Kryptonic sound: JBL and Superman turn up the volume on fandom

MUMBAI: Who needs a cape when you’ve got Dolby Atmos? JBL is making super soundwaves this July, teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products India for a blockbuster collaboration celebrating the big-screen return of Superman James Gunn’s much-anticipated take on the Man of Steel, flying into theatres on July 11. The partnership launches a thumping 360-degree campaign, The Sound of Greatness, featuring JBL’s premium Live Series Headphones, True Wireless earbuds, and Soundbars all tuned to deliver audio worthy of Krypton.

Fans can step into Superman-themed Experience Zones across 2,000 retail outlets in India, where JBL’s soundbars powered by Dolby Atmos and MultiBeam tech elevate the trailer into a front-row seat for a cinematic sonic boom. These immersive setups are more than product demos, they’re audio adventures.

But the retail show isn’t just ear candy, it’s interactive. A customer engagement programme allows fans to earn points and win both premium JBL products and exclusive Superman merchandise. Meanwhile, a unified visual identity across offline and online channels ensures co-branded point-of-sale displays, merchandise, and campaign creatives reinforce the “Superman-meets-sound” buzz at every touchpoint.

The sonic superheroics spill onto social media with #TheSoundOfGreatness, inviting users to share why their favourite JBL product packs a punch. Whether it’s the bass, design, or overall vibe, select fans will win movie tickets to catch Superman in theatres surround sound included.

“JBL is synonymous with powerful audio that inspires through sound,” said Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products Group vice president for APAC Vikram Sharma. “We’re thrilled for fans to experience this high-octane crossover of two legendary brands.”

Harman India vice president of lifestyle Vikram Kher added, “Both JBL and Superman have decades-long legacies in creating joy, emotion, and cultural impact. This isn’t just marketing, it’s a movement in entertainment.”

The collaboration doesn’t just boost product visibility, it fuses pop culture, tech, and retail into one seamless super-experience. As DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures bring Superman back into orbit, JBL is proving that in the battle for greatness, sound is a superpower all its own.

So this July, whether you’re watching Clark Kent take flight or just vibing to your playlist JBL’s got your back (and your ears).

  • Blockbuster breakup as Warner Bros. Discovery plots a starry split

Blockbuster breakup as Warner Bros. Discovery plots a starry split

MUMBAI: When one studio door closes, another opens with a box-office bang. In a dramatic plot twist that rivals its biggest screen spectacles, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is pressing play on a two-part sequel splitting into two publicly traded companies to give each unit its moment in the spotlight. Announced today, the tax-free separation will see WBD carve out Streaming & Studios home to HBO, DC Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures and Television, and HBO Max from Global Networks, which includes CNN, TNT Sports, Discovery, and Discovery+, as well as key linear and digital assets across 200 countries and 68 languages.

David Zaslav, WBD’s current President and CEO, will lead Streaming & Studios, while Gunnar Wiedenfels, its CFO, will take charge of Global Networks. Both will retain their existing roles during the transition.

“This move gives us the sharper focus and agility needed to thrive in today’s fast-evolving media universe,” Zaslav said, promising a future of creative excellence and strategic flexibility. Wiedenfels added that the split will allow “each company to leverage its strengths and financial profiles,” paving the way for innovation and shareholder value.

Streaming & Studios will combine storytelling firepower and IP goldmines think Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Batman with global platform HBO Max, which currently operates in 77 markets and plans further expansion by 2026. WBD is aiming for 3 billion dollars in annual adjusted EBITDA from this division.

Global Networks, meanwhile, commands a massive reach of 1.1 billion viewers, with an eye on live content growth, international opportunities, and monetising digital assets like B/R and CNN’s new streaming play. The unit boasts industry-leading margins and strong free cash flow.

A crucial detail: Global Networks will retain up to 20 per cent stake in Streaming & Studios, planned to be monetised later for balance sheet de-leveraging.

To support the split, WBD has secured a 17.5 billion dollars bridge facility from J.P. Morgan, which it expects to refinance before separation. Tender offers and consent solicitations have also been launched to optimise its debt structure.

The full spin-off is targeted for mid-2026, pending board approvals, market conditions, and tax clearances from the IRS. J.P. Morgan and Evercore are advising, with Kirkland & Ellis as legal counsel.

WBD Chair Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr. framed the move as a win for shareholders: “This transaction is a great outcome, unlocking long-term value and strategic focus for two exceptional businesses.”

The end credits may still be a year away, but WBD’s bold reboot is already setting the stage for a media double feature like no other. One company to power global fandoms, another to rule the airwaves all from the studio that gave us a century of storytelling magic.

Mumbai: Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Hollywood industry veterans James Gunn and Peter Safran have been appointed to the new roles of DC Studios co-chairmen and CEOs, overseeing the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across film, TV, and animation under a single banner. Gunn and Safran will report to Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav. They will work closely with Warner Bros. Film Group co-chairpersons and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. The appointments will be effective on 1 November 2022.

In their new roles, Gunn and Safran will spearhead the development and execution of a long-term plan for the many properties licenced from DC Comics, focused on continuing the tradition of high-quality storytelling for the DC Universe across audio-visual media, while building a sustainable growth business out of the iconic franchise. In addition to their executive responsibilities, Gunn and Safran will develop, direct, and produce projects. In their new roles, they will also work collaboratively with Warner Bros. Television Group chairman Channing Dungey; HBO and HBO Max Content chairman & CEO Casey Bloys; US Networks Group chairman & chief content officer Kathleen Finch; Warner Bros. Discovery Consumer Products president Pam Lifford and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad.

Both Gunn and Safran have extensive experience with the superhero genre, having brought some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe’s most popular characters to life in hit films and series that include: Marvel’s blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, and DC’s highest grossing movie, Aquaman; Shazam!; The Suicide Squad; and the HBO Max original, live-action series Peacemaker.

Zaslav commented, “DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world, and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe. Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record of thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”

Gunn and Safran commented, “We’re honoured to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children. We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told. We’re especially enthusiastic about doing all of this with Mike, Pam, Casey, Channing, and the whole Warner Bros. Discovery team, and are grateful to David Zaslav, whose bold vision for the future of the franchise we share and which allows for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Most of all, we can’t wait to bring you all into the story of the DCU.”

De Luca and Abdy said, “We could not be more excited to have James Gunn and Peter Safran join the team and assume the leadership of the DC Universe. James is a brilliant filmmaker and storyteller and Peter is a tremendously successful and prolific producer and to have them both committing to work together to forge this new era for DC is a literal dream come true. We all share a very similar sensibility and passion for this universe, and the stars couldn’t have aligned any better. We can’t wait to get started, dig in, and collaborate with these unmatched creative minds.”

Throughout his decades-long career, writer/director/producer James Gunn has been responsible for films and series, including: Warner Bros. live-action movies, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2; a remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead; the horror comedy Slither; the dark superhero comedy Super; the hugely successful Marvel films Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; DC’s The Suicide Squad; and the spin-off series for HBO Max, Peacemaker. Safran’s production company, The Safran Company, recently re-upped its long-term production deal with Warner Bros. Discovery and has four theatrical releases scheduled for 2023, including The Nun 2, which is the sequel to the highest grossing title in the Conjuring universe, The Nun.
