    Clint Eastwood to direct film on heroic pilot Chesley Sullenberger

    MUMBAI: Clint Eastwood will helm Warner Bros. Pictures’ as-yet-untitled drama about the life of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who became an American hero when he landed his disabled jet on the Hudson River,saving the lives of everyone aboard.

     

    Eastwood will direct the film from a screenplay by Todd Komarnicki, based on the book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. The film is being produced by Eastwood and Tim Moore, for Malpaso; Frank Marshall, under the Kennedy/Marshall banner; and Allyn Stewart, for Flashlight Films. Flashlight’s Kipp Nelson and RatPac-Dune’s Steven Mnuchin are serving as executive producers.

     

    Warner Bros. Pictures president, creative development and worldwide production Greg Silverman said, “Simply put, Clint Eastwood is at the top of his game, not to mention a global treasure.On the heels of his extraordinary work in American Sniper, it is tremendously exciting to see him explore the life of another captivating true-life hero.It is also great to be collaborating with Frank Marshall and Allyn Stewart to produce this compelling script by Todd Komarnicki.”

     

    The film will go beyond Sullenberger’s almost impossible and much-heralded achievement of safely landing a jumbo jet on the water, which was captured on video and viewed around the world.But behind the scenes, a drama was unfolding that could have cost him his reputation and his wings.

     

    Sullenberger said, “I am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall.The project could not have found a better home than Warner Bros. Pictures. This is truly a dream team.”

    First trailer of Bradley Cooper starring ‘American Sniper’ Released

    MUMBAI: Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, the first trailer for the war drama American Sniper was released on 3 October.

     

    The actor stars as real-life Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in American Sniper, who served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and was heavily decorated for his service, has taken credit for 160 confirmed kills. The drama is based on the 2013 memoir of Chris Kyle, who was regarded as ‘the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.’

     

    Kyle, whose book was a best-seller, was shot and killed at a Texas gun range in February 2013. He was 38 years old.

     

    The official synopsis of the movie says, “From director Clint Eastwood comes “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.  But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.  U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms.  His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname ‘Legend’.  However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents.  He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world.  Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the SEAL creed to ‘leave no man behind’.  But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.”

     

    Co-starring Sienna Miller, Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahan and Keir O’Donnell, American Sniper opens in limited release on Christmas Day and goes wide on 16 January 2015. The movie has been produced by Cooper.

     

    The trailer highlights the precarious balance Kyle faces as he balances his military duties with his home life.

    The movie is slated to release on Christmas this year.

     

    Cooper, who voiced Rocket Racoon in the summer blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, has received past Academy Award nominations for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.

    MUMBAI: Clint Eastwood is in talks to direct Jersey Boys.
     
    Based on the popular and acclaimed stage show with a script by John Logan, Jersey Boys tells the musical tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, from their rise to fame to their eventual split.
     
    The film was originally developed by GK Films at Columbia Pictures before Graham King, the founder of GK Films, got it moved to Warner Bros in 2012. Then, Jon Favreau was attached to direct the film.
     
    Actors like John Magaro, Dominic Cooper, Vincent Piazza, Paul Dano and James Badge Dale were on the list of the probables to be attached with the film but Favreau wanted to go with smaller names in the lead while the studio wanted some faces that would help justify the budget.

    MUMBAI: Clint Eastwood‘s daughter Francesca has got her first major role in Final Girl that is to be directed by her boyfriend Tyler Shields.
    The 18-year-old is now set to embark on a tough training regimen to prepare for the shoot that is set to begin in Vancouver, Canada later this year.
    “I am beyond excited to be working with Abigail Breslin and it is such a dream to make a movie with Tyler Shields. His vision for this film is going to blow people away. I start my fight training next week and we start shooting in November. I can‘t wait for everyone to see Final Girl!,” she has reportedly said.
    Sheilds has already signed actress Abigail Breslin for the thriller that is about a group of teenage boys who pick on the wrong girl as their last victim to initiate into their pack, it is understood.
    Francesca previously appeared on the big screen alongside her father in the 1999 made film True Crime.

    Warner Bros. to release J Edgar on 20 January

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures will release Leonardo DiCaprio starrer J. Edgar on 20 January.

    Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film explores the personal and public life and relationships of a man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it during a life devoted to his own idea of justice.

    Edgar Hoover was one of the most powerful men in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. He was a man who placed great value on secrets and was as guarded in his private life as he was in his public one, allowing only a small and protective inner circle into his confidence.

    The film also stars Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas and Judi Dench.

    J. Edgar has been produced by Eastwood, Brian Grazer and Robert Lorenz, with Tim Moore and Erica Huggins serving as executive producers.

    Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ in Oscar race

    MUMBAI: Nominations for the 79th Academy Awards were announced yesterday. It is likely that Star Movies’ ratings for the show, which it will air on 26 February, will be higher than last year.

    That is because Deepa Mehta’s Water is competing in the foreign film category.

    The film deals with the plight of widows in India in the 1930s and was submitted by Canada. It stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas. The film was not allowed to be shot in India. The favourite to win the foreign language film award though is Pan’s Labyrinth from Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. Mongrel Media and Fox Searchlight, which released Water in Canada and 57 other countries, including the UK and Denmark, have, in the past few months, launched a nomination campaign in Hollywood to attract the attention of the Academy.

    Best director is once again a fight between veterans Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorcese. Eastwood made two great second world war films Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. He has ben nominated for the latter film which tells the story of the battle at Iwo Jima from Japan’s perspective. It has Japanese subtitles.

    The former releases in India tomorrow 25 January and tells the story from America’s perspective. Scorcese has been nominated for the gangster film The Departed. Two years back Eastwood won for Million Dollar Baby beating Scorcese who had been nominated for The Aviator.

    Best picture is less clear. Dreamgirls which had been considered the favourite has not been nominated for best film though it got a leading eight nominations. Besides the films of Eastwood and Scorcese the other films competing for best picture are The Queen about the two weeks following Princes Diana’s death, the global film Babel which has five languages and the comedy Little Miss Sunshine. There is no front runner.

    Star World focusses on ‘Hollywood Shootouts’, Christmas next month

    MUMBAI: English general entertainment channel Star World will during the yuletide season next month focus on Christmas as well as on a new show Hollywood Shootouts.

    Hollywood Shootouts will air every Sunday from next month at 5 pm. Two of Hollywood’s big shots – Variety editor Peter Bart and producer Peter Guber – take on some of moviedom’s biggest movers and shakers: top actors, directors, producers and studio executives who make Hollywood what it is today.

    The show gets behind the hype and into the minds of some of entertainment’s most elusive and fascinating personalities. Names to watch for include Dustin Hoffman, Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson and Harvey Weinstein.

    The two hosts have attracted critical acclaim for complementing each other perfectly as two sides of the Hollywood coin. The A-list guests are willing to discuss their careers with frankness.
    All the episodes revolve around the general topic of surviving and thriving in Hollywood. However the varied guests shape each episode according to their individual identities.

    Since next month is the time to spread good cheer the channel will air the special Christmas Miracles on 19 December at 8 pm, 20 December at 11 amand on 24 December at 9 am. Celebrities Halle Berry, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Melissa Joan Hart and Richard Karn serve as first-time Santa’s helpers by fulfilling the wishes of children and their families, from specially selected letters that were written to Santa and found in the “dead letter” bins at the U.S. Postal Service.

    Also showcased are stories by everyday people who have, in some way, been miraculously touched at Christmas time. Some of the soul-warming highlights include: Melissa Joan Hart and the cast of Sabrina The Teenage Witch fulfilling a young girl’s Christmas wish to experience what it’s like to be an actress. Jennifer Love Hewitt redecorates a young boy’s bedroom and presents him with the gift of his dreams – his very first bed.

    Halle Berry helps a nine-year-old boy create a better Christmas for a group of less-fortunate children with a surprise visit from Santa Claus. And Richard Karn uses his “Home Improvement” skills to create a yard filled with snow for a young girl who dreamt of having a “white Christmas”.

    On Christmas Eve 24 December at 1 pm the channel will air a classic film The Man Upstairs. It is about the unlikely relationship that grows between Victoria (Katherine Hepburn) – an elegant, lonely reclusive, and a fast-talking fugitive, Moony Polanski (Ryan O’Neal), who she finds hiding in her attic one day. It is a story about how love and life can be found in the strangest places, Ryan soon finds the family he never had in Victoria, while the older woman’s loneliness disappears with his presence.

    But idyllic though this life is, it couldn’t stay the same with Moony’s checkered past haunting them. The climax is played out on Christmas Eve, where the two celebrate over a true-blue Christmas tree, only to find out that more than just presents are waiting for them.

    The channel has also lined up a slew of episodes of its comedy shows that have the Christmas theme. These will air on 24 December from 3 pm and on Christmas Day 25 December from 8:30 am onwards. An episode of Scrubs that will air is called My Own Personal Jenus. While his friends don’t really feel like celebrating ther birth of Jesus, Turk makes a huge deal about it. But his faith and happiness are gone after a very busy night at the hospital. Dr. Cox has J.D. videotape the birth of the child of one of his friends.

    In the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond called The Thought That Count Robert gives Ray a great idea on what to get Debra for Christmas, but he isn’t very happy when Ray takes all the credit for it.

    An episode of Just Shoot Me is called Christmas? Christmas!. In the episode of Still Standing
    Judy is excited to host Christmas in the Miller house for the first time, but her plans are scrapped when Bill’s mom insists on having Christmas dinner for the entire family in her tiny apartment. Meanwhile, Linda’s good deed for Christmas – making over her helpless co-worker – goes better than planned.

    Even The Simpsons get into the holiday spirit. In the episode Tis The Fifteen Season the Simpson family goes Christmas shopping at the Springfield Heights Promenade, where the rich people shop. Homer spends the remaining portion of his share of the money for a gift for himself (a personalised talking astrolabe) and has no money left to buy the family a nice Christmas tree.

    Marge and the kids find out what he’s spent the money on and are disappointed in him. Spending the night on the couch, Homer watches “Mr. McGrew’s Christmas Carol” and the story works its magic on Homer, and Homer wakes with resolve to be good and unselfish.

    In the Malcolm In The Middle episode called Christmas Tree Hal and the boys begin selling Christmas trees, but every time that they are about to gain money for actually doing it, something unexpected happens. At the ranch, Francis and Piama are reminded of home when Otto’s relatives come to stay at the ranch, while Lois recruits the help of vagabonds in order to find a squirrel that bit Craig, to confirm if it has rabies.
