    Mumbai: WOW Skin Science/WOW Life Science, a D2C beauty and wellness brand, has appointed Richa Gupta as vice president of innovation and strategic projects for its India as well as international business.

    Richa will be in charge of new product launches, new brand development, as well as other strategic projects across beauty, health, and other categories.

    Richa was previously associated with Amazon India, where she led premium beauty, colour cosmetics, and content marketing verticals. Over the course of her 16-year career, she has worked with many consumers’ favourite brands such as Flipkart, Nykaa, Lifestyle, and Baccarose, leading a variety of charters across retail, category management, supply chain, and brand engagement.

    Mumbai: Clovia, a D2C fashion, lingerie, and personal care brand has recently partnered with Indian TV actress and model Nia Sharma to promote its ‘Big Lingerie Fest Sale,’ held between 20 to 31 August.

    On Instagram, Nia Sharma has 7.5 million fans. In her most recent Instagram reel, Nia features three insta-worthy looks from Clovia’s newest collections as part of the collaboration.

    Nia is seen grooving in Clovia’s newly launched collection of bralettes, nightwear and activewear, which made her sway in style & comfort.  

    The video was posted to Nia’s Instagram, where it has received 53 thousand likes and 5 lakh views to date.  

    Nia can be seen wearing a light blue lacy bralette with white denim jeans in the first outfit, a black button-up cropped shirt and short pair made of plush satin in the second look, and a graphic printed sports bra and tights combo in the third look.

    The video has also been shared by Clovia on its website and mobile application, as well as on its social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

    We plan to launch 97 new SKUs in makeup in the next quarter alone: Plum CEO Shankar Prasad

    Mumbai: India’s online beauty and personal care market has witnessed a boom due to a shift in consumers’ buying behaviour during the Covid-19 pandemic. The estimated number of online beauty shoppers by 2025 is expected to be over 122 million, with a $5.6 billion market opportunity for D2C brands in the beauty and personal care segment, according to Customer Perception Report 2021. This comes at a time when the space has also been seeing increased traction from investors.

    Earlier last week, the homegrown vegan beauty brand Plum made news when it raised $35 million in fresh capital led by A91 Partners. A fast-growing player in the D2C beauty space, Plum has been strengthening its omni-channel presence, building new categories in addition to its core skin care category- across channels and categories in skin, hair, body, men’s care, and now makeup. The fresh capital is expected to add further momentum to the new-age brand’s game plan.

    IndianTelevision.com spoke to the founder & CEO of Pureplay Skin Sciences, the parent company of Plum, Shankar Prasad to find out more about the D2C startup’s road map, post the foray into new categories and the fresh capital infusion. Prasad also elaborates on the brand’s plans to scale up this year by aiming for a larger share in the beauty market following its entry into the competitive make-up category.

    Aiming for a larger share in the Beauty Pie

    From a business perspective, category and channel expansion is the way forward for Plum. The brand plans to deploy its series C funding on “marketing, technology, and people,” says Prasad.

    Speaking about the new make up products range launched by the brand, Prasad emphasises, “The fact that product efficacy goes hand-in-hand with the goodness of non-toxicity is appreciated by our consumers,” adding that what worked for the brand is its ‘skin loving makeup proposition’: “which is to say that our makeup is lightweight, nourishing, and free from toxins, apart from being 100 per cent vegan and cruelty-free of course.”

    The brand plans to build on this momentum and replicate the success across a full-face makeup range in the coming year. “We plan to launch 97 new SKUs in the next quarter alone. To put things into perspective, our current SKU count is 36, and we plan to take this to 143 by the end of the next quarter across eyes, face, lips, and nails,” Prasad further adds.

    Turning disruption into an opportunity

    The pandemic was a period of changing consumer behavior, when offline sales had come to a grinding halt and online transactions were the go-to. There was an overall increase in exploration and awareness of brands and content consumption during the lockdowns. The beauty industry was one of the biggest beneficiaries of this shift in consumer behaviour.  This had a direct effect on our business, agrees Prasad. “An increasing number of customers, even those who preferred shopping offline, were now turning to online avenues of buying, which gave a much-needed boost to all D2C brands, including us.”

    The D2C platform grew 2.5 times over the last year in terms of business. “We got over a million visitors a month on our platforms, with close to 35 per cent repeat rate on a 12-month period.” So while the brand’s makeup line took a hit due to people curtailing their discretionary spends and shying away from buying non-essential items, an increased awareness about hygiene gave a boost to its skincare category, a major part of its portfolio.

    The startup saw an opportunity in the reduced advertising costs due to the uncertainty in the market on the media front. “We increased our advertising spends to acquire new customers on our D2C and e-commerce channels.”  The brand also took cues from the shifting search trends as people were actively looking for products with specific ingredients, and innovated to launch products such as Aloe Vera Gel and Vitamin C Serum.

    The brand recently launched an ad campaign for the products with the millennial actor Mithila Palkar as brand ambassador. Prasad is happy with the response the campaign has garnered, referring to Palkar as ‘a natural fit’ for the brand, as she reflects Plum’s values of being ‘honest and real.’

    The D2C brand considers as its primary TG the young women across metros and tier 1 & 2 cities, typically in the age group of 18-34. “With increasing internet penetration, there is greater awareness around new-age D2C brands, not only in the metros but also in tier 1 & 2 cities and consequently, they’re increasingly gaining in share. So, we certainly see a huge opportunity here,” affirms Prasad.

    Betting big on social commerce

    Social commerce has been gaining momentum in the D2C space by virtue of its ability to educate and reach newer consumers, especially in the hitherto unexplored territories of tier 2 & 3 cities.

    Amid the convenience of shopping in the comfort of their homes, the experience of shopping was lost, feels Prasad. “Social commerce solves this by simulating such an experience through social networking sites such as Instagram, Facebook, etc. Higher customer engagement, personalised offers, increased average order value, faster decision-making towards the purchase, and ease of purchase are some of the benefits. Hence, it is a win-win situation for both the consumer and the brand.” Also, due to the interactive nature of the activity, feedback about the product from both the influencer and customers is rich and real-time, enriching the overall experience of the consumer and providing valuable insights to the brand, he stresses.

    Keeping this in mind, the D2C platform has a watch and buy section on its website, where users can watch the product being used and then make their purchases. It also has plans to leverage Instagram for social commerce soon, adds Prasad.

    Shaping an omni-channel presence

    Being a digital-first brand since inception, all its spends are digital and it plans to ‘aggressively’ continue down that road. However, with retail expansion, the brand plans to supplement its primary digital media with other channels such as radio, TV, OOH, etc. “With an increasing offline presence in terms of retail outlets, our consumer touchpoints need to increase proportionately and be relevant to our TG. In accordance with this, we plan to leverage other media such as OOH, radio, TV, print, etc. in the coming year.

    In keeping with the preferences of the new-age digital consumer, the brand also plans to be present on OTT media soon, as this will play a major role in expanding its reach to the right kind of audience.

    “From our consumer lens perspective, we are also looking at new-age digital consumers who are primarily cord-cutters (those who have cancelled their subscriptions to multichannel television services available over cable or satellite), which brings OTT channels into the mix.”

    Marketing road map and expansion plans for 2022

    The D2C’s focus is to maximise its reach on leading social media and video platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook and a major chunk of its marketing expenditure would go on these digital reach-building channels, according to Prasad. “Our marketing spends are in the range of 25 per cent of overall sales and can even go up to 50 per cent at times.” The brand also has a robust influencer marketing program. “We have 1000+ influencers who we work with on a month-on-month basis as part of the affiliate program, which is called the ‘Plum List.’ Off late, we have been engaging with regional and vernacular influencers too, as these give us a very good return on investment.

    From a business perspective, the brand has been scaling rapidly in the offline space too. “We have three exclusive brand outlets in Mumbai and Chennai with plans to launch 50 in the next two years.” From a beauty industry lens, Prasad believes consumers these days are more aware of the products they use and also more conscious about the effect of their purchase on the environment. “This puts a spotlight on issues such as sustainability as brands will have to do more to live up to the consumer expectations,” he signs off.

    Mumbai: Homegrown beauty and personal care brand Plum on Thursday announced that it has signed actor Mithila Palkar as its first-ever brand ambassador. 

    Starting her acting career in 2014, Mithila is known for a wide variety of roles that she has portrayed in films and web series.  She is also a popular singer. “Being one of the most vivacious and spirited actresses, Mithila exemplifies the girl-next-door image and will appear in key Plum campaigns across digital media,” said the brand in a statement.

    “Plum is a youthful brand that resonates with the confident woman of today. So, onboarding a millennial youth icon like Mithila Palkar seemed to be a natural fit. She reflects Plum’s values of being honest and real,” stated Plum CEO and founder Shankar Prasad. “Our association with her is a step towards strengthening the connection with our customers and reaching out to millions of more women who will emotionally associate with our brand and love using our products.”

    One of the fastest growing BPC brands in the online space, Plum is available on e-commerce marketplaces such as Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa and Purplle and in over 250 towns and cities in India, through 900+ assisted retail outlets, and over 10,000 unassisted outlets, said the statement. The brand recently won the Best Vegan Cosmetics award at the PETA India’s Vegan Fashion Awards.

    An established name in the Indian beauty & personal care market, SUGAR Cosmetics was among the early movers into the D2C (direct-to-consumer) space as a digital-first cosmetic brand. Nurtured by Vineeta Singh, an IIT & IIM graduate who co-founded the beauty startup in the year 2015 along with her husband, the brand today boasts over two million app downloads on iOS and Android and 1.8 million-plus Instagram followers. Not only this, it has established retail touchpoints in over 35,000 outlets across 130+ cities and has raised $21 million in series C funding in early 2021.

    The persistent entrepreneur was third-time lucky after her first two start-ups did not take off. However, the second startup, Fab Bag, a subscription business that offered women an assortment of beauty products every month for a small fee- gave her enough data and insights to kickstart her third one. Singh realized that the makeup brands that were available—foreign or local—didn’t cater to Indian skin tones or the Indian way of life, and poured her academic learning and freshly-learned consumer insights into SUGAR. Unlike most digital-first brands, SUGAR was early to develop an omnichannel presence. The gamble paid off and today the seven-year-old startup has hit an annual run rate of Rs 500 crore as of November 2021, having closed FY21 at approximately Rs 130 crore revenue.

    The massive push to the digital economy that the pandemic offered also proved to be a boon and gave the brand a huge opportunity to connect directly with its consumers.  The multi-faceted serial entrepreneur who describes herself as “CEO @ SUGAR Cosmetics. Mom. Running, cycling, swimming person – in that order” believes that “women make the best all-rounders.”

    IndianTelevision’s Anupama Sajeet, caught up with Vineeta Singh- CEO & cofounder of SUGAR Cosmetics– for an exclusive chat on the key innovations the Beauty brand brought into its portfolio in the past year and its expansion plans in 2022. She also shares her thoughts on trends witnessed by the beauty industry last year while also delving upon the learnings that she carries into the new year.

    Edited excerpts:

    On key changes/innovations brought in 2021 by the brand

    Despite the difficulties that all brands faced during the second wave of the pandemic in 2021, SUGAR Cosmetics launched 30+ new products. Keeping the market scenarios in mind, we also extended our skincare category with the launch of a coffee and citrus-based skincare range. SUGAR Cosmetics also built conversational & educative content using strong videos and infographics, exploring experiential retail marketing tactics and deploying stronger content even on the brand-owned app.

    As we continued to grow stronger on building powerful content, we also ensured that we strengthened our content distribution channels from digital and OOH to TV. Our SUGAR x Taapsee campaign TV Commercial aired on prime TV channels in eight languages witnessed over 50 Million views.

    On the brand’s association with the non-fiction show ‘Shark Tank India’ on Sony

    I am very grateful to have been invited to ‘Shark Tank’ as one of the Sharks. As this wasn’t a kind of brand collaboration, my acceptance of this offer by ‘Shark Tank India’ was purely a personal interest to nurture the entrepreneurship boom in the country. It’s a sheer pleasure being a part of this iconic show that has helped create several multi-million-dollar companies across geographies, over the years, along with a unique viewing experience to the audience not only educating them but entertaining them at the same time.

    On leveraging influencer marketing to connect with consumers

    For SUGAR, influencer marketing has played a big part in creating online and offline popularity for the brand. Not only in the sense of getting our engagement levels high, but also the direct response from consumers through the sales conversions has seen a spike when we have engaged in influencer marketing strategies. In the near future, we plan to take our association to the next level, by creating an exclusive community of these mini brand ambassadors and rolling out an exclusive program for them.

    On expanding the brand’s current consumer demographic

    As a brand, we continue to stay laser-focused and loyal to the 18-to-25-year-old target group. However, with retail rapidly blitz-scaling to become a significant part of our business over the last three years, the brand has also attracted a slightly older target group of 25-to-34-year-olds. What’s common though in both audience sets is that they’re digital-savvy, more peer and influencer-led than celebrity-led and know what a good lipstick looks like. We are definitely foraying into Tier 2 – 3 cities and are already available in more than 500+ cities through just our retail channels.

    On major trends witnessed in the Beauty & Cosmetic industry in 2021 

    We are seeing a dominance of peer/influencer-review led purchases over celebrity-promoted ones. Traditional retail, of course, continues to dominate the lion’s share of colour cosmetics and beauty sales in India but with the democratisation of data and access to low-cost internet, there’s a massive Tier 2/Tier 3 city audience that’s waiting to consume beauty brands like never before. In terms of new product trends, apart from transfer-proof lipsticks and mask-proof makeup, hybrid products are a new rage. Such products have gained a surge in sales for SUGAR through our illuminating moisturizers, lip primers, lip balms, hydrating primers, and more.

    On key trends that might dominate the industry in 2022

    2022 will see further integration of tech in beauty. I definitely see a lot more experimentation happening on these lines as consumers and brands explore the blurred boundaries between the digital and real world. Also as the growing GenZs community joins in as early adopters of makeup – I see a lot of influence of their buying behavior skewed on brands that focus on sustainability, and who explore themes around realistic beauty and inclusivity. Adoption of an omnichannel approach and focus on conversational commerce will also gain popularity among a lot of brands.

    On brand USP amid tough competition from rising players in the D2C cosmetics space

    The three main USPs of the brand – highly coveted colours, the right pigments that compliment all skin tones, and makeup made with formulations that last long, has helped the brand to build a cult following in a short span of time. Our products are just more value for the price tag we command – it will be hard to find products that are more pigmented, longer-lasting, and more suited to the Indian skin tone.

    SUGAR, as a brand has always been more creator-led, than celebrity-led in a cluttered market, where brands spend more time talking about discounts than the power or beauty and cosmetics. Ensuring all SUGAR Cosmetics products are manufactured in regions across the globe that excel in providing high quality for that specific product – has also been a major contributor to maintaining quality. With a clutter-breaking persona, signature low-poly packaging and chart-topping products –SUGAR will continue to keep providing more value and better quality than any other competitor in our price range. We will also continue to be a squarely millennial-focused brand.

    On looking ahead: Goals & plans for 2022

    We will further strengthen our core pillars – distribution, product, content, and community. We aim to be in over one lakh stores in 2022 and make SUGAR one of India’s top three brands in the overall colour cosmetics category with a company turnover of more than Rs 500 crores. We currently employ more than 2000 women and we also aim to raise that number to 3000 so that the brand is truly built by women for women.

    On the personal learnings that she will take into the new year

    Covid-19 has changed the way the world behaves. For SUGAR, we came out stronger with so much gratitude in our hearts. Firstly, towards our customers who continued to support endlessly, secondly towards our retail, warehouse, and HQ employees who were nothing less than frontline workers. Another learning has been that no matter what challenge is thrown at us, agility matters. We realised that growth is not about how fast you get to it, but how well you sustain it once you have arrived. And, lastly, we learnt to not stop making bold and brave decisions, like we always did!
