  • Pogo and Cartoon Network spruce up on-ground activities

Pogo and Cartoon Network spruce up on-ground activities

MUMBAI: If you thought on-ground activation was the exclusive domain of big television channels, think again.

Niche channels like Pogo and Cartoon Network too are engaged in strengthening direct connect with audiences, in this case – kids.

A case in point is the School Contact Programs (SCP) conducted annually by these two channels from the Turner India stable.

This time round, Pogo’s SCP, spanning July to September, targeted around 500 schools in eight cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Ludhiana and Chennai. The program saw the kids’ most loved character Chhota Bheem conduct Bheem’s Masti Ki Class across schools. Children were educated about issues like hygiene, internet security, team work and traffic signals through interactive games. The medium of instruction was Tamil in Chennai, Gujarati in Ahmedabad and so on. At the end of these sessions, students took home goodies and sponsor samples. Each activity lasted approximately three hours and touched nearly 900 students per school. Students from standards one to eight participated, sans their parents.

Says Turner International India senior director and network head Krishna Desai: “These SCPs provide an excellent platform to build a bridge between kids and their favourite channels and characters. Valuable lessons are imparted to kids in an entertaining format with branded games, activities and prizes. In addition, our advertisers also get a direct platform for their target audiences.”

Bheem’s Masti Ki Class was presented by Knorr Soupy Noodles, powered by Parle G, with associate sponsors including Honda, Dabur Hajmola Anardana, ICICI Prudential and TAT-O.

“Metros provide the necessary number of schools and students to help us achieve our goals,” adds Desai.

The theme of Cartoon Network’s SCP this year was Go Active Move It Movement based on tips and games to keep kids fit and active. The program featured several popular characters like Kris (from Roll No. 21) and Tom, Jerry and Oggy (from Oggy and the Cockroaches). The SCP was presented by Parle G, powered by Alpenliebe Juzt Jelly, with associate sponsors including Dabur Real Juice, Dabur Red Toothpaste, Hero Cycles & Yellow Diamond Chips.

Green Gold plans 50 more stores

Mumbai: Green Gold Animation, creators of Chhota Bheem & Mighty Raju, are expanding their exclusive licensing and merchandising division, Green Gold Store. It plans to implement the expansion plans with a wide variety of tie-ups and franchising support across India.

“With a viewership of over 40 million children, Chhota Bheem is by far the biggest ‘Toon Icon’ in India. For the first time we have a desi animation character that can be merchandized and monetized. The demand for Chhota Bheem & Mighty Raju merchandize among children is considerable and rising exponentially,” said Green Gold Stores head Sudeesh Varma.

Besides Chhota Bheem & Mighty Raju, it also owns other hit brands like Krishna Balram, Luv Kush and Chorr Police. To keep these properties as popular as ever Green Gold Animation opened its first exclusive Green Gold Store at Hyderabad in 2011.  “From two outlets and a line of merchandise that numbered just ten products, we have grown to become a twenty seven store company with over two hundred products within just two years. By the end of this financial year we hope to open another twenty three stores, taking the total tally to fifty. The key objective behind retail and franchise development is to diversify the portfolio and connect with consumers; especially the diehard Chhota Bheem fan in big and small cities,” adds Varma.

With a new product line being introduced, the company is looking forward to make inroads into exciting merchandise, which will pave way into newer markets and expand footprints in the smaller centers. “The Toy & Merchandise industry in India is largely dominated by the unorganized sector. But the trend is shifting. According to industry estimates, the Licensing & Merchandising is a $ 225 to $ 300 million industry in India and growing at the rate of 20% to 25% annually.  We are optimistic about expanding the overall product range and building on it,” said vice president – sourcing & licensing Madhav Prabhala.

The company is also looking at churning out more animated movies, which has been looked as a key revenue generator for the company. “Apart from new products and exciting merchandise, we are already working on our next big release. This time it will be a Mighty Raju special to be released in May 2014 and is titled ‘Might Raju Rio Calling’. You can expect some jazzy merchandise to be introduced at our Green Gold Stores, based on the movie theme”, said Green Gold executive director Samir Jain.

Watch out for Hyderabads animation booth at Mipcom

other states may do well to borrow a leaf from the Andhra Pradesh government, which is partly sponsoring the participation of Hyderabad’s animation industry at this year’s Mipcom.

More specifically, the AP government is funding the stand fees for two Hyderabad-based companies – Green Gold Animation and Discreet Art.

“The government is partly funding our participation at the event. And this goes up to 50 per cent of the total stand fee. It can go up beyond 50 per cent depending on the response we get,” informs Green Gold Animation vice president -business development Govinda Talluri.

Creator of the popular animated character, Chhota Bheem, Green Gold Animation, has been participating in Mipcom since 2007. “Though we didn’t go in 2011-2012, this year, since the Andhra Pradesh government decided to support the companies based in Hyderabad for events like Mipcom, we, along with Discreet Arts and 20 (approximately) people from the AVCGI association will represent AP at Mipcom this year,” adds Talluri.

We will be targeting European and South American countries at Mipcom, says Green Gold Animation vice president -business development Talluri

AVCGI or Animation, VFX, Comic & Gaming Industry of AP is a recently formed association by the animation industry in Hyderabad with the aim of garnering support from the AP government for its proper functioning.

Apart from Chhota Bheem, which is Green Gold’s biggest property, it will also take other animated characters Mighty Raju and Arjun to Mipcom. “We plan to come up with a theatrical for Mighty Raju by next year and so, will use Mipcom to create a buzz about the movie. Also Arjun, a show that we have created for Disney, will form part of our offering to buyers,” says Talluri.

For all these years, Green Gold catered to Indian and South East Asian markets and recently sold its content to USA and Canada. The major is now aiming at European countries like France, Germany, Spain and South America. “This is not an exhaustive list, we want to reach out to as many markets as possible,” adds Talluri.

Enthused by the government’s support, Green Gold aims to present its library of 8,500 minutes of original content to a global audience. “Also, with our 174-episode Chhota Bheem being sold to eight countries, we would definitely want to expand our reach and get noticed,” says Talluri.

With the largest content sale market cum conference just 15 days away, the company is busy scheduling meetings with buyers. “Though a few meetings have already been fixed, we are also pitching in for more buyers,” he says. The company will primarily target television as the preferred platform. “Once we are there, getting to other platforms will not be difficult,” he rounds off.
