    MUMBAI : With Covid-19 behind us and all restrictions easing up, it is hardly surprising that things are returning to pre-pandemic levels. It is critical to recognise that businesses and organisations are prepared for such huge changes since, as we all know, we are not returning to the way we used to run our operations. Now that the market has opened up, there is enormous potential for marketers from all sectors to capitalise on these changing trends; organisations never expected to adjust into hybrid working so rapidly. According to McKinsey, firms have accelerated and been digitised in the last two years. It was expected to take it upto 2025, but they hastened it up by three years.

    The pandemic has already demonstrated the necessity of multichannel marketing, which multi-channel marketers were aware of. It has considerably increased the use of digital channels. What makes multichannel marketing so crucial in today’s market is using diverse marketing techniques and platforms to contact and engage with a wide range of customers in a number of ways. The primary goal of multichannel marketing is to guarantee that the message reaches the target audience regardless of whatever devices they use.

    The following are some strategies to consider while developing multichannel marketing strategies:

    1. Leverage Data

    Information is one of the most powerful tools accessible to marketers. Multichannel marketing generates a vast quantity of consumer data cache. Even if a message does not convert or produce an average or mediocre outcome, it nevertheless generates data. This never-ending cycle of developing and enhancing messages and content is the foundation of true multichannel marketing. Previous data and analytics may also be used to get information about what customers want at each touchpoint. Analyze the data and detect trends in your multichannel marketing initiatives to help you target customers more effectively.

    2. Hybrid channel to elevate campaign

    The most difficult problem for any multichannel marketing plan is determining the best mix for a campaign, and strategies to begin with research. Identifying the channels to produce the best outcomes in terms of client involvement. Few channels risk oversaturation and missing out on a greater number of prospective consumers, while many channels exhaust resources and create a gap in the customer experience. Multichannel marketing must be utilised to generate important and beneficial consumer experiences at every connection, rather than simply having a balanced number of channels.

    The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a significant change in remote work for organisations all around the world. Working remotely has many benefits, but it has also increased isolation and digital weariness, resulting in digital overload. Savvy marketers have long recognised the significance of building genuine connections with their consumers, which means breaking through the digital clutter and reintroducing the customer to the actual world. Tangible and observable objects provide a sensory experience that digital interactions cannot provide.

    The only constant is change, and as a marketer, you should be aware of it and be prepared to adapt to new difficulties and modify on the run. Multichannel marketing is critical for every marketer aiming to connect customers in a significant way. An effective multichannel marketing strategy necessitates a focus on how channels should perform independently. The goal is to convert targeted audiences into customers through improved interactions; interacting with consumers across numerous channels at various touch points means more opportunities to engage and convert consumers into customers.

Sharing about the optimistic approach toward growth and expansion of Inox, Anand revealed his plan to add 16 properties with 77 screens in the upcoming year. He also talks about tapping new markets and adding 900 screens that would expand Inox’s presence to over 30 new towns and cities.

    With a holistic and in-depth knowledge of the cinema exhibition business, his expertise lies in developing & executing sales strategies, building strategic coalitions and mapping opportunities. He thrives on cluster mapping, opportunity management and working with cross-functional peers to deliver consistently.  

    Under his leadership, Inox’s business has regained its market momentum with nearly 80 per cent of its business reaching the pre-covid levels and it is expected to revive complete 100 per cent business growth in the next two months, thereby hinting towards better performance and capitalisation during the upcoming festive seasons.

    Indiantelevision.com caught up with Anand to find out about Inox’s plans and cinema exhibition business.

    Excerpts:

    On improving operational efficiencies after the merger with PVR

    While I can’t speak much on the subject, all I can say is that the synergies of the two organisations are going to fetch tremendous value for all the stakeholders, and most importantly, the cinema lovers of India.

    On levelling up Inox’s revenues and profit back to pre-covid level

    The fourth quarter served as a reminder of the pre-covid times for us as well as for the cinema industry, with the remarkable 11 million footfall and 24 per cent occupancies. Within the fourth quarter, the month of March was thunderous, to say the least, with magnificent record-breaking numbers. I am happy to say that we garnered the highest ever F&B collection in a single month, in March 2022. We also reported our highest ever quarterly spends per head or SPH at Rs 91 in Q4. On a full-year basis, we have recorded an increase in spend per head from Rs. 79 to Rs. 97 in the last year.

    On reducing fixed costs by 10 per cent via manpower reduction

    A number of organisations all over the world prioritize cost management as a routine business practice, and there are numerous ways to do it. Use of technology, optimum utilisation of resources and assets are other smarter ways to do it.

    On the capex for the current fiscal and the screen expansion strategy

    We look to add more than 77 screens in this financial year. As a brand, we have always been hungry for growth and expansion. Whether it was calendar year 21 or FY22, we ended up adding the most number of screens in the industry, even when the tides were against us. We are as optimistic as we have always been. We plan to add 16 properties with 77 screens in FY23, out of which, 13 screens have already been added.

    On deciding about different forms of multiplexes like Megaplex

    There is a lot of research and business intelligence which goes into the process of defining the shape, size and number of auditoriums for a cinema. The size and affluence of the catchment, their paying propensity, their aspirations, the competition’s presence, and the F&B revenue feasibility are some of the factors which are ascertained while giving shape to a multiplex.

    Our Megaplexes in Mumbai and Lucknow have allowed us to delight our guests with world-class cinema viewing experiences, fascinating design and ambience, great dining options and above all, fantastic memories to cherish.

    On the number of malls in the country is a challenge

    The Indian cinema exhibition industry can be characterised by a massive appetite for cinematic entertainment and a massive supply of good quality content in multiple Indian languages, but a market which is heavily under-screened. With more than five movies delivering box office collections in excess of Rs 100 crore post, the unlock after the third wave of covid is a testimony to our country’s massive consumption capabilities and well the availability of the content of terrific quality. At the same time, the screen count in our country has been marginally going down. In short, there’s ample demand and ample supply, but the mode of consumption is scarce. Our country’s bludgeoning and ever-growing young aspiration-driven population deserve more good quality entertainment destinations to enjoy the world-class content produced in India, for which the gap needs to be bridged.

    On how the government need to do more to aid the growth of multiplexes

    The entire value chain, which includes state and local level government authorities, mall developers, the technology providers and cinema chains will all have to play a part in this endeavour. The clearances to open a cinema need to be consolidated and streamlined into a single window clearance system. This should go a long way in speeding up the regulatory compliance process.

    The mall-developers community also needs to be armed with simplification of the regulatory environment around the real-estate business, which should allow them to break free and go aggressive on urbanization. Our cinema technology partners must also be prepared to add to the layers of technology and scale up to satiate the demand of various markets in our country. Overall, the government must incentivise and encourage the stakeholders in the cinema exhibition industry, which should not only help them recover from the shackles created by covid, but also set new benchmarks globally. 

    On how the box office is shaping up this year

    We have an extremely positive sentiment for FY23, thanks to an extremely rich pipeline with movies in all genres and languages, including “Dhaakad”, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2”, “Maidaan”, “Major”, “Prithiviraj”, “Anek”, “Lal Singh Chaddha”, “Avatar 2”, “Ram Setu”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Adipurush”. Movies and cricket are two primary and biggest sources of entertainment in India

    On the impact of inflation

    Cinema viewing is a part of our country’s cultural fabric, and to some extent inflation-proof, as proven by the industry’s rollicking performance over the past quarter or so. With about 10 per cent of our screens in the premium category and an even presence in 73 cities across the country, we have a fair mix of premium and affordable experiences and ticket prices across a vast price range. We have not brought in any modifications in our approach due to inflation. 

    On the plan to tap into the smaller towns and cities

    Our additional pipeline of more than 900 screens would expand our presence to more than 30 new towns and cities where we do not have our presence currently. Cinema has a universal demand in our country and we have a strong desire to get closer to our customers and take the world-class cinema experience to new geographies.

    On the revenue split between ticketing and other areas like F&B

    We generate about 60 per cent of our revenues from ticket sales, about 25 per cent of our revenues from F&B sales and about 15 per cent of our revenues from sales of cinema advertisements.

    On the idea of doing merchandising

    We are in the business of movies, and in recent times movies have transformed into movie franchises and are considered brands themselves. Like with every brand, movies also connect on a deeper level with fans who seek this connection and they develop a community with fellow movie lovers. The fans also crave a sense of belonging and something solid when it comes to their favourite movie franchise and stars. We aim to provide this sense of belonging to this large group of passionate fans through our channels. This would help us enlarge and engage the community of Inox patrons as we offer them a shared sense of enjoyment.

    On F&B activities including the home, delivery deals with Swiggy, Zomato

    Inox has implemented a comprehensive and renewed F&B roadmap with the introduction of some new processes and exciting innovations, including making our food available on online food ordering platforms, Swiggy and Zomato. The idea is to tap a new consumer base that buys our food products even if they are not watching a movie, besides strengthening the F&B revenue stream. We have also introduced home-meal replacement options. We have included meal options like Pulao, Biryani, Dal Makhani, the much-loved servings of Rajma-rice & Chana-rice, Pastas, Garlic Bread, Tandoori Popcorn and Chilli Cheese Toasts.

    Recently, we announced our partnership with table reservation and food discovery platform, EazyDiner. We are the first cinema chain in India to get listed on the table reservation platform – EazyDiner. With this collaboration, EazyDiner members can avail of a flat 15 per cent discount across all Inox food counters and Café Unwind. Making the experience more rewarding and befitting, EazyDiner members can enjoy a flat 25 per cent discount across all Insignia lounges across the country on reserving a table via EazyDiner.

    Inox has announced its partnership with ITC’s ready-to-eat, gourmet brand Kitchens of India to introduce a re-defined innovative F&B experience across all multiplexes across India. With this first-of-its-kind partnership, Inox aims to add a new experience in the cinema halls through a trusted range of 100 per cent natural, Indian gastronomical delights.

    On improving in-cinema advertising revenue 

    Yes, the advertising revenues are not just back to normal but have come back with a renewed rigour. We are back to nearly 80 per cent of the pre-covid levels and expect it to reach 100 per cent within the next two months, well in time to capitalize on the festive season with our complete might. We are seeing a new crop of brands which are keen to explore the unique benefits of cinema advertising, and take their brands to audiences, who are coming to cinemas with a huge pent up appetite for the community viewing experiences.

    With a marvellous content pipeline, a huge desire for participating in community experiences and our efforts to offer unparalleled cinema experience, we are sure of registering a strong comeback on this front.  

    On in-cinema advertising goals of the company

    While offering both reach and recall, there are plenty of benefits of cinema advertising. It offers a tremendous visual impact, which comes through the biggest possible screens that the audience would come across. Another reason behind the success of cinema advertising is the captive state of mind in which the audience is seated in the auditorium, which leads to negligible avoidance of visual communication.

    Cinemas offer higher brand recall and engagement with premium audiences compared to any other medium. While cinema advertising can act as a great tool for geography-specific marketing, we also bring on a national scale thanks to our massive presence in 73 cities with 692 screens.

    UN agency ITU to set up area office for South Asia in New Delhi

    Mumbai: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), is set to open in New Delhi by mid-2022. The planned area office, funded by the government of India, will enhance regional initiatives for sustainable and inclusive digital transformation in South Asia.

    The ITU area office and innovation centre aims to strengthen technology cooperation and boost regional telecommunications development. Through a closer presence, ITU hopes to advance shared regional priorities, such as reducing disparities between developing and developed countries in terms of Internet access, digital skills, and other socio-economic indicators after the Covid-19 pandemic.

    From India’s national capital, the new office will implement ITU initiatives and provide technical assistance and policy guidance on information and communication technologies (ICTs) in South Asia.

    “Today’s agreement is an important step in the enduring partnership between ITU and the Republic of India, and between ITU and the South Asia sub-region,” said ITU secretary-general Houlin Zhao. “I’m confident that the establishment of an ITU area office for South Asia in New Delhi will help to push the boundaries of innovation and accelerate digital transformation for all people and communities across India, the region and beyond.”

    India’s minister of communications Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the opportunity for closer regional and international engagement through the signing of a host-country agreement for the office.

    “India is proud to partner with ITU on this progressive initiative for the region, which will advance shared regional priorities, help reduce disparities with developed countries, and strengthen South Asia’s post-Covid recovery. India is determined to bridge the digital divide and help address the ensuing inequalities in digital access affecting the entire region,” he said.

    ITU promotes inclusive connectivity for all as a key part of global sustainable development. Governments, companies, research institutes, and civil society organisations from around the world, gathered at the last ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Dubai in 2018, noted the need for an upgraded regional presence to conduct programmes and projects harnessing technologies for sustainable development.

    ITU regional and area offices report to the director of ITU’s telecommunication development bureau, currently Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who said she was excited about the opening of the South Asia area office in New Delhi.

    “This new office will allow ITU to broaden partnerships, building upon current work and facilitating digital innovation,” she said. “ITU will work, together with the Government of India, to ensure that the new office strengthens ITU’s regional presence, by bringing ITU closer to member countries, and further enhances ITU’s capability to help them recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, accelerate the achievement of sustainable development, and at the same time advance digital transformation.”

    ITU’s South Asia team will focus specifically on setting up an innovation centre for exchanges of ideas, success stories, innovative solutions, and global endeavours, promoting the introduction of advanced technologies, contributing to the development of ICT/telecommunication networks and services in South Asia, providing technical assistance in relation to infrastructure, e-governance, and cross-sectoral ICT applications, assisting with human resources and capacity development and conducting other activities related to ITU’s mandate to connect the world and support the UN sustainable development goals.

    Trai defers NTO 2.0 implementation to 1 June

    Mumbai: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Thursday extended the deadline for implementation of new tariff order (NTO) 2.0 to 1 June. The previous deadline was 1 April.

    As per the plan, Trai has allowed broadcasters to revise their reference interconnect offers (RIO) by 28 February and publish the same on their websites. It has also asked distributed platform operators (DPOs) to report the distributor retail price and composition of the bouquet of pay channels by 31 March in compliance with the new regulatory framework. Those who have already submitted can revise their RIOs by 31 March.

    “Keeping in view the current pandemic situation across the country and requests received from stakeholders for extension of time for implementation of new regulatory framework 2020, it has been decided to extend the time limit for implementation of new regulatory framework 2020,” said Trai in the statement.  

    Several stakeholders have informed Trai that due to the present Covid situation most of their staff who were affected were unable to attend office due to guidelines by state governments. Cable operators’ staff were finding it difficult to reach Covid affected subscribers/areas for collection of choices.

    Further, Trai has asked all distributors of TV channels to ensure that with effect from 1 June services to the subscribers are provided as per the bouquets or channels opted by the subscribers.

    Mumbai: The total advertising expenditure (AdEx) in 2021 grew at an unprecedented 37 per cent to Rs 74,231 crore, despite the treacherous second Covid-19 wave, which crippled the economy and AdEx for almost three months of May, June and July for the second year running. This is according to the latest flash figures of AdEx estimates released by Pitch Madison Advertising Report.

    In a departure from the convention, the Pitch Madison Advertising Report 2022 released flash figures of AdEx estimates only for 2021. Contrary to its own forecast of 26 per cent growth in February 2021, which meant AdEx in 2021 would not even reach 2019 levels, AdEx has comfortably surpassed 2019 figures by 10 per cent, the flash report estimates. An exhaustive report giving medium-wise figures, forecast for 2022 and commentary will be released three weeks later, the agency said.

    AdEx has not registered a 37 per cent increase in the last two decades for which figures are available. The closest it has registered was a growth rate of 22.9 per cent in 2007. For context, in 2020 AdEx had de-grown 20 per cent over 2019.

    “The two Covid years of 2020 and 2021 have altered the structure of AdEx, but Indian AdEx has shown that it is resilient and contrary to expectation surpassed 2019 AdEx level,” says Madison World chairman Sam Balsara. “Whilst Covid Wave I had a disastrous impact on AdEx, India Inc has taken the more deadly Covid Wave II in its stride and despite a setback of four months has not only recovered during the year itself but also comfortably surpassed 2019 levels.”

    Detailed medium analysis of AdEx in 2021 with a commentary along with forecast for 2022 will be released on 16 February in Mumbai at the hands of the newly appointed Godrej Consumer Products Ltd CEO Sudhir Sitapati, who will also deliver a talk on the “The New Marketing Playbook,” said the agency in a statement.

    Mumbai: With the third wave of pandemic raging on, the majority of consumers expect the government to increase focus on strengthening the healthcare infrastructure, showed the latest pre-budget survey conducted by data insights company Kantar.

    According to the survey conducted across 12 cities, healthcare tops consumers’ concerns, followed by mounting medical expenses, and fuel prices. In a telling indicator of the increased health care expenses over the last two years, 53 per cent of consumers, especially those from non-metro cities, said they expect an increase in deductions for their medical/health insurance.

    The rising fuel prices too have also taken a toll. At least 72 per cent of the people surveyed expect the government to bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST to bring down the fuel costs. With increased focus on climate change and sustainable living, 60 per cent of consumers expect the government to prioritise subsidies on electric vehicles in the coming year.

    Tax Deductions

    With respect to consumer expectations in terms of tax deductions, investments under 80C covering multiple investment options emerged at the first rank with 60 per cent claiming they want an increase in deductions from the same. The younger, affluent salaried class consumers seemed to have a higher desire (65 per cent) for this, as compared to mass consumers (57 per cent), according to the survey.

    Home Loan EMI emerged third with 39 per cent of consumers seeking an increase in tax deduction on their Home Loan EMI’s. A higher skew for this increase was seen in metros at 41 per cent.

    “As we step into the third year of the pandemic, the public wants the government to further invest in public health infrastructure and other favourable policies like tax deductions for insurance, which help alleviate the burden of medical expenses. Concerns about fuel prices come through, as does a desire that the government should help us wean ourselves off dependency on dirty and ever more expensive fossil fuels, through e-vehicle subsidies,” said Kantar executive managing director- South Asia, Insights Division Deepender Rana.

    Cryptocurrency

    Cryptocurrency as an investment avenue is expected to continue making noise this year as well. Intention to invest in cryptocurrency also showed a jump to 32 per cent, as against 19 per cent in July 2021, possibly driven by awareness and exposure that advertising and celebrity endorsements have generated over the last few months. Millennials seem to be keener on trying this new investment avenue as their intention to invest is higher at 32 per cent as compared to those in the age group of 36-55 years which is at 26 per cent.

    “As cryptocurrencies take off and the government mulls a tax on crypto transactions, investors want the government to play a role in encouraging yet regulating these innovative finance instruments through India’s own cryptocurrency,” added Rana.

    Majority expect India to launch its own official cryptocurrency in 2022. There is an overwhelming preference towards investing in India’s cryptocurrency with 79 per cent claiming to invest in that over existing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin etc. This is driven by the perceptions of it being more secure due to clear regulations laid down by RBI.

    Interestingly, the survey also indicates that consumers are leaning towards adopting the new tax regime since it came into existence on 1 April 2020. At least 55 per cent said that they intend to choose the new tax regime in 2022.

    The survey mapped consumer sentiments and expectations from the union budget, scheduled to be unveiled on 1 February. As many as 1419 consumers aged between 21-55 years including a mix of salaried and business owners as well as mass and affluent class from the metro & non-metro cities were interviewed from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Indore, Patna, Jaipur, and Lucknow.

    #Retrace2021: A look back at print ad campaigns that stood out in 2021

    Mumbai: Reeling under the aftermath of the pandemic, the Indian print industry began its road to recovery in 2021. According to the latest Magna Global Forecasting Report released in December, overall, the print industry grew +12 per cent from a low base (2020: -40 per cent), despite the slowdown in business in 2021. Maximum growth came from Retail, Durables, Finance, Real Estate, and Government spending.

    After witnessing a tumultuous period of plummeting circulation, and advertising revenue, the industry also began pivoting fast to strengthen its digital presence. The projections paint a heathier picture, with 2022 growth expected to be broad-based, with most categories increasing spends and elections in a few large states helping to drive an increase of +14 per cent. However, a rise in cases of the new Covid variant could prove to be dampener.

    Nonetheless, Print remains one of the most trusted mediums to influence brand perceptions on critical factors like quality, price, and trust. This explains why 2021 saw the return of traditional, as well as newer brands, and advertisers to print to create some stand-out campaigns. As we begin 2022, we take a look back at some of these campaigns …

    TRUECALLER

    While the businesses were beginning to reopen, the Truecaller print ad in January 2021 set the tone for the rest of the year. The in-your-face, unmissable ad carried by the app on the front pages of leading national dailies, talked about the issue of phone harassment women face. It mentioned how women could block these numbers on the app and should step forward and report these callers. The campaign #ItsNotOk has been running for four years now. But it caught everyone’s attention, courtesy of the latest print ads. Thinkstr, the Gurgaon-based independent agency for the campaign said they were “a little jittery about spending money on print” because they “knew the circulation was down”. But the print ads outdid itself “more than any other medium we’ve advertised on.” 

    NESTLE

    When in doubt, choosing ‘Print’ seems to be the mantra of marketers. Whenever there was a need to emphasise a brand’s credibility or build trust it was the go-to medium. Nestlé India’s print campaign launched in June 2021 did just that- reinforce the brand’s assurance of offering quality products, while talking about its long-standing legacy of 100 years and ‘family-like’ trust. The FMCG conglomerate switched to the damage control mode, coming out with the print ad campaign to rebuild consumers’ faith in the brand, only days after news reports questioning the ‘healthiness’ of the company’s products surfaced.

    FORTUNE

    A similar approach was followed by the Adani Wilmar Group’s Fortune oil brand. The brand’s claims of ‘a healthy oil for a healthy heart’ suffered a beating after Sourav Ganguly, the brand’s endorser, suffered a heart attack. Prior to this, he was seen in an ad for the brand’s Rice Bran oil which promotes the oil’s heart health benefits. Fortune faced severe trolling on social media as netizens chose to highlight the irony of the situation. To salvage the situation, the brand came out with front-page ads across leading publications with the caption ‘Today seems to be a good day to talk about the heart’, which had a fit-looking Ganguly dismissing the talk about his ill-health and tackling the subject of heart health head-on. The long format copy presented as a signed letter from the former cricketer himself, pushed heart health conversation to the fore, was the brand’s comeback after the stretch of online trolling.

    INDIAN OIL

    Nothing beats the traditional medium when you want to create an impactful awareness about a social cause. Indian Oil wanted to create awareness around the ill effects of excessive honking ahead of World Environment Day 2021 (5 June). It came out with a creative print campaign, conceptualised and executed by Mumbai-based agency, Grey Group that showed the life-threatening impact honking had on other living creatures. The artwork by Vaibhav Bhilare replaced the body parts of various animals with sound waves to depict the hazardous effect the loud noise had on them.

    MANFORCE

    That Print media allows a brand to tell its brand story effectively with no excessive drama is a known fact. To simply and effectively convey its message of protected sex and to educate people to use condoms as against ‘messy’ scenarios related to the consequences of indulging in unprotected sex, the Condom brand come up with a campaign, #DontMessAround. The series of tongue-in-cheek ads which appeared in leading newspapers creatively nudged people not to engage in unprotected intercourse as it can come with bigger problems such as STDs and unwanted pregnancy, even as it drove its brand message through.

    SEBAMED

    After the famed Cola ad wars, this year saw the battle of the soaps, with major soap brands taking on one another, directly targeting their rival brands in their ads. Sebamed kickstarted the creative sledge-fest at the outset of 2021, going after other popular brands like Lux, Santoor, and Dove, by comparing them to a detergent bar. The German skincare brand made quite a splash launching a series of print ads in leading dailies, with shocking claims alleging that each of these leading soaps had pH factors (ranging from 7 to 10) that rivaled that of the detergent soap Rin, to highlight the harshness of these skincare products, as against its own which it claimed stood at ‘an ideal 5.5’.

    The brand has launched another campaign ‘Conditions apply’ with print ads taking on other anti-hair loss shampoos. The campaign sought to discredit the ubiquitous disclaimer ‘Conditions apply’ used by these products while making tall claims. It has, however, refrained from naming any brand this time.

    DOVE

    The HUL brand of skincare, Dove chose to respond to Sebamed’s ‘pH’ allegations with a print campaign that reiterated its gentleness, falling back upon its familiar messaging –that the soap is mild and comprised of one fourth ‘moisturising milk’. The print ad seen in major newspapers Dove responded to the jabs that Sebamed’s ads have taken at it, coming hot on the heels of the Sebamed campaign. The ad copy in a prominent font stresses that ‘Dermatologists have put something strong in Dove’s bar – their trust’.

    The beauty soap launched another print campaign titled ‘Stop The Beauty Test’ that attempts to call out the stereotypes associated with Indian matchmaking and goes against unrealistic stereotypes of beauty in our society. Conceptualised by Ogilvy India, the campaign urges one to look at the beautiful aspects of a person’s personality and not their shortcomings. “Khoobiyan dekho, khaamiyan nahin” says the ad released across print and other media. The print ad, written in a long format, tackles in-depth how a girl is subjected to these beauty stereotypes and biases right from childhood, only getting worse as she becomes of marriageable age.

    And it is not just traditional categories that see the profit in the printed word. Newer advertiser categories like the edtech, crypto, and several digital-first brands are also opting for the mass medium, even going full-throttle with full pager, front-page displays in major dailies. For newer categories like crypto exchanges who are in their next phase of growth in India, it becomes even more crucial to target beyond the early adopters of this digital world by associating with traditional mediums like television and print, the study noted. Thus, making print a viable medium to build credibility and trust.

    COINSWITCH KUBER

    One such platform, which has been investing heavily in print is CoinSwitch Kuber. Building trust is key to the category as a lot of uncertainty and risk have been associated with cryptos in the past. The crypto brand came out with full front-page ads in leading newspapers in the last few days. “While digital media enables us to target a certain set of audiences, print has the accessibility to the most basic audience group which finds credibility in the print news,” said CoinSwitch Kuber chief business officer Sharan Nair explaining the brand’s decision to go aggressive on print advertising.

    UpGRAD

    With eye-catching full-page ads in leading dailies, edtech brand, upGrad launched the campaign for its online MBA programs to ‘fast-forward your career’ because ‘CAT is so yesterday’. The two-page managed to grab eyeballs for the brand with its effective use of empty spaces and an attention-grabbing caption.

    TINDER INDIA

    In another resounding endorsement, a millennial and Gen Z brand like Tinder released a series of print ads, acknowledging that print still carries ‘trust and maturity’ which digital is yet to achieve. The new age dating app’s ad is indicative of how serious it is about educating its existing and potential users about consent, serving as a lesson on how many times we misinterpret our partner’s words to consider it a ‘Yes’. Tinder India’s front page Bombay Times ad is a primer on consent and what all doesn’t equate to a ‘Yes’. This ad is the latest installment from the dating app’s ongoing campaign around consent, emphasising that only a ‘Yes’ means a ‘Yes’. Nothing more, nothing less.
