverage is estimated to be available to about 92 per cent of population spread over 81 per cent area of the country.

     

    The areas uncovered by terrestrial transmitters along with rest of the country have been provided with multichannel TV coverage through Doordarshan’s free to air DTH service Freedish. It is possible to receive DTH signals anywhere in the country with the help of a small sized dish receive unit. Equipment for upgradation of DTH platform from 59 TV channels to 97 to 112 TV channels has been installed recently.

     

    Besides these, Doordarshan’s regular 22 channels are available on satellite mode and through cable network, which is the most preferred source of viewership and receptional viewership.

     

    DD is expanding its Freedish services for which viewers will get to see 112 channels as against 59 at present.

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan’s free-to-air direct-to-home Freedish platform, which was telecasting 59 channels until recently has added two more channels to its kitty. What’s more, the platform is further looking at adding three more channels to its offerings soon, taking the total number of channels to 64.

     

    In fact, another channel will come on board the platform before the end of the month, according to deputy director general C K Jain.

     

    Clarifying the situation, Jain told Indiantlevision.com that 61 channels had been allotted and another three would be allotted shortly. The last two channels to be allotted were Sony Pal and Dillagi, which is still to go on air.

     

    A total of 20 e-auctions have been held so far, the latest being earlier this week. DD expects to reach a target of Rs 120 crore through these auctions by the end of March this year.

     

    Doordarshan had set a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot for the 20th online e-auction, though Indiantelevision.com learnt that the bid amount went up to Rs 4.2 crore in the 17th e-auction held on 12 November.

     

    The attempt is to touch the target of 112 television channels in the next few months, Jain said. He said that the delay had been partly due to some technical problems, which were being sorted.

     

    Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar had said recently that the future of Doordarshan was in Freedish and digitisation. He had added that this may mean that some channels would have to be attracted to Freedish by means other than e-auction.

     

    DD sources also said that while Freedish may be encrypted to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, it would however remain free-to-air.

     

    As all these channels are on MPEG2. Freedish, which uses Insat 4B, is migrating from its old platform to a new upgraded platform with MPEG4 in an attempt to increase its capacity. The migration would result in increase of TV channels from 59 to 64 and radio channels from 22 to 24.

     

    Sircar had said in November that while most were coming through e-auctions, some popular channels may have to be ‘attracted’ to join Freedish since satellite television was the future.  

     

    To access the upgraded platform, the viewers need to edit the transponder parameter by changing only the symbol rate from 27500Ksps to 28500 Ksps in four transponders and retune/rescan their Set Top Box (STB) to receive the upgraded TV and radio channels.

     

    Viewers/subscribers who do not rescan their STB will continue to get ten channels for a period of seven days only from the date of upgradation. Out of these ten channels, one channel is an informative channel, which will show detailed procedure for re-tuning the STBs.

    NEW DELHI: Even as the stalemate continues on the issue of the Gyandarshan channels of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the Government has said that these channels do not have clearance from Wireless Planning Coordination (WPC) of the Communications & IT Ministry.

     Information and Broadcasting Ministry sources told indiantelevision.com that Prasar Bharati is unable to uplink on C-Band and Doordarshan is not being able to downlink these channels on DD Freedish.

     However, the pubcaster runs a half-hour programme of IGNOU, University Grants Commission (UGC) & Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) on DD National. The Government had introduced four educational channels: Gyandarshan 1, Gyandarshan 2, Vyas Channel and Eklavya Channel.

    Out of these, Gyandarshan 1 & 2 have been run by the Education Media Production Centre (EMPC) of IGNOU. Vyas Channel is being managed by UGC and Eklavya by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

    IGNOU used to uplink these channels on C-Band which was then taken by DD Freedish of Prasar Bharati.

    At present, however, these channels are off air since IGNOU has not cleared its dues to Prasar Bharati.
