Khiladi 786 recovers from opening day lull

MUMBAI: Two indistinct films, Myoho and Cigarette Ki Tarah, released last Friday with limited engagement. Due to lack of audience support, the shows had to be cancelled and screenings replaced with other features at most places.

Khiladi 786, carrying forward the Akshay Kumar Khiladi brand, had a weak first day but made up over Saturday and Sunday and maintained well at single screens to end its first week at Rs 472 million. However, the long term position for the film is average at best.

Talaash sustained in its second week thanks to Aamir Khan fans who need to watch his film once. The film collected Rs 169 million standing up to mass appealing Khiladi 786 and taking its two-week total to Rs 849.6 million.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan collected Rs 4.2 million in its fourth week just about marking the end of its run. Its 31-day total collection stood at Rs 1.21 billion.

Son Of Sardar ran out of steam in its fourth week collecting a symbolic Rs 1.5 million and coming to the end of its run with a total of Rs 1.04 billion.

Dabangg 2, the most awaited film of the year, hits 21 December to cash in on the super success of Dabangg and the Christmas week holidays. With big names and film not living up to expectation in last couple of months, the public‘s enthusiasm for the film is in measured tones. However, the exhibitors at single screens as well as multiplexes are very hopeful of the film what with Salman Khan riding at the pinnacle at present! The film is getting lucrative terms in the form of minimum guarantees (MGs) and advances from the theatres.

  • Salman Khan’s Kick to roll mid-year

Salman Khan’s Kick to roll mid-year

MUMBAI: After hobnobbing for a while, Sajid Nadiadwala has announced that his Salman-Khan starrer actioner Kick will roll on time.

Kick is a remake of the 2009 Telugu film of the same name that starred Ravi Teja and Ileana. Salman Khan would reprise the role of a character who gets a ‘kick’ out of doing things differently and dangerously.

The film, directed by Shirish Kunder, will start rolling in the latter half of the year as Khan’s date diary is chockfull with projects like Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2 and Sher Khan. Sonakshi Sinha will play the female lead.

Confirming that Kick will finally roll, Kunder said, ““All rumours about Kick being postponed etc is bullshit. The film is definitely happening in the 2nd half of 2012. Release date will be announced by producer Sajid Nadiadwala.”

Incidentally, Kunder directed Salman Khan in his first outing, Jaaneman.

  • Hindi remake of Dookudu to star Salman Khan

Hindi remake of Dookudu to star Salman Khan

MUMBAI: If everything goes well, Mahesh Babu‘s Telugu film Dookudu is set to be remade in Hindi with Salman Khan in the lead.

Said script writer Kona Venkat, who worked on Ready in Telugu and Hindi and is also associated with Anees Bazmee‘s No Entry sequel and Sohail Khan‘s Sher Khan, “Sreenu, who directed Ready in Telugu, is keen to remake Dookudu in Hindi with Salman. In fact, the lead character‘s heroism suits Salman bhai perfectly. We won‘t need to make alterations for the Hindi version.”

The Telugu film has been doing excellent business all over earning till date Rs 300 million. While the Mahesh Babu film cost Rs 350 million to make, the budget set aside for the Hindi version has been pegged at Rs 600 million.

Interestingly, Dookudu was written keeping Khan in mind. But there is a hitch that needs to be solved. While the protagonist in the Telugu film is a cop, Khan doesn’t want to do a cop film till the Dabaang sequel. Airing his views Venkat said if the filmmakers of the Telugu remake decide to wait till Dabangg 2 is ready, then there should be no reason for Salman to decline the movie.

The filmmakers are awaiting Khan to see the film and green signal its making.
