  • Jism 2 first weekend collection at Rs 209 mn

Jism 2 first weekend collection at Rs 209 mn

Mumbai: Jism2, starring porn star Sunny Leone, drew curious crowds as it opened but took a beating as the new week dawned. The movie known for its sleaze content, had a first weekend collection of about Rs 209 million, including Rs 7.4 million collected from paid previews a day before the regular Friday release on 3 August.

Kya Super Kool Hai did very well in its first week to collect Rs 352 million, the advantage being a low price tag. The second weekend proved decent enough with figures of Rs 55 million.

Aalaap, a film about Naxals v/s youth, fared poorly at the box office and collected about Rs one million in its first week. Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai, with total collections of Rs 1.3 million over two weeks, is a lost proposition.

Cocktail sailed through its third week with figures of Rs 39 million. Bol Bachchan added Rs 45 million in the fourth week to take its total collections to Rs 975 million so far.

Gangs Of Wasseypur collected Rs 800000 in its sixth week taking its total to Rs 261.5 million. Rowdy Rathore took its nine week total to Rs 1.39 billion, adding Rs 1.8 million for the week.

  • CFSI fails at the box office with Gattu

MUMBAI: The Children‘s Film Society of India (CFSI) has failed to find box office success with its films yet again. The award-winning Gattu failed to win theatrical audiences, disappointing CFSI‘s commercial attempt made after a 16-year gap.

The last film that CFSI released was Santosh Sivan‘s Halo in 1996.

Gattu, directed by Rajan Khosa, is a film about a small child‘s passion to fulfill his dreams helps him get admission in a school. It won several awards including the ‘Best Film’ award at the 12th New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF).

Gattu had good opportunity as all the Friday releases were weak and proved to be disasters at the box office. Stale and out of sync in its content and treatment, Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai proved to be a commercial dud.

Challo Driver met with a similar fate, failing to find patrons as it lacked face value and enough promotion.

Meanwhile, despite a limited exposure, as most screens were blocked by Bol Bachchan, Cocktail excelled to find appreciation from the youth. The film collected Rs 538 million and was holding steady in the second weekend as well.

Bol Bachchan remained fair in its second week, mopping up Rs 216 million, to take its total net collections at the box office to Rs 821 million.

Teri Meri Kahaani ran out of steam in its fourth week, while Gangs Of Wasseypur added Rs 6 million in its fourth week to take its total to Rs 264.5 million.

Ferrari Ki Sawaari added Rs 5 million in its fifth week. Its total net collections so far stood at Rs 281.5 million.

Rowdy Rathore collected Rs 5 million in its seventh week to take its tally to Rs 1.38 billion.

  • Cocktail collects Rs 650 mn globally in opening weekend, says Eros

MUMBAI: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and debutante Diana Penty starrer romcom, Cocktail, has grossed Rs 650 million at the box office globally in its opening weekend, said Eros International.

The film has grossed over Rs 500 million in India with a net collection of Rs 350 million, and Rs 150 million from the overseas release.

Produced by Eros International and Illuminati Films and directed by Homi Adajania, the film released worldwide on 13 July.

Commenting on the film‘s performance, Eros International Media Senior VP – Distribution – India Nandu Ahuja said, “Cocktail is a young urban film and has taken the metros and multiplexes by storm. We are anticipating the youth to drive the momentum through the week and maintain the good numbers.”

  • Cocktail nets Rs 359 mn at BO in first weekend

MUMBAI: Cocktail hit it off with the youth, especially at the elite multiplexes, with its contemporary approach to a love triangle. The film ended its opening weekend with Rs 359 million.

Bol Bachchan braved mixed reports to end its first week reasonably well with figures of Rs 615 million; the film registered a huge drop on the second Friday but did better on Saturday and Sunday which accounts for its ten day thrust having taken juice out of its potential.

    Meanwhile, 3 Bachelors passed unnoticed.

Teri Meri Kahaani had a measly Rs 4 million to show for its third week.

Gangs Of Wasseypur collected Rs 18.5 million in its third week, taking its total tally to Rs 258.5 million.

Ferrari Ki Sawaari remained on the lower side, collecting Rs 8.5 million in its fourth week. The movie has collected Rs 276.5 million so far.

Rowdy Rathore collected about Rs 9.5 million in its sixth week, mopping up Rs 1.38 billion at the box office.

  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to release on 29 March 2013

MUMBAI: After a lot of hobnobbing, the exact date of release of the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone-starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been declared.

The upcoming movie, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, has found its release date. The film, produced by Dharma Productions, will release on 29 March next year. Earlier, it was scheduled to release in the first month of 2013.

Apart from the talked-about couple, the film also stars Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur. The film, directed by Ayan Mukherji, would be his second venture for the production house, the first being Wake Up Sid.

The film will also mark Kapoor and Padukone’s third film, after Love Aaaj Kal and Cocktail.

  • An almost perfect concoction

MUMBAI: Take a base of Archie, Betty and Veronica in their innocent (not so innocent here) early days, mix it with age-old 1960s films where the hero eventually falls for the girl embodying the Indian values and add a twist in the form of the other girl falling for him too. That is why this film, with London as its background, is called Cocktail; it is a combination of emotions, but a well-mixed and mostly enjoyable one.

Producers: Dinesh Vijan, Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Lulla.
    Director: Homi Adajania.
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty, Boman Irani, Dimple Kapadia, Randeep Hooda.

This Archie Andrews, Saif Ali Khan, meets Veronica, Deepika Padukone (which is her character’s name too). She is fun-loving and rich; her idea of fun loving being to accommodate any guy who will be ‘nice’ to her for a ‘few days, a week or a month’, according to her own definition.

Meanwhile, Diana Penty has been done in by one of those dowry-seeking NRIs, Randeep Hooda. He came to Delhi to marry her for money, went back to vilayat and forgot all about her. She landed up to spring a surprise on him but he was not the kind who wanted her to pile on to him. His justification is that it was a fair deal: he needed money and Diana Penty, an orphan under the guardianship of her aunt, wanted to be in UK.

Stranded in a foreign land with nowhere to go and no contacts, Penty is spotted by Deepika Padukone, a couldn’t-care-less type whose parents have been too occupied with their own lives to remember her existence. This Veronica has a humane angle too; she may look full of life but thanks to the emptiness within, seeks the opportunity for a companion. She picks up the damsel in distress, takes her home and they forge a bond of friendship. Both complement each other as Penty turns Deepika’s house into home and Deepika, in turn, teaches her how to dress trendily and to enjoy life. That is when Saif Ali Khan enters their lives.

Saif Ali Khan is a compulsive flirt and anything in a skirt is good enough for him to flirt with. He tried his lines on Penty at the airport as soon as she landed in London but failed to get anywhere. So Deepika decides to pay him back in his own coin when they spot him with his associates at a restaurant; she gatecrashes their party and uses the same cheesy lines he used on Penty, claiming to be his pregnant wife. The incident adds a third angle to Deepika-Penty equation as Saif charms Deepika enough to move in with the duo and into Deepika’s bedroom. Both are convinced that it is a temporary affair like earlier ones. But Penty is uneasy because she can’t stand Saif and is not used to the idea of temporary live-in relationships.

As Deepika initiates simple Penty into London life, the three of them pack in all the fun they can together. This is the fun part of Cocktail. Boman Irani adds his bit every time he is on screen, playing Saif’s mama who has made tall claims about Deepika to Saif’s mother, Dimple Kapadia. She is keen to marry off Saif to a nice, demure girl. Boman has told Dimple that Deepika is all that she wants for Saif’s wife. But Dimple drops in to London to meet Saif’s choice at the most inopportune time: Saif is dressed by Deepika in a see-through dress, lipstick and the rest. He is dancing as Penty is shooting a video when Dimple enters the scene.

It is time to introduce his choice of wife to Dimple and instinctively, Saif introduces Penty as the girl. Deepika, in her tail shirt and panties, is not really dressed for the occasion. But now the fun and games are over as the story turns into one of love triangles hereafter. She was always around but Saif really notices Penty now and love happens. After all, with Deepika it was meant to be only an arrangement sans romance. Things become mushy as Saif now loves Penty, Deepika realises she actually loves Saif and it is melodrama time.

Cocktail, a joyride in the first part, becomes dull after the interval. The scenes look stretched and almost sink the film when, towards the end, it makes up with a plausible and justifying finish. Love triumphs and friendship survives. What works for Cocktail is its no-holds-barred youth appeal. It is not pretentious in projecting love and relationships as they are defined now. The casting is intelligent as is choosing London as the backdrop. Music, which plays a huge part in any romantic film working, plays its part here. The songs are appealing and well choreographed; Yaariyan….,Daru desi … are among the better ones while Tumi ho bandhu promises to be popular on caller tunes circuit. Dialogue is funny where needed.

Performances are generally good since all the actors play what they are good at and are close to their real selves. However, Deepika tops the list with an impressive act throughout; Cocktail is her film all the way. Diana Penty adds freshness and is comfortable in her role. Saif Ali Khan has done such roles before and mastered them by now, so he breezes through. Boman Irani is very good and so is Dimple Kapadia in a brief role. Director Homi Adajania generally handles this love triangle well, only losing grip for a while in the second half, but otherwise blending its ingredients ably.

Cocktail is aimed at the multiplexes-going youth and will be lapped up by them. The film’s opening response is heartening at multiplexes.
