Zee Media’s WION opts for Dalet unified news solution

MUMBAI: Computing and creative technologies aid workflow, storage and infrastructure solutions for all aspects of the media and content creation industry. IT solutions providers help with latest computing, networking, media hardware and software to provide the best output.

Specialised companies bring extensive product knowledge and world-class engineering to industry. Installation of video servers enables content producers and journalists to upload content from the field directly to the broadcaster’s customised Content Management System (CMS), an action that automatically creates planning events.

Dalet Digital Media System recently announced that the youngest venture of Zee Media Corporation World Is One News (WION) has utilised Dalet Unified News Operations. Dalet solution is powering and supporting the international news channel with comprehensive media logistics, newsroom computer system and news production workflow facilitated by the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) and orchestration platform, with full ingest and playout operations relying on Dalet Brio video servers.

WION delivers news coverage from across the globe with a South Asian perspective to the international audience across the web, mobile devices and TV. Operated by Zee with headquarters in India and bureaux in 37 global locations, WION is the first India-based network to have a presence in the U.K., U.S., China, Russia and Africa, making it south Asia’s first truly convergent, multi-media English news network.

A critical aspect of the installation for WION was to enable journalists and producers to upload content from the field directly to the broadcaster’s customized Content Management System (CMS), an action that automatically creates planning events thanks to the Dalet Unified News Operations collaborative workflow.

“Our philosophy of ‘being one with the world’ holds that news is the common thread that binds us all together and makes critical the ability to deliver news in the moment, from anywhere to any channel,” says WION editor-in-chief Rohit Gandhi. “We sought and found a partner in Dalet to provide the backbone to our network-wide news infrastructure. The solution not only accelerates time to air but enables better collaboration with a highly efficient and agile set of tools, from remote content creation to centralized content curation and onwards to publication on the digital and TV platforms our audiences are choosing.”

WION is the first broadcaster in India to deploy the Dalet Galaxy-based Unified News Operations workflow.

Easy-to-use production tools via web-based Dalet WebSpace and relevant story content are readily available to every user in the newsroom and in the field. When WION journalists receive a notification about an assignment, they can search, browse and access every asset in the Dalet platform from their desktop, laptop or mobile device, whether it is news wires and footage that just came in, or existing stories and video packages. Beyond the walls of the newsroom, WION journalists use the Dalet On-the-Go mobile app to check assignments and create packages, exporting content to the CMS, as well as to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Video and scripts can be logged and edited within Dalet OneCut, or sent to Adobe Premiere via Dalet Xtend for craft editing. Media and associated metadata are tracked and managed by Dalet Galaxy every step of the way, including playlist export and import to and from the CMS. Once approved by a producer, final content is readily available for use in the built-in production control room automation and exported to the CMS as a multimedia story object.

Beyond the comprehensive set of tools and services natively built into Dalet Galaxy, the advanced web-services API integrates and unifies the full ecosystem of technologies and in-house tools used at Zee WION, including the custom CMS based on Kentico that drives workflows within the Dalet solution. Other integrations include WINBDL teleprompter, WASP graphics system and Quantum SNFS with NetApp E series storage.

“This installation is a perfect example of the Dalet Unified News Operations solution. Having the NRCS, the production tools and the archives fully integrated, along with a flexible workflow engine and web-services API, enables WION to truly implement a ‘digital first’ approach to deliver the right content, on the right device, to the right audience, ahead of the competition,” says Dalet Asia Pacific general manager Raoul Cospen. “Deployed in record time, the end-to-end workflow was on air within a few short weeks of signing the contract for Dalet Unified News Operations.”

Savdhaan India launches it’s new season of Savdhaan India

MUMBAI: Life OK’s flagship series Savdhaan India has received tremendous love and respect from the viewers in the last 4 years. In this journey, it has not only alerted citizens against crime and but has also given them the strength and motivation to face crime. In addition to showcasing real life incidents, the show has also advanced to acknowledging brave hearts who chose to fight against crime through Samman Awards.

Savdhaan India is all set to start its new season with a hard-hitting avatar. The new season’s philosophy – ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ urges the citizens to break their prevailing attitude of letting things be, of letting the powerful get away with crime, of not speaking up out of fear and face crime head on. As a brand that has always believed in walking the talk, Savdhaan India took the campaign on ground across the country and interacted with the citizens of Delhi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad

The campaign began at the capital city Delhi where the ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ anthem along with the pledge movement was unveiled for the very first time. In the next leg of the campaign, the anchors visited notorious crime locations and interacted with the citizens there. SarkhejGandhinagar Highway in Ahmedabad and PatrakarpuramChauraha in Lucknow were visited as hit and run cases and eve-teasing incidents are very prevalent in these locations respectively.

Savdhaan India has always acknowledged the youth to be change agents. Hence, following the visit to the crime locations, the team of Savdhaan India visited schools and colleges. The hosts invited the students to become partners in this attitudinal revolution. The students using a palm scanner digitally pledged their support. The hosts discussed youth related issues like eve teasing, ragging, bullying and cybercrime. At HK College in Ahmedabad many students shared harrowing experiences of being bullied and eve-teased and how they fought it. While in CMS, Gomtinagar – the students and the hosts had a very relevant discussion on how to protect oneself on social media.

A picture lasts forever and with that thought – the team of Savdhaan India created a huge pledge wall in these 3 cities. All those who were a part of this initiative clicked a picture of themselves against the wall to remind themselves of the pledge they took. More than 1000 pictures were collected. Lastly, the hosts felicitated the bravehearts who narrated their own stories of facing crime fearlessly thereby taking the of initiative ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ to life.

uCoz, the leading free website builder from Europe, launches in India

MUMBAI: uCoz, the leading free website builder in Europe, announces the launch of a new localization. Starting with November 2013, the renowned system for creating free websites is available for Indian users under a local domain uCoz.in. This gives the opportunity for the local Internet users to create modern and fully customizable websites, using a .ucoz.in free subdomain name, provided by uCoz.

“We strive to give our best response to the rapid growth of the internet usage in the emerging markets, and a significant part of these demands are coming from India. Besides, by providing a strong solution in the field of free website creation we want to be the number one choice for individuals and companies who want to sell products online, using our competitive e-commerce solution.” said Evgeny Kurt, uCoz’s CEO.

At the moment the platform is available in 16 languages and has about 1.2 million active websites. Currently standing in Alexa’s Top 250 websites on the Internet, uCoz wants to achieve with this strategy for the Indian market the same success it attained in Eastern Europe, in countries such as Russia, Ukraine or Romania.

“We understand that we can make our services more convenient and closer to the users by providing versions in different languages and, therefore, building strong local communities. This will have a positive impact on the quantity and quality of sites, created by the Indian users. It will be a great change for them, as well as for the small and medium enterprises, which can have now their own self manageable website, developed with professional quality.” said Kurt.

uCoz can be used to create different types of web projects such as blogs, forums, fan sites, company websites and online stores. Company plans to soon launch in Hindi as an operating language, it is already offering its services in English. Launched in 2005, uCoz’s Content Management System (CMS) became popular due to its simplicity and functionality for users just entering the world of website development. With over eight years of operation, the platform is now considered the starting point for a whole generation of webmasters and web developers.

  • Tewari reaffirms his support for extension of ad cap implementation

Tewari reaffirms his support for extension of ad cap implementation

NEW DELHI: The news channels have found a big supporter to push their demand for an extension in the implementation of ad cap. And this comes from none other than Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari himself. In a statement made today, the minister has reinstated his support for the news channels and asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to extend the time frame for news channels to implement the 12 minute ad-cap.

“TRAI can give the news channels an extension at least till the final phase of digitisation is complete,” said Tewari who was addressing a symposium on News Media Education in India organised by CMS Academy at the India International Centre in New Delhi.

“The regulator can seriously look into some of the issues which the news channels have raised and see if they can give them a road map which is synchronous with digitisation, so that we can have a seamless implementation of both digitisation and the statutory remit.”

Tewari questions if we have freedom of the press or freedom of the owner of the press

Tewari commented that apart from protecting consumer interest, TRAI should also look at the industry situation so that downsizing does not become the rule rather than the exception. He said manufacturing Set Top Boxes (STBs) “is not rocket science” and digitisation has been a “huge missed opportunity” for the medium and small scale industry. He said Indian industry should utilise the opportunity of providing STBs for third and fourth phase of digitisation.

The minister in his address not only spoke in the favour of the news channels but also took a dig at the current media scenario. Commenting on last week’s lay off by a television news channel and the legal recourse against the Wage Board recommendations for the print media by one of the promoters he said, “Media is a business today.”

Tewari also said that there was a need to reflect on whether it is a business as defined under the Indian constitution or any other activity – a “question germane to the media.” He was referring to over 300 job cuts that include some of the well known names, in a news channel last week.

The minister said the rights of the citizens and the rights of the media barons “fall in different tracks with the twain not destined to meet.”

Describing the question as a classic chicken and egg situation, Tewari commented that the “Conundrum bedevilling the media landscape today in India is – Do we have freedom of the press or freedom of the owner of the press?” He hoped media professionals would “introspect” on the issue.

Commenting on the challenges faced by the print, broadcasting and new media (internet) he said, “The challenges are unique, distinct and require different treatment.” He further stated that it was time for the print media, which has more or less tried to keep rates low over the years, to “reflect and rationalise tariffs.”

He said the heavily advertisement-dependent model of newspapers was “not the way forward” and called for “serious introspection” in the print media on how far the advertisement model can sustain them.

On the broadcasting sector, he said of the 798-odd channels, 415 are news channels, and they too are “hugely” dependant on advertisements for revenue. “This has led to addiction of sensationalism, manufactured anger and media trials,” the minister added. The situation leads to violation of privacy and that the issue needs to be addressed.

Tewari also said his ministry had sent a proposal to the law ministry to incorporate provisions against paid news in the Press and Registration of Books (PRB) Act, providing for penal provisions. He said it was proposed that paid news would be made an offence which would have provisions of penalty and suspension of license.

He said the media industry should consider holding a common exam for journalists, on the lines of that conducted by the Bar Council, after which they could be given licence to pursue the profession.

“A good starting point would be that rather than prescribing a curriculum which is then standardised across institutions, possibly the media industry could think about at least having a common exam.”

Tewari said there were good institutions to train journalists, but there were also “fly-by-night” operators in the media education sector “Professionals from diverse fields would not resent the idea of a common exam.”

Press Council of India Chairperson Justice (Retd) Markandey Katju had earlier raised the demand for minimum qualifications for journalists.

  • India sets up nationwide inspection programmes

India sets up nationwide inspection programmes

MUMBAI: India has launched a wide-ranging surveillance programme that will give its security agencies and even income tax officials the ability to tap directly into e-mails and phone calls without oversight by courts or parliament, several sources said.

The expanded surveillance in the world‘s most populous democracy, which the government says will help safeguard national security, has alarmed privacy advocates at a time when allegations of massive US digital snooping beyond American shores have set off a global rumpus.

The Central Monitoring System (CMS) was announced in 2011 but there has been no public debate and the government has said little about how it will work or how it will ensure that the system is not abused.

The government started to quietly roll the system out state by state in April this year, according to government officials. Eventually it will be able to target any of India‘s 900 million landline and mobile phone subscribers and 120 million Internet users.

Officials said making details of the project public would limit its effectiveness as a stealthy intelligence-gathering tool.

“Security of the country is very important. All countries have these surveillance programmes,” said a senior telecommunications ministry official, defending the need for a large-scale eavesdropping system like CMS.

“You can see terrorists getting caught, you see crimes being stopped. You need surveillance. This is to protect you and your country,” said the official, who is directly involved in setting up the project.

The new system will allow the government to listen to and tape phone conversations, read e-mails and text messages, monitor posts on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn and track searches on Google of selected targets, according to interviews with two other officials involved in setting up the new surveillance programme, human rights activists and cyber experts.

Security agencies will no longer need to seek a court order for surveillance or depend, as they do now, on Internet or telephone service providers to give them the data, the government officials said.
