SC instructs BCCI to pay service tax for recording matches

MUMBAI: The apex court of India has directed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay service tax for recording cricket matches, citing the reason that it was a service provider. The decision came in the wake of the Supreme Court dismissing a plea seeking to challenge the levying of the service tax on it.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice AK Sikri posed the question. “If it (recording of match for live telecast) is not a service tax matter then what it can be,” as the BCCI counsel sought to circumvent the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) order upholding the levying of service tax.

The cricket board had moved to court after CESTAT had directed it to pay Rs 18 crore for the period from 2006 to 2010.The CESTAT order was passed on 28 August 2014.

The court further observed that whatever activity was undertaken by the BCCI in the country ‘is a service’. Declining the plea by the domestic cricket body, the court in its concluding statement noted that “recording is also an art as billions and billions of people are watching it”.
The BCCI asserted that it was just the recording of the match and was not a production activity.

123 players retained, 5 traded across teams for Pepsi IPL 2015 season

MUMBAI: A total of 123 cricketers including 79 Indians and 44 overseas players were retained by the franchises for the 2015 Pepsi Indian Premier season. Five Indian cricketers have been traded during the window for player trade this year.

The window for the franchises to extend the player contracts on existing terms for Pepsi IPL season closed on Dec 15, 2014.

Ranjib Biswal, Chairman IPL, commented: ‘Teams have the right, at their sole election, to extend player contracts for another season. This allows for teams to make any course corrections to their squads as a way to strengthen their team ahead of the next season. It is a way to balance the need for continuity whilst allowing for churn which is very important from the league’s perspective. The released players will have the option to put their names up for the player auction for the 2015 season’.

Teams have a total salary purse of Rs 63 crore for the 2015 season (5% increase over the 2014 season purse). The salaries of the players retained will be deducted from this amount.

  • Phillip Hughes funeral to take place on 3 December

Phillip Hughes funeral to take place on 3 December

MUMBAI: The Hughes family has confirmed funeral arrangements for their son Phillip. The funeral will take place at 2 pm on 3 December in the Hughes family’s home town of Macksville in northern New South Wales.

It will be held in the sports hall of Macksville High School where Phillip was educated. Given the limited capacity in the hall, overflow areas will be made available for guests to watch the service via vision screens set up on the school’s two ovals.

The service will be broadcast live by the Nine Network with provisions made for all other television networks. ABC Local Radio and the Fairfax Radio Network will also broadcast the service live around the country. It will also be streamed live on Cricket Australia’s website and app.

Qantas has scheduled two additional B737 services between Sydney and Coffs Harbour on Wednesday to assist people wishing to attend the funeral. Qantas has provided these services purely on a cost recovery basis. Additional services may be scheduled in coming days.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said, “We are grateful to the Australian community for the overwhelming show of support it has extended to the Hughes family in recent days. The offers of assistance for Wednesday’s service have been remarkable.”

“While we know that people from all around the nation want to pay their respects to Phillip, there will only be limited capacity in Macksville, so the work of our broadcasters will help ensure people around the country can follow the service on TV, radio and online.” he added.

Cricket Australia has asked that the privacy of the Hughes family and friends continue to be respected in the lead up to Wednesday’s funeral. The SCG Trust and Adelaide Oval will also show Phillip’s funeral service live on their big screens.

Cricket Australia has also announced that the first Commonwealth Bank Test match between Australia and India will not start on Thursday 4 December as scheduled. Details around the Test match are still to be determined.

Sutherland informed, “We appreciate the incredible understanding and support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It has been nothing short of outstanding during these difficult times. We just ask the cricket community for some patience as we work through a range of scenarios in full consultation with the players, the Indian Board, the ICC and our broadcasters.”

Ticket sales for the Test have been suspended. Fans have been asked to hold onto their tickets until further notice.

  • Missed call? It might be Facebook calling India

Missed call? It might be Facebook calling India

MUMBAI: Missed call: most of us have used it at some time or the other to connect with our friends when we are low on our mobile phone balance on our low end feature phones. Now Facebook is hoping to rake in the moolah courtesy this quirky habit amongst India’s light walleted mobile users.

It announced a new ad format based on the missed call habit this morning through a post by its emerging markets ad products specialist Kelly MacLean.

Describing it she writes:   “When a person sees an ad on Facebook they can place a “missed call” by clicking the ad from their mobile device. In the return call, the person will receive valuable content, such as music, cricket scores or celebrity messages, alongside a brand message from the advertiser — all without using airtime or data.”

Facebook says 66 per cent of the 100 million or so of its users in India access the social networking site on their low-end feature phones using 2G services. Despite India being its second largest market, it contributed only Rs 75 crore to its top line last year, according to online site Quartz.

“That’s a teeny-weeny fraction of its total global revenues of $5.49 billion (around Rs 33,000 crore),” says a media observer. “And it clearly needs to get India to generate more greenbacks.”

Facebook says it has been testing the missed call ad product in India for sometime now and it has generated some success. It expects to give it a further push in the next few months as it rolls it out to advertisers.

Among the advertisers which have used it is Garnier Men- a L’Oreal brand –  during the recently concluded cricket mega success, the IPL, from April to May 2014, says Facebook in  a case study it has published online.

As part of the campaign, photo ads were placed on News Feed, targeting men between15-35, asking them to click to call for a chance to meet players from the Rajasthan Royals and win match tickets or official merchandise.

“When someone clicked on the ad unit, a number was auto-populated in their phone dialer and a number was called. The call then dropped after a couple rings and the caller received an SMS with trivia questions to answer to enter the contest. The caller was also presented with a Flipkart link to purchase products,” Facebook says in the Garnier case study. It had partnered with Bengaluru based missed call services provider ZipDial for the promotion.

The social networking platform says the campaign saw Garnier achieve its goal of reaching 15 million of the target audience. 16 times more calls were generated from the Facebook missed call ad unit  than all other digital and print media combined, and its sales rose a claimed two and a half times year on year.

Garnier general manager Rupika Raman had this say about the test: “When we were approached by Facebook to become the first brand globally to take part in the click to missed call innovation, we were excited to try it out. It has reaped rich dividends and has been highly impactful.”

Facebook has partnered with India’s largest mobile phone service provider Airtel, and missed call platform provider ZipDial, as it begins rolling out the new ad unit in India.

The site says that it will soon start offering features such as life-stage targeting (new moms and dads, graduation moments) to advertisers, while it has already started offering geo-targeting options wherein advertisers can target people by state or even multiple states in India without having to list multiple cities.

And to get around the doubting Thomases about its efficacy as an ad medium it has partnered with Nielsen to serve polls to people on feature phones. “Our new measurement solution provides advertisers with greater tools to measure brand sentiment, purchase intent and ad recall for the first time on mobile as well as desktop,” Facebook has highlighted in the post.

The announcement of the new ad format has come at a time when Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is visiting India hobnobbing with government officials, and small and medium business owners.

  • No takers for India-Bangladesh tri series, yet

No takers for India-Bangladesh tri series, yet

MUMBAI: With just two days to go for the India –Bangladesh one-day international (ODI) series, the Bangladesh’s official television rights holder, Gazi TV, is yet to get an Indian broadcaster on board according to a report in a daily today.

The report further mentions that Gazi  TV has put a $ 1 million offer for the rights of the three-match ODI series which will be held on 15, 17 & 19 June. The offer was being customised for Star Sports but as of now it has not shown any interest and wants the price to be lowered.

The report quotes Gazi TV CFO Salahuddin Chowdhury saying that it has not received any confirmation from Star. “We don’t want to deprive the Indian fans of live action of the series, unless, something dramatic happens over the next two days, I cannot assure you that the matches will be telecast in India.”

With FIFA being aired on Sony Six, it is unlikely that the channel from the Multi Screen Media (MSM) kitty would be interested in telecasting the tri-series.

Also, Ten Sports and Neo Sports are currently occupied fighting the big bully Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in court.  It’s safe to assume that they will also not telecast the matches.

However, there could be  some good news for Gazi. India’s state owned broadcaster Doordarshan is open to a revenue-sharing deal.

The three matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur.
