  • How short video apps took media brands to masses in 2021

How short video apps took media brands to masses in 2021

Mumbai: “It came, it saw, it conquered…” the statement perfectly describes the meteoric rise of ByteDance-owned short video app TikTok in India. Such was the momentum created by it that by December 2020 – that just six months after TikTok was banned – the market was flooded by its Indian counterparts with Dailyhunt’s Josh leading the pack. Roposo, MXTakaTak, Chingari, Moj and others followed.

According to consulting firm RedSeer by April-June this year, the short-form video user base at 40-45 million creators hailing mostly from smaller towns and cities, was back to nearly 100 per cent of pre-TikTok ban, with strong loyalty to Indian apps. Monthly average users were up 1.2 times, while time spent on the apps was about 0.4 times higher.

2021 was the time for short video app owners to tap into the goldmines that they were now sitting on. For players in the ecosystem partnerships and monetisation emerged as the key theme for the year, as all kinds of media brands like TV channels, OTT platforms and music labels latched on to the opportunity. Short-video apps were their window to ‘Bharat’.

“Short video and entertainment platforms have seen one of the highest increases in monthly active users (MAUs) and the engagement time spent during the second wave of Covid-19. The changes in people’s emotions, platforms and emerging trends led to this growth.

With content offerings in 14 Indian languages, Josh boasts of 124 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs) and 60 million Daily Active Users (DAUs) coming from across 19000 pin codes in the country.

Commenting on how the country’s dynamic digital landscape driven by ‘Bharat’ has affected partnerships and collaborations for him, Josh head of creator and content ecosystem Sunder Venketraman, says, “Tier-2 and tier-3 cities have widely been considered a niche market in terms of content, despite holding a majority of the country’s actual population. While initially it was the telcos, FMCG and handset manufacturers that targeted these markets, there has been growing interest from every major category from auto, retail, e-commerce, OTT and financial services.”

With regard to media brands in particular, he adds, “At Josh we operate at the intersection of video and vernacular which presents a unique opportunity for media brands to reach out to a vast majority of the country’s audiences, given the growing popularity of vernacular content.”

To promote season 15 of the popular show ‘Bigg Boss’ Josh collaborated with Voot in producing a rap song and a hashtag #BIGGBOSSS15ASLIFAN, resulting in 250 million + video views, 10,000 + UGC videos and 17 million + likes. Zee Bangla’s ‘Uma’ was promoted with a challenge around the show’s main theme Cricket. Female users on Josh were asked to balance a ball on the Cricket bat for 10 seconds. The collaboration resulted in over eight million + views, 140 + UGC videos and 630,000 + likes.

The app also collaborated with Shemaroo, SVF Entertainment (Bengali film, television and OTT content production house), Pitaara TV (Punjabi movies channel, and recently launched OTT platform Chaupal), ALTBalaji (‘Cartel’), and ten leading music labels including Saregama. “This is revealing of how short-video apps are now a viable route for music labels to reach new audiences, and how new and upcoming artists can use platforms such as ours to reach out to niche audiences organically,” notes Venketraman.

ALTBalaji’s senior vice-president – marketing and revenue Divya Dixit believes that such collaborations open up multiple gateways to reach out to the youth and the masses with the right message. “Short video and entertainment platforms saw one of the highest increases in MAUs, and ‘time spent’ during the second wave of Covid-19. Their tremendous growth in terms of number of content creators, brands, as well as ads on these apps, was led by changes in people’s emotions, choice of media platforms and other emerging trends,” she observes.

A large part of ALTBalaji’s organic reach comes from short-video apps. The platform has carried out various promotional activities with the likes of Josh (‘Cartel’ and ‘Girgit’), ‘Chingari, Roposo, Moj (‘Pavitra Rishta) and Firework.

Sharing the impact of these campaigns, Dixit states, “Our collaboration with MOJ for ‘Pavitra Rishta’ and Josh for shows like ‘Cartel’ and ‘Girgit’ helped in generating eyeballs for various show assets like songs, trailers, and dialogues that were amplified by the creators on their respective platforms via UGC push. It gave us reach in the hinterland markets, thus indirectly impacting the engagement numbers.”

The Q COO Krishna Menon notes that while the pandemic made entertainment a bit of a challenge for most broadcasting houses and digital production houses as well, short video apps proved to be a boon for creators. “These creators are mostly the GenZ/millennials. Not only have they taken engagement on the platform higher, but are today setting day-to-day trends for people. Because The Q’s basic DNA is to work with the best of digital creators, short video platforms become like a strategic alliance for us as a source of content.”

A recent example was the channel’s partnership with Chingari wherein it carried out digital auditions for its recently launched show ‘Jurm Ka Chehra’. Close to a million entries were received through the collaboration.  The Q runs multiple VOD platforms on Snap where the best of linear programming is cut into VOD episodes and made available for viewing. Some of the prominent platforms include ‘Daraawni Kahaaniyaan’ which has grown from few thousands to one million subscribers in the last year itself, ‘Khaao Gali’ and ‘Comedy Centre’.

Elaborating on the significance of short video format for the Q, Menon shares, “Most broadcasting houses have their own digital storefronts. We haven’t created one for us because we want to go with those in the market. They are an additional source of revenue for us, and of entertainment for people.”

Chingari started its collaboration journey with promoting all OTT content and moved on to launching exclusive trailers on the app, promoting web series/ music albums to now launching its own IPs.

The app’s co-founder & COO, Deepak Salvi says, “We saw a huge surge in the time spent and engagement by users on the app during the pandemic and this is exactly what is needed by brands to promote themselves and their content. Knowing that a large population of the audience that belongs to their TG is spending time on Chingari, media companies like TV channels, OTT platforms, music labels and even production houses started associating with us for the promotion of their latest content.”

Some of Chingari’s latest brand associations include Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd, Alt Balaji, Hoichoi, and Radio City.

Due to the growing accessibility and affordability of the internet and the digital boost experienced in 2020-21, people in the tier 2 and 3 towns are now not only consuming content but are also very actively creating it. Salvi shares, “One of the main focus points for Chingari therefore is to create a very strong network of creators and consumers in the tier 2 and 3 cities. We are trying to reach out to the remotest areas of India by conducting events, partnering with regional content creators, OTT platforms, and music labels.”

  • Mitron turns one: Vernacular, monetisation to be key focus areas

Mitron turns one: Vernacular, monetisation to be key focus areas

KOLKATA: In last June, a number of short video platforms stepped into the limelight after the Indian government’s unceremonious ban on popular Chinese-origin app, TikTok. After riding on the initial wave of fame, these homegrown apps have now started solidifying their business models. This comes at a time when big league players like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are raising the stakes in the short form video space. Mitron TV, which turned one this April, has rolled out new monetisation models for creators and is looking at various innovative solutions for higher engagement on the app.

The video sharing app that started with two people now consists of 55+ people in the team. While it is scaling operations across the board, tech is taking centre stage, said Mitron TV CEO & co-founder Shivank Agarwal. With new initiatives, the platform has set the target of 100 million users in the next six months. For the second year, the focus is on how it can go bullish on vernacular and drive monetisation for creators, he added.

Other new features like Mitron Club, Mitron Academy and Mitron On-Demand have been introduced in the app. Through Club, creators can churn out engaging content exclusively for users opting for the service. Through Mitron Academy, content creators get an opportunity to share educational videos to help users learn from the platform. Additionally, with Mitron On-Demand, users will be able to place requests for on-demand content across segments.

Recently, Mitron rolled out the Editor Tool to help remove creators’ dependency to log on to other video editing apps to edit their content. Post this launch, the number of videos created using Mitron camera has jumped 50 per cent. Moreover, the platform has lately seen a huge growth in creator to user ratio, Agarwal stated. Currently, 22 per cent of the total user base falls under the creator category.

To increase brand recall, the Made in India app has also created an opinion platform where users can create videos or add text in different topics – be it sports, politics, entertainment. The initiative has been rolled out to encourage users to create a social asset. Once they come in and create a social asset, the recall to the platform increases a lot, shared Agarwal. Mitron TV is focusing more on the users who are liking, commenting, participating in opinions, along with watching videos as it aims to establish itself as a short video social media platform.

At present, the highest number of users hail from Maharashtra, making up 19 per cent of the overall base. In the western region, Gujarat is also contributing highly to its user base. Among other states, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Haryana, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha make up the lion’s share of members. From the age group perspective, most users belong to the 25-34 segment, followed by 18-24, 35-44, 45+ age groups.

While the platform is eying at markets as its next frontier for growth, Mitron TV CTO and co-founder Anish Khandelwal said that the recommendation engine is already in place to boost the growth but content strategy needs to be aligned in that line.

“I think everybody is trying to innovate the revenue model, somebody is trying the e-commerce model, somebody is going the advertisement way. Everybody has to find which model suits their product and how to benefit. The good part for us is we have seen a good trend in terms of users spending on the platform, not just time but some money since last quarter,” he commented.

“If we can convert 20 per cent customer audience into paying customers, that will be a good target for us,” he added. The platform is developing recommendations for users in such a way that it includes exploration along with personalisation. It does not want to personalise user experience in such a way that it becomes monotonous for the consumer, Khandelwal explained. Moreover, developers are focusing on the metric that if the app is showing a video to the user, he should finish the video.

At a time when short video platforms are splurging on media spend, roping in brand ambassadors, Mitron TV execs want their product to stay low-key. Agarwal stated that they have avoided media spend but users have organically liked the app. The platform is prioritising technology and improving experience for users to improve retention and engagement, rather than going on an acquisition spree by burning cash.

“For us, infotainment and edutainment are two important pillars we are very bullish about. And on the content perspective, technology perspective, recommendation engine and editor tool, we want to create differentiation. The overall idea is anybody with any knowledge to share, skill to share should come to the platform, engage on the platform,” Agarwal concluded.

  • Content creators discuss binge-worthy content at Vidnet 2019

Content creators discuss binge-worthy content at Vidnet 2019

MUMBAI: Binge-watching has become synonymous to over the top (OTT) platforms and content. Indiantelevision.com’s summit Vidnet 2019 had an interesting panel discussion on creating binge-worthy content. The panel was moderated by Indiantelevision.com founder CEO and editor-in-chief Anil Wanvari while MX Player CEO Karan Bedi, House of Cheer founder & CEO Raj Nayak, Vikatan Group managing director B Srinivasan and Viniyard Films founder Ashvini Yardi were the panellists.

Wanvari started off by asking the panellists about the shows they have binge-watched on Netflix. Yardi has binge-watched The Boys, Bedi watched The Spy, Nayak binge-watched Unbelievable and Srinivasan has watched Mirzapur.

Yardi first gave her definition to binge-watching by saying, “If we go beyond the allotted time in our head for the show, that’s binge-watching where we are hooked to the story.” On the other hand, Nayak says that you can’t categorise particular content as being binge-worthy. He said, “If we are creating content that it is good, people will watch it.”

Yardi argued, “Content can be made for binge-watching. Every online platform has guidelines according to the viewership data they have. For OTT – the first five minutes, in-between and the last seven minutes are very important. Those times are planned accordingly to hook the viewers. On television, we plan according to the breaks. Since OTT doesn’t have breaks, everything is planned from the storyline; it’s not just simple storytelling.”

Yardi believes that if content creators follow OTT’s format and create cliffs at regular intervals to hook the audiences, they can succeed in creating binge-worthy content.

However, Nayak said, “OTT players have those set rules but otherwise also I feel these are the basics that content creators do because we want our viewers to come back on the show. So, we have to create those hooks due to which they stay on television or OTT.”

Whereas, Srinivasan said, “The character and content are behind the success. Definitely there is a science to it and data involved on how to refine the whole process. But I would say content and characters are important.”

MX Player has delivered 5 to 6 successful shows in the last six months. Sharing his experience, Bedi said, “Creating content on any platform requires a lot of efforts. On online, there is a huge difference while creating content for AVoD or SVoD platform. SVoD people have already paid and they are watching as they have invested in it. On AVoD, customers move in and out as they have not invested money for viewing there, so the level of hook that content creators need to create is very high.”

Wanvari also inquired whether the content creators constantly think of hooks or they line-up the story and then get into the hooks. Yardi replied, “We create the story and build the characters first and then get into hooks.”

She also informed, “Currently, in India, everyone is learning. Most of the platforms are using what they have from parent companies and try to localise the format. It’s not necessary what works on Netflix or Amazon in America will work here because our lifestyle and mindset is different. I feel it’s a trial and error period for OTT.”

Srinivasan also said, “We are trying to understand what kind of stories work for the OTT platform. We want to create that content. We have enough knowledge of the ecosystem but the biggest constraint would be getting the writers to write in a format that is required for OTT.”

  • YouTube expanding monetisation tools for creators

YouTube expanding monetisation tools for creators

MUMBAI: Social media giant YouTube is focusing on new monetising opportunities for its top creators in addition to ad revenue. YouTube is rolling out new options for channel memberships, custom stickers that users can pay to make appear in video chats, and several new merchandising partners.

YouTube chief product officer Neal Mohan spoke on the updates in a keynote on Thursday at VidCon US. Mohan also said that while creator revenue from Super Chat, Channel Memberships and Merch was not significant in 2018, now several thousand channels have more than doubled their total YouTube revenue from those tools.

The Super Stickers will be launched in the next few months and fans will be able to purchase those during live streams and premieres in order to show creators how much they like their content. This feature is meant to compliment the existing monetisation tool Super Chat.

The social media giant is also introducing changes to membership levels allowing creators to set up five different price points for memberships. YouTube is also expanding Merch Shelf feature which was launched last year.
