    Ashu Dutt moves to ET Now

    MUMBAI: ET Now has poached Ashu Dutt from CNBC TV18, appointing him as chief consulting editor, financial markets.

    Dutt will be spearheading markets coverage between 8-10.30 am. Starting 9 March, ET Now will launch at 8 am a show titled Place your Bets with Ashu Dutt. It will have all the strategies, market news and tips you need for a profitable start to the trading day.

    ET Now senior editor financial markets Andy Mukherjee said, “We are delighted to have Dutt join us. He brings with him tremendous experience, credibility and in-depth knowledge of financial and commodity markets.”

    One of the pioneers of Indian financial television, Dutt has been an anchor, editor and financial-markets consultant over the past two decades. He has anchored shows such as Classroom, Markets Midday and Mid-Cap Radar for CNBC TV18, along with its flagship show, Bazaar Morning Call.

    Recently, ET Now appointed Manisha Gupta as commodities and currencies editor.

    “We are certain that Dutt and Gupta will take ET Now’s coverage of markets to a new high, unparalleled in Indian business television,” added Mukherjee.

    ET Now ready with clearances, to launch in June quarter

    MUMBAI: Times Global Broadcasting has received clearances from the government for its English business news channel and will be launching ET Now in the quarter ended June, says chief executive officer Chintamani Rao.

    ET Now, which will be competing with CNBC TV18, NDTV Profit and UTVi, is also looking at a content tie up. “We are working on the partnership and the announcement will be made soon,” Rao adds.

    The channel will have a staff strength of around 300-400 people and will also leverage the resources of The Economic Times newspaper.

    On weekends, the channel will bank upon more of features. “Weekend news on a business channel is a lot more features,,” Rao says, while refusing to divulge the channel’s content strategy.

    ET Now’s logo was unveiled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently at the Economic Times awards in Mumbai.

    Bloomberg UTV sends defamation notice to CNBC TV18 managing editor

    MUMBAI: Bloomberg UTV has sent a defamation notice to CNBC TV18’s managing editor Udayan Mukherjee, asking him to apologise on air for allegedly defaming the English business news channel.

    The channel, through counsel AZB Partners, accuses Mukherjee for making “inflammatory, derogatory and defamatory” statements during its segment Bazaar on 4 March.

    In its notice to Mukherjee, Bloomberg UTV has demanded Rs 5 billion as damages, for the “injury” the channel has “sustained and will continue to sustain” because of his (Mukherjee’s) “malicious acts”.

    The notice also accused Mukherjee of debasing Bloomberg UTV by saying “(Bloomberg ko) apni auqaat nahi bhoolna chahiye”.

    Mukherjee, in his show, had said that for the tenth year running, CNBC TV18 leads across all categories in the genre, and had remained the number one channel on the Budget day, based on Tam data. Earlier, Bloomberg UTV had given full page adverts and run a campaign, claiming leadership on Budget day viewership based on another monitoring agency aMap.

    Mukherjee was not available for comment till the time of filing this report.

    CNBC TV18 set to launch The Learning Curve starting 10 January

    MUMBAI: CNBC-TV18 is set to launch a five-part special series ‘The Learning Curve-D Street meets B Schools’, in which experts from Dalal Street will answer questions from students in the top Business Schools in India on investment sectors, stocks, and the future of Indian stock market through a series of interactive question-answer sessions.

    The series will be hosted by BSE member Ramesh Damani.

    The panel will comprise people like Rare Enterprises partners Rakesh Jhunjhunwala; Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd director Raamdeo Agrawal; Fortuna Capital partner Sanjoy Bhattacharyya; New Horizon Investment CEO Madhav Bhatkuly and First Global director Shankar Sharma.

    They will share their experiences with the students and will highlight their expertise on investing in stocks for maximum potential returns.

    TV18 Q2 net loss at Rs 245.57 million

    MUMBAI: TV18 has posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 245.57 million (after ESOP charge out) for the quarter ended 30 September 2008, as against a profit of Rs 49.67 million in the year ago period.

    During the quarter, the company’s income has increased from Rs 1.30 billion as compared to Rs 882.98 million in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.

    The company has taken control of the board of directors of Infomedia18 Limited on 21 August and consequently the results of Infomedia18 Limited have been consolidated for the period from 21 August to 30 September on the basis of the management control.

    TV18 MD Raghav Bahl said: “We have managed to grow our business news revenues in a very tough operating environment. That is a splendid testimony to the robust programming, audience loyalty and brand premium built by CNBC-TV18 and CNBC-Awaaz. Although operating margins have dropped from the steady 50 per cent seen during the preceding bull market, we are satisfied by the fact that we have managed to hold around the 40 per cent mark, and have grown both our revenues and operating margins compared to the previous quarter. We hope to maintain the current performance of our business news operations for the rest of the year.”

    Net profit (after Esop charge out) from news operations of the company, which include CNBC TV18 and CNBC Awaaz, has slipped to Rs 76.06 million in the second quarter of this fiscal, from Rs 156.93 million in the prior year quarter.

    Revenue from news operations has seen a downfall to Rs 808.23 million, from Rs 735.05 million in the year ago period.

    Newswire18’s net loss stood at Rs 40.26 million in the second quarter. Revenue from Newswire18 has seen a growth of 107 per cent to stand at Rs 51.20 million, from Rs 24.69 million in the year ago period. It is planning to distribute terminals in overseas market.

    Infomedia’s net loss stood at Rs 1.10 million while revenue earned from operations is Rs 290.48 million.
