  • How English News channels have fared so far

    BENGALURU: Amongst the twenty or so channels (about 10 domestic, rest international) that beam English News into India, Times Now lead the genre by far during for the first 18 weeks of 2017 (or a little more than two thirds of calendar year 2017) according to Broadcast Research Council of India (BARC) data. This paper is based on BARCData for Top 5 English News channels weekly lists for weeks 1 to 18 of  2017: All India (U+R) : NCCS AB : Males 22+ Individuals. BARC weeks 1 to 18 cover the period from Saturday, 31 December 2016 to Friday, 5 May 2017.

    Combined weekly impressions (CWI) means the sum of all the weekly impressions of channel of all the weeks under consideration. It may be noted that the CWI of other channels that have not made it to top five English News channels list during the weeks under consideration could be higher, but have not been considered in this paper.

    Of the six channels that made it to BARC’s top 5 lists in terms of weekly impressions,four were present in the lists during all the first 18 weeks of 2017. One channel – BBC World News made it to the top 5 English News channels list for 16 of the first eighteen weeks of 2017, while News X made it to the top 5 lists twice (weeks 11 and 12) during the first 18 weeks of 2017.

    Times Now was ranked first during all the first 18 weeks of 2017 in terms of the combined sum of BARC’s weekly impressions in sums of thousands – (000s) Sums during all the first 18 weeks of 2017. Times Now had CWI of 13,412 (000s) Sums during the period under consideration. Trailing behind at second place was India Today Television at second placewith CWI of 6,687(000s) Sums. India Today Television was ranked second during 12 of the eighteen weeks of 2017 and third during the rest of the six weeks.

    India Today Television was followed by CNN News 18 with 5,940 (000s) Sums. CNN News 18 was ranked second for 2 weeks, third for seven weeks and fourth for nine of the first 18 weeks of 2017. Close on the heels of the Network 18 groups flagship news channel was NTDV 24X7 with CWI of 5,706 (000s) Sums at fourth place. NDTV 24 X 7 was ranked second for four weeks, third for five weeks, fourth for eight weeks and fifth for one week during the first 18 weeks 0f 2017.

    Please refer to the figure below for weekly data for the six English News channels considered in this paper.All the top four channels scored their highest ratings of year 2017 until week 18 during week 11 of 2017.The simple average of the combined weekly impressions of all the top five news channels in BARC’s list works out to 1922.765 including the figures for week 11 of 2017. Excluding week11, the simple average for the combined weekly impressions (000s) Sums of all the top five news channels in BARC’s list works out to 1,706.353 (000s) Sums, or more than 200,000 Sums of impressions lower. The sum of the highest combined weekly impressions of the all the English News channels in the top 5 channels list during weeks 1 to 18 of 2017 was in week 11 at 4,897 (000s) Sums, while the lowest was in week two of 2017 at 1,179 (000s) Sums.

    The highest ratings scored by Times Now, the leader of the English News genre, was in week 11 with 2,282 (000s) Sums in week 11and the lowest was 475 (000s) Sums impressions in week 5 of 2017. Excluding data for week 11 of 2017, the simple average of Times Now weekly impressions was 654.706 (000s) Sums during the first 18 weeks of 2017

    India Today Television scored the highest rating in week 11 of 805 (000s) Sums impressions (it was ranked third in week 11) and the lowest rating of 225 (000s) Sums impressions in week 2 of 2017 and its simple average of weekly impressions excluding data for week 11 was 346 (000s) Sums during the first 18 weeks of 2017.

    CNN News 18 had a score of 1,006 (000s) Sums impressions in week 11 (it was ranked second in week 11). Its lowest score of 175 (000s) was in week one of 2017, and its simple average of weekly impressions was 290.235 (000s) Sums during the first 18 weeks of 2017.

    NDTV 24X7 had a score of 656 (000s) Sums impressions in week 11. Its lowest score of 192 (000s) was in week three of 2017, and its simple average of weekly impressions was 297.059 (000s) Sums during the first 18 weeks of 2017.As is obvious, the ratings for week11 were the decider for the third place during weeks 1 to 18 of 2017.

    On Saturday, March 11, 2017 (the first day of BARC week 11 – March 11 to Friday 17 March 2017) assembly elections results for Indian five states of the country were announced. On that single day, the top four English News channels ratings exceeded the simple average ratings for an entire week during the first 18 weeks of 2017. Please refer to the figure below.

  • India Today & ABP slip, NDTV 24X7 & India TV climb a slot each as Aaj Tak reigns

    MUMBAI: Times Now continued to be the leader of English news genre with a hike in ratings whereas, in English business news genre, CNBC TV witnessed a downfall in ratings but maintained the top slot. In Hindi news (U+R), Aaj Tak witnessed a dip in ratings but continued to lead the genre across the market. CNBC Awaaz too, after a fall in ratings, continued to dominate the genre.

    English News channel

    Times Now continued to lead the genre with a slight hike in the ratings this week. The channel registered 595 Impressions (000s) followed by NDTV 24×7 on the second spot with 383 Impressions (000s) and India Today Television on the third spot with 304 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 with 258 Impressions (000s) stood at number four and BBC World News grabbed the fifth spot with 111 Impressions (000s).

    English Business channels

    Even after witnessing a dip in ratings this week, CNBC TV retained the number one position with 510 Impressions (000s) as compared to last week’s 630 Impressions (000s). ET Now too saw a downfall but managed to pocket the second position with 232 Impressions (000s) this week. NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 63 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 45 Impressions (000s) and CNBC TV18 Prime HD took the fifth place with 32 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News

    Aaj Tak, with decreased ratings, retained its numero uno position with 109866 Impressions (000s) in BARC week 15. ABP News was at the second position with 89800 Impressions (000s). At the third and fourth slots, respectively, India TV and Zee News interchanged their past week’s positions with 88759 Impressions (000s) and 82865 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 68385 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural

    Aaj Tak, with a fall in its ratings, emerged as the number one channel in the rural market with 50951 Impressions (000s) as compared to 57455 Impressions (000s) last week. ABP News was at the second place with 42510 Impressions (000s) and India TV grabbed the third position with 37382 Impressions (000s). India News and Zee News, respectively, took the fourth and fifth place with 33452 and 31853 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Urban

    Aaj Tak, with a decrease in its viewership, emerged as the leader in the urban market with 58914 Impressions (000s) as compared to 68054 Impressions (000s) last week. India TV bagged the second slot with 51430 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 51011 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 47290 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 41217 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre as ratings fell from 1719 Impressions (000s) last week to 1692 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1190 Impressions (000s).

  • Hindi News, Urban & Rural, observe increased ratings

    MUMBAI: The English News genre witnessed a substantial increase in ratings this week. Led by Times Now, the players have seen a steep rise in their viewership. BBC World News exited the Top 5 list making way for the entry of News X.

    In the English Business News space, players observed mixed ratings. The genre was dominated by ET Now.

    In the Hindi News, Urban and Rural genres, players have observed a hike in their viewership this week. The Hind News genre continued to be dominated by Aaj Tak.

    According to week 11 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), in the Hindi News Rural space, India News departed the Top 5 list this week paving way for the entry of News24. Players in the Hindi Business News space also witnessed increased viewership this week.

    English News

    Times Now with a whopping spike in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 2282 Impressions (000s) this week as against 777 Impressions (000s) last week. CNN News18 was at the second slot with 1006 Impressions (000s) while India Today Television took the third position with 805 Impressions (000s). NDTV 24×7 with 656 Impressions (000s) and News X with 148 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

    English Business News

    ET Now continued to dominate the genre with 676 Impressions (000s) followed by CNBC TV18 with 668 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 80 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 28 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD took the fifth place with 18 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News

    Aaj Tak with increased ratings continued at its number one position with 178049 Impressions (000s) as compared to 133173 Impressions (000s) in week 10. ABP News came at the second position with 160270 Impressions (000s). Zee News sustained its third position with 138135 Impressions (000s) followed by India TV at the fourth position with 133276 Impressions (000s). India News sustained at the fifth position with 100725 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural

    Aaj Tak with an increase in ratings was at the number one position in the rural market with 81498 Impressions (000s) as compared to 62098 Impressions (000s) last week. ABP News was at the second place with 77089 Impressions (000s). Zee News grabbed the third position with 59874 Impressions (000s). India TV took the fourth place with 56024 Impressions (000s) followed by News 24 with 55739 Impressions (000s) at the fifth position.

    Hindi News Urban

    Aaj Tak with increase in ratings continued at the number one spot in the urban market with 96550 Impressions (000s). ABP News was at the second position with 83180 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 78260 Impressions (000s) followed by India TV at the fourth position with 77251 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 56347 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre with increase in ratings from 1997 Impressions (000s) last week to 2348 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1605 Impressions (000s).

  • Hindi & English News see boost in ratings

    MUMBAI: The Hindi News genre witnessed a substantial increase in ratings this week. Led by Aaj Tak, the players have seen a steep rise in their viewership. Even in the Hindi News Rural genre, the channel observed an increase in ratings except ABP. The genre continued to be dominated by Aaj Tak.

    According to week 10 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the Hindi News Urban space also saw increased ratings. The English News channels witnessed an increase in ratings, except for BBC World News. The genre was dominated by Times Now.

    In the English Business News space, players observed mixed ratings. Players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed mixed viewership this week.

    Times Now with an increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 777 Impressions (000s) this week as against 727 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television was at the second slot with 461 Impressions (000s) while NDTV 24×7 took the third position with 437 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 with 435 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 139 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 continued to dominate the genre with 736 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 412 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 93 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD was on the fourth spot with 20 Impressions (000s). BTVi took the fifth place with 17 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News

    Aaj Tak with increased ratings continued at its number one position with 133173 Impressions (000s) as compared to 116367 Impressions (000s) in week 9. India TV was at the second position with 104587 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 100652 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 95424 Impressions (000s). India News sustained at the fifth position with 74616 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural 

    Aaj Tak with an increase in ratings was at the number one position in the rural market with 62098 Impressions (000s) as compared to 56616 Impressions (000s) last week. India TV was at the second place with 46218 Impressions (000s). ABP News grabbed the third position with 43423 Impressions (000s). India News took the fourth place with 41534 Impressions (000s) followed by Zee News with 40414 Impressions (000s) at the fifth position.

    Hindi News Urban 

    Aaj Tak with increase in ratings continued at the number one spot in the urban market with 71074 Impressions (000s). Zee News was at the second position with 60237 Impressions (000s). India TV took the third position with 58368 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 51539 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 38570 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre with decrease in ratings from 2052 Impressions (000s) last week to 1997 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1456 Impressions (000s).

  • English news channels witness increased ratings, Times Now, CNBC TV 18 lead respective genres

    MUMBAI: Channels in both, English News and English Business News, genres saw a hike in their ratings this week. While Times Now continued to be the undisputed leader in the English News space, CNBC TV18 dominated the English Business News genre.

    Led by Aaj Tak, the Hindi News genre saw the entry of News Nation in the top 5 channels list while News18 India dropped out of Top 5 this week. The players witnessed mixed ratings.

    News24 too exited the Top 5 list in this week’s data making way for the entry of Zee News in the Hindi News Rural genre. In the Hindi News Urban space, News Nation made a comeback in Top 5, leading to the departure of News18 India.

    According to week 8 of Broadcast Association Research Council (BARC), players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed a substantial increase in their viewership this week.

    English News

    Times Now with a substantial increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 798 Impressions (000s) as to 580 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television was at the second slot with 498 Impressions (000s) while CNN News18 was at the third position with 404 Impressions. NDTV 24×7 with 376 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 184 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 was at the number one position with 530 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 255 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime was at the third position with 73 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 46 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD sustained at the fifth place with 16 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak with increased ratings continued at its number one position with 126940 Impressions (000s). India TV was at the second position with 101439 Impressions (000s). ABP News took the third position with 93517 Impressions (000s) followed by Zee News at the fourth position with 90197 Impressions (000s).   • Aaj Tak regains number one position in Hindi News genre

    MUMBAI: Zee News made way for the entry of News24 in the top five channels’ list in the Hindi News Rural genre in this week’s BARC India data. In the Hindi News Urban space, ABP showed up in the top five list pushing out News Nation.

    Aaj Tak regained its number one position in the Hindi News genre. All the players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed substantial decrease in their viewership this week.

    According to BARC week 6, the players in the English News and English Business News genre witnessed mixed ratings.

    Times Now with a decrease in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 580 Impressions (000s) as to 588 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television was at the second slot with 349 Impressions (000s) while CNN News18 was at the third position with 303 Impressions. NDTV 24×7 with 261 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 75 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 retained the number one position with 344 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 157 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime was at the third position with 51 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 20 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD retained the fifth place with 14 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak returned to its number one position with 113350 Impressions (000s). India TV was at the second position with 102120 Impressions (000s).     CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre with decrease in ratings from 1499 Impressions (000s) last week to 1409 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 934 Impressions (000s).

  • India TV rules Hindi News, ABP dominates Hindi Rural

    MUMBAI: India TV toppled Aaj Tak in the Hindi News genre taking the number one position. In this week’s data, India News gave way to News18 India to feature in the top five channels list.  

    Dominated by Aaj Tak, ABP entered the top 5 channels list in the Hindi News Rural space leading to the exit of News24. Meanwhile, in the Hindi News Urban genre, News Nation departed, making way for the entry of News18 in the top five players list.  

    Players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed substantial decrease in their viewership this week.

    According to week 6 of Broadcast Association Research Council (BARC), the players in the English News genre witnessed a substantial increase in the ratings except BBC. The channels in the English Business News space also observed gradual hike in their ratings.

    Times Now with an increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 588 Impressions (000s) as to 475 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television retained the second slot with 362 Impressions (000s) while CNN News18 was at the third position with 274 Impressions. NDTV 24×7 with 248 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 82 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 retained the number one position with 426 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 219 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime was at the third position with 40 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 12 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD retained the fifth place with 5 Impressions (000s).

    India TV toppled Aaj Tak taking the first place with 122421 Impressions (000s). Aaj Tak was at the second position with 115067 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 86383 Impressions (000s) followed by News18 India at the fourth position with 80478 Impressions (000s). ABP News took the fifth position with 80445 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural 

    Aaj Tak with an increase in ratings dominated the rural market with 54753 Impressions (000s) as compared to 51875 Impressions (000s) last week. India TV hoped to the second place with 52357 Impressions (000s) took the second berth. India News grabbed the third position with 42176 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the fourth place with 37949 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News with 37443 Impressions (000s) at the fifth position.

    Hindi News Urban 

    India TV with an increase in its ratings continued to stay at the number one position in the urban market with 70063 Impressions (000s). Aaj Tak was at the second position with 60313 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 48434 Impressions (000s) followed by News18 India at the fourth position with 44883 Impressions (000s). News Nation took the fifth position with 39948 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre with decrease in ratings from 1588 Impressions (000s) last week to 1499 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1001 Impressions (000s).

  • BARC Week 5: India TV tops Hindi Urban News; Aaj Tak Hindi rural news

    MUMBAI: There’s been some amount of churn in the news genre in week 5 of 2017 according to BARC’s weekly viewership data. Aaj Tak and India News were the top 2 in Hindi news rural while India TV and Aaj Tak were the numero uno and two in Hindi news urban.

    The players in the English Business News genre witnessed a substantial increase in the ratings except BTVi. CNBC -TV18 was the leader in the genre due to its coverage on the day of the Union Budget. On the Budget day, the channel towered over all English business news channels, thereby consolidating its position as the distinct leader in budget analysis for English business news viewing audience in the country.

    In the English News genre, the channels witnessed mixed ratings this week led by Times Now. According to week 4 of Broadcast Association Research Council (BARC), Aaj Tak, with a decline in its ratings, remained as the number one channel in the Hindi News space. 

    CNBC Awaaz ranked number one in the Hindi Business News genre.

    Times Now with a decrease in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 475 Impressions (000s) as to 781 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television sustained at the second slot with 266 Impressions (000s) while NDTV 24×7 hoped at the third position with 248 Impressions. CNN News18 with 236 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 99 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    CNBC TV18 with a whooping hike in the ratings was at the number one position with 1259 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 240 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime was at the third position with 81 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 21 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD sustained at the fifth place with 8 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak with decrease in ratings stood at the first spot with 110996 Impressions (000s) as to 115885 Impressions (000s). India TV was at the second position with 108581 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 89705 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 78393 Impressions (000s). India News took the fifth position with 76655 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak with a decrease in ratings dominated the rural market with 51875 Impressions (000s) as compared to 52018 Impressions (000s) last week. India News with 44907 Impressions (000s) took the second berth. India TV grabbed the third position with 44552 Impressions (000s).     India TV toppled Aaj Tak taking the number one position in the urban market with 64029 Impressions (000s). Aaj Tak was at the second position with 59121 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 52332 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 45012 Impressions (000s). News Nation took the fifth position with 39948 Impressions (000s).

    CNBC Awaaz continued at the number one position with increase ratings from 1145 Impressions (000s) last week to 1588 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1168 Impressions (000s).

    News: Channels across genres see rise in ratings, CNBC TV18 leads in viewership

    MUMBAI: The players in the English News genre witnessed a substantial increase in the ratings. Times Now remained as the undisputed leader in the English News space. Channels in the English Business News space observed a hike in the viewership led by CNBC TV18.

    According to week 4 of Broadcast Association Research Council (BARC), Aaj Tak, with a decline in its ratings, remained as the number one channel in the Hindi News space both in rural and urban markets. The other channels witnessed an increase in ratings. 

    CNBC Awaaz ranked number one in the Hindi Business News genre.

    Times Now with an increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 781 Impressions (000s) as to 699 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television sustained at the second slot with 341 Impressions (000s) while NDTV 24×7 hoped at the third position with 273 Impressions. CNN News18 with 230 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 97 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 with a hike in the ratings was at the number one position with 275 Impressions (000s) 238 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now at the second spot with 210 Impressions (000s).     News: Channels across genres see rise in ratings, CNBC TV18 leads in viewership

    MUMBAI: The players in the English News genre witnessed a substantial increase in the ratings. Times Now remained as the undisputed leader in the English News space. Channels in the English Business News space observed a hike in the viewership led by CNBC TV18.

    According to week 4 of Broadcast Association Research Council (BARC), Aaj Tak, with a decline in its ratings, remained as the number one channel in the Hindi News space both in rural and urban markets. The other channels witnessed an increase in ratings. 

    CNBC Awaaz ranked number one in the Hindi Business News genre.

    English News

    Times Now with an increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 781 Impressions (000s) as to 699 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television sustained at the second slot with 341 Impressions (000s) while NDTV 24×7 hoped at the third position with 273 Impressions. CNN News18 with 230 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 97 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
