Sanjay Gupta has our full and unequivocal support: CNN

MUMBAI: Professionalism, humanity and need of the hour can make a human being go beyond the line. But on the other hand, a fraction of inconsistency may dilute the bravery and turn it into a debate. In a recent such occurrence CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta assisted surgeons by performing craniotomy on a young victim at Bir Hospital while reporting from Nepal which was stuck by earthquake.

The natural calamity took many lives. Amidst that, as per Dr Gupta, there was a small kid who needed immediate medical attention and that’s when he volunteered and effectively saved her life.

Post this, CNN went on to showing images of an eight year old girl in Nepal claiming her to be the one medically operated by Dr Gupta. But later on, a flurry of reports came in that questioned the claims of CNN. Reports state that the girl shown in the clip, underwent no surgery, which thus questions the integrity of CNN’s reporting.

Explaining the scenario Dr Gupta asserted, “We want to get these things 100 per cent right. It’s important, obviously, to the viewers. It’s important to the families, you know, who are there undergoing this, suffering through the aftermath of the earthquake.”

CNN, later released an official statement saying, “Journalism is not brain surgery, but brain surgery is brain surgery. We are proud that Sanjay is one of the few reporters in Nepal to cover the earthquake, and while there, he was asked to help save a young victim’s life. As we reported, he assisted the surgeons at Bir Hospital by performing a craniotomy on a young victim. While some reporting suggests that the girl in the clip wasn’t operated, we at the time of our reporting believed her to be. We will try to verify that. Regardless, Sanjay spent a week in Nepal, helped save a young life in the operating room, and we couldn’t be more proud of him. He has our full and unequivocal support.”

Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon as well as a medical correspondent.

New Palestine TV channel launch fuels controversy as it aims at Arab minority

NEW DELHI: The launch of a new television channel in Palestine appears to be kicking off a new political row in the region, which lives in constant tension.

The launch of Palestine 48, a satellite television channel of the Palestine Authority, aims to reach the 20 per cent Arab minority population in Israel during the month of Ramadan.

The plan was strongly criticized by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that he had given instructions to Israel’s Communications Ministry to examine the channel for possible criminal and other administrative measures to prevent the channel from getting on air. Incidentally, Netanyahu himself heads the Communications Ministry.

The possibility of jamming the channel may also be considered.

During a press conference, Palestinian Authority Communications Minister Riad Hassan said that Netanyahu and his extremist right-wing government could not shut Palestine 48 down. “The channel will also give a stage to the other side, to right wing people and ministers from the government,” he said.

After Flipkart, Airtel responds to Net Neutrality controversy

MUMBAI: Net neutrality activists and the Indian netizen’s valiant effort marked its first goal as after e-commerce giant Filpkart backed out from its deal with Airtel for Airtel Zero, the telecom tycoon has now issued an explanation on various controversies.

Airtel, in its statement, said that it fully supports the concept of net neutrality. “There have been some misconceptions about our toll free data platform – Airtel Zero. It is a not a tariff proposition but is an open marketing platform that:

    * Allows any application or content provider to offer their service on a toll free basis to their customers who are on our network.

    * Such customers whether on a data pack or not will therefore be able to access these toll free services free of charge.

    * No site whether on the toll free platform or not under any circumstances is blocked, throttled or provided any form of preferential access.

    * The toll free platform is open to all content providers on a completely non discriminatory basis and operates on the same principle as 1-800 toll free voice services.”

Airtel further said, “The statement made by Flipkart regarding its decision to not offer toll free data service to its customers is consistent with our stand that Airtel Zero is not a tariff proposition. It is merely an open platform for content providers to provide toll free data services. The platform remains open to all companies who want to offer these toll free data services to their customers on a completely non discriminatory basis.”

As was reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, Flipkart issued a statement saying that the company has always strongly believed in the concept of net neutrality. While it backed off from Airtel Zero, the company also said that it was committed to the larger cause of net neutrality in India.
