  • Dance India Dance season 4: Goes beyond a television show

Dance India Dance season 4: Goes beyond a television show

MUMBAI: From jaw dropping performances to locking and popping, from dashing hip hop moves to “slo-mo” style, the biggest dance reality show – Dance India Dance season 4 is back with a bang. Come 26 October, it will celebrate the passion of dancing every Saturday-Sunday at 9 pm only at Zee TV. The channel has signed a deal with wechat and Maruti continues to be its title sponsors and eight associate sponsors have been roped in.

This season what is refreshing and new it’s the slogan, its time to “dance it out”! Sends out a strong message to its viewers that nothing is impossible to learn.. and dancing definitely not!
Speaking on the launch, Zeel content head Ajay Bhalwankar states: “DID brings in raw talent from each nook and corner of the country. You dont need to be a star but your talent and passion for dance will say it all.”

Produced by Essel Vision, the show will follow a format similar to the original season where 18 contestants are divided into three teams led by the masters. Episode after episode, the masters will groom and mentor their respective teams to face the dance ka Tashan. The show will be hosted by talented Jay Bhanushali and Grandmaster Mithun Da will continue to grace the platform with his characteristics wit, love and affection.

So what new the season has in store for the viewers? While the original judge trio Geeta Kapoor, Remo D’souza and Terence Lewis will remain an insuperable part of the DID family, the channel welcomes some young blood onto the panel of judges this season.

The new judges who has been roped in are Mudassar Khan, man who has choreographed in films like Bodyguard, Dabangg 2 and Ready. Second to the list, belonging to a family of choreographers, Shruti Merchant began her career assisting the choreography of films like All seasons of Dhoom, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and many more to her credits. Lastly, the third mentor started his career as an assistant to ace choreographer Farah Khan. Feroz khan is credited with smash hits like Maa da ladle and Johnny gaddaar.

The judges feel that they are going to face tough challenges going forward. They believe that competition is not only for contestants but for them as well.

So why the sudden change? Answers Zeel chief sales officer Ashish Sehgal: “Change is the sign of growth. We are proud of our choices for the fresh panel of mentors this season. At Zee, we always believe in making celebrities out of deserving talent. In my perspective freshness always brings newness. New judges will bring in new fans of dancing and that will also help to make the show better and also act as a differentiator. And they are very much capable of taking it to the the next level.”

Agreeing on the fact, Essel Vision Productions Ltd producer Nitin Keni says: “Each of them comes with an impressive body of work in the field of dance. Moreover, is is their passion for dance that has landed the, these coveted positions on our panel of judges. “

The channel is confident that the new judge trio will drive millions of enthusiasts across the country to Dance it Out.

The dancing fever has stepped in with auditions being conducted on a large scale in major 16 cities receiving an overwhelming response from the dance lovers. To top it all, it is just not going to be a television show. Reveals Akashi Chawla: “We are taking up parallel dance india dance online. Just to say Dance it Out does not make sense till the time you actually bring it out in a complete manner.”

Walking on the different lines, throughout the series, every week the masters will give out a theme and people all over can make a move of that particular theme and submit their videos. The best ones will be decided by the masters to go on-air. Adds Chawla: “the main objective is how do you give a platform to as many people possible in the most convenient manner. Everybody cannot be qualified in the auditions, so what else can you do for people who have passion to dance and great talent. So this was the strategy behind this.”

More to its marketing side, the channel is also concentrating on on-ground activations also. The channel is expanding its foot forward in ten cities, giving them a particular theme which is relevant for that city at that particular time. It will tell people to come and dance to get momentum for that theme. “The entire marketing strategy behind this is dance it out should not just be a slogan but a movement. Because it is no longer only a television show, so how do we exemplify in a brand that people actually connect it with. At Zee, we always try to give some message out of the other.”

So has it attracted the advertisers? Sehgal shoots confidently: “DID has been the darling of all advertisers. They were very excited when we told them about our plans on marketing and other activities. Because that gives them an opportunity to reach out to people at their homes. So through this way and platform, advertisers have another way. At the end of the day advertisers are looking to reach out to every consumers doors.”

We all are aware that there are barrage of shows happening across all the channels. DID occupying a 9 pm slot, will it affect the ratings of other famous shows on other GECs? Answers Chawla: “it is not for the first time that we have come against any biggest show. GEC is all about different channels launching different shows. After all you are fighting your battle in a competitive world. People who don’t like competition and people who don’t want to do things against competition should retire very soon. “

He further goes on to say that: “We love taking competition, we respect our competition and if the show is good and if the communication is clear, viewers will find time to watch different shows together. And they chose to watch the show which at that time they love the most. So all the best to all of us.”

With ad cap rule coming in, are reality shows affected for Zee? “In most of the reality shows you always kind of Adhere to ad cap, we have never over run inventory because they are high priced shows. Moreover, there are high stake sponsors involved, you cannot dilute inventory on these shows. So ad cap is not going to affect us in any manner as far as reality shows are concerned,” signs off Sehgal.

MUMBAI: Eros International Media‘s (Eros) net profit for the fiscal third quarter has declined 6 per cent to Rs 652 million from Rs 690.9 million in the same quarter last fiscal.

The company‘s total income for the quarter reduced 10 per cent to Rs 3.7 billion from Rs 4.11 billion in the corresponding quarter.
Direct cost for the quarter declined to Rs 2.59 billion from Rs 2.93 billion in the previous fiscal. Other expenses grew 36 per cent to Rs 188.7 from Rs 139 million.

The third quarter was powered by successful releases such as English Vinglish, Maatraan, Son of Sardaar, Thuppaki, Khiladi 786, and Dabangg 2 (overseas).

Son of Sardar received favourable reviews from audiences and reported a net box office collection of Rs 1.08 billion worldwide. Khiladi 786 also scored well at the box office reporting a net collection of Rs 770 million worldwide.

English Vinglish, a women-hero family entertainer, received unanimous thumbs up from critics as well as audiences. This film reported an impressive net box office collection of Rs 675 million worldwide.

Thuppaki raked in a net box office collection of Rs 1.8 billion in the domestic market and has become the fourth film to join the Rs 1 billion club in Tamil films. ‘Maatraan‘, another high profile release, was also well received and reported a net book office collection of Rs 900 million at domestic box office.

During the quarter under review, the company said it had entered into a number of satellite television licensing deals which resulted into valuable contribution to its revenues.

Eros International Media MD Sunil Lulla said, “Firstly it gives me great pleasure to declare an interim dividend at 15 per cent and thank all our shareholders who put their faith in us. Our slate was a well architected combination of modest budget high concept films as well as high profile big star cast films in Hindi and Tamil, which performed very well at the box office resulting in corresponding strong revenues through other channels of distribution like television and digital.

Eros, which partnered HBO to launch HBO Hits and HBO Defined, said that carriage deals for the two premium Hollywood and Bollywood movie channels are being worked out. The carriage deals and specific details of the launch will be announced separately in due course, it said.

  • Brand Fevicol benefited most from Dabangg 2 association, Ormax

MUMBAI: Fevicol leads the list of brand that tied up with Salman Khan‘s Dabangg 2, according to an independent study conducted by research agency Ormax Media.

Fevicol evidently benefited from the usage of the brand name in the popular song ‘Fevicol Se‘, featuring Kareena Kapoor with Salman Khan.

The study was conducted a week after the release of the film. As many as 12 brands had associated with Dabangg 2.

Following Fevicol on the list is Colgate Active Salt, which had run a contest called the ‘Colgate Active Salt Dabangg 2 Challenge‘ with Sonakshi Sinha.

Third on the list is Suzuki Hayate that is being endorsed by Khan himself. It had also run a multimedia contest with bikes as prizes.

The study noted that other brands like Thums Up, Gillette, Dixcy Scott and Fastrack could not milk the association because of which they did not register significant recall.

Meanwhile, despite having no association with the movie, Revital emerged as the brand with the strongest association with Khan. The consistent brand endorsement by Khan over the last few months ensured that it benefits from any ‘Salman Khan‘ event, including a film release like Dabangg 2.

Ormax Media CEO Shailesh Kapoor said, “Upto 15-20 brands tie up with big films, but only about 3-4 actually derive any real value out of the association. We had conducted a similar study when Ra.One released, and now plan to conduct such researches for big releases at regular intervals. Using such research, brands can benefit from learnings derived from associations of various kinds, and use these learnings as an input into their own film associations.”

  • Inkaar fizzles at box office

    Inkaar fizzles at box office

MUMBAI: Of the three movies released on Friday, the multiplexes had pegged their hopes on Inkaar. Sadly, the Sudhir Mishra-directed movie did not live up to the expectations. The film opened to weak response and failed to improve over the weekend and had Rs 52.5 million to show for its first three days.

The other two releases – Mumbai Mirror and Bandook failed to find audience.

Vishal Bhardwaj‘s Matru Ki Bijla Ka Mandola did not succeed in selling its hackneyed story which built a film around a character artiste leaving little for the lead pair to do. Having opened to a tepid response, it could not improve through its first week run and ended its first week with figures of Rs 313.5 million. The film showed a massive drop over its second weekend and will go down as the first notable flop of 2013.

Paresh Rawal and Rajeev Khandelwal starrer Table No 21 survived week two and added Rs 17.5 million for the week taking its total collection to Rs 112.7 million.

Salman Khan‘s Dabangg 2 collected Rs 27.5 million in its fourth week taking its total to Rs 1.45 billion. The number of screens and the opening week indicated a Rs 1.50 million business but the film may fall short of that mark by few million.

  • Salman Khan is best admired star on social media

Salman Khan is best admired star on social media

MUMBAI: Salman Khan beat Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan to become the most admired star on the social media.

Looks like with two back-to-back Rs 100 crore hits last year in Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 and the unprecedented success of Bigg Boss 6, Khan has once again proved that he‘s the undisputed king of Bollywood, box office and the idiot box.

The Dabangg actor also won an award for the best use of social media at this year‘s Zee Cine Awards. A research conducted by Asterii Analytics said, “We used sophisticated web analysis tools to scan millions of pages on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, blogs and online forums to quantify the total volume of buzz and conversations on Bollywood stars.

A shortlist of 30 possible candidates was developed in the first phase. We developed 25 parameters to rank the candidates on the total volume of buzz. Using this four-phased process, we came to a single score and the top three candidates were Salman, Shahrukh and Bachchan. And Salman Khan emerged as the winner with a consistently high margin.”

Salman has 7,516,597 fans on Facebook and 3,266,882 followers on Twitter. Not just that, the actor has fan club pages on Facebook and Twitter with over 757,057 and 577,919 followers respectively.

  • Matru ki Bjli ka Mandola fails to thunder at the box office

Matru ki Bjli ka Mandola fails to thunder at the box office

MUMBAI: Vishal Bharadwaj‘s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has belied expectations that it would be a blockbuster. The film also could not cash in on its solo release status following the postponement of Kamal Haasan‘s Vishwaroopam, which was slated to release the same day.

Opening the film for paid previews on 10 January, a day before its exhaustive release went against the film as the bad reports percolated fast leading to a relatively poor opening on Friday. The film could not pick up momentum even on Saturday and Sunday and went on to close its opening weekend with Rs 203 million, way short of being a chartbuster.

Table No 21 safely saw its way through in the first week and collected Rs 95.2 million, adding another Rs 11 million during the second weekend to take its ten-day total to Rs 106.2 million.

Dabangg 2 collected Rs 108 million for week three. The film‘s total collection now now stands at Rs 1.42 billion.

Khiladi 786 has added a symbolic Rs 3.5 million for its fifth week to collect a total of Rs 661.5 million.

  • A tepid box office week

    A tepid box office week

MUMBAI: The first Friday jinx seems to continue as three out of four new releases of the first Friday of 2013 had to be discontinued unceremoniously from many cinema halls.

Table No 21, thanks to Paresh Rawal in top billing, is the only one to survive as well as have some collection figures to show for itself. The film has managed to collect Rs 58 million during its first weekend. The collections in North have been badly affected due to severe cold conditions.

The three films withdrawn by the exhibitors are Rajdhani Express, Meri Shadi Karao and Dehraadun Diary for want of audience response.

Arbaaz Khan‘s sequel to Dabangg starring brother Salman Khan in the lead role of Chulbul Pandey, Dabangg 2 has just about exhausted its potential at the end of the second week as the collections showed a peak of Rs 80 million on Sunday and went down to Rs 20 million on Thursday, collecting Rs 315 million in all and taking its two-week total to Rs 1.31 billion.

Akshay Kumar and Asin‘s Khiladi 786 collected Rs 10.5 million in its fourth week. The movie‘s box-office net now stands at Rs 658 million.

Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerjee and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Talaash added Rs 7.5 million in its fifth week to take its total collections to Rs 945.6 million.

Four releases are lined up for Friday, 11 January. The exhibitors, especially multiplexes, expect Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola to bring the audiences back to cinemas after a couple of dull weeks. The release problems for Vishwaroopam with multiplexes still continue as of today because the producers have planned to release the film on the DTH platform first with which the multiplex owners are not in agreement. The other two releases are Gangoobai and Four Two Ka One.
