Upgrade to whole-mouth-health with New Colgate Total toothpaste

MUMBAI: Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited, the market leader in Oral Care, has launched its New Colgate Total toothpaste with an innovative formula offering multiple benefits to provide superior Oral Care to protect not just the teeth, but also tongue, cheeks and gums. Hence, the New Colgate Total urges consumers to ‘Upgrade to Whole Mouth Health.’

Colgate communicates about the New Colgate Total in a fun way through The Singing Dentist, a UK-based dentist named Milad Shadrooh, in a playful song called ‘Brush Them Well’, a parody of the popular Bollywood track ‘All Is Well’. Featuring in the video alongside The Singing Dentist are three other well-known celebrities – Yasmin Karachiwala – one of the most celebrated fitness trainers in Mumbai, Manish Paul – Bollywood actor and stand-up comic, and Pranitha Subhash – South-Indian actress. Sung by The Singing Dentist (Milad), in his characteristic comical manner, the parody video features all the four popular icons as they dance along, while conveying the significance of ‘whole mouth health’, ensured by the New Colgate Total. This campaign is conceptualized by FoxyMoron and created by The Rabbit Hole in association with Red Fuse Communications.

Mr. Arvind Chintamani, Vice-President Marketing, Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited said, “The New Colgate Total offers ‘holistic’ oral-health. It fights germs not just on the teeth but also on the tongue, cheeks and gums, for up to 12 hours, helping one achieve ‘whole mouth health’. To communicate the product’s multiple benefits we have created a clutter-breaking campaign for social-media, with Singing Dentist -Milad Shadrooh, and 3 other popular youth icons. Through a parody based on Bollywood’s popular ‘All is Well’ song, the product’s benefits are conveyed in an interesting and engaging manner that builds an instant connect with our consumers and helps them internalise the message. We are confident of its appeal to our audience.”

Speaking about his collaboration with New Colgate Total, Milad said, “I am very excited to be collaborating with Colgate to create my first Bollywood inspired parody! I have always aimed to deliver key oral health messages in a fun and positive way and I am passionate about treating oral health as part of our overall health. As a dentist, I have always tried to educate my patients to clean their teeth. Teeth make up 20% of the mouth, the remaining 80% are the tongue, cheeks and gums and these surfaces harbour bacteria as well, needing a similar level of protection as teeth, to achieve whole mouth health. The new Total toothpaste does exactly that as it focuses on whole mouth health and spreading this message, in the Singing Dentist style, was a great opportunity! And of course, my eyebrows were very excited to join in too!”

The New Colgate Total provides excellent protection against plaque, gum problems, stains, tartar and cavities – plus additional new benefits like:

    Suitable for sensitive teeth
Instant neutralization of odors associated with bad breath
New cooling flavors for lasting freshness
The New Colgate Total is available across various retail formats at a variety of price points starting from a Rs. 97/- pack to a Rs. 184/- pack.

The New Colgate Total was launched with a video communication on YouTube and other social media channels at the beginning of the year, persuading consumers to – Upgrade to Whole Mouth Health. During the launch phase, Colgate played special demo videos and used informative POP material to educate consumers to take care of their teeth, tongue, cheek and gums with New Colgate Total across their retail footprint. Additionally, for an increased ‘word of mouth’ and better impact,

Colgate employed unconventional ‘out of home’ channels, like tying up with PVR Cinemas to surprise movie-goers at 10 PVR outlets across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai, by offering them a seat-upgrade just before the start of the movie, truly demonstrating the meaning and benefit of an ‘upgrade’. This campaign too was much appreciated by cine-goers, who enjoyed such an instant-elevation and it generated a lot of positive social- chatter for the brand, firmly embedding and extending its message of – Upgrade to Whole Mouth Health to a large audience base.

  • More TV ads by top 10 advertisers in 2018 than 2017

More TV ads by top 10 advertisers in 2018 than 2017

BENGALURU: Indian television broadcasters have a reason to smile in 2018. During the first 32 weeks of 2018, the top 10 advertisers from Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) placed 21.42 per cent more television insertions than in the first 32 weeks of 2017. The combined total number television insertions by BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 advertisers across genres for the first 32 weeks of 2018 were 13,255,057 as compared to 10,916,451 insertions during the first 32 weeks of 2017.

If ad insertions by the top 10 advertisers are a yardstick for the increase in television ads, broadcasters and marketers can definitely expect ad revenues to perk up with more number of advertisements during the fag end of 2018. The major Indian festival season is yet to come – hence the ad tempo can only go up.  If one were to go by the trends of 2017, the number of ad insertions in 2018 could go up by 15 to 20 per cent as compared to the previous year. During the last 20 weeks of 2017, average television advertisements per advertiser among the top 10 advertisers per week had gone up by 16.97 per cent as compared to the first 32 weeks of 2017. Between weeks 33 to 52 of 2017, the average weekly TV ad insertions by BARC’s weekly list of top 10 advertisers had gone up to 27,163.66 from an average of 23,222.52 during the first 32 weeks of 2018.

Please refer to the figure below for the weekly comparison of the combined total insertions of all the top 10 advertisers during the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018 respectively.

There were 27 advertisers that were present at least once each in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 advertisers during the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018. Hindustan Lever Ltd or HLL was the biggest advertiser by far during the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018 with an average of 122,725.65 and 129,604.28 weekly insertions respectively (5.60 per cent increase). At second place was Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd (RBIL) with an average of 59,340.66 and 95,546.63 weekly insertions during each of the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018 respectively (61.02 per cent increase). Both HLL at ranks 1 (HLL- 32 weeks) and RBIL rank 2 (29 weeks)/rank 3 (3 weeks) were present in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 advertisers during the first 32 weeks of 2017. In 2017, only the above mentioned two advertisers were present in BARC’s top 10 advertisers list during all the first 32 weeks of 2017. This year besides HLL and RBIL, ITC Limited (ITL) and Cadbury India (Cadbury) were also present in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 advertisers during all the first 32 weeks of 2018. Both the companies’ – ITC and Cadbury’s average weekly insertions in 2018 were higher than their average weekly insertions in 2017. ITC, which was ranked third in 2018, had average weekly insertions of 33,002.88 in 2018 (32 weeks average) as compared to 18,959.9 in 2017 (20 weeks average), or a 74 per cent y-o-y increase during the periods under review. Cadbury’s average weekly insertions in 2018 were 18.41 per cent more at 27.410.88 (32 week average) as compared to 23,150.03 (31 week average) in 2017. Please note that the growth of average number of weekly insertions has been calculated by determining the average weekly insertions in the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018 only when these brands were present in BARC’s weekly lists of top ten advertisers across genres. The actual difference may not be the one mentioned above.

Most of the advertisers’ average insertions per week when they were present in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 advertisers across genres have increased in 2018 as compared to 2017. Some notable examples are Procter & Gamble (38.51 per cent increase); Amazon Online India Pvt Ltd (16.47 per cent increase); Colgate Palmolive India Ltd (6.44 per cent increase); Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (17.03 per cent increase); Marico (33.05 per cent increase), etc.

A few of notable players that have had a y-o-y fall in their TV ad insertions during their presence in BARC’s weekly lists during the first 32 weeks of 2018 are Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved (Patanjali) (-5.70 per cent*), Brooke Bond Lipton India Ltd (-2.03 per cent*) and Ponds India Ltd (-4.48 per cent*).It must be noted that fall in percentages have been derived by calculating the difference in average weekly insertions in 2017 and 2018 only when these brand owners were present in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 advertisers during the first 32 weeks of 2017 and 2018 respectively. The actual difference may not be the one mentioned above.

  • Colgate-Palmolive Q-2015 marketing spends at Rs 201 crore

Colgate-Palmolive Q-2015 marketing spends at Rs 201 crore

BENGALURU: Q2-2015 has witnessed probably what has been Colgate-Palmolive (India) highest advertisement and sales promotion spend (marketing or ASP) in a quarter at Rs 201 crore (20.1 per cent of Total Income or TI) based on the data over the last 10 quarters starting Q1-2013 until Q2-2015. Q2-2015 ASP was 11.3 per cent more than the Rs 180.55 crore (18.7 per cent of TI) in the immediate trailing quarter (Q1-2015) and 68.2 percent more than the Rs 119.47 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter Q2-2014.

    Note: 100,00,000 = 100 Lakhs = 10 million = 1 crore

Colgate-Palmolive’s brands include Colgate for oral care, Palmolive, Charmis and Halo for personal care, and Axion for household care.

Please refer to figure A below. Over the 10 quarter period under consideration, Q2-2015 ASP is also the highest in terms of percentage of TIO, with the previous highest being 18.7 percent of TI in Q1-2015.

Across seven financial years starting FY-2008 until FY-2014, the company’s TI, ASP  and ASP as percentage of TI show an upward linear trend, with the company’s marketing spends being the highest both in terms of absolute rupees and percentage of TI in FY-2014 at Rs 688.66 crore (19.2 per cent of TIO).

In H1-2015 (six month period ended September 30, 2014), Colgate-Palmolive’s ASP at Rs 381.55 crore (19.5 percent of TI) was 72.8 percent more than the Rs 220.86 crore (12.3 percent of TI) in H1-2014 and was more than double (2.21 times) the ASP of Rs 172.64 crore (11 percent of TI) in H1-2013.

Similarly, across the 10 quarters under consideration in this report, TI, ASP and ASP as percentage of TI show an upward linear trend. Colgate-Palmolive’s TI in Q2-2015 at Rs 1000.52 crore was 3.9 percent more than the Rs 956.90 crore in Q1-2015 and 9.5 percent higher y-o-y than the Rs 913.75 crore.

Colgate-Palmolive’s TI in Q2-2015 at Rs 1000.52 was 3.9 percent more than the Rs 963.55 crore in Q1-2015 and 9.5 percent more than the Rs 913.75 crore in Q-2014. For H1-2015, Colgate-Palmolive’s TI improved 9.5 percent to Rs 1957.42 crore from Rs 1790.56 crore in H1-2014. The company had reported TI of Rs 3578.81 crore for FY-2014.

Colgate-Palmolive’s Advertisement spends to increase in Q3-2015?

Colgate-Palmolive’s ASP comprises of two components – (a) Advertising, and (b) Sales promotion. Data for 3 financial years – FY-2012, FY-2013 and FY-2014 show the breakup of ASP into these two components. Please refer to Fig A1 below. If one were to assume the lowest percentage in figure A1- 63.8 of ASP, as component of ad spend, the company’s advertisement spend in Q2-2015 works out to about Rs 128 crore. The simple average of the ad spends for the three years works out to 66.8 percent or about Rs 134 crore.

Going by the company’s trends in FY-2013 and FY-2014, ASP has been higher in Q3 than in Q2, hence the chances of the company spending at least the same, if not higher amounts towards marketing in Q3-2015 are quite high.

    PAT

Colgate-Palmolive’s PAT in Q2-2015 was 4 percent lower at Rs 129.58 crore (13 percent of TI) than Rs 134.91 crore (14.1 percent of TI) in Q1-2015, but was 18.3 percent more than the Rs 109.52 crore (12.2 percent of TI) in the corresponding quarter of last year. YTD, in fiscal 2015, Colgate-Palmolive’s PAT at Rs 264.49 crore (13.5 percent of TI) was 10.3 down as compared to the Rs 294.74 crore (16.5 percent of TI) in H1-2014.

On an annual basis, the company’s PAT shows an upward linear trend in terms of absolute rupees, but a downward linear trend in terms of percentage of TI. During the 10 quarters under consideration, the company’s PAT shows almost flat to downward linear trend in terms of absolute rupees and a downward trend in terms of percentage of TI.

MMA today also released its annual India Mobile Ad Spend Report powered by exchange4media. Based on extensive research, the report estimates the total digital ad spends in India to stand at Rs 3,300 to Rs 3,600 crores with mobile ad spends at Rs 475 crores. Mobile ad spends are expected to grow at a rate of 52% to reach Rs 722 crores in 2015.

“The MMA has been tracking the growth story in India for a while now and our faith in the market keeps getting stronger. Our Mobile Ad Spend Report shows that marketers are not only recognizing mobile’s potential but are actively integrating the channel into their marketing mix,” said Rohit Dadwal, Managing Director, Mobile Marketing Association Asia Pacific. “The SMARTIES™ awards are our way of recognizing the best-in-class mobile campaigns run by leading brands. The winners of the 2014 SMARTIES India Awards have demonstrated how the creative use of mobile can help build better brands and increase engagement while driving business results.”

The winners of SMARTIES™ awards were selected following a rigorous process involving a council of senior brand marketers and advertising leaders. The judges reviewed campaigns from 65 entries that came from across India, spread across sectors like telecommunication, sports, social media, healthcare, travel, banking, and sports before choosing winners.

An analysis of the winning entries, presented at the event by research agency and Knowledge Partner, Millward Brown, found that successful brands and marketing strategies had well-defined clarity of purpose with 100 percent of winners identifying a specific objective of increasing awareness or sales. 70 percent of the winners also had a precise role for mobile using the channel’s unique strengths such as location, payments, and targeting. 50 percent of winners at the SMARTIES™ India 2014 Awards built relevance of the brand in the target consumers’ context. 70 percent of the winners used mobile synergistically with other media channels.

Commenting on the winners Jury Chairman, Mr. Sam Balsara, Chairman and Managing Director, Madison World, said, “Brands and marketing strategies are increasingly adopting a mobile-first approach and the competition in innovation and creativity is only getting tougher. In such an environment, it gives me immense pleasure to lead the mobile marketing conversation and thank all my fellow jury members for their valuable insights and time. We selected the winners after extensive debate and deliberation and are extremely impressed with the results some of the campaigns have achieved.

Commenting on the Ad Spend report Mr. CVL Srinivas, CEO at GroupM South Asia said “The increasing number of formats being explored everyday on this medium gives every advertiser a chance to experiment. Once an advertiser cracks the communication type

being best received, he will naturally increase spends. The evolution is on the marketer, an increase in smartphone penetration. “Mobile has huge potential across the board

from a media reach and targeting perspective. From finely segmented audiences

in cities to those who are in media dark areas, mobile can deliver massive numbers for any campaign. The challenge lies in getting the right idea and keeping the engagement going”.

The SMARTIES™ Awards is the only global awards programme dedicated exclusively to mobile marketing.

Being recognised and awarded on platforms only encourages us to push the limits and strive for more innovations. Red Fuse and our client Colgate-Palmolive work as true partners and the successful results of the new-age full service agency is here to stay.”
