  • Shane Warne’s peccadilloes cost him Channel Nine endorsement

MUMBAI: Disgraced Australian leggie Shane Warne has been axed by the Australian broadcaster Channel Nine for “unsatisfactory behaviour” off-field. Warne had a contract worth $300,000 per year with the channel.

Reportedly, Warne’s involvement with a 25-year old British student has cost him the lucrative job. Channel Nine was understood to have a clause inserted in Warne’s last contract allowing for termination if his off-field conduct was unsatisfactory. The station owner Kerry Packer made the decision to save the station’s image.

The cricketer has been involved in several controversies before, including the one in which he was reported to have sent a series of lewd text messages to a British nurse two years ago.

It was during his 12-month drugs ban in 2003 that Warne proved his commentating abilities with Channel Nine, an experience which made him stick to the broadcaster.

Cost of TV sets drops significantly in Asia

MUMBAI: Consumer technology prices in Asia dropped significantly between 2003 and 2004 despite recent concerns about increases in commodities prices used to manufacture these goods.

GfK Asia has released its 2004 Pan Asian Consumer Technology Price Index.

Australians experienced the greatest drop in consumer technology prices. The figures indicate a 26 per cent decline in average price for 29″ flat screen TV, a 36 per cent decline in the average cost for 42″ plasma TVs and a 42 per cent decline in average price for 3 mp digital cameras between 2003 and 2004.

Hong Kong, China and Singapore all showed significant dips in average prices particularly in 32″ plasma TVs, 3 mp digital cameras and mobile phones. Mobile phone prices in the region are showing the steepest decrease in average price with a 36 per cent drop across the region between 2003 and 2004.

As far as 32″ LCD TVs are concerned, Taiwan experienced the most notable drop with a 2003 average price of $4,603 moving to an average price of $2,130 in 2004. This represents a 54 per cent decline.

GfK Asia MD Andy Drake said, “Our figures indicate that despite the recent rise in commodities prices, these increases are not being passed onto the consumer. In fact, what we are seeing is that consumer technology prices are steadily declining across all product categories surveyed over the Pan Asian Region.”

Citing economies of scale as one explanation for this phenomenon Drake added, “While the drop in consumer prices may raise red flags for manufactures, the increase in commodities prices is likely being offset by the robust growth in sales volumes throughout Asia.”

GfK Asia is part of the global GfK Group. The research company has over 15 years’ experience in providing reliable Asian retail and technology market data. Its analysts track a broad range of consumer technology markets, including: consumer electronics, telecom, IT, household electrical appliances (large and small) as well as digital imaging.

  • ‘Obscene’ films cost Mumbai channel its licence

MUMBAI: The sting of India TV’s casting couch sexposes is being felt among the channels now.

After the show cause notice the information and broadcasting ministry issued to India TV over its sting operations against members of Parliament, CineWorld, an obscure channel based in Mumbai, has had its uplinking licence revoked.

The channel has been prohibited from transmitting/re-transmitting programmes for 30 days. Reason: It has been declared guilty of airing some “obscene” movies.

“The government is serious on this issue and would keep a close watch on channels engaging in such activities,” secretary for information and broadcasting, Navin Chawla, was quoted in media reports as saying. “Through this action, which is the first of its kind, the ministry has come down strongly on those purveying obscenity, and this can include cable operators as well”, Chawla added.

Cineworld is an encrypted movie channel that is available via the set-top box on some cable networks in Mumbai. According to industry sources, some cable operators outside Mumbai are also showing the channel, but through an analogue feed.

Cineworld is managed by Mumbai-based 5th Avenue.
