    CNBC inks deal with Singapore Airlines for live in-flight news

    MUMBAI: Looks like airline passengers are in a treat from television networks! The latest to cash in on this high-flying viewer segment is CNBC. The business news and information channel has inked a deal with Singapore Airlines to deliver live in-flight news on select routes.

    In an agreement with Connexion by Boeing, which claims to be the world’s leading high-speed in-flight Internet services provider, NBC Universal Cable is making available globally either CNBC Asia, CNBC Europe or CNBC US, depending on flight path, as well as MSNBC programming within the United States, informs a media release.

    CNBC’s full range of programmes will be accessible live to passengers through their laptops. These include Asia Squawk Box, the signature morning bulletin anchored by Martin Soong, CNBC Tonight, a daily evening programme combining business, news, investment and lifestyle.

    The official release also adds that Generation-e, the network’s popular weekly technology programme anchored by Keith Liu and Amanda Drury, Managing Asia, a weekly look inside the minds of the region’s top leaders, to name a few will be part of the in-flight news package.

    The Connexion by Boeing television’s service availability will be expanded later this year to include other airlines that are offering the award-winning high-speed in-flight Internet service.

    HONG KONG: Asiasat and Connexion By Boeing, a business division of The Boeing Company have announced the signing of a lease agreement

    As per the arrangement Ku-band capacity on Asiasat 3S will be used to provide in-flight broadband communication services on the Asia-to-Europe flight corridor commencing in the first quarter of 2004. An official release informs that under the terms of the agreement, Connexion by Boeing will lease multiple Ku-band transponders on AsiaSat 3S, AsiaSat’s powerful satellite at 105.5E orbital location with high-powered coverage over East Asia and South Asia spanning from Japan to Turkey.

    The satellite will provide passengers with real-time, high-speed access to Internet and data services including sending and receiving e-mails with attachments, browsing the Internet, accessing company intranets and entertainment services via their personal laptops or Internet-enabled PDAs. The connectivity also allows in-flight crews to communicate efficiently with ground operations for real-time data and information.

    Connexion By Boeing provides mobile information services. It brings broadband Internet, data and entertainment connectivity to mobile travellers. Connexion by Boeing supplier management director Jeff Flagel added, “With the addition of this satellite capability, we are effectively positioned to support the introduction of the Connexion by Boeing service to passengers on the popular Asia-to-Europe airline routes. The Asian region remains a very important market for us and the addition of the AsiaSat 3S satellite will help us deliver the in-flight connectivity that passengers in the region are asking for.”

    Boeing selects Eutelsat for in-flight internet connectivity

    New Delhi: Eutelsat, one of the world’s leading providers of satellite communication, has been selected by Connexion, a business unit of Boeing for a three-month demonstration of in-flight broadband Internet access for passengers flying between Frankfurt and Washington D C.
     

    Under this facility, Eutelsat will provide satellite capacity through its ATLANTIC BIRD 2 and also through EUTELSAT II-F4. Through these two satellites Boeing can offer a seamless network over the Atlantic Ocean and Europe to Lufthansa, and to British Airways that plans to begin in-flight demonstrations in the middle of this month.

The new service, which Lufthansa has branded as Fly Net, will operate through the service offered by Connexion, a business unit of the Boeing Company. This will enable passengers on board a Lufthansa German Airlines Boeing 747-400 to use their personal laptops and ones provided by the airline for high-speed connections to the Internet, including full access to their personal or business email accounts and files.
