    Jennifer Lawrence to play Miracle Mop inventor in David O. Russell’s next

    MUMBAI: Having already worked together with David O. Russell on The Silver Linings Playbook and recently on American Hustle, Jennifer Lawrence might take up the role of Joy Mangano, the mother of three who became one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs with the invention of the self-wringing Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers.

     

    Mangano, eventually sold her company, Ingenious Designs, to the Home Shopping Network in a multimillion dollar deal but stayed on as the company president. Currently, she is one of the channel’s most successful presenters and is also known as the inventor of Forever Fragrant and Performance Platforms. Mangano started inventing at a young age, and continued to dream while simultaneously looking after her three children.

     

    Considered as a tale of woman empowerment, the project has a script by Annie Mumolo, who along with Kirsten Wiig was nominated for the Oscar for Bridesmaids and John Davis, John Fox and Ken Mok are the producers.

    MUMBAI: The 86th Academy Awards nominations were announced on the morning of 16 January in Beverly Hills, Calif. The nominations were led by the 3-D space odyssey Gravity and the con artist caper American Hustle, both with 10 nominations. The harrowing historical epic – 12 Years a Slave trailed closely with nine nominations.

     

    The three are among the nine films nominated for Best Picture. The other nominees are Captain Phillips, ‘Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street and Philomena.

     

    The best director nominees are David O. Russell for American Hustle, Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave, and Martin Scorsese for Paramount’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

     

    The Best Actor nominees include Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club and Christian Bale for American Hustle. The 77-year-old Dern is an Oscar nominee for the second time, 35 years after his nomination for Hal Ashby’s Coming Home

     

    The Best Actress nominees are Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep for August: Osage County. With her nomination, Streep pads her record for most acting nominations. This is her 18th nod, including three wins, the last for 2011’s The Iron Lady.

     

    Woody Allen scored his record 16th screenwriting nomination for Blue Jasmine. Also up for original screenplay is American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, Her and Nebraska. In the adapted screenplay category are Before Midnight, Captain Phillips, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street.

     

    Pixar, usually a mainstay in the Best Animation category, wasn’t in the list this time. Monsters University, however, ruled the segment with Frozen, The Wind Rises, Despicable Me 2, The Croods and Ernest & Celestine.

     

    The first original song finalist announced was the title song from a rookie film called Alone Yet Not Alone in the mix with U2, Pharrell Williams, Karen O and the traditional Disney entry.

    MUMBAI: The cast of David O. Russell’s fictional movie based on the 1970s Abscam scandal will be feted 4 January during an Awards Gala at the  Palm Springs International Film Festival.

     

    The Ensemble Performance Award celebrates the film’s cast, which includes Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., Michael Pena and Alessandro Nivola.

     

    “David O. Russell has created a viscerally powerful film,” said PSIFF chairman Harold Matzner. “American Hustle grabs you from the start and is populated by a group of eminently believable characters as brought to life by this brilliant cast.” The festival’s 25th edition runs January 3-13.

    David O Russell re-titles his next film

    MUMBAI: David O Russell, well known for his film Silver Linings Playbook has re-titled his next film as American Hustle, It was earlier titled American Bullshit.
     
    It is said that Russell is repeating the cast of his earlier films The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook for the corruption-drama. The cast of American Hustle includes Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Jack Huston among others.
     
    The film is based on a sting operation conducted by FBI in 70‘s that led to conviction of a senator and five members of US House of Representatives on charges of bribery.
     
    The film is being co-written by Eric Singer and Russell himself.

    The release date of the film is yet to be announced.

    ‘Argo’ gathers momentum with WGA win

    MUMBAI: ‘Argo‘ has solidified itself as the film to beat for the Best Picture Oscar. The Ben Affleck directed film has won the Writers Guild of America (WGA) award for best adapted screenplay.

    It beat out competition that included ‘Lincoln‘ which was written by Tony Kushner and ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ which was written and directed by David O Russell.

    The award for Best Original Screenplay went to Mark Boal who wrote ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘. It is about how America hunted Osama Bin Laden.

    Malik Bendjelloul won for best documentary for ‘Searching for Sugar Man‘. On the television side ‘Breaking Bad‘ won for television drama and comedian Louis C.K.‘s FX series, ‘Louie‘ won for best comedy series.

    The HBO comedy ‘Girls‘ won for best new series.

    History Channel‘s ‘Hatfields And McCoys‘ won for best original television long form writing and HBO‘s ‘Game Change‘ won for best adapted television long form.

    The IFC series ‘Portlandia‘ took the prize for comedy/variety series and ‘The 66th Annual Tony Awards‘ won for best comedy/variety special. ‘The Simpsons‘ won for TV animation.

    Films shot in India nominated for Golden Globe Awards

    MUMBAI: Two films that were shot in India have been nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globe Awards. The show is organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and takes place next month at the Beverly Hilton.

    ‘Life of Pi‘ directed by Ang Lee which was shot in Pondicherry was nominated for best picture drama among other nods. Its competition includes ‘Lincoln‘ which got the most number of nominations – seven. In the same category, getting a much needed boost was Quentin Tarantino‘s ‘Django Unchained‘ which got five nominations along with Ben Afflecks Argo. ‘Zero dark Thirty‘ a critics favourite also features in the best picture list. Missing from the list is ‘Beasts Of the Southern Wild‘ which was completely ignored.

    ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘ which was filmed in Rajasthan got a nomination for best picture comedy or musical. But the winner in that category is likely to be either ‘Silver Lining‘s Playbook‘ or the musical ‘Les Miserables‘. What is a surprise though is that neither of those two films‘ directors David O Russell and Tom Hooper were nominated. A surprise nomination for best picture comedy is ‘Salmon Fishing In The Yemen‘. Its two stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor have also been nominated. ‘Moonrise Kingdom has also been nominated for best picture comedy or musical. Paul Thomas AAnderson‘s The Master got a boost with its three stars getting nominated.

    Breaking Dawn grosses $ 340.9 mn in opening weekend

    MUMBAI: Summit Entertainment‘s Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 has topped the worldwide weekend box office with an opening of $340.9 million including $141.3 million domestically from 4,070 theaters and $199.6 million internationally from 61 markets.
    It has been found that the film has been wooing more males than any previous title in the series, who made up 21 per cent of those buying tickets. In terms of age, 50 per cent of the audience were of 25 years and older, it is understood.
    On the other hand, the latest James Bond flick Skyfall finished the weekend with a worldwide total of $669.2 million to become the top-grossing James Bond film of all time.
    The film, starring Daniel Craig, grossed a stellar $41.5 million in its second weekend domestically pushing its North American total to $161.3 million. Overseas, the film has earned $507.9 million for MGM, Eon Productions and Sony, who distribute the film overseas.
    Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln also made headlines as it released nationwide in may theatres. The historical drama took in a strong $21 million from 1,775 theaters for an average of $11,831. Last week, Lincoln, had roped in $22.4 million.
    The DreamWorks film, made in association with Participant Media and distributed by Disney domestically, came in No. 3, despite its modest screen count. Lincoln stars Daniel Day-Lewis as the iconic 16th president. Fox, that co-financed the film, is distributing the film internationally.
    David O. Russell‘s critically acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook and Joe Wright‘s Anna Karenina also opened last Friday. Both films did solid but not spectacular business.
    While Silver Linings, from The Weinstein Co., grossed $458,430 from 16 theatres in select cities, Focus Features‘ Anna Karenina grossed $315,395. The film already has earned $10.8 million overseas.
