“The future depends on how we will balance AI and ML with ethical considerations:” Emmy sound design winner Cory Choy

He is an award-winning sound guy. Sound as in reliable; sound as in to do with audio. Cory Choy and his boutique sound studio Silver Sound Studio, located in the heart of New York City, have made a name for themselves, which is the envy of many others.

Silver Sound boasts an Emmy award-winning team of on-location sound recordists in New York and Los Angeles. Choy himself picked up the lovely golden lady for his work mixing the sound for a show “Born To Explore.”

His studio provides recording, design, edit, restoration and mix services and has worked with all sorts of people all over the globe including, but not limited to: ABC, NBC, Vice, Comedy Central, ESPN, Disney, Google, Microsoft, CNN, MTV, FOX, Netflix, Apple, Shudder and Spotify.

In a wide-ranging interview, the Emmy Award-winning sound artist, engineer and studio owner discusses the evolution of audio technology, creative freedom, and the intersection of art and social responsibility. Here are the key insights from his conversation with Indiantelevision.com group CEO and publisher Mishaal Wanvari.

On what sparked his interest in sound design.

It was an inevitability rather than a decision. Both my parents were musicians – my mother wrote plays and operas, while my father combined music with computer programming. One of my earliest memories is watching my mother’s opera being performed at the Kennedy Center. But it was my father who showed me how technology could amplify creativity. He connected a Midi output from the game Monkey Island through a Casio keyboard, making it sound like a full orchestra. He connected a midi through a keyboard with a massive and professional instrument sound bank– which was far superior to the stock soundcard midi instruments. That early demonstration showed me how technology could be used to bring people together… the midi experience taught me that looking for a unique solution and setups can bring great power and creates experiences far beyond what people expect.

On the evolution of sound editing tech during his career.

I started at the very end of physical tape editing, where you had to physically cut and splice tape together. There was no undo button – once you made a cut, you had to live with it. The transition to digital audio workstations was revolutionary. Suddenly, all your tape was right in front of you, you could cut anywhere, and if you made a mistake, you could simply undo it.

The economics were equally transformative. In 2006, a professional Pro Tools system cost around $10,000 – might as well have been a million to me at the time. But then Dell provided affordable, powerful hardware, and I discovered Reaper, which cost just $60. With a $2,500 Dell computer and Reaper, we were competing with studios using much more expensive equipment. Reaper vs. Avid – every single line of code in reaper is very well thought through with a small team, it is very efficient, and the entire program is designed to empower the user not restrict it. There is more freedom and there are more possibilities in Reaper than any other program I have ever used.

On his Emmy Award win and on his experience thereafter.

We won it in 2016 for the programme Born to Explore. One of our most impressive achievements was capturing crystal-clear dialogue from a host 200 feet away on a lake, using a highly directional Sanken CS-3E microphone. The water’s surface actually helped carry the sound. What made it special for us was that we won it in a category that is extremely competitive.

On his Aisha win at the Tribeca film festival.

It’s a fascinating story that began with an intern application. Fayshyo Aluko, a Nigerian poet with no sound experience, applied for an internship. When I asked why she wanted to work in sound, she simply said she wanted to explore sound design. I gave her a poem I’d written about a Palestinian girl, inspired by my own daughter’s questions about human rights.

What Fayshyo brought to it was extraordinary – she incorporated traditional Nigerian storytelling techniques, using an oil drum beat as a metaphor for both footsteps and heartbeats. Her first-ever sound design piece won at the Tribeca Festival. It went on to win a Signal Award and an Anthem Award for human rights work.

On the industry’s relationship with technology.

The accessibility of technology has been revolutionary. When I started, a gigabyte of storage was massive – Pro Tools required one gigabyte just to install. Compare that to Reaper, which was just two megabytes. The difference? Avid spent their programming efficiency on creating paywalls – $50 here, $100 there, some plugins over $5,000.

But now, with affordable computers and software, small studios can compete with anyone. Though the challenge isn’t doing the work – it’s finding it. If you’re not in the elite class, convincing someone from that class to work with you is the real challenge.

On what’s next for sound design and sound mixing.

We’re at an interesting inflection point with AI and machine learning. The technology is incredibly powerful, but we need to consider the ethical implications. For instance, voice cloning technology could be used for scams or misinformation. The wealth gap in computing power also means some will have access to these tools while others won’t.

The future of our industry will depend on how we balance these technological capabilities with ethical considerations. It’s not just about what we can do, but what we should do.

AI is both enabling and potentially corrupting. It’s incredible for tasks like analysing a voice and removing unwanted noise, but it also raises ethical concerns. We can now make someone sound like they’re saying something they never said, with their exact voice. While that’s exciting from a creative standpoint, it’s concerning from an ethical one.

I have mixed feelings about the cloud-based AI tools emerging in our industry. Tools like Eleven Labs are incredibly powerful, but they raise important questions about access and control. What happens if these services suddenly become restricted based on geography or politics? It’s similar to the wealth gap we’re seeing in computing power – those with access to unlimited energy and graphics cards will have more capabilities than others.

What’s fascinating is watching how different regions approach these challenges. Chinese engineers, for instance, are often outwitting their American counterparts with fewer resources. It’s not just about having the most powerful tools – it’s about how creatively you use what you have.

On the way forward for small studios in a competitive market.

The tools have never been more accessible, but the challenge is standing out in an increasingly crowded space. There are billions of talented people in the world, everyone has something unique to bring to the table, and the competition is fierce while resources are limited.

However, I believe independent studios have an advantage in being more nimble and able to take creative risks. The key is finding your unique voice and the audience that resonates with it. It won’t be the easiest path, but if you really want to be in this space, you absolutely can make it work.

And yes, the model has changed completely. At Silver Sound, we’ve evolved from a partnership to a more focused operation. The pandemic really took a chainsaw to the industry in 2020 – many partners and staff left, and we weren’t sure we’d survive. But then I met our current studio manager and latest engineer, both in their 20s, and it gave us new direction.

Now our mission is to help develop new talent while remaining economically sustainable. We want to create things that make both us and the world better, but in a way that supports everyone financially. It’s about finding that balance between artistic integrity and commercial viability.

The hardest part isn’t doing the work – it’s finding it. If someone gives me a project and appropriate funding, we can create something extraordinary. The challenge is breaking through that class ceiling where elite-level clients don’t trust smaller studios with significant projects.

That said, I believe boutique studios have advantages in today’s market. We can be more responsive, take creative risks, and maintain closer relationships with clients. The key is finding clients who value that personal touch and creative freedom over the prestige of a large studio name.

    On his feature film.

Sound and music are integral to my film Esme, My Love – you really won’t understand the movie without them. We made it for $135,000 total, yet people think we spent £3 million. That was only possible because we had Silver Sound as a home base. It’s now being dubbed into Spanish and Portuguese, with Korean potentially next.

It’s still an independent gem – not widely known in the United States or globally – but I’m proud that it got distribution. You can find it on Amazon and Tubi. We spent six years working on it, ensuring it didn’t feel like something just slapped together.”

On his approach keeping in mind the technical versus creative aspects of sound design.

Technical precision is only a means to an end – creative decision-making is everything. If you don’t have the technical ability to execute your creative vision, then you need to improve technically. The more technical ability you have, the better you understand what’s creatively possible. They feed off each other.

We offer two modes at Silver Sound: we can either help someone achieve their vision to its highest level possible, or we can work with them to create a vision from scratch. People come to us because they know our technical work is solid, but we provide a creative aspect that many other companies can’t match.

On how technology vendors have evolved in service.

I’m particularly grateful to Dell, and this isn’t just corporate speak. In New York City, their ProSupport service has been invaluable. When a computer breaks down in a professional studio, having a skilled repair technician on-site within 24 hours is extraordinary. Finding a reliable repair person independently could take a month.

However, I’m watching carefully how technology companies position themselves during these challenging times. We need companies that empower creators rather than restrict them. The best technology partners understand they’re enabling creativity, not just selling hardware.

On what excites him most about the industry’s future.

The democratisation of technology has opened up incredible possibilities. When I started, the barrier to entry was hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, with a decent computer and some affordable software, talented creators can produce professional-quality work.

But what really excites me is seeing how younger generations approach these tools. They’re not bound by traditional workflows or assumptions. They’re combining technologies in ways we never imagined, creating new forms of storytelling. The challenge will be maintaining high creative standards while embracing these new possibilities.

On advice for aspiring sound designers.

Do what you love, but understand the economic realities. Unless you join a large company, it’s not an easy path financially. You can live a good life as a sound mixer and designer, but if you’re independent, you need to be a business person as well. If that’s not your strength, find a business partner who can handle that aspect while you focus on the creative work. The competition is fierce and resources are limited, but if you truly want to be in this space, you absolutely can make it work.

On his belief that media has social responsibility and his willingness to remind it of it.

Many companies are afraid to take moral stances for fear of alienating potential clients. This year, I’ve made a conscious business decision to openly oppose fascist movements in America. Yes, we might lose some potential clients, but I believe we’ll attract more of the kind of clients we want to work with. You can be moral and ethical, but if you can’t feed your family, it’s no good. However, I don’t want to survive in a way where my soul isn’t surviving.

Media mogul Sumner Redstone passes away at 97

Mumbai: Sumner Redstone, the influential US media mogul who owned CBS and Viacom, passed away at the age of 97, as confirmed by his family on Tuesday. Redstone had been a central figure in the entertainment industry for decades, serving as chairman of the board of directors for both CBS and Viacom until stepping down in 2016 due to declining health. His resignation followed internal family disputes over the companies’ control, with his family maintaining a majority stake.

In late 2019, CBS and Viacom were merged into one entity, managing some of the most well-known television networks and film studios in the world, including CBS, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Showtime, and Paramount Pictures. This consolidation placed the company in the same league as other major U.S. media corporations such as Disney, Time Warner, and 21st Century Fox.

Born Sumner Murray Rothstein in Boston in 1923, Redstone changed his surname in 1940 to Redstone. He graduated from Harvard University and served in U.S. military intelligence during World War II. In 1954, he joined his father’s business, which he later transformed into National Amusements, one of the largest cinema operators in the United States.

Redstone survived a near-fatal fire in 1979 and went on to play a pivotal role in shaping the media landscape throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He fought fiercely to gain control of Paramount Pictures and later took over Viacom, which owned MTV and CBS. Viacom and CBS merged in 2000 but split again in 2006.

Redstone’s remarkable career left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and his legacy continues through the companies he built and reshaped.Sumner Redstone

  • The market for NFTs cannot be restricted by demographics: Anshul Ailawadi

The market for NFTs cannot be restricted by demographics: Anshul Ailawadi

Mumbai:  Viacom18 YME (Youth, Music, and English Entertainment) cluster stepped into the fast-emerging NFT-verse in January with the extension of its ‘FullyFaltoo’ franchise that went on from being a show on MTV and a brand solutions studio, to now an NFT marketplace that will launch its diverse range of digital collectibles. These exclusive collectibles will also have creations inspired by pop culture properties like ‘Roadies’ and ‘Bakra’.

“The move was spurred by the thought that we have a really rich legacy of edgy and unique artwork that has played a key part in the life of most of our consumers. Taking this association a step further, how can we give them a chance to own it?” says Viacom18 head- youth, music, and English entertainment Anshul Ailawadi.

The marketplace fullyfaltoonft.com is powered and facilitated by NFT ecosystem technology framework GuardianLink.io.

Commenting on the partnership as well as the relevance of NFTs for iconic youth brands like MTV, Vh1, and Comedy Central in India, GuardianLink.io co-founder, and chairman Keyur Patel shares, “MTV resonates with GenZ at all three levels – brand, art, and emotions. With its understanding of the youth and a great legacy of popular art, MTV is poised for success in the NFTverse. I see this as the coming together of some of the most interesting creative assets by an interesting brand in an interesting space!”

    ‘NFT’ what?

Non Fungible Token (NFT), essentially blockchain-certified digital art, is a rare, and unique asset deemed as a ‘collectible’. It appreciates over time in value as it is traded or auctioned.

The technology involves three aspects. First is the basic tech that can be scaled to facilitate global participation in the NFT auction. Secondly, so as to make the process more inclusive, multiple payment gateways like credit/debit cards, UPI, and crypto are to be enabled. The third and specific aspect is that of ensuring the security of minting, transferring, and storing NFTs. This secures the NFTs against theft and forgery. Guardian’s high-impact NFTs are protected by its Anti.RIP technology and legitimacy protocol explained Patel.

Just the way all talk about ‘Non Fungible Tokens’ starts with demystifying this apparently loaded term, Viacom18’s campaign around its NFT debut, too, begins with educating the audience about the basics.

“Aimed at both the brand loyalists as well as fence-sitters, our communication has a lot of explanatory stuff around what are NFTs, and how to engage with/trade them. Basically, the first phase of the campaign will be more about ‘trust building’, whereas, the subsequent phases will delve into technicalities like the risks and opportunities involved,” says Ailawadi.

Even though heavily focused online, there’s also an on-air component to the promotions. Additionally, Viacom18 is targeting online spaces and communities such as Reddit and Discord that have audiences engaging in lively conversations around NFTs.

    Takers all across

Ailawadi believes that the crypto revolution is spread across the country, and the market for NFTs, therefore, cannot be restricted by demographics. “We are clear about the fact that our brand loyalists will be the first set of adopters. They are present all over India, in the metros as well as in towns like Kochi and Chandigarh that are not tier1. ‘Fence sitters’ who understand that there is a legitimate offering backed by an iconic brand out there, will come next.” he asserts.

Needless to say, the audience for NFT has a younger skew. However, refraining from generalising, Ailawadi adds, “there are risks associated with NFTs, so people who either do not understand or do not have an appetite for them should think before engaging with them.”

While the digital natives have had a predominantly virtual mode of expression, interaction, and existence at large, when it comes to NFTs, the question that’s being asked is whether they would also like to own something unique virtually?

In this regard, Patel shares an insight stemming from the origins of the phenomenon. “Basically, NFTs got their momentum from the GenZ gamers who collect goods in the virtual space through in-game purchases. With the coming of NFTs, they realised that they can now have authentic stuff for their game that can not only be bought and stored but is also tradable. That’s when this whole thing picked up.”

    Why NFTs

Non Fungible Tokens became a phenomenon last year when the digital artist known as Beeple sold an NFT of his art for $69million through an auction at Christie’s. That was the defining moment for the world of digital art. NFTs could make brands and celebs.

What was yesterday just another digital fad for the uninitiated, is today a rare collectible for the loyalists and buffs, and it has the potential of evolving into a ‘utility’ or ‘asset’, sooner than anticipated. Giving an analogy, Patel observes that NFTs will be in the same space as a 140-character tweet which fetches nearly Rs four million today.

Commenting further on the current and future value of NFTs, Aliwadi remarks, “Many of us had a predilection for collectibles like postal stamps, coins, or tazos in our younger days. While we always had the chance to collect and trade, the opportunity to authenticate and showcase them was limited. Collecting NFTs is the digital equivalent of philately or numismatic, which takes care of these two pain points as well. NFTs can be authenticated by virtue of having a digital signature, and once you are on a marketplace or prominently displaying them on social media platforms, the world will surely notice.”

That’s about the current value of NFTs, but going forward the possibilities are enormous. “Imagine having a chance to attend MTV Supersonic backstage with an MTV NFT. That’s some time away though! We’ll eventually be there,” reckons Ailawadi.

TV channels celebrate Mothers’ Day with special programmes

MUMBAI: Unlike other Mothers’ Day, celebrations outside home have been put on hold this year due to the Covid2019 lockdown. While many of us are rethinking how to celebrate the presence of the most special woman of our lives, TV channels are all set to make the day special with a host of special programming.

Let’s look at what the major TV channels have in store:

Sony BBC Earth celebrates mother’s day with a special line-up of top five shows that highlight the relationship of mothers with their little ones.  These are heart melting animals stories that show how animal mothers go that extra mile to protect, nurture and raise their young ones, just like humans do. It includes shows like Snow Wolf Family and Me, Reindeer Family And Me, Elephant Family And Me, Gorilla Family And Me, Tiger- Spy in the Jungle.

    Snow Wolf Family and me

Cameraman Gordon Buchanan wants to find out more about the Arctic wolf, a notoriously elusive and feared predator. This heartwarming series follows Gordon as he attempts to gain the trust of a wild wolf pack and its three pups, revealing the true nature of this remarkable animal for the first time. From the dramatic moment when wolf Luna’s vulnerable three cubs emerge from her den, to Gordon’s attempts to be accepted by the pack, this is a year of joy, emotion and drama in Canada’s high Arctic wilderness.

    Reindeer Family and me

Join Gordon Buchanan as he travels into the wilderness of Lapland to see nature’s greatest spectacle – the Northern Lights. Gordon spends time living with the indigenous Sami people, who teach him essential skills – from ice-fishing to tracking predators – and even give him a reindeer to join him on his journey. He then makes his way to one of the best places on Earth to view the Northern Lights, where he is treated to an enchanting natural light show. Reindeer Family & Me offers an inspiring look at the beauty and unique culture of Lapland’s remote wilderness, as well as highlighting the drama of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomenon.

    Elephant family and me

Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan travels to the spectacular Tsavo wilderness in Kenya to try to get closer than ever before to a wild elephant family. African elephants are one of the most dangerous animals in the world, killing more people than lions or any other predator. But Gordon believes that elephants become dangerous only because of our actions towards them. He wants to see if it’s possible to gain the trust of these majestic giants. In this series, Gordon follows the struggles of first-time mother Wendi and her spoilt new baby, Wiva. He walks with some of the largest tusked elephants on Earth and sees what it takes for an elephant family to survive in today’s Africa.

    Gorilla family and me

Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan ventures deep into the Congo to find out more about the largest gorillas in the world. Grauer’s gorillas are beautiful yet little known giants living in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes. To get to know his gorilla family, Gordon must earn the trust of the massive and potentially dangerous Silverback male – Chimunka – but he must also watch out for the powerful, testosterone-fuelled young males vying for supremacy within the family. When Gordon and the baby gorillas of the troop get caught up in an epic battle between Chimunka and his huge brooding rival Mugaruka, the lives of the family hang in the balance.

Tiger – Spy in the Jungle

Bouldercam and a host of new spycams are on their most exciting mission yet. Carried by elephants, they film India’s most charismatic big cat deep inside the Indian jungle, uncovering the hidden wildlife that shares the tiger’s realm. This revealing programme follows the different stages of a tiger’s life from playful cubs, to learning adolescents and ultimately to young hunting adults. It also provides a unique insight into how the relationship with the other jungle animals changes as they mature including sloth bears – a rarely filmed bear with a unique character – famous for carrying its comical babies on its back, and leopards – the tiger’s major competitor.

Viacom18 channels have also planned an innovative content line up for the special Sunday. Here is the details of Mother’s Day special programming:

    Comedy Central features favourite moms:

From the emotionally stunted relationship of Leonard and Beverly Hofstadter to the inappropriately intimate one between Howard and Mrs Wolowitz, from the perennially virtual relationship of Raj and Mrs Koothrappali to the endearingly playful one of Sheldon and Mary Cooper; it's celebrating mothers – we can’t live with them and we definitely can’t live without them! This Mother’s Day, tune in to Comedy Central India on 10 May, Sunday from 1 pm onwards – to watch hand-picked episodes from The Big Bang Theory, featuring favourite moms from the show!

Colors Infinity celebrates mothers who dare:

Ever so often we tend to forget all that our mothers do for us. We forget that they’re so much more than just our mothers – they are multifaceted, talented, go getters who go to extreme lengths just to be able to support us! So, this Mother’s Day, the channel is celebrating the mothers who dared!  Tune in on this special day to watch Younger, the story of Liza, a 40-year-old single mother who pretends to be younger than she is, in order to find a job to help support her daughter. The sixth season can be binge watched 1pm onwards on Sunday, 10 May.

    Vh1 celebrates Boss Moms :

That’s why it wanted to put together a playlist dedicated to all those single mothers who raised their kids to achieve their dreams. A two-hour block airing at 12 pm, 5 pm and 10 pm on Sunday, will feature artists like Jay Z, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Tupac, Alicia Keys, and many more who have been raised by single moms.
