Disney India to premiere three Cosmos-Maya shows this summer

MUMBAI: Disney India is premiering TV Guddu, Bapu and Gadget Guru Ganesha, three new shows produced by Cosmos-Maya.

With the addition of these IPs, the Singapore- and India-based leading Asian animation studio Cosmos-Maya will now have 20 of its own produced series IPs airing worldwide now. The three shows are also launching digitally on a leading OTT platform, the details of which will be out shortly.

The news comes soon after two other Cosmos-Maya IPs, Titoo and Lambuji Tinguji were green lit by Turner India for its channels Cartoon Network and Pogo.

“We are very happy with this development and our heartfelt thanks go out to Disney India. Both parties have tasted great success with the very popular show Selfie With Bajrangi; and just like Bajrangi, these three shows are also in line with Cosmos-Maya’s USP of ‘Novelty with Relatability’. Our concerted efforts to bring joy and cheer to our young viewers have neared fruition and we are excited. For a studio the size of Cosmos-Maya, it was no small task to keep operations running, but crisis or no crisis, the show must go on. We have kept production operations running remotely from home to ensure that children are kept engaged and entertained at home,” Cosmos-Maya CEO Anish Mehta said.

Guddu chronicles the exploits of the anthropomorphic circus lion Guddu, a spin-off character from the very popular Motu Patlu franchise. The show pushes the envelope of 3D animation quality with never seen before visuals.

Bapu, the first of its kind IP inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, tells the story of a wise elder of a contemporary neighborhood in the modern world. Bapu and his three monkeys always endeavor to help kids face their problems, right wrongs and add a positive spin to adversity. Both Guddu and Bapu have been directed by Suhas Kadav, who is also the Director of the Motu Patlu franchise.

Gadget Guru Ganesha is a slice-of-life-buddy comedy set on a quintessential Indian family and beautifully encapsulates the nuances of Indian culture in an entertaining format. Gadget Guru Ganesha is directed by Dheeraj Berry, also the director of another highly popular Cosmos-Maya show Selfie With Bajrangi.

  • Cosmos-Maya notches up its distribution focus with WowKidz Distribution; starts with massive acquisition slate for distribution in Asia Pacific

Cosmos-Maya notches up its distribution focus with WowKidz Distribution; starts with massive acquisition slate for distribution in Asia Pacific

MUMBAI: Cosmos-Maya, the Asian animation powerhouse synonymous with constant evolution and innovation within the animation business today announced its next big focus on becoming the global content gateway with its distribution arm WowKidz Distribution.

WowKidz, as an AVOD platform has more than 30 million subscribers and 14 billion views. WowKidz Distribution aims at being the one stop shop for all distribution requirements of global animation content players starting with the widely growing big market of Asia and then moving to the rest of the world. Content Acquisition is one of the key focus areas for the studio in the first stage of this distribution initiative. While successful collaborations are on with the likes of Fantawild Animation and Nelvana Enterprises, this MIPCOM there will be a dedicated ‘acquisitions’ team from Cosmos-Maya to ensure that the best of content is acquired for distribution.

Cosmos-Maya has been the forerunner and flagbearer for many firsts within the animation industry in this geography. From commanding a staggering 65% share of the Indian domestic animation production market, producing 50 half hours a month to add to its existing content bank of 2000 half hours, to a multitude of European Co-Productions, the studio has been focusing on bringing about change in the dynamically evolving market.

“Our production might is one our biggest strengths as a studio and we have been distributing our own content successfully across APAC. Thereby venturing further into the distribution arena with successful international brands, through WowKidz Distribution was the next logical & synergistic business decision.”, said Anish Mehta, CEO – Cosmos-Maya, while elaborating on the plans.

Distribution continues to be the biggest lacuna in the business today as the content creation is burgeoning and there is an increase in focus on localization in each of the markets thereby creating a hindrance in the larger distribution. With its established network across the value-chain, Cosmos-Maya aims to bridge this gap and WowKidz Distribution is the first step in that direction. The company has an added advantage whereby it can leverage the extensive network of Emerald Media, the Pan-Asian media investment platform backed by US private equity giant KKR, which has a controlling stake in the company.

Anish Mehta further added, “The onus will be on acquiring best in class American, European and Chinese content, the seeds of which have already been sown. WowKidz Distribution will be a massive gateway to Asia for the high quality animation content produced by North America and Europe. WowKidz Distribution, while making the best brands from these regions accessible to Asian audiences, aims to infuse the creative and cultural sensibilities of Asia to the content. We will follow a three-pronged ‘Glocalization’ approach – marketing, dubbing and syndication of the content. Our knowledge and distribution experience of local Asian markets coupled with our creative prowess enables us to add that extra zing by dubbing and localizing the content and making it ready for consumption. Asian audiences will now have the best of all worlds.”

“With WowKidz Distribution, we will be the gateway for global content, into Asia to begin with and then scale up the geographies. The groundwork for the same has been on for a while and come MIPCOM and we will announce our first slate of acquisitions.”, said Devdatta Potnis, SVP – Revenue & Corporate Strategy, Cosmos-Maya overseeing this initiative for the studio with a dedicated WowKidz Distribution cadre from his 10 member team. “WowKidz Distribution is an effort that will negate the geographical and language barrier for content and through our network across the world, will address the need gap in the market effectively”, added Joris Eckelkamp, Head – Business Development, Europe for Cosmos-Maya.

The studio has larger plans to become a 360 degree player in the global animation circles. More, much more is in the offing that will be announced at MIPCOM.

  • Cosmos Maya’s glocalisation plan for animation in India

Cosmos Maya’s glocalisation plan for animation in India

MUMBAI: Cosmos Maya, a Singapore and India-based animation company, has revealed its plan to explore the concept of glocalisation. It believes there is a need for glocalisation to pave the way for new ideas, concepts and different styles of storytelling. The company is all set to experiment with four international co-owned IPs in the Indian market. It has already launched Atchoo in the name of Jaadu ki Cheenk on Amazon Prime Video and the other three – OPS will be launched by the name My Bhoot Friend, Leo Da Vinci will be launched as Aryan and Berry Bees as Dabanng Girls by end of this financial year.

Cosmos Maya SVP revenue and corporate strategy Devdatta Potnis, in an interaction with Indiatelevision.com, spoke on the need for glocalisation. He said," We need glocalisation because we are so ingrained in our own style of storytelling. The kind of content that we have been consuming is the same. With the concept of glocalisation we will have new and different ideas coming in."

Stating an example of Doraemon, which is a Japanese show on an American network and one of the popular shows in India, Potnis said, "The show is a classic example of glocalisation. It is one of the anchor shows of one of the biggest networks mainly because of tdevhe way it has been localised. So glocalisation is there by necessity. We are open to looking at these but we will try and present them in a different way.”

He further informed, "We have four IPs and as the international market will open up, which I hope will in 2020, we will be on the verge of signing contracts." Out of the four international co-owned IPs one of them is out on Amazon- Atchoo is the English name and in Hindi it is Jaadu ki Cheenk. The other shows are in production."Today we have a bank of 104 half hours of international co-productions and it will be ready by the end of this financial year. There is going to be a slight change by the time, whether it is for a commercial reason or overall from an industry standpoint. We are going to be ready with shows," he said.

Potnis believes that there is lot to learn from not only the western market but from the market in the east also. He shared his views on exploring the opportunities in China. He said, "If we look at the east, my current focus area is China; we have recently been interacting with a couple of Chinese companies. That market is so evolved and has quality offering for the domestic market."

Giving an insight into the domestic front, Potnis said, "The beauty of this industry is that a lot of us cannot predict what is coming next.  Something becomes a success and then we try to reverse engineer saying this is what we want. It is upon us, the creative studio, to bring in such novelty and make it reach to such a destination that it is familiarity with novelty. It should be familiar as you want to sample it for that reason and it should be novel to prick your interest."

Understanding the market trend, Cosmos Maya set up its 2D division after the 3D one to cater to the demand in the domestic market. "Generally that’s not how it works. Sometime back in 2014, our first 2D show went on air, which is Kisna with Discovery Kids and now we see a shift that there is so much demand for 2D. In fact, next year there is like a massive line-up of 2D shows,” he explained.

He further said, "Initially when I go back to 2012- there was a demand from the pay-TV broadcasters that started out and the demand has been growing consistently. Of course, not everything can be continuously on an exponential growth track and yet have a CAGR which is very fancy. But then that would kind of taper when we had OTT come in 2-3 years ago. It’s still growing effectively as a quantum growth. When that demand has kind of tapered, our own OTT platform has grown. YouTube is doing really well for us; we have been looking at diversifying into other platforms. Every time there has been a growth trajectory, the level goes up automatically. We are foraying into the licensing and merchandising space as well, which will now be the next one. I think something or the other will keep coming in."

While speaking on the opportunities, Potnis opined that there is a need to take something from India to the global market. He added that licensing & merchandising is another opportunity as is WowKidz. The company will also launch another IP called Bapu on 2 October. It had made an announcement in January that the show will be out on the 150th anniversary of Gandhiji.

  • Selfie With Bajrangi’s success continues as creators Cosmos-Maya focus on the L&M Strategy

Selfie With Bajrangi’s success continues as creators Cosmos-Maya focus on the L&M Strategy

MUMBAI: Bajrangi, the contemporary, child version of the Indian God Hanuman has penetrated households like no other. Latest BARC data indicates that Cosmos-Maya’s one of a kind buddy comedy ‘Selfie With Bajrangi’, which airs daily on Disney’s Hungama TV is a hit with children and parents alike. The show ranks #1 among all the shows in Kids Category (Local + International, Animation + Live Action) basis Average Impressions (Week 16, 2018 to Week 23, 2019).

After two successful runs on Disney’s Hungama TV in Summer and Diwali last year, the recently launched third run, comprising brand new episodes of the second season of the show, has also garnered high ratings. Disney is excited with the consistent numbers and kids may have a chance to get more of their favourite buddy Bajrangi. Cosmos-Maya is planning 10 TV Films and a theatrical film on the IP.

Bajrangi’s admiration can be attributed to the fact that it has the ability to speak to viewers in the universal language of relatability. The secret sauce is familiarity with novelty. It is set on a quintessential Indian family who all viewers can relate with. The protagonist Ankush's life changes when he meets Bajrangi, the nine-year-old child version of the Indian God, who no one but he can see. The show is modeled on kids’ day to day lives and beautifully encapsulates the nuances of Indian culture in an entertaining format. The show has become an everyday affair for families and Ankush and Bajrangi have become household names.

There is the beloved Hanuman, there is a quintessential Indian family, there are mild antagonists. Basically, it is a very feel good show that the entire family can enjoy. Thank you to Disney for helping us build this brand with their innovative programming strategies.”

Selfie With Bajrangi is another Cosmos-Maya IP after Motu Patlu to stay on top of the ratings chart for such a long period. The show’s success over the last year has helped it cross the critical juncture of being just a fad and Cosmos-Maya foresees L&M potential given its consistent success.

CEO Anish Mehta further added, “We are now our own competitors. Selfie With Bajrangi is everything Motu Patlu is not. L&M is the next logical step with this proven and consistent success.  Motu Patlu’s foray into consumer products began two years after its launch. Selfie With Bajrangi has taken lesser time in establishing itself as a highly relatable brand.”
