DD scoops Hockey India League live telecast rights for next three years

MUMBAI: There’s nothing more exciting that seeing a player with a hockey stick in his hand dribbling past the mid-field, swerving and dodging past the defending backs and reverse flicking the ball into the goal, leaving the goal keeper  stranded and flat on his back on the turf.

Many more such moments will be available to field hockey lovers  courtesy pubcaster Doordarshan, It has pocketed the rights to live  telecast the sixth edition of the Hockey India League (HIL), which will begin from 28 December 2024, thanks to an agreement it has signed with Hockey India (HI).( Reports are that the contract between the two is actually for the next three years.) What’s special with the new agreement is that DD will also be bringing the women’s HIL matches live to viewers apart from the fast-paced men’s. tournament.

Sports lovers may recall that the Indian national men’s team has been gradually getting back its mojo and won the bronze medal at this year’s Paris Olympics as well as in Tokyo.

HIL will have eight men’s teams and four women’s teams participating in Rourkela and Ranchi, showcasing outstanding talent from India and around the world.

Said Prasar Bharati chairman Navneet Sehgal: “We are privileged to partner with the HIL, a platform that celebrates our national sports and aligns people across different categories. Through our comprehensive coverage, we aim to bring the electrifying spirit of hockey, including the historic debut of Women HIL, to viewers everywhere, bridging the urban and rural divide and amplifying the league’s impact.”

With Doordarshan as our partner, we’re ready to present a spectacular season of HIL. ‘Hockey connects us, and this partnership strengthens that bond’.”

MUMBAI: Las Vegas. Normally labelled as Sin City. But in April it was all about the future of entertainment technology with the NAB Show opening with a bang. And what a bang it was. It is a hard knock for those who continue to resist the frenetic pace of technological evolution. One of these is ATSC 3.0 which is coming. Yes, even as it is spreading gradually in the US, it is being planned to come to India. That is if Sankhya Labs, Sinclair Broadcast, Doordarshan and Prasar Bharti succeed in its rollout.

I happened to see some trial broadcasts in the Las Vegas Convention Centre and it was awesome.

At early stages yet, ATSC 3.0 endeavours to wirelessly transmit data, video and audio, over the air without using the traditional terrestrial frequencies or the 4G, 5G or 6G spectrum. Also known as NextGen TV, it is a digital television standard developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), offering features such as ultra-high-definition video, high-efficiency video coding (HEVC), high dynamic range (HDR), immersive audio, and interactive capabilities.

Sankhya Labs has been working on developing semiconductor solutions and software for ATSC 3.0-enabled devices. These solutions encompass various aspects of ATSC 3.0 technology, including receivers, modulators, demodulators, and related software stacks. Sankhya Labs aims to offer cost-effective and scalable solutions to enable the deployment of ATSC 3.0 infrastructure and consumer devices in India and other markets. Currently, it has developed – and continues to develop –  the PCB, the software, the receiver and dongle, and set-top box designs which will then be farmed out for local manufacture.

I happened to see the transmitter developed by Sankhya at the NAB Show which will be mounted – when the service is ripe and ready to be rolled out – next to the cellular towers which dot Indian building terraces in urban and rural India. Then there is the dongle (looking like the early device we used to get connected to the internet) which will act as the receiver and can be attached to an ordinary smartphone with basic video capabilities and receive the transmitted video at almost no cost to the customer. (Remember there are more than 500 million smartphone users in this country and even if 10 per cent of them opt for ATSC 3.0 that will be a humungous base of 50 million viewers) For the home, users will have a set-top box (which Sankhya hopes to gradually decrease in size)  that will sit next to the TV set to receive the signals for family viewing.

As it does for FreeDish, DD is likely to auction channels to private broadcasters who can reach viewers with another linear service, thus giving traditional TV a new lease on life and advertisers another medium to target the vast masses of television viewers.  This is at a time when YouTube video, Instagram reels, free-to-air TV, and streaming services have totally disrupted satellite and cable pay TV services in India with cord-cutters, cord nevers reaching record highs. The streamers need help to retain clever viewers who are sharing passwords as well as churning when they finish watching shows that interest them in one service or another.

How long will ATSC 3.0  take to become a reality? Broadcasters, handset manufacturers, telcos have all blackballed it saying that it is a needless platform that is being created.

But Sankhya Labs and the NextGenTV committee would like it to spread tomorrow itself. Work has been going on for at least the past three to four years and it might take as much time for the government-owned broadcaster to give it a clear green signal. (I’m crossing my fingers DD moves fast once a government is formed at the Centre post the elections or a private company is given the responsibility of spreading ATSC 3.0 services in a public-private partnership.)  One can be optimistic and only hope that this exciting technology which can lead to the creation of zillions of local channels monitoring local traffic conditions, weather conditions, long-distance medicine, education, etc etc comes quickly enough.

When it does arrive, it will come with the potential to revolutionise the way we consume our entertainment once again. And oodles of other services.

  • “Swaraj is one of the most difficult shows we have worked on”: Contiloe Pictures’ Founder & CEO Abhimanyu Singh

“Swaraj is one of the most difficult shows we have worked on”: Contiloe Pictures’ Founder & CEO Abhimanyu Singh

Mumbai: ‘Swaraj – Bharat ke Swatantrata Sangram ki Samagra Gatha’, an Indian historical TV serial that aired on DD National channel has been eye-grabbing since its launch. The show that telecasted on India’s 75th Independence Day has potentially captured viewers’ attention for its storytelling and production work. The 75-episode mega serial was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and focuses on the contribution of the freedom fighters and unsung heroes of the freedom struggle.

It is an attempt by Doordarshan to bring alive the tales of courage of over 550 freedom fighters on television. Swaraj will tell stories and bring to focus contributions of heroes such as Rani Abbakka, Bakshi Jagabandhu, Tirot Sing, Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu, Shivappa Nayaka, Kanhoji Angre, Rani Gaidinliu, Tilka Majhi, Rani Lakshmibai, Maharaj Shivaji, Tatya Tope, Madam Bhikaji Kama, and more.

The show has been ideated by Contiloe Pictures’ Founder & CEO Abhimanyu Singh, who mainly produces Hindi-language television shows. His passion for storytelling kick-started two decades ago and has, over the years, created some stellar shows across genres including history, crime, horror, thriller, events, formats, comedies, animation, and mini-series, managing to constantly keep audiences engaged, ensuring they were interested in his style of storytelling and giving them enough reason to watch his shows. He has successfully made a place for himself in the media & entertainment industry and has received accolades for his work like “Mahayoddha Rama” & his debut digital franchise “State of Siege”. Deeply rooted in bringing out in-depth stories, he has successfully produced over 100 TV shows under his banner, including independent shows for Doordarshan, two feature films and two OTT projects so far and continues to focus on large productions.

Contiloe has produced historical shows like Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat, Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, Taj 21 Sarfarosh – Saragarhi 1897, Ek Veer Stree ki Kahaani… Jhansi Ki Rani and mythological shows like Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanumaan, Vighnaharta Ganesha, Yashomati Maiyya Ke Nandlala as well as digital series under his ‘State of Siege’ franchise, of which season three is in the making.

In an exclusive conversation with Indiantelevision.com, Singh shared insights about his shows and deliberated views on the challenges, responses from the audiences and further talked about his upcoming shows at length.

    Edited Excerpts:

On the response that Swaraj received from the audience

Abhimanyu: So far, the audience response has been fantastic. People are aware of the invasions that occurred in India but they are unaware of the specifics. It’s both informative and fascinating for the audience to learn about how the western invasion of India began and how it all culminated with our Independence in 1947.

On showcasing Swaraj on popular OTT platforms

Abhimanyu: The government is already interested in showing it on over-the-top (OTT) platforms. Prasar Bharati has recently made a move to invite digital partners, which will help the show to reach a potential audience.

On the making of the show

Abhimanyu: The procedure began at the beginning of 2021. It’s a lengthy process from research and scripting to shooting. It’s been a year and a half, and I believe the project will continue for at least another year. Researching and producing 75 episodes for the audience is a time-consuming process.

On the challenges of producing the show

Abhimanyu: The biggest challenge is that we have to produce 75 different stories. It’s not just one story that I’ve been running for a year and a half; it’s 75 different stories. So, preparing, researching, casting, and creating the mood is extremely difficult. Without a doubt, Swaraj is one of the most difficult shows that we have worked on.

It’s a responsibility and it’s a challenge, but we have a very strong, historical guidance, and a team of great researchers. You are telling 450 years of history. It spans across such a vast historical length. The enemies are constantly changing (From the 1st episode to the 75th episode, viewers will see freedom fighters fighting different characters), the invasions and heroes are constantly changing.

There is a tonne of work to be done on a single episode, including casting, changing the looks, changing the costumes, and more. I believe that has been the most difficult aspect in terms of ensuring that sensitivities and sensibilities are taken care of.

We have been doing history-based shows for 15 years, and we know what we should be careful of. The challenge emerges from the time period (historic) and the nature of the time more than anything else.

On the show’s shooting & locations

Abhimanyu: We are using various sets –  changing, retaining and repurposing all of them. Apart from that, we have shot in a variety of other locations as and when the need arose – whether it’s Delhi, Haryana and North East because the freedom struggle occurred throughout India, along with a lot of visual effects in various locations, and set extensions.

On prime minister Narendra Modi’s views about the show

Abhimanyu: To see the Prime Minister watching your episode is a very good experience. The Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Information & Broadcasting Minister and the entire Council of Ministers were invited to watch the episode. It is only the beginning. This journey will continue for another year and a half. So I strive to create a show that makes a difference, a show that tells our story to our people and the rest of the world.

    On the launching of India@75

Abhimanyu: More than strategically for me, it’s a very good gesture on the part of the Government. Making  such a good show, which educates people about our history and releasing it on the 75th celebration. After India has completed 75 years of independence, people are getting to know more about India and its freedom fights – the credit should be given to the Government.

On dubbing of the show in nine different languages

Abhimanyu: A lot of our content is being dubbed. Hanuman and Ganesha have both been dubbed in all of the southern languages, and they have done exceptionally well. Culturally, we are one. As far as our consumers are concerned, they are diverse. It’s one country. So, dubbing in various languages makes it easier for people to understand and helps us reach out to a wider audience. It’s not such a difficult task. We work with a lot of dubbing partners who are experts in their respective languages.

On his views on TV vs OTT

Abhimanyu: In my opinion, both will coexist but whether television will continue to exist in its current form is debatable. You have a younger audience that is not watching content on television sets. But your older audiences will continue to watch television on TV sets. However, television is now also being consumed as a ‘catch-up television’ on digital mobile phones.

When I was doing Ashoka six-seven years ago, I noticed that many people were watching Ashoka on their mobile phones rather than on television. So, you saw the disruption in consumer behaviour 10 years ago, and obviously, that has changed and gotten faster with the pandemic and introduction of 4G, which increased it further, and with 5G especially, it will change once again.

So, while there will undoubtedly be some disruption, television will continue to exist. But in what and in which form I don’t know; you may see television being consumed on mobile phones and iPads. There will be change but when that will occur, how quickly it will occur, or where that inflection point (a curve of viewership will change for TV) will occur,

    On the future shows

Abhimanyu: We are in the third part of the State of Siege, it’s going to be better. It’s going to capture a fantastic anti-insurgency operation that happened recently. We’re also working on a rather big historical (untitled) in the digital space. We have focused on two things – like all storytellers, we’re working on a nice story. And then the whole idea is to create another one or two franchises in a year. So that we were making substantial content and ensuring that we kept the viewers entertained.

So, we’ll be working on different aspects. One is obviously, in our digital space. Our sister company Illusion Reality Studioz has increased its footprint too, not only in visual effects and animation but also now lots of stuff that we’re doing in the meta space. It is something that is keeping us extremely busy. Learning a very new space really interests us as storytellers. We’re exploring how we can use the Metaverse as well for storytelling.

Amit Shah launches Doordarshan’s new serial ‘Swaraj- Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram ki Samagra Gatha’

New Delhi: The mega historical new Doordarshan’s Hindi serial ‘Swaraj- Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram ki Samagra Gatha’ was launched by Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday.

Launching the serial, he said the objective of “Swaraj” would be achieved in a true sense only if the country’s languages, dharma, culture and arts are preserved and its history passed on to future generations.

Sharing his thoughts on this new show, Shah recalled the time stalwarts like Pandit Jasraj and Ustal Bismillah Khan had said that if it had not been for Akashwani, they would not have existed. “It is not possible to spread the expression of the essence of India without Doordarshan & All India Radio,” he said.

The minister deliberated on the meaning of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and said it is not just a celebration of our freedom struggle but also of the achievements of the past 75 years since independence, of the sacrifices of the sung and unsung heroes of our freedom struggle.

“This is also a time when we are visualizing the contours of the future of India and India is only going to attain greater heights of excellence from here,” he added.

Swaraj is a 75 episode serial produced in 4K/HD quality and will air every Sunday from 9-10 pm on Doordarshan National from 14 August.

It is being dubbed in nine regional languages along with English. The serial in regional languages Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Oriya, Bengali and Assamese will be broadcast on Doordarshan’s regional channels from 20 August. Starting from the landing of Vasco-da-gama in 1498 the serial presents a rich saga of the heroes of this land.

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Anurag Thakur remarked that Doordarshan and All India Radio had done a commendable job of reviving the valiant stories of over 550 freedom fighters and enabling the acquaintance of the younger generations with these unsung heroes.

Speaking about the serial, the minister said, “It is aimed at reimagining the vision behind the idea of swaraj and tell the stories of the leaders that moulded that idea into a reality. The serial is a manifestation of our pride in these heroes from the past. With satisfaction in his expressions, the minister stated that intense research had gone into making the serial and information and documents have been collected from all the corners of the country to bring to life these stories from our freedom struggle.”

The Union Minister of State for I&B Dr L. Murugan, Secretary of I&B Apurva Chandra and Prasar Bharati CEO Mayank Agarwal were also present during the launch. Various members of parliament, senior officials of the ministry, Doordarshan and All India Radio news were present on the occasion.

  • DD, AIR go paperless with 100% adoption of e-Office

New Delhi: Use of technology has turned the operations at Prasar Bharati around. It’s no more business as usual, as in less than two years, 577 Centers and 22,348 employees of Doordarshan (DD) and All India Radio (AIR) have embraced e-Office operations. The initiative has helped the public broadcaster to cut down its expenditure on paper by almost 45 per cent in the last two years.

“Kudos to all 500+ field units of Prasar Bharti across DD and AIR as we cross a significant milestone with 100 per cent adoption of e-office. For an organisation which was 100 per cent paper-based till three years ago, it is a remarkable transformation,” tweeted Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati.

According to the public broadcaster, the IT enablement of routine office functions through e-Office on the Cloud came as a blessing during the pandemic with the flexibility to work remotely, keeping operational decision making going and reducing the need for unnecessary physical movement of files.

Prasar Bharti had introduced e-Office in August 2019 a year before the pandemic spread across the world. The idea was to make operations more efficient and paperless. Of total 577 Prasar Bharati centers across the country, 10 per cent adopted e-Office in 2019 (Aug – Dec), 74 per cent in 2020 and the remaining 16 per cent have joined by 18 June, it said in a recent statement.

The transformation has not only brought speed and transparency in the working of the organisation, but led to creation of more than 50,000 e-Files with the status of every file available online. Internally, concerned departments can trace their files, whether it is in movement or parked or closed.

“On an average, the complete process of clearing one physical file used to take almost a week. Through e-Office, this has been drastically reduced to 24 hours on an average, sometimes even a couple of hours,” said the public broadcaster. As a result, the figures on total volume of cleared files over almost the last two years and average number of files cleared every month during the same period have jumped significantly, the statement added.

Apart from reducing Carbon footprint, paperless work also enhanced the COVID safety during the pandemic through remote working, work from home, etc, thus reducing the chances of infections.

  • TV show Shree Ganesh returns to Doordarshan after 19 years

New Delhi: Mythological shows gained immense popularity among television viewers during the pandemic. After Ramayan’s dream run in 2020, another mythological show – Shree Ganesh is all set to return to the small screen this summer.

“The show gained a peak rating of 3.4 and maintained an average of 2.5 ratings in its original telecast on Sony on Sunday morning slot,” recalled the director of the show, Dheeraj Kumar. “People did not miss a single episode because of thorough research and great content and making. We are glad that viewers will get to see the show again on Doordarshan national network.”

JageshMukati played the lead role of Ganesh, Vishal Lalwani as child Ganesh, Sunil Sharma as Shiva, and Priyanka as Parvati in the show. Created by Creative Eye Ltd, the show is a Namah Shivay venture. It will also be re-telecast daily from Tuesday to Saturday at 9 am on Doordarshan.

In 2020, Ramayan went on to shatter all records when it came to the TRP game and led to a golden, albeit brief, dream run for the state-run Doordarshan channel on which it aired. It managed to beat the worldwide popular series Game Of Thrones to become the most-watched TV show. According to reports, 7.7 crore viewers watched Ramayan, breaking the record of GOT which had 1.9 crore people watching the show together in 2019.

In nostalgia trip, Tata Sky Seniors brings back hit DD show Swabhimaan

New Delhi: The 90s’ hit Doordarshan soap Swabhimaan directed by Mahesh Bhatt and Debaloy Dey has returned to the TV screen after a long gap of 25 years. The show is being exclusively aired on Tata Sky Seniors.

The iconic drama that ruled the afternoon primetime on television screens in the 1990s was the first TV serial to finish 500 episodes. Scripted by the columnist and novelist Shobha De and Vinod Ranganath, Swabhimaan brings back the story of succession rights and property entanglements that made waves with its original telecast in 1994.

It is supported by a stellar cast including Rohit Roy, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashutosh Rana, Achint Kaur, Tanaaz Currim, Rajeev Paul, Anju Mahendru, Kitu Gidwani, Deepak Parashar and many more. The show narrates the story of its protagonist, Svetlana, who finds herself in a battle where there are no real winners. Insecurity, suspicion, and fear threatens to erode her vivacious spirit as she struggles to come to terms with her position – that of a pampered mistress whose tycoon patron Keshav Malhotra dies leaving her to cope with the ugly aftermath of the tragedy.

Actor Rohit Roy said, “The audience has seen and appreciated me in several roles and characters over the years but every actor has a special show and character in his life that changes his life forever and for me, that was the character of Rishabh Malhotra in the show Swabhimaan. This iconic show returns on the TV screens, on Tata Sky Seniors, after 25 years and it is a dream come true not only for me but for a lot of people who have awaited the return of the show. Thank you so much for 25 years of love. It's time we give it back to you.”

The show is exclusively available on Tata Sky Seniors on channel no. 505 from 19 April, Monday to Friday at 12 pm and 9 pm, with a repeat telecast at 7:30 pm on Sundays.
