    Cricket and other sports pirates get the boot as broadcasters flex their legal muscle

    MUMBAI: The International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy (Ibcap) has been rather busy playing digital sheriff, rounding up streaming rustlers and making pirates walk the legal plank. The coalition’s 2025 annual report, released at its Anaheim gathering  on 14 May, revealed a year of impressive swashbuckling against content thieves who’ve been helping themselves to premium programming without so much as a by-your-leave.

    The real crowd-pleaser was  Ibcap’s cricket crusade, where it showed that protecting live sports requires the reflexes of a wicket-keeper and the persistence of a tail-end batsman. During the 2024 Indian Premier League tournament, its analysts in India and America worked in real-time shifts, sending takedown notices faster than Jasprit Bumrah delivers yorkers. The result was spectacular: 6,723 streams disrupted over the tournament’s duration and more than 2.1 million Facebook Live views blocked worldwide. Its takedown rate on social media and mobile apps achieved a perfect 100 per cent—leaving pirates and would-be viewers equally frustrated.

    The highly popular cricket T20 World Cup saw similar success, with Ibcap’s laboratory removing 3,783 streams and disrupting over a million Facebook Live views globally. On set-top box and IPTV services, it knocked out 2,852 streams with a 77 per cent success rate, whilst web-based live streams suffered even more, with 5,940 removed at a 70 per cent clip. Social media and mobile apps once again proved no match for IBCAP’s digital fielding, maintaining that perfect 100 per cent takedown rate.

    Ibcap expanded it merry band of  crusaders with three notable additions: Japanese public broadcaster NHK, whose programming reaches 160 countries, joined the fray in June 2024, bringing protection for Japanese-language content into the fold. American video distribution heavyweight DirecTV followed suit in March 2025, broadening Ibcap’s reach into mainstream American programming. Most recently, Italy’s national broadcaster Rai signed up, dragging its popular channels Rai Uno and Rai Italia—home to variety shows, sports, and live Serie A football—under Ibcap’s protective umbrella.  With programming available across 174 countries on five continents, RAI’s addition proves that even the land of pasta and beautiful football isn’t immune to streaming skulduggery. Ibcap currently represents over 220 television channels from America, Europe, Brazil, the Middle East and South Asia. 

    The coalition hasn’t just been collecting members like Panini stickers. Its laboratory techies have developed a rather clever automated monitoring system that spots dodgy video-on-demand content on set-top boxes and IPTV services faster than you can say “buffering.” This proprietary digital bloodhound doesn’t just watch—it captures evidence, preserves it for legal proceedings, and fires off automated takedown notices to infringing services, content delivery networks, and hosting companies worldwide. The result? Illegal streams vanish quicker than a Test match in Perth. Ibcap is so pleased with this technological marvel that it’s considering offering the service to non-members and other organisations in the broader anti-piracy battle.

    Ibcap’s legal team has been throwing punches worth millions, building on its successful track record of making hosting providers pay for digital negligence. After pocketing a tidy $3m settlement from hosting provider Datacamp—a warning shot across the industry’s bow—it has trained its legal cannons on Virtual Systems and Innetra PC with lawsuits filed in October 2024 and May 2025 respectively.

    Virtual Systems’ behaviour was particularly brazen, operating what can only be described as a piracy paradise. The company allegedly ran a “DMCA ignored” policy—about as subtle as a brick through a window—advertising that “we ignore DMCA takedown notices” to potential customers. When Ibcap sent over 500 separate infringement notices, Virtual Systems treated them with all the respect of junk mail, allowing numerous pirate services to continue using its servers and network infrastructure to stream copyrighted content. The company’s reward for such cavalier attitudes? A lawsuit seeking over $41m in statutory damages plus a permanent injunction.

    Innetra PC proved equally troublesome, emerging as a major offender in Ibcap’s crosshairs after being identified as responsible for delivering approximately 15 per cent of unauthorised Ibcap member streams on set-top box and IPTV services during the first quarter of 2025. Its comeuppance: a lawsuit demanding more than $25m in statutory damages and, like Virtual Systems, a permanent injunction to stop hosting infringing content.

    Perhaps most satisfying was the legal thrashing handed to the operators of Lemo TV and Kemo IPTV in April 2025. These streaming scallywags had been particularly audacious, continuing to broadcast Ibcap protected content despite receiving approximately 100 infringement notices—roughly one for every boundary in a decent innings. During the first quarter of 2025 alone, the service accounted for almost 30 per cent of all unauthorised streams detected on set-top box and IPTV services monitored by Ibcap’s laboratory.

    The service’s persistence in piracy proved costly. The lawsuit seeks statutory damages exceeding $25m, plus profits from potentially thousands of unregistered works that were illegally distributed. But the legal punishment doesn’t stop at financial penalties—Ibcap wants a permanent injunction to shut down the operation entirely, an order forcing the transfer of domain names used by the service, and recovery of reasonable legal fees and costs. It’s the equivalent of not just getting bowled out, but having your stumps scattered across three counties.

    The message is crystal clear: content pirates may think they’re sailing in international waters, but Ibcap’s legal navy is patrolling every digital sea lane with an arsenal that would make admiral Nelson proud. With automated monitoring systems scanning the digital horizon, a growing fleet of broadcaster allies from five continents, and a track record of multi-million-dollar settlements, the coalition is proving that in the world of content protection, crime doesn’t pay—especially when it’s streaming someone else’s cricket match, Serie A fixture, or prime-time drama without permission.

    MUMBAI: JioStar – the official broadcast and streaming partner of the Tata IPL 2025 – has thrown its weight behind the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to suspend the league indefinitely, declaring that national interest must take precedence over all else.

    In a statement issued to stakeholders and the media, the company expressed unwavering support for the government, the armed forces, and civilians impacted by the ongoing situation. JioStar has promised to collaborate with the BCCI to ensure the tournament resumes at an Tata IPL 2025 appropriate time.

    “We, at JioStar, wholeheartedly support the BCCI’s decision to suspend Tata IPL 2025 and stand firmly committed to prioritise national interest over all other considerations,” the company stated.

    JioStar further pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to guarantee a smooth transition, ensuring that everyone involved in the tournament’s broadcast and operations returns home safely.

    MUMBAI: The news could not have come at a worse time for JioStar.  Just as the Indian Premier League 2025 – the IPL – world’s richest cricket league was beginning to gather momentum during the playoffs and attracting a slew of new advertisers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a short while ago announced that it was calling it off – indefinitely. This is courtesy the conflict between India and Pakistan which has escalated and attained war like proportions.

    The BCCI members had long consultations this morning before finally taking the decision to indefinitely suspend it. Most of the cricketers playing in the league had expressed their reservations about their safety in the midst of the Indo-Pak tensions.

    JioStar leased a statement regarding the goverment’s decision stating, We, at JioStar, whole heartedly support the BCCI’s decision to suspend TATA IPL 2025 and stand firmly committed to prioritize national interest over all other considerations. At this time, we must stand united with our country, support the government and our armed forces, and extend solidarity & support to the civilians affected. We will work with the BCCI to bring back the tournament at an appropriate time. JioStar will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the transition is managed in a seamless manner and everyone involved in the tournament broadcast returns home safely.

    It may be recalled that last evening’s match between between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on was cancelled after 10.1 overs of play in the first half following air raid alerts in neighbouring Indian cities of Jammu and Pathankot.

    How this will impact and how BCCI will work with the official broadcaster JioStar and streaming partner JioHotstar will become clearer in the coming days. Right now the focus is on the developing conflict between the two nations.

    The top five categories — e-commerce gaming, pan masala, aerated soft drinks, digital wallets, and biscuits — have steamrolled the competition, grabbing nearly 60 per cent of the ad pie. In a cricket-mad nation, snack cravings and fantasy sports dreams are, clearly, recession-proof.

    Leading the advertising scoreboard are heavy-hitters like Dream11, Parle Products, Sporta Technologies, KP Pan Foods, and PepsiCo India. Dream11, in particular, seems to be playing Test cricket while others are stuck in a T20 mindset — blanketing screens with a relentless media barrage.

    But it’s not just the usual suspects jostling for screen time.

    IPL 18 has welcomed a new squad of ambitious rookies: online payment apps, solar energy brands, smartwatches, and a fresh wave of wearable tech firms, all eager to cash in on the cricketing carnival. The brand line-up today mirrors a new India — digital-first, experimental, and willing to go big.

    The scale-up is staggering:
    * TV ad volumes during IPL 18 are over three times higher than in the pre-IPL season.
    * New categories have grown by over 25 per cent year-on-year.

    MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League’s 2025 season has kicked off with a veritable feast for advertisers, showing remarkably robust growth in the tournament’s commercial appeal. The first 31 matches witnessed an 8 per cent jump in advertising volumes compared to the same period last year, according to the latest report from TAM Sports.

    The lucrative cricketing carnival has attracted 16 per cent more advertisers than in 2024, with the total count rising from 65+ to 75+. Even more impressive is the 23 per cent surge in brand presence, leaping from 110+ to 140+ brands jostling for eyeballs during the matches.

    Gaming platforms have bowled over the competition, with e-commerce gaming emerging as the top category, commanding an 18 per cent share of advertising volumes—nearly double its 9 per cent slice from last year. Food products claimed the second spot with 11 per cent, while mouth fresheners, last year’s champion, slipped to third place with 10 per cent of the advertising pie.

    Parle Products continues its dominant innings at the crease, leading the advertiser rankings with an 11 per cent share. Dream11.com’s parent company, Sporta Technologies, came in a close second with 10 per cent, while My11circle muscled its way into third place with 6 per cent of total ad volumes.

    The advertising landscape has witnessed notable churn, with 23 new categories entering the fray while an equal number have been clean bowled out of this year’s tournament. Among the 96 debutant brands, Parle Platina Hide & Seek and Rajshree Silver Coated Elaichi emerged as the top newcomers.

    Food and beverage brands continue to have a ravenous appetite for cricket eyeballs, accounting for three of the top five advertising categories. Meanwhile, traditional categories like biscuits, properties/real estates, and chocolates have been relegated to the pavilion this season.

    The tournament’s broad reach across both national and regional language channels has created distinct advertising patterns.     With 28 channels broadcasting IPL matches this season—up from 24 last year—advertisers clearly believe the tournament remains cricket’s most lucrative commercial pitch.

    Agilitas was founded in 2023 by Abhishek Ganguly, Puma India’s former managing director. The brand has already made waves, securing long-term rights for Italian sportswear giant Lotto in India, Australia, and South Africa. Now, with Kohli on board, Agilitas is gearing up for a serious innings in the global sportswear arena.

    Kohli’s split from Puma marks the end of a landmark Rs 110 crore deal that revolutionised Indian sports marketing. The partnership saw him lead multiple campaigns and launch the popular One8 line, a crucial driver in Puma’s rise in the Indian market.

    Puma acknowledged the departure, thanking Kohli for an “outstanding journey filled with memorable campaigns and collaborations.” The brand vowed to continue investing in the next generation of athletes.

    Meanwhile, Kohli remains focused on both his new business venture and his cricketing form. The RCB stalwart has racked up 180 runs in his last five IPL innings and is set to face Rajasthan Royals on 13 April.

While ecom-gaming and cellular phones maintain a strong presence, the food and beverage sector is making a significant push, with two of the top five categories originating from it.

    MUMBAI: The Indian sports sponsorship scene has flexed its muscles, punching through the Rs. 16,633 crore barrier, according to GroupM ESP’s latest Sporting Nation report. That’s a six per cent year-on-year growth, propelling the overall market towards a cool $2 billion. Since 2008, the sector’s seen a sevenfold surge, a proper blinder of a result.

    While cricket remains the undisputed captain, the rise of non-cricket sports is giving it a run for its money. Athlete endorsements have hit an all-time high, leaping 32 per cent to Rs. 1,224 crore. Forget just sixes and wickets, we’re talking about the likes of Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu, who’ve spearheaded a 46 per cent hike in non-cricket endorsements. The Olympic buzz has clearly got everyone’s knickers in a twist, boosting emerging sports sponsorships by 19 per cent. Fancy a jog? Distance running alone accounts for a quarter of that, showing India’s keen to get its trainers on.

    GroupM South Asia  chief operating officer Ashwin Padmanabhan reckons industry is  continuing its remarkable trajectory, but the industry is e witnessing a dynamic shift driven by both legacy and emerging sports. “Cricket’s still the cornerstone, but the non-cricket athletes, the Olympic buzz, and the digital revolution are reshaping the landscape. With brands increasingly recognising the power of sports as a platform for deeper consumer engagement, the momentum is undeniable. This is not just growth in numbers—it’s the
    evolution of an industry that is more diverse, digital, and driven by innovation than ever before,” he said.

    Indian sports economy has firmly established itself as a high-growth sector, surging 7x since 2008 to near the $2 billion mark. While traditional powerhouses continue to drive momentum, the real story lies in the rise of emerging sports, athlete-driven brand value, and the digital explosion, which alone saw a 25 per cent  jump in media spends. The record-breaking Rs. 1,224 crore  in athlete endorsements signals a shift—brands are betting big on individual icons across sports. As we enter a new era of engagement, innovation will be key in unlocking the next wave of commercial success in Indian sport.”

    Despite a slight wobble in sponsorship growth this year, thanks to IPL and ICC rights resets, the market’s showing its staying power. With digital engagement going through the roof and audience preferences swerving faster than a fast bowler’s out swinger, the Indian sports scene is poised for even more fireworks.
