Reigning champions MI to take on CSK when IPL 2021 resumes on 19 Sep

New Delhi: Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on Chennai Super Kings on 19 September when the much-awaited edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 resumes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The cricket league was suspended mid-way after a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases breached the bio-bubble, and infected a few players and support staff.

“The 14th season, which was postponed in May this year in the wake of the pandemic, will resume on 19 September in Dubai with a blockbuster clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians,” said the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) in its latest announcement.

A total number of 31 matches will be played over a period of 27 days including seven doubles headers (five were held in India). In all, 13 matches will be held in Dubai, 10 in Sharjah and 8 in Abu Dhabi.

“There will be seven double headers (five matches already played in India – total of 12 matches) with the first match starting at 3:30PM IST (2:00PM Gulf Standard Time). All evening matches will start at 7:30PM IST (6:00PM Gulf Standard Time),” added BCCI.

This year, the official broadcaster Star Sports had also made arrangements to live broadcast the IPL 2021 in eight different languages, and arranged a new virtual set and a myriad of augmented reality graphics to impress audiences who remained under lockdown when the tournament began in April.

The final league game will be played between RCB and Delhi Capitals on 8 October.

  • IPL 2021: MI-CSK game becomes the most-watched midseason match

IPL 2021: MI-CSK game becomes the most-watched midseason match

KOLKATA: What does India love to watch? Cricket, especially the Indian Premier League (IPL) which continues to remain top of the chart. Despite being suspended mid-way due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, the 14th edition of the league managed to create new viewership records.

With 11.2 billion minutes, the MI-CSK game on … became the most-watched IPL mid-season match ever (in BARC history). This match also became the most-watched match of the entire season. This is in addition to IPL 2021 surpassing the overall reach of 367 million versus 357 million in 2020.

Mumbai Indians (MI) had pulled off a nail-biting win, which was also their fourth victory of the season as they beat table-toppers Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by four wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The growth in numbers is a testament to the faithful fan following that IPL enjoys and the continuous effort by Star and Disney to innovate and grow the league each year.

Star India network garnered a cumulative reach of 352 million in the first 26 matches of IPL 2021 compared to 349 million in the corresponding number of matches in IPL 2020 (Source – BARC TG: 2+U+R).

The opening match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore also received a tremendous response, bigger than opening matches of all other IPL editions held previously other than Dream11 IPL 2020 and 42 per cent higher than the edition in 2019.

  • IPL 2021 suspended as more players, team staff test Covid positive

IPL 2021 suspended as more players, team staff test Covid positive

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for the time being after several players and support staff reportedly contracted Covid2019.

“The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind,” said a statement issued by the BCCI after an urgent meeting with the IPL governing council.

“These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times,” it added.

The governing body for cricket in India went on to say that it will do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all the participants in IPL 2021.

The decision comes close on the heels of Monday’s match between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) being postponed after KKR bowlers Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for Covid2019.

According to a report by Sportstar, the decision was taken after Amit Mishra and Wriddhiman Saha too tested positive on Tuesday. Multiple BCCI officials and the franchises have confirmed the development to media publications.

Reports stated that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had informed the BCCI that the team won’t play its upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals in New Delhi on Wednesday after two members of its squad, bowling coach L Balaji, and a bus cleaner tested Covid positive.

Many Australian players have left the IPL early amidst the second Covid wave tearing through India.

The development is sure to throw a spanner in the plans of broadcaster Star Sports and the brands who had sought to capitalise on the league’s incredible popularity and reach.

After a season abroad due to the Covid pandemic, the IPL had returned to India for its fourteenth season and a bio bubble was set up to ensure the safety of players, team staff, crew and other people involved in the league’s execution. However, the bio bubble has proved to be less than infallible as Covid positive cases were detected within even before the tournament kicked off on April 9. Now, after almost a month and millions of new cases reported, the deadly virus has pierced the bubble. With multiple infected persons cropping up across teams since last week, the fate of IPL 2021 hangs in the balance.

  • Brand IPL value takes its first tumble in six years: Report

Brand IPL value takes its first tumble in six years: Report

MUMBAI: So the pandemic did leave its mark – rather a financial dent – on Brand IPL, similar to that on other businesses and the overall economy. The value of the IPL ecosystem has fallen by 3.6 per cent to Rs 45,800 crore post-2020 season, according to a brand valuation report by Duff & Phelps. In 2019, the IPL commanded a brand value of Rs 47,500 crore, which had grown seven per cent over the previous year.

The fall in brand value was largely due to Vivo pulling out of the title sponsorship deal, additional costs involved to create a secure bio-bubble environment etc. IPL 2020 matches were played behind closed doors, effectively impacting the in-stadia revenues, including gate receipts and food and beverages, the report said. The individual franchisees have also witnessed a reduction in their brand values over the last year, Duff & Phelps said on Wednesday releasing the seventh edition of its valuation report on IPL. This was largely attributed to reduced franchisee-related sponsorship revenue, loss of gate receipts, reduced food and beverage (F&B) revenue, and certain teams’ on-field performances and off-the-field issues.

Though one of the key franchises, the Reliance Group-owned Mumbai Indians has retained the top spot in the brand rankings for the fifth consecutive year, at a brand value of Rs 761.0 crore, it is nevertheless down 5.9 per cent from 2019. Chennai Super Kings saw its brand value fall the most, by 16.5 per cent year-on-year, to Rs 611 crore in 2020, while that of Delhi Capitals’ dropped the least, by one per cent to Rs 370 crore, the report said.

“The standalone franchisee brands have seen their brand values decrease as the pre-Covid-19 sponsorship deals were reduced by 15-20 per cent before the start of the tournament, predominantly because there were no ‘meet and greet’ events with players; and there were no free tickets in stadiums,” Duff & Phelps India external advisor Santosh N was quoted as saying in the report.

However, with people forced to spend time at home, there was an increase in IPL television viewership making the 2020 edition a huge success for broadcasters as it broke viewership and advertising revenue records. "Television ratings skyrocketed and advertisers tapped into this opportunity to scale up their brand image. Despite the challenging year, this momentum is indicative of how strong the IPL brand has become," observed Santosh.

With the economy opening and virus infections decreasing, sponsorship deals are expected to be back to the pre-pandemic levels. Also, an increase in the number of teams in 2022 and the renewal of media rights in 2023 will enhance the IPL ecosystem value in the future, he added.

Furthermore, with Vivo back as the title sponsor of the T20 league this year, things are already beginning to look up. In 2020, IPL 13 had seen lower sponsorship revenue compared to 2019 as the IPL had signed up Dream 11 as title sponsor for Rs 222 crore for one season, as against the Rs 440 crore per year they had been getting from Vivo.

The list of sponsors who want to be associated with the Indian Premier League is only growing season after season, and the fourteenth season of the tournament promises to be no different.
