    Switzerland's Davos is home to the world's biggest economic summit, the World Economic Forum, which sees a congregation of who's who in governments, corporate world and civil society to brainstorm on world affairs. They assemble to find viable solutions to problems and highlight potential ones that can have a wide impact. This edition of the Davos meeting will see the participation of over 3000 delegates. But first, know about the agenda for this year's meet.

    Davos is the annual meet of the World Economic Forum. Many parts of the world are experiencing winters, as is Davos, but the global dignitaries assembling for the WEF will be sharing a warm space together where they can share their ideas – they will be deliberating on making the world a better place to live in. This WEF meet is special also because this is the 50th annual meet. Some of the top leaders to be present during the meet will be US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, Finland's Prime Minister Sana Marin and Iraq's President Burham Saleh along with the state heads of Ireland, Brazil and Singapore. Apart from this, other leaders across the world would also participate in the event.

    India is planning a big show of strength in the upcoming World Economic Forum (WEF) annual summit to be held in Davos. The world's biggest economic summit will be held between 21-24 January. This will be the 50th summit of the WEF. The sixth-largest economy,

    India is also the fastest growing economy among large economies. Despite the global slowdown the world is looking at India with a lot of expectations.

    The theme for this year's meet is 'Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World' where the discussion on the global economy will take place. The global leadership will also deliberate on how to make the world a better and liveable place. There will be six different topics – economy, technology, society, geopolitics, and industry – where almost 650 speakers will put their thoughts before the delegates and the wider world. According to the World Economic Forum, a 'Davos Manifesto' could be made this year to redraw the economic goals of companies and governments.

    Emma Watson pushes gender equality initiative in Davos

    MUMBAI: Emma Watson, the Harry Potter star and goodwill ambassador for UN women, spoke about her plan to fight against deficiencies in gender equality and women’s empowerment.

     

    Speaking about gender equality she said, “We need all-country leadership, as well as that of hundreds of universities and corporations, to follow HeForShe’s IMPACT 10X10X10X so as to bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally.”

     

    Watson unveiled a new element of her “HeForShe” gender equality campaign before business leaders and international politicians at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland so that the issue gets global importance.

     

    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who was a participant on the panel with Watson, then emphasized her appeal to encourage men to advocate alongside women for gender equality.

    MUMBAI: The World Economic Forum returns to Davos for its annual gathering next week, and CNN International will be reporting live throughout this key event in the business calendar.

     
    With recovery from the 2008 financial crisis beginning to gather pace, this year’s event focuses on the role economics has to play in the reshaping of global society.

     

    From Monday January 20 to Friday January 24, CNN business correspondents Richard Quest, Nina dos Santos and John Defterios, alongside Fareed Zakaria, will deliver live daily coverage from the heart of the Swiss mountain town, which is transformed each year for the summit.

     

    With unique access to CEOs, financiers and world leaders, CNN will be posing tough questions on topics from youth unemployment to corporate responsibility, as well as asking whether the current model for global capitalism is fit for purpose.

    BBC World to cover specials on World Economic Forum

    MUMBAI: News channel BBC World has announced its programming schedule for the World Economic Forum in Davos. A team of BBC reporters and presenters will be providing live news updates, in depth interviews and a special debate from the high level meetings in Switzerland from 24 to 28 January 2007.

    BBC World’s business team, headed by Manisha Tank and Declan Curry, will be broadcasting live for World Business Report from 0530 to 2230 GMT on Wednesday 24, Thursday 25 and Friday 26 January. They will be providing an insight into the issues under discussion, as well as meeting delegates in attendance.

    They include Intel CEO Craig Barrett, Egypt PM Ahmed Nazif, FlickR co-founder Catarina Fake and MTV International’s Bill Roedy.

    There will also be a series of one-minute vignettes produced throughout the week showcasing senior global business leaders attending the meeting. BBC World news presenters Nik Gowing and Jonathan Charles will be live in discussion with the biggest global names in government and business on the news bulletins throughout the period. They will also be presenting Davos Report – twice-daily 15-minute news programmes offering in depth coverage and analysis from the annual meeting.

    The BBC’s weekly multimedia phone-in programme Have Your Say will be broadcasting a special programme from Davos which will be aired on 28 January 2007. Presented by Bridget Kendall, the programme will look at the growing threat to the world economy from risks such as climate change, terrorism, pandemics and oil prices, and discuss whether these are a consequence of inadequate action by governments and business. Viewers’ and listeners’ can put questions to the studio guests, enabling a conversation across continents and broadcast platforms.

    On 26 January 2007 BBC World will record The World Debate: Climate Change as part of the official agenda at this year’s meeting, chaired by main presenter Nik Gowing. This special debate will be broadcast on BBC World on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 January.

    The debate will ask a panel of key delegates about the sea change in public pressure for environmental sustainability, and why some leaders, and not others, are willing to take risks to implement radical climate change.

    The participants in the debate will include British Petroleum CEO Lord Browne, France Minister of Budget and State Reform Jean-François Copé, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers (KPCB) partner John Doerr and Siemens president and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.

    In the course of the discussion they will examine whether it is the politicians or the public forcing the urgency of the climate change debate. Other questions that will be debated will be, whether governments and political leaders are prepared to take the decisive measures to ensure trends are capped and reversed, and do governments have the skills and capacity to start doing what is needed?

    MUMBAI: The World Economic Forum has announced 47 Technology Pioneers for 2007.

    MobiTV, which works in the area of mobile and broadband television and music services, has been selected.

    The Technology Pioneers were nominated by venture capital and technology companies. The final selection from 225 nominees was made by a panel of leading technology experts appointed by the World Economic Forum. Technology Pioneers 2007 are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum to be held in Davos, Switzerland from 24-28 January 2007.

    MobiTV is responsible for leading the convergence of television and music content across the mobile and personal computing markets. The service has more than one million subscribers and offers TV and digital radio channels from labels, networks and cable providers. MobiTV is available in the US through AT&T, Sprint, Cingular, Alltel. In the UK it is available through 3UK and Orange; in Canada through Bell, Rogers and Telus and in Latin America through América Móvil.

    MUMBAI: News broadcaster CNN will once again dedicate its global resources to China for incisive debate, programming and insights next month. The network will have its second week-long Eye On China. A 20 member newsgathering team offers analysis, documenting the latest cultural, economic, and social developments in a country rapidly emerging as a pre-eminent global force.

    The week begins with CNN Connects – an hour long debate on The Price of Progress and continues with a blend of live reporting and features from Shanghai in the show CNN Today. Two editions of the talk show Talk Asia also go behind the headlines with China ‘s leading newsmakers.
