Sanmarg CMD Vivek Gupta assumes INS presidency for 2025–26

MUMBAI: Vivek Gupta has turned the page, and this time, it’s for the entire Indian newspaper industry. The managing director and chief group editor of Kolkata-based Hindi daily Sanmarg has been elected president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) for 2025–26, taking over from MV Shreyams Kumar of Mathrubhumi.

The 86th annual general meeting, held on 25 September via video conferencing, also saw Karan Rajendra Darda of Lokmat elected deputy president, Tanmay Maheshwari of Amar Ujala as vice president, and Anant Nath of Grihshobhika as honorary treasurer. Mary Paul continues as the society’s secretary-general.

INS, the apex body for newspaper, magazine, and periodical publishers in India, has been a barometer of the industry’s pulse for decades. Shreyams Kumar, in his presidential address, praised the resilience of India’s newspaper ecosystem, particularly in a rapidly digitalising world.

Gupta, a former Rajya Sabha MP and current MLA from Jorasanko, expressed his humility and pride. “It is an honour to be among the few from Bengal in INS’s 86-year history to hold this prestigious position. This recognition belongs to the entire Sanmarg family, my colleagues, and well-wishers. I look forward to strengthening the newspaper industry, fostering innovation, and upholding credible journalism,” he said.

The INS executive committee for 2025–26 reads like a who’s who of Indian publishing, including industry stalwarts like S Balasubramanian Adityan (Daily Thanthi), Vijay Kumar Chopra (Punjab Kesari), Viveck Goenka (The Indian Express), Mahendra Mohan Gupta (Dainik Jagran), and Mohit Jain (Economic Times).

With India’s print industry still brimming with potential, Gupta’s leadership comes at a crucial time to balance tradition with modernity. As the sector navigates the hybrid world of print, digital, video, and social media, industry voices like INS will be pivotal in charting the future.

  • Oppo plays it smart with Gen Z in ‘Har Scene Ka Asli Partner’ blitz

Oppo plays it smart with Gen Z in ‘Har Scene Ka Asli Partner’ blitz

MUMBAI: When life gives Gen Z heartbreak, potholes, and 7 per cent battery anxiety, Oppo gives them the K13x and a campaign that quite literally meets them where they are. Launched in collaboration with Flipkart and led by SW Network, the ‘Har Scene Ka Asli Partner’ campaign turns everyday desi dilemmas into brand gold, making the Oppo K13x 5G a street-smart star.

Armed with military-grade durability, superfast charging, and a long-lasting battery, the K13x is clearly built for life’s curveballs. But instead of singing specs in a sterile studio, the campaign took to the streets and memes with cultural insight and cleverness in equal measure.

From quirky OOH billboards in college zones declaring “Bro, Kya Scene hai? vs Bro, Scene Ho Gya,” to live charging kiosks that saved the day (and your phone), every touchpoint served more than just copy, it offered context.

And in a monsoon masterstroke, SW Network turned India’s dreaded potholes into real-world testimonials for toughness. Painted road signs and standees reminded passersby: this phone is pothole-proof.

Print ads in Dainik Jagran and Navbharat Times added yet another punch, flipping familiar frustrations like slow charging and flimsy builds into moments of revelation. The core idea? “This wouldn’t happen if you had the Oppo K13x.”

SW Network co-founder Raghav Bagai explained, “Instead of talking about durability in a lab, we showed it where people actually feel the pain on the road. This campaign proves creativity can come from chaos.”

Meanwhile, digital got its own slice of the action. Meme content and skits by Gen Z creators flooded Instagram and Moj, racking up millions of impressions and cementing the K13x’s place in the cultural scrollscape.

What began as a smartphone launch has now become a scene-stealer of its own literally. In a cluttered phone market, Oppo and Flipkart have cracked the code: sell the story, not just the specs. And in a world that runs on low battery and high emotion, the K13x might just be the asli partner for every scene.

  • Vodafone, Idea pay Rs 72 bn to DoT for merger

Vodafone, Idea pay Rs 72 bn to DoT for merger

MUMBAI: Vodafone India and Idea Cellular have paid Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Rs 72 billion in cash that was the key condition for approving their merger. With the financial dues out of the way, the merger of Vodafone and Idea Cellular is likely to be approved in the next few days.

“Idea has submitted its compliance to the DoT’s conditional approval letter dated July 9 2018, for the merger of Vodafone India Ltd and Vodafone Mobile Services Ltd with Idea Cellular Ltd, including the payment of Rs 3,926.34 crore (in cash) and bank guarantee of Rs 3,322.44 crore. With this we hope to get final approval from DoT for the merger at the earliest,” said a spokesperson from Idea as quoted by Economic Times.

To avoid any kind of delay the two companies- Idea and Vodafone decided to pay the full amount demanded by the government. The two companies have started joint training sessions.

Vodafone Idea will be the country’s largest telecom operator, with a revenue market share of around 37.4 per cent and more than 438 million subscribers. Headquartered in UK, Vodafone had announced the merger of its India operations with Kumar Mangalam Birla-led Idea Cellular in March last year. The companies were hoping to complete the merger by the end of June but the process got delayed by a month.

The Vodafone – Idea merger is expected to make the country a three player universe, one of the biggest being Reliance Jio, which has captured a revenue market share of around 20 per cent in just 18 months of commercial operations. Recently, Bharti Airtel (India) CEO Gopal Vittal had said that the telecom sector was set to have just three big players holding similar market share.

If that’s the case, then Vodafone Idea could lose some market share as Airtel and Jio are expected to continue to exert pressure on margins.

The companies have earlier announced that Kumar Mangalam Birla will be at the helm as non-executive chairman while the Vodafone insider and current chief operating officer (India) Balesh Sharma will be CEO of the merged entity.
