  • The character of a channel

    The character of a channel

Producing a television programme in India is strange business these days. A channel’s research and development team comes up with an idea/concept and asks a producer to develop it further into a show which can be put on air. The production house’s creative directors and writers then do a lot of brainstorming and pitch the developed idea to the channel’s creative and commissioning team. The latter then give inputs to the producer and his team, who then go on to further fine-tune it to what the channel wants. There’s a lot of give and take of creative ideas between the two teams before the show goes on air.

It gets even more interesting after the show starts airing: more often than not, the channel’s creative folks start directing the producer’s team to make changes based on what is working with viewers based on TRPs. Frequently, the production house ends up being a glorified line producer with the title of producer. Normally, he or she surrenders all the rights and IPR inherent (read: copyright) in the programme to the channel for a fixed one time per episode production fee. This is unlike in other more mature television markets where creation or co-creation entitles you to some royalties of fees – often times in perpetuity.

With this background in mind, let us take a look at the recent case of involving Viacom18’s Colors. It issued a public notice in the newspapers earlier this week saying whosoever attempts to launch or be associated with its show, Comedy Nights with Kapil’s comic character ‘Gutthi’ will be taken to court.

Sources say Sunil decided to part ways because of creative differences and his remuneration, because he thought he deserved more. And another channel was willing to give him what he wanted. Colors took this extreme step because there were rumours, nay even talks going on between Sunil Grover and another rival Hindi channel to develop a show with a similar character as the comedian portrayed in Comedy Nights with Kapil. Produced by Kapil’s K9 Productions along with the Fazilla Allan-Kamna Menezes run SOL Productions, the comedy with its fresh feel and look and gaff lines had taken the nation by storm. In fact, it had given Colors a powerful shot of TVTs, and made both Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover who plays Gutthi household names.

Not surprisingly, Colors’ fired a notice in the newspapers. It read: “A certain artiste and a stand-up comedian associated with the programme Comedy Nights with Kapil aired on Colors television channel is planning to launch or be associated with other shows, wherein the said artiste is likely to perform the character of ‘Gutthi’ or use the mannerisms and characteristic features of ‘Gutthi’ or any other character played by the artiste in the said programme.”

Ever since, many in the industry have been drawing parallels with numerous instances wherein television channels, particularly entertainment, have been overtly possessive about their actors when moving from one channel to the other or quitting a show mid-way.For instance, when actor Giaa Manek, who rose to popularity with her portrayal of Gopi bahu in Star Plus’s Saath Nibhana Saathiya, decided to participate in a reality dance show on Colors, Star Plus revoked her contract and replaced her with another actor.

Ditto with Ratan Rajput, who made it big as Laali in Zee TV’s Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo. She decided to be part of Imagine’s reality show Ratan Ka Rishtaa even before Agle Janamwrapped-up. While the producers of Agle Janam, Swastik Pictures, had extended the series for a few months, Rajput landed in trouble as she had already accepted the proposal for Ratan Ka Rishtaa. It snowballed into a fight with Zee TV threatening to slap a case against Rajput if she left Agle Janam before it ended as she had signed a contract with the channel.

Most of the time, the law comes into play much later but channels and production houses prevent their popular characters/actors from venturing into any other show. Like Mohit Raina, who plays the titular character in Life OK’s Mahadev, is not allowed to act in any other series as ‘the audience would lose interest in his character’. Even Karan Singh Grover, who plays Asad Khan in Qubool Hai, is given an exclusivity fee by Zee TV to discourage him from bolting to any other channel.

TV channels also resort to prohibiting their actors from revealing their true identity in public. For example, Mona Singh, who played Jassi in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, for months made public appearances in braces and a pair of obsolete spectacles just to keep audience interest in ‘Jassi’ alive and ticking. In a similar vein, there were reports about actor Gurmeet Choudhary’s early ouster from a dance reality show in 2012 as he wasn’t performing too well and prolonged participation would have hampered his popularity on another fictional show. Then again, there have been instances in the past where popular characters have reprised their acts in other shows across channels without anyone taking exception. For example, Bharti Singh, who rose to fame with her Lalli act in Star One’s Laughter Challenge, has frequently revisited her character on other shows and no one’s made a noise about it.

Ditto for child comic Saloni Daini, who has repeated her Gangubai act on various platforms. For that matter, even Kapil Sharma, who has reprised Shamsher Singh from Sony’s Comedy Circus on Colors’ Comedy Nights with Kapil

As far as specialised events like awards airing on a rival channel go, at times the Hindi GECs have insisted that actors go dressed in the character garb that they wear on screen. On other occasions, they have simply refused to let any of their actors even be seen on the awards show, thinking they would increase the TVTs of a rival channel.

Clearly, broadcasters and creators have sent out mixed signals: at times they have been firm about how much they are willing to yield; at others they have not done anything and watched mutedly as actors have gone about doing as they please.

Hence, the Colors vs Sunil ‘Gutthi’ Grover case could end being a landmark one. That is if Colors pursues what it believes in to the end.

  • Times TV: Scans Cannes for English flicks

Times TV: Scans Cannes for English flicks

With the recent introduction of Romedy Now to its existing portfolio of channels, the Times Television Network (TTN) will be exploring new content opportunities for its channels Movies Now and the newbie at this year’s MIPCOM.

Set to take place in Cannes’ eponymous Palais des Festivals off the Boulevard de la Croisette between 7 and 10 October 2013, MipCom is expected to be the biggest since several years, and it appears as though the entertainment ecosystem seems to have shrugged off the economic woes that have been making news headlines in several countries worldwide.

The scale has tilted from being a buyers’ market to a sellers’ market over the last few years stresses Ajay Trigunayat

For TTN’s English entertainment channels CEO Ajay Trigunayat, this would be his tenth year at Cannes. Having represented Zee from 2002 to 2006 and TTN (Movies Now) from 2010-12, this year, Trigunayat will be scouting for content to be shown on Romedy Now, TTN’s newly launched romance and comedy channel.

“I’ll be looking for movies and series and if there is something interesting, then I will have a look at that as well,” says Trigunayat, adding, “The scale has tilted from being a buyers’ market to a sellers’ market over the last few years.”

While a cross-section of genres like romance, comedy, action, thriller and horror would be under his scrutiny, he isn’t too keen on drama movies. “We don’t buy drama because it does not have too much of traction with Indian audiences,” he emphasises.

For TTN, MIPCOM is more about meeting people and getting to know them on a personal level. According to Trigunayat, it’s a catalyst for meetings to happen while real deals happen later on.

He is looking forward to meeting biggies like Fox, Warner Bros, and Regency and see what they have in store for them from this year’s releases. On the subject of budgets, he says a substantial amount of money (higher double digit crores) is kept aside for acquisitions, the discussions for which begin or end as deals at MIPCOM.

He gives an example of how discussions were initiated with Monarchy, the production side of Regency, last year, and more than 100 titles were bought from them. He points out that his team is sticking to big titles and from major studios worldwide and Latin American films are not part of his slate as their quality and sensibilities don’t appeal to Indian viewers.

Sab TV revamps look; announces marketing initiatives

Comedy general entertainment channel (GEC) SAB TV has added vibrant colours and new motifs to its channel and show packaging, which went on air from 9 pm onwards on 21 June.

Argentinian design studio Steinbranding was hired for the revamp."Our new look signifies renewed freshness and a positive move into the future, truly articulating the spirit of ‘Asli Mazaa SAB Ke Saath Aata Hai‘. We have only changed the clothing of the show, but retained the content, concept and basic colours. We have also added more designs which is relayed between soaps," said SAB TV EVP & business head Anooj Kapoor at a conference held at JW Marriot Hotel.

And in order to further propagate the fact that it has a fresher and peppier look it has put together quite a few promotional films on the lines of its existing ‘Sab Ka Wakt Ata Hai‘ called "Saas-bahu," "Mooch" and "Hands-Up."

The channel‘s management announced that it is going the whole hog on digital with online games and applications. One of these is ‘Sabarbia‘, a one of its kind social game, which has attracted 75,000 people in the past two months.

The channel has also launched a loyalty program called ‘Sab ki Sawari‘, through which viewers are rewarded for watching its shows for longer durations: they get a chance to meet their favourite actors on the sets of different Sab shows. "Then we have school programmes called Sab ki Paathshala that aims to engage with a younger audience by providing them with interactive learning experience," added Kapoor.

Then SabTV has integrated free applications including, SAB Ke Comics – a mobile app available on iOS and Android smart phones. The application has over 100 comic strips of six shows cracking jokes on five popular characters of Sab. The five characters which have been animated include: SAB ka Gadha, SAB ka Gopi, SAB Ka Gulgule, SAB ka Mama and SAB ki Jeannie. "The application has already registered 200,000 users," informed Kapoor.

Apart from this, Sab has rolled out ‘SAB Khelo SAB Jeeto,‘ an unique game show that can be played with the entire family. The game show enables fans and consumers to participate and win gifts and merchandise.60 per cent of the channel‘s total promotional budget is set aside for TV advertising, 30 per cent for print and the remaining 10 per cent for out-of-home advertising and others. "As far as digital media is concerned, we have not made any investments. It is just a platform for us to drive the audience to television," said Kapoor.

The channel has gone in for oodles of activation in malls, Big Bazaar, Cafe Coffee Days and multiplexes and has a huge outdoor presence – over 700-800 hoardings pan India, excluding Mumbai. "In Mumbai, we have placed our hoardings in over 100 bus shelters in residential areas," said a source.

The faith that both Sony Entertainment COO N.P. Singh and Kapoor have had in taking the comedy route for the channel five years ago seems to have been well-placed when one looks at its success today.

"Our ratings have gone up by 600 per cent and revenues by 900 per cent in the last five years. We have seen a surge in advertisers from 25 in 2008 to 80 plus now. With its current presence in the US, the UK, Australia and South Africa, the channel will soon expand to Dubai," Kapoor informed.

  • Fukrey – A comedy of errors

Fukrey – A comedy of errors

MUMBAI: Fukrey‘ is a local northern slang – meaning good for nothing. The film is about four such young men. Three of them need a large sum of money to bribe their way into the most happening college in Delhi. This is not because they are keen on good education, but because this college boasts of best of girls on campus, cool parties and freedom to stay away from classes and just have fun.

    Producers: Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar.
    Director: Mrighdeep Singh Lamba.
Cast: Pulkit Samrat, Manjot Singh, Ali Fazal, Varun Sharma, Vishakha Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda.

Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma are classmates who look grown up because both have failed at least thrice in school. Also, they stick together all day. They have no chance of passing school exams yet dream of getting into college. They decide on doing a recce of their dream campus but it is tough to pass the gates being manned by Pankaj Tripathi. Of course, if one knows how to tackle Tripathi, he is very helpful. The boys make a deal with Tripathi that for a large sum he will get them the exam papers in advance and let them enter the college campus. There they meet guitar strumming Ali Fazal; Fazal has no problem getting into the college, as he has one getting out. He has been roaming around the campus nursing his dream to make a music album. His love angle, Vishakha Singh, teaches in the same college. Tripathi also has one more prospective customer, Manjot Singh, who wants to get into the same college because his girlfriend is here. Since he does not possess the merits, Tripathi offers to get him in against a donation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the college.

Meanwhile, Fazal has a bad news that his father has suffered a stroke and he urgently needs to raise a lakh of rupees for his treatment. The four lads have met and now have a common aim, to raise money. But, they have a very resourceful mentor in Tripathi. He takes them to Richa Chadda, known as Bholi Punjaban who, contrary to her name, is a ferocious woman whose vocabulary is mainly filled with abuses; she deals in drugs, false email racket, pimping and the works.

Samrat and Sharma have a dream to sell to Chadda. Sharma has some peculiar dreams where Samrat is being mauled by a god or an animal which he narrates to him. Samrat interprets this dream to work out a lottery number which they always win. Chadda is convinced to invest the seed money in the dream lottery but she does so only against the papers of Manjot‘s father‘s halwai shop. Under pressure, Sharma fails to get any sleep and hence no dreams but scared of his friends, he makes up a dream. The money is gone and the four lads are now slaves of Chadda till she recovers her money. Her intention is to keep using the boys to do her illegal bidding. She asks them to sell drugs at a rave party in the neighbourhood and also sends the cops after them. The boys somehow escape but Chadda‘s lien on their heads has mounted to Rs 25 lakh after losing the drugs she gave them to sell. The only way out of the trap is for Sharma to dream again.

There is no story for most part of the film and it carries on mainly on gimmicks of Samrat and Sharma and the encounters of Manjot with a local charasi. The story, such as it is, begins after the entry of Chadda. What follow is crazy comic situations backed with funny one-liners. Chadda excels as a loud female villain. Among the boys, Sharma and Manjot shine with good support from Samrat. Fazal and his love interest Visakha are okay. Tripathi is very effective. Music does not add much to the film. Dialogue is good.

Fukrey has some appeal for Delhi and surrounding areas, but the rest of the country will find limited attraction.

Ankur Arora Murder Case – A medical thriller hitting the conscience

    Producer: Vikram Bhatt.
    Director: Suhail Tatari.
Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra, Arjun Mathur, Vihakha Singh, Paoli Dam, Sachin Khurana, Manish Chaudhari, Ashish Jain.

Ankur Arora Murder Case is about the might of a powerful wrongdoer being challenged by an honest one without resources. A film in the recent past which comes to mind is Jolly LLB. This film deals with medical negligence and efforts by a powerful doctor and the hospital management to cover up the death caused by negligence.

Ankur, a young boy, complains of stomach pains and is brought to hospital where an intern, Arjun Mathur, diagnoses appendicitis but advises to admitting Ankur for the night until a stomach scan can be done in the morning. Mathur as well as his co-intern and lover, Vishakha Singh, are on the team of Kay Kay Menon, whose skills are legendary. Both the interns are in awe of him and treat him as their idol.

After the scans, Mathur‘s diagnosis proves right and the boy has to undergo a simple surgery to remove his appendix. Menon decides to delay the process by a day in the interest of hospital coffers which Mathur does not find justified. One hour before the operation, Ankur gets hungry. While his mother, Tisca Chopra, is out buying medicines and stuff for him, he is tempted to eat a few biscuits kept next to him; this is against doctor‘s advice to refrain from eating anything eight hours prior to surgery.

The boy tells the nurse about this when asked and the nurse duly informs Menon who decides to do the needful to clean the patient‘s stomach before operation. However, too busy on his mobile, he starts the surgery as soon as he enters the operation theatre (OT); this despite a nagging feeling in his mind that he was forgetting something. Soon as the surgery is over and the boy stitched up, the boy starts vomiting, his windpipes are blocked stopping oxygen supply to his brain and he goes into coma. Menon and his team fail to revive him and the boy is dead in two days.

Menon and his management are all powerful and his team is threatened to keep the matter quiet. The nurse who had warned Menon is sent off to her native place. Mathur, who has been banned from Menon‘s OT team, smells something fishy in the manner of Ankur‘s death. His girlfriend, Vishakha, though present in the OT, refuses to tell him what happened. She leaves him for her career which Menon could ruin if she talked.

Mathur and Chopra decide to take the matter to court. Paoli Dam fights their case. All the witnesses, including Vishakha and the nurse who is traced to Goa and brought to the city as witness, turn hostile. The case is as good as lost. But Vishakha decides to do one last brave act and win her love back. As she goes to Menon‘s office to tender her resignation, he loses his mind and goes off tangent delivering a long rant comparing himself to god and calling the boy‘s death a minor mistake in his career. Vishakha has, of course, recorded this whole scene on her cell phone and it soon makes its way to news channels.

The story is routine and such things don‘t shock people anymore. Performances by Menon, Mathur and Chopra are good. Direction is fair.

There is nothing commercial about Ankur Arora Murder Case.
