    IPL Governing Council proposes 2 new teams; total 10 teams after CSK, RR ban lifts

    MUMBAI: A moment of respite and glory may come for Multi Screen Media (MSM) – the official broadcaster of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the league’s governing council floated a proposal of adding two new teams to replace the suspended Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) spot. 

     

    Additionally, the IPL governing council also proposed that after the two year ban was lifted from both the teams, the IPL will be a 10 team affair.

     

    “One suggestion is to have two new teams only for two years and replace them with CSK and RR in 2018 when they come back,” an IPL GC member told PTI today (27 August).

     

    “The second suggestion is to make it 10 teams from 2018 onwards once the two suspended franchises complete their sentence,” he added.

     

    The council’s two proposals will be put forward to the BCCI Working Committee on 28 August.

     

    MSM holds the broadcasting rights of IPL till 2018, which means that the last season of its IPL broadcasting tenure will be an elongated one with 10 teams. Trade media experts and economists believes that the MSM will make a profit from the revenue generated in the 2018 edition. If the proposal is accepted, it will be icing on the cake for MSM as 10 teams means more number of matches and subsequently a longer time span to monetise.

     

    The broadcaster raked in more than Rs 1000 crore in 2015 edition of the multi million dollar tourney. It may be recalled that MSM bagged the IPL broadcasting rights for a whopping $1 billion.

     

    Broadcasters, who are gearing up to bid for the IPL telecast rights when it comes up for grasp again, are making their permutations and combinations to bid for the tournament. It’s no rocket science that they will be following the developments closely.

     

    Now it remains to be seen whether CSK and RR players are relieved by their respective franchises and are allowed to participate in next edition of IPL.

    MUMBAI: In a landmark judgement, which has come as a major blow to the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Supreme Court appointed Justice Lodha Committee has suggested that two teams namely Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) be suspended for two years from playing in the cash-rich tourney.

     

    Moreover, Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of ex-BCCI chief and CSK owner N Srinivasan, and Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra have also been suspended for five years from involvement in any type of cricket matches with the BCCI. Additionally, Meiyappan and Kundra have been banned for life from any cricketing activity as they have violated the rules of IPL and cricket.

     

    “The purity of the game has been affected by the actions of India Cements and CSK. Fans have been cheated. India Cements did not take any action against Meiyappan. I propose to impose sanctions on India Cement’s franchise by suspending it from the league for two years. RR can’t shrink responsibility by saying Kundra acted in personal capacity. RR is also suspended for two years from IPL,” Justice Lodha said.

     

    Informing the media that Meiyappan suffered a loss of Rs 60 lakh in bets, Justice Lodha said that Meiyappan’s passion for the game was questionable and that he put the game into disrepute as a team official.

     

    “Three RR players were arrested for charges of fixing in 2013. Also a player was approached this year. This shows all is not well in RR. The purity of game must remain central to cricket,” he added.
     

    Speaking about the future of the two franchisees that have been suspended, Justice Lodha said that it was for the BCCI to decide whether CSK or RR will be bought by another franchise.

     

    Clarifying that the committee had not decided any criminal liability, Justice Lodha said that the committee had acted on behalf of BCCI. “The law will take its own course. No criminal liability has been decided by us,” he said.

     

    The Lodha Committee was appointed by a Supreme Court Bench on 22 January. Its verdict will be final and binding on the BCCI, the promoters and owners of the IPL.

     

    The IPL match fixing scandal came to light in May 2013 when the Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan for being involved in match fixing.

     

    Pertinent to note here is that the broadcasting rights of IPL, which currently vest with Multi Screen Media (MSM), are slated to come up for bidding in 2016-17. MSM had the rights to the T20 tourney for a period of nine years, which is up to 2017. Whether this landmark outcome of the 2013 match-fixing scandal will have an impact on the bidding price remains to be seen.

    MUMBAI: With 7.4 per cent TVR, Indian Premier League (IPL) finale played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered the highest viewership of the season.

     

    On the other hand, the qualifier match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and CSK emerged as the second most viewed match of the season with 5.6 per cent TVRs, while with 5.5 per cent TVR the first qualifier between CSK and MI grabbed the third slot.

     

    The eighth edition of the IPL witnessed a constant growth in each and every segment. While the money raised through advertisement was better than the previous edition, viewership and advertising also saw a significant growth this season.

     

    Television rating auditor, TAM analytics shows that IPL 8 was sampled by 192 million unique viewers, and the time spent by the viewers fetched a nine per cent growth with 46 minutes and 17 seconds in 2015 as compared to 42 minutes and 24 seconds of 2014.

     

    The average TVTs section saw 21 per cent growth while the TVRs saw 20 per cent growth as the tourney fetched 3.8 TVR this year compared to 2.9 TVRs  last year. Seventy one per cent of the All India Universe tuned to watch IPL 8 matches, which is almost identical to the seventh edition.

     

    Vodafone continued to be the most prominent brand on the basis of ad volumes purchased during live telecast. It should be noted that Vodafone occupied this spot in the last edition too. Amazon also successfully retained its berth at the second position, while other e-commerce ventures like PayTM and Snapdeal replaced Flipkart.com and Airtel Cellular Services at third and fourth place respectively. Vimal Pan Masala grabbed the fifth slot, which was occupied by Big Bazar in 2014.

    MUMBAI: The eighth edition of the on-going Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015 tournament has seen a 27 per cent jump in viewership from last year according to viewership measurement body TAM.

     

    Moreover, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) match versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on 11 May, 2015 is the most watched match so far with 5.3 per cent TVR followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) bout on 17 May, 2015.

     

    With a mere two per cent TVR, Delhi Daredevils vs Sunrisers Hyderabad is the least viewed match so far in IPL as per TAM.

     

    The data is released for the period of 7 – 25 April, 2015, with the analysis signifying audit measurements of live matches aired on Sony MAX, Sony Six, Sony Aath and Sony Kix.

     

    The first 24 matches of this season were sampled by 163 million unique viewers, while the time spent by viewers per match is 47 minutes and 41 seconds, which is 14 per cent more compared to the previous edition. The TVTs depicted a growth of 28 per cent while the matches garnered 3.9 per cent average TVR. Sixty per cent of the All India Universe tuned in to watch IPL as per TAM ratings.

    MUMBAI: The challenge was to seize the opportunity and uncork the creative genius in you. Nikita Deshpande, a budding film-maker from Mumbai, has done just that and has emerged as the first winner of Crash the Pepsi IPL campaign.

     

    Her film titled ‘Served’ beat over 400 films that were submitted by consumers from all over the country to become the first winner in the campaign. Deshpande’s film went on air on 12 April, 2015 as the official Pepsi television commercial during the match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Deshpande was awarded a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and has won seats for herself and her friends in the esteemed Pepsi VIP box for the match in Chennai.

     

    Speaking to Indiantelevision.com Deshpande says, “It was in March when we sat and decided: let’s go for it. We had a nice and long brainstorming session amongst 12 of us and we came with the idea. The video was shot with Canon 5d Mark II and was edited by Prashant Ramachadran, who was also associated with Badlapur. The entire group was from the film fraternity and that helped a smooth execution. Quality VFX and sound engineering was also exhibited, which made the production quality allusive. The total expenditure of the film was close to Rs 3500 only. We may make a few more ads for the same campaign and in future also I aspire to make more ad films for different brands. I also have dreams of making a feature film… it’s always Dil Mange More.”

     

     

    Ranbir Kapoor had earlier said, “Crash the Pepsi IPL is a first-of-its-kind campaign in India, and I am excited to team up with Pepsi in judging the entries for this creative challenge!     IPL Fantasy League user base crosses 10 lakh


    BENGALURU:  TenTenTen Digital Products (TTT) announced that its fantasy cricket game user base has nearly doubled to cross the 10 lakh mark. TTT says that this probably makes it the biggest cricket game in the world.

     

    The company informs that the biggest success of the IPL Fantasy League has been the high level of traffic it has witnessed. Since its launch in 2013, the Fantasy League website has had over 60 lakh unique visitors clocking in nearly 2.75 crore page views, with an average session spanning eight pages over 13 minutes. TTT says that the league also saw global participation with almost 18 per cent of visitors coming from 213 countries outside India. After India, the countries with most visits were the UK and the US, followed by the UAE and Pakistan.

     

     TTT managing director and CEO Ramesh Srivats says, “The challenge this year was to make the best game even better. We approached this at two levels. We enhanced the experience for serious players by adding features like Stealth Mode, Scheduled Changes, and even the ability to track league positions live. And for casual players, we made the game more enjoyable with All Stars, Facebook Leagues and fun features like Dishooms. The response has been overwhelming, and now we have already started thinking about what new stuff we can add next year.”

     

    Sharing additional data, the company claims that all three game modes saw increased participation. Over 4.5 lakh people played the Championship Mode, and 36 lakh Daily Challenge teams were created.  The new game mode – All Stars – where casual players could create a team by picking at least one player from each franchise saw nearly 3 lakh people participating in it.  TTT informs that the ability to create user leagues also drew heavy engagement, with users being able to face-off against friends and colleagues for bragging rights. Over 60,000 such leagues were created with a combined membership of nearly 4.5 lakh players this year.

     

     Users could also join fan leagues, to indicate the teams they were rooting for. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was at the top with over 1.17 lakh users. When it comes to the ‘most wanted’ players of this season, based on users’ choice across all 60 matches, Glen Maxwell topped the list followed by Virat Kohli, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina.

     

     The winners of the IPL Fantasy League were awarded the official team jersey signed by KKR players along with a special cricket bat and a hamper of IPL memorabilia. In addition to this, The Daily Challenge winners were also given tickets for the playoff matches.

    MUMBAI: There is good news for Indian cricket fans, who were left disheartened after the news hit that the first 20 matches of this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will kick-off in UAE.

     

    IPL is set to return to Indian shores on 2 May for the remaining 36 matches, including four play-offs, which will be played in the home-leg.

     

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after having successive discussions with the authorities at home, decided that the IPL can be played at home beginning from 2 May. The first leg of the IPL will be held in UAE from 16 to 30 April due to the general elections in India.

     

    In the home-leg, each franchise will play nine matches and five of the eight teams will be playing at least four matches in their home stadium.

     

    Chennai Super Kings will play two matches at Ranchi, while Kings XI Punjab will play two games at Cuttack. Rajasthan Royals will play four matches at Ahmedabad. There will be no matches on 1 May and 17 May.

     

    The schedule of the UAE leg has also been tweaked to suit the franchises. The evening match slated for 26 April in Abu Dhabi, between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will now be designated as a home match for the Knight Riders and the 28 April match in Dubai, between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and KXIP, will be designated as a home game for Kings team.

     

    “Following on from the launch of ticket sales for the UAE leg today (3 April), I am pleased that we are now able to confirm the dates for the rest of the season,” said BCCI-IPL interim president Sunil Gavaskar in a press statement.

     

    “It is great news that the fans back home in India will be able to watch a large part of the Pepsi IPL 2014. Given the various challenges and the logistical complexities, we have spent a considerable amount of time in crafting a balanced schedule,” he added.

     

    IPL governing council chairman Ranjib Biswal said, “We are delighted to have the season back in India at the start of May. Organising an event of this scale at multiple venues in two countries is an enormous organisational undertaking and we are very grateful to the Government of India, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police authorities in the various states for their support.”

     

    Hosting IPL involves elaborate planning on several fronts, logistics included and it is critical that there is surety on the availability of the match venues, for a tournament of this magnitude. The BCCI has tried to work with various franchises and stakeholders to get confirmations to host matches in the cities.

    The Rajasthan Royals have indicated to the BCCI that they are pleased to play their four home matches of the India leg of the 2014 season, at Ahmedabad, to avoid any uncertainty to their home matches. KXIP and CSK will be playing some of their home matches outside Mohali and Chennai respectively, due to non-availability of their home venue, for a large portion of May 2014.

    Looks like the IPL will continue to look at as many venues as possible to play the tournament in forthcoming seasons, and that’s a good sign for smaller states and regions to come to the forefront.

    MUMBAI: After all the action on day one of player auctions for season 7 of the Indian Premiere League (IPL), the day two began with the uncapped Indian cricketers going under the hammer for the first time.

     

    The day 2 will see players with base prices ranging between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 30 lakh being auctioned, with only Michael Klinger (batsman) and Ryan Ten Doeschate (all-rounder) at a base price of Rs 1 crore.

     

    The second day of auctions will also witness the unsold players from yesterday going under the hammer once again in the afternoon session. There are a few names from the unsold lot who would certainly give the franchises some exercise after lunch.

     

    On day one of auctions, nearly 90 odd players were sold to the eight franchises of IPL. The second day may not spring any surprises like on the first day but it will certainly be interesting to see how the franchises go about using their remaining resources to the fullest.

     

    At the time of writing this, Ryan Ten Doeschate was sold at his base price of Rs 1 crore to KKR and the uncapped Indian player to benefit the most was Rishi Dhawan who went to King’s XI Punjab for Rs 3 crore with a base price of Rs 20 lakh. Another Indian player, Kedar Jadhav was bagged for Rs 2 crore by Delhi Daredevils, which used its right to match card against Sun Risers Hyderabad’s bid.

    MUMBAI: It was a long and tiring first day of auctions of players for the Indian Premiere League (IPL) season 7. There was a lot of action prior to the lunch break but mostly fizzled out after it resumed for the afternoon session.

     

    Two of the highest bids for the day were made by Delhi Daredevils as they had the deepest pocket – the entire Rs 60 crore – having decided not to retain any of their players from the previous edition.

     

    Delhi Daredevils were the most aggressive making the day’s both the big strategic acquisitions.

     

    Firstly Delhi Daredevils waited for the hammer to come down on Kevin Pietersen and then reclaimed him from Chennai Super Kings at a high price of Rs 9 crore. This was the first ‘Joker Card’ that was used at the auction.

     

    The swords were drawn when Yuvraj’s name came under the hammer, after some frantic bidding and almost being sold in a state of chaos, the final fight was between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Banglore. Vijay Mallya had the final say with the highest bid of Rs 14 crore on day one and bag the Punjab boy to play alongside Virat Kohli.

     

    The other overseas player who was sold for a high price was Mitchel Johnson for Rs 6.5 crore to King’s XI Punjab, and Mumbai Indians declined to use its right to match card for the Aussie fast bowler.

     

    The biggest surprise of the day was Delhi Daredevil’s big bet on Dinesh Karthik at a whopping Rs 12.5 crore. The move would have certainly been made on the back of his stupendous showing in the 2013 season. Here again the Mumbai camp declined to use its right to match card.

     

    On day one, a lot of players who went under the hammer saw themselves moving to new teams. A lot of players still went unsold because of either dearth of funds or in anticipation of bagging bigger players on day two. Any which ways, the players who remained unsold today will again go under the hammer tomorrow.
