Doordarshan to telecast bouquet of lively programmes on New Year’s eve

NEW DELHI: In a new twist to its New Year programmes, Doordarshan News has announced special awards for the best news story of the year.

DD News has listed 10 top coverages of the year and will give three top and 50 other prizes. Voting is on till 31 December night.

The news stories include the General Elections, the Swachhta Mission, Kailash Satyarthi winning Nobel Prize, Kashmir Floods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s American visit, Mars Mission, MH370 Disappearance, Peshawar School attack and so on.

DD National will mark the day with a 2014 news roundup from 8 pm to 9 pm, variety programmes  by regional kendras including Delhi for their respective regions from 9 pm to 10 pm, and the national telecast of the variety show ‘Masti ka Dhamaal – Aaya Nayaa Saal’ by the Mumbai Kendra of DD.

DD Bharati moves away from noisy entertainment to the quiet realms of home with yesteryears’ evergreen classics from 7:00 pm onwards on 31 December. The channel is marking New Year’s Eve by telecasting two choice light-hearted Hindi feature films from two different eras.

Chhalia is a 1960 Hindi drama film directed by Manmohan Desai; it stars Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Pran, Rehman and Shobhna Samarth.  Raj Kapoor played like almost patented a simple guy with a heart of gold. Kalyanji Anandji composed the music and has given Mukesh’s most popular songs “Chhalia Mera Naam, “Dum dum diga diga”, “Mere tootey hue dil se”’.

Shagird is a 1967 Indian Bollywood comedy film directed by Samir Gunguly. The film stars Joy Mukherjee and Saira Banu in lead roles. It is one of the few Hindi films made over the last 60 years that find a place of pride in the pantheon of classic comedies. The inimitable I.S. Johar as Professor Brij Mohan, with his deadpan expression and unique dialogue delivery, was the perfect foil for the exuberance of Joy Mukherjee as Ramesh.

Akashvani brings ‘Guldasta’; a bouquet of programmes from all kendras of All India Radio and a programme on music from 11:10pm.

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan director general Vijaylaxmi Chhabra has announced that steps are being taken to launch DD Kisan soon and to revamp the public service broadcaster’s international channel DD India.

Chhabra also highlighted other steps to revamp DD National, which now carries the tagline ‘Desh Ka Apna Channel.’

She said the main aim was to streamline DD National which is the primary channel of Prasar Bharati and has already adorned new colours of purple and pink with a fresh palette of programming. While getting set for competition with general entertainment channels, she stressed the channel will continue to focus on traditional family values – ‘Rishtey’, ‘Nation before Self’, ‘Rashtra Gaurav’ and ‘Trustworthiness – Dilon Mein Vishwas’.

When asked about the marketing plan for the revamp, she said DD was not averse to advertising on private news channels but had not yet commenced any commercials outside the DD network, newspaper campaigns and the social media.

Chhabra also said that programmes from the archives would be confined to DD Bharati.

Sapru said that the question he has raised is why four sons cannot support a woman in her old age when she supported them when they were young.

‘Jab Jab Bahar Ayee – Janmon Ka Bandhan Ya Bandhish’ by Dolly Sohi at 10.00 pm is a serial which touches upon a dilemma of husband and wife trying to keep their family together and finding happiness not withstanding their personal differences.

DD National is also building its weekend prime-time with two shows ‘Janmon Ka Bandhan – Insaani Rishton Ka Tana Bana’ produced by Sadhika Randhawa and directed by Prem Chopra which will air from Friday to Sunday at 7.00 pm. The Ramayana or Ramkatha tradition is pervasive not only in India but throughout South East Asia. Stories revolving around Ram, Sita and Lakshman penetrate through rural and urban, mundane and religious, sacred and secular domains. They defy categorization of art as folk or classical, rural or urban, textual or oral. Literary, oral, kinetic and pictorial aspects intermingle to generate multiple renditions of the text in different locales and contexts; each rendition with unique local flavour and linguistic distinction. The performative aspect of the text makes it fluid, accessible and adaptable. It accounts for its preservation, survival, transmission and mobility, cutting across boundaries of time and space. Every region has its own particular form and style of singing and reciting the story.

Earlier this week with the start of Mahalaya, DD Bharati in association with the Girnar Kendra of Doordarshan presented ‘Maa Ni Chundari Lehrai’ from its rich collection of archives. Shevri is a Marathi film made in 2006 by the renowned Gajendra Ahire and produced by Neena Kulkarni. Noted Marathi actress Neena Kulkarni’s maiden production venture, Shevri (wisp of cotton) is a sensitive portrayal of the havoc played by divorce in a simple middle class woman’s life. The ‘Shevri’ in the title is embodied in the films protagonist Vidya Barve played by Neena herself, a helpless little soul drifting along with winds of change in her life, without a strong will or desire of her own. The title ‘Shevri’ suggests an insignificant wisp of cotton. Her coming to terms with her state today and becoming present to her life is what gives essence to the film which will be telecast on 13 September.

Girish Kasaravalli’s adaptation of Amaresh Nugadoni’s ‘Savaari’ is a film connoisseur’s delight.  Kanasemba Kudureyaneri (Riding a Stallion of a Dream) is a 2010 starring Vyjanath Biradar, Umashree and Sadashiv Brahmavar in lead roles. It won the National Award for Best Screenplay and for Best Feature film in Kannada. Kasarvalli’s use of non-linear narrative for the first time succeeds in building the audience’s curiosity. Engagingly convincing, Biradar and Umashree are seen throughout the movie in tattered clothes, getting every inch into the characters. The film will be telecast on 27 September.
