Sheena Bora murder case hogs headlines on news channels

NEW DELHI: Even as the Sheena Bora murder case dominated prime time coverage on all television news channels consuming one third of the 8 to 10 pm slot, an interesting message was doing the rounds on WhatsApp.

Addressing some prominent anchors and heads of news channels, the message agreed that no one should die the way Bora did, but stressed that such news did not add value to the nation. After highlighting other issues that faced the nation like price rise, corruption, floods or One Rank One Pension (OROP), it ended with the line, “Government is happy that the nation’s attention is diverted as the media is not talking about the real issues.”

That said and done, the fact remains that our sensation-hungry news media, which dishes out more entertainment than some general entertainment channels (GECs) were totally taken over by this one case for over two weeks.

According to a study by CMS Media Lab, English News channels gave more coverage to the murder case compared to Hindi News channels. Sheena Murder Case coverage dispelled the myth that Hindi News channels are more sensational compared to English News channels.

CMS Media Lab analysed 15 days of coverage of six national TV news channels from 25 August to 8 September, 2015. The channels included in the study were Aaj Tak, ABP News, Zee News, DD News, CNN IBN and Times Now.

The channels carried 113 stories and 61 special programs on the Sheena Bora murder case. These six TV channels broadcast 2282 minutes (38 hours) of special programs and stories during this period. Among the monitored news channels, two English News channels – Times Now and CNN IBN – between them contributed 60 per cent of the total coverage minutes.

Times Now, which generally dwells more on political or terrorism-related stories, alone devoted 40 per cent of the total coverage time. The channel topped in the coverage by devoting 948 minutes to the case followed by CNN IBN, which allotted 424 minutes.

Among Hindi News Channels, Aaj Tak led in the coverage by giving 341 minutes, closely followed by ABP News and Zee News. Both Zee and ABP News gave equal importance by showing 268 minutes and 263 minutes of coverage respectively.

Expectedly, DD News gave the least time to the case by allotting only 36 minutes during the entire study period.

    The study shows the following:

Prime Time (8-10 PM) Coverage of Sheena Bora Murder Case

    (25 August – 8 September 2015)

One wonders if private news channels, which dwell hours on each story with endless repetitions, and create debates on stories that do not need any discussion, will learn anything the lessons of the past when channels had to admit they had made mistakes in coverage.

Perhaps the note doing the rounds on social media summed up the general message to the channels very aptly – “Focus on issues that concern us. Do not take us for a ride.”

  • ‘Citizen Journalist’ remains to be a show sans baggage: Anubha Bhonsle

‘Citizen Journalist’ remains to be a show sans baggage: Anubha Bhonsle

MUMBAI: The Press has always been considered as the fourth pillar of democracy, but in a vast country like India, the plight of citizens seldom reach the mainstream media. Almost a decade back with the mission of empowering every citizen with a platform of expression, CNN-IBN launched a show called Citizen Journalist Show (CJ). The show travelled to various nooks and corners of the country and Indians became a part of it by sharing their stories.

Acknowledging the emergence of digital years after inception, the network has decided to re-brand the show as CJ+, which will not only have a presence on television but will also be available on digital platforms. “The scrutinization will remain the same,” says CNN-IBN executive Anubha Bhonsle, adding, “The critics of the show often reverberate that as the show is now available on digital, the content’s credibility will get compromised but that’s not true. The story will still go through the same rigour, and the show’s rich legacy, authenticity in reportage will remain intact.”

CJ Show airs on the channel every Saturday. “People had to wait for the content to come on television and if they missed it, it was gone. Digital now enables viewers to see the content whenever they want and that’s something that we have achieved,” informs Bhonsle.

From 1 August, 2015 the new avatar has unfolded for the mass and the reaction has been positive asserts Bhonsle. “Considering that it has been just two weeks, I would refrain from giving numbers but yes viewership has gone up and we are expecting it to grow bigger. We want CJ+ to enhance its base, reach out to more people and tell many more stories and digital will help us achieving that goal,” she says.

“The idea of CJ+ came in because we were interested in new age story telling, where we will intersect journalists with technology and make things more digitised. But at the end of the day, we will continue to be what we were. People can still use the previous procedures that they were using to connect with us,” adds Bhonsle.

With digital innovation rolled out, the probability of rural India sharing their story multiplies. When queried about rural India, Bhonsle says, “I will not say that we received an overwhelming response from rural areas after we launched the digital platform. Rural reacts the most to word of mouth. Whenever we feature a story, we observe many talking about it. It’s early days yet so we will see how it goes.”

CJ over the years has remained a show that carried no baggage,” says Bhonsle. At a time when television news is occupied by panel discussions and high decibel debates, CJ+ comes out as a differentiator. Now it remains to be seen if the new format garners mass recognition and more importantly whether it manages to grab advertisers’ attention too in a world ruled by ad revenues.

On Twitter, CJ+ has 14.8K followers, while the Facebook page has over 15k likes.

CNN-IBN to split; Turner explores opportunity for new partner

MUMBAI: Turner Broadcasting System owned American giant CNN’s tie up with Reliance Industries’ TV18 will cease to exist, come January 2016.

Amidst speculations of various possible team ups CNN International chief commercial officer Rani Raad informs Indiantelevision.com, “The partnership ran the natural course of its agreement and a mutual decision was made to chart our own respective growth independently. We are very proud of what we have co-created with TV18 for the Indian market.”

In an official media statement Network18 Group CEO A.P. Parigi said, “The last decade has seen a lot of momentum in the Indian media industry and has been particularly exciting for us. During this time we witnessed two media houses coming together to redefine the way news is presented to a demanding audience; we at TV18 have benefited from this relationship with CNN. At the launch of the channel, TV18 was a relatively small organisation; that has changed now.  Network18 has grown from two news channels in 2005 to 17 news channels in 2015. Today, we have the largest footprint in the current affairs, regional and business news space in India.  The TV18 line-up of channels today are well established and highly regarded in this dynamic, complex and challenging environment.”

The venture is yet to come to a consensus and is currently exploring all the options. “CNN remains deeply committed to long-term participation in India, one of the world’s largest and most vibrant media markets. As is the natural course of business, we continue to explore opportunities in India and every other important market around the world. Our #1 international news brand in Asia Pacific and the rest of the world, and the winner of multiple prestigious awards, CNN International, continues to lead and serve consumers in India with the best of global news content across multi-platforms,” informs Raad.

With media reports suggesting a possible tie-up between CNN and Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), a source close to the development says, “Yes, CNN is in talks with ZMCL. But, it will be premature to say that the deal has been locked, as CNN is speaking to other players in the market as well.”

The partnership started in 2005 with CNN Turner International signing a deal with TV18 group company Global Broadcast News (GBN), which was then headed by journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. This marked the launch of CNN-IBN. Last year, Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries took total ownership of Network 18 Media which was founded by Raghav Bhal in 1993.
