Salman’s Sher Khan to release in Eid next year

MUMBAI: Not to give up his claim of a release during the time of Eid, Salman Khan has finalised that his brother Sohail Khan‘s upcoming film Sher Khan would release in Eid 2013.

A few days ago, there were reports that Akshay Kumar‘s Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 would be the only 2013 Eid release. This means that Salman Khan would lock horns with Akshay Kumar during the Muslim festive time next year.

Said director Sohail Khan, “I start shooting Sher Khan from January 2013 next and I start casting and finalising locations from next month. It‘s God‘s decree, After Tiger, Bhai is destined to play Sher. We‘re going ahead with the release of Sher Khan during Eid 2013.”

The project would be different from Dabangg and Ek Tha Tiger and will have more special effects than stunts. Said an insider that more than Salman‘s stunts there will be lots of special-effects in the film. And that‘s why Sher Khan would take longer than usual in the post-production.”

But Khan is very clear on this. Sher Khan would have to be ready for Eid, come what may,” the source added.

As per reports Angela Johnson and Priyanka Chopra are in talks for the film.

  • Govind Nihalani to make Ardh Satya 2

Govind Nihalani to make Ardh Satya 2

MUMBAI: Nearly 30 years after he made Ardh Satya, veteran filmmaker Govind Nihalani is all set to make a sequel of the cop drama.

“We are working on the sequel of Ardh Satya. Producer Manmohan Shetty has been really keen to make a sequel. We were toying with this idea since a long time. Finally we have decided to go ahead with it,” Nihalani said in a statement.

The movie followed the story of a policeman, played by Om Puri, struggling with the evils around him and with his own frailties.

It is said that the story will move ahead as the original story ended with cop (Om Puri) behind the bars. “So we explore what happens when he comes out of jail as an old man after serving his sentence for killing the goon Rama Shetty,” Nihalani added.

Ardh Satya, considered to be one of the best cop films made in India, had won many awards and it went on to become a landmark project in the history of cinema. The film had Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah and Sadashiv Amrapurkar.

“We thought of it to call ‘Ardh Satya 2‘. We are still working on the script and hopefully by the end of this year or early next year we will go on floors,” the 71-year-old said.

At a time when cop dramas like “Dabangg”, “Singham” are doing well at the box office, this seems to be the right time for the sequel.

Ask the filmmaker about the same and he says, “We are not cashing in on anything. The idea of a sequel was thought of long back. It‘s just that things have finalised now. The sequel will be very much different from the kind of cop dramas that we have seen recently.”

“‘Ardh Satya 2‘ will be a contemporary cop film not a remake of any South movie. Ours is a fresh story,” Nihalani said.

The makers have not yet finalised the star cast for the sequel, but they hope to retain veteran actor Om Puri.

“We would love to have Om Puri in the film. His character in the sequel will be of an older man. Apart from this, we have not thought of the main star cast yet,” Nihalani said.

  • Singham powers Star Gold to 221 GRPs

Singham powers Star Gold to 221 GRPs

MUMBAI: For Star India, the unconventional strategy of premiering a big-ticket film on its movie channel rather than on Star Plus seems to have worked.

Powered by the Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham, Star Gold has seen a 70- GRP (gross rating point) jump, aiding the channel to cross 200 points.

Star Gold closed the week ended 10 September with 221 GRPs, up from 151 GRPs in the trailing week.

Singham, which was premiered on 10 September, clocked 8.7 TVR, highest on any Hindi movie channel in the recent past and third highest after 3 Idiots (10.88 TVR on Sony Entertainment TV) and Dabangg (9.2 TVR on Colors).

“We are very happy with the viewers’ and advertisers’ response for the premiere of Singham. And we have many more movies in our bank to enhance viewing experience,” Star Gold senior vice-president Hemal Jhaveri said.

When compared to the screenings on Hindi movie channels, Singham’s roar is the loudest, followed by 3 idiots (6 TVR, second airing) and Robot (4.1 TVR), both on Max.

Star Gold had put all the marketing efforts behind creating a buzz around the world TV premiere of the movie.

The Hindi movie genre, fought at the top among Max, Zee Cinema and Star Gold, is marred with low stickiness.

“The ratings may help other channels to think of premiering films on movie channels, which ideally should be the case. The top four GECs alone show 20-25 movies collectively every week. This practice should stop,” the business head of a rival movie channel said.

Jhaveri believes that the players need to constantly change the game. “The rules are changing and there is no set formula. We are also experimenting. We were the first to air five movies a day and now have increased it to six. We have cut down on our advertising time and it is helping increasie the time spent on the channel,” he said.

  • Railways approach Salman Khan to be its brand Ambassador

Railways approach Salman Khan to be its brand Ambassador

MUMBAI: The Indian Railways has reportedly approached Salman Khan to be their brand ambassador.

It is said that the Railway offer comes from the belief that the Indian Railways is “used as a mode of transport by a very large number of population and as a star, Salman has a huge appeal among the masses. So it‘s a perfect brand fit.”

Khan’s films like Tere Naam, Wanted, Dabangg have important scenes in trains or railway platforms. In his latest film Bodyguard, the actor will be seen bashing up villains against the backdrop of the railway station.

If Khan accepts the railway offer, he‘ll be one of the many superstars endorsing national campaigns. Aamir Khan is the face of Indian tourism, Shah Rukh Khan endorses the Mumbai police website while Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of Gujarat.
