  • Want to woo youngsters? Depend on youth channels

Want to woo youngsters? Depend on youth channels

MUMBAI: In-branding is not unusual today as we see superstars selling the brands they endorse even in their films. Remember Chennai Express and how Shah Rukh Khan endorsed the features of the new Nokia mobile (of which he is also a brand ambassador) in the film. And if you thought it was just him, then you are wrong. Hrithik Roshan starrer Krrish 3 had a host of FMCG products being promoted through the movie.

The phenomenon has not spared the small screen as well. Right from the brands to film stars, the small screen has become a popular destination for promotion. However, this time around there is a twist.

With the nation gearing for the upcoming elections, the political parties are doing all that they can to get voters to get inked. This election season the parties are finding innovative ways to connect with the audiences, especially the youth. And if you watch Channel V India, a youth entertainment channel, you would know what we are hinting at.

The main characters of various shows on the channel can be seen talking about how prices have risen in the past years or how it is the time to bring change. This, while a ticker/astrix runs with BJP’s symbol and message.

The political parties – Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) – both in their mission to woo the first-time voters are now targeting youth channels.

“Youth channels are the best way to catch the attention of first-time voters and since we are using different strategies, we thought of trying this as well,” says a source from the media agency handling BJP’s mandate.

The source goes on to say that it is a “different” way to reach our audience. And, one will see a lot of astrixs and L- shaped advertisements on various GECs as well as news channels till the elections commence.

While BJPs in-branding campaign on shows started last week, the Congress had bought ad-spots on Channel V I almost a month back.

Channel V, itself, through various initiatives, is encouraging youngsters to go out and vote. “This doesn’t mean we support a particular party over the other. These are just commercial deals which we sign with agencies handling the parties. There is no association with any party,” clarifies Channel V India, GM & channel head Prem Kamath.

So, the next time you tune in to shows like Sadda Haq or Dil Dosti Dance, on Channel V, do not miss out on the message from the lead characters to go out and vote.

  • Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

MUMBAI: If rumors doing the rounds are to be believed, Anurag Kashyap’s dream project Bombay Velvet with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will not release as per the schedule.

According to Zoom, the release of Aamir Khan’s movie PK on Christmas may have lead Kashyap to postpone the release of Bombay Velvet. This decision will then call off the clash between Bollywood’s two biggest blockbusters this year.

Further, the makers of Bombay Velvet tried to convince Aamir Khan and the producers of the PK team to adjust the release dates to no avail. However, Khan denied any such news at his birthday party recently.

History says it; there have been enormous losses when two big Bollywood films clash at the box office. While in 2012, the Diwali release of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar divided the box office profit, the 2013 Eid release of Chennai Express and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobara’s clash brought in massive monetary loss to Ekta Kapoor. And the cherry on the cake is the fight within for maximum number of screens with the distributors! Considering this, guess the makers of Bombay Velvet have decided to hold back the release and not compete with the marketing king and perfectionist Khan at the box office.

Amitabh Bachchan and Honey Singh come together

MUMBAI: While Amitabh Bachchan has followers from all age groups, a few younger fans may be added to his fan base as he will soon be seen with rapper Honey Singh in the movie Bhootnath Returns. And the credit for the collaboration goes to Bhushan Kumar of T-Series who has brought them together.

The rapper has composed a special number for the film. Big B, who has always been at the core of experimentation has proved it yet again that age isn’t a barrier for anything. This special number is yet another nouveau offering from the icon to look forward to.

Kumar and Honey Singh have earlier given chartbusters such as ‘Sunny’ from Yaariyan, Lungi Dance from Chennai Express among others.

  • Golden Kela nominates the most popular for the worst performance

Golden Kela nominates the most popular for the worst performance

MUMBAI: They are the heartthrobs of Bollywood and their movies were the highest grosser of 2013. But still, they couldn’t impress their critics much. We are talking about Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, whose movies Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 earned in crores at the Box Office but have been nominated in the sixth edition of the Golden Kela Awards – the Indian version of the Raspberry Awards – that celebrates the worst of Bollywood.

Interestingly, these two are not the only ones facing flak; many top notch actors of the industry are in the list. So while there’s Deepika Padukone for Chennai Express, Sonam Kapoor has been nominated for Raanjhana, and Sonakshi Sinha for R…Rajkumar.

Golden Kela Awards founder Jatin Varma thinks that the movies that released this year gave the jury ample choice for the nominations. “It might be tough for the voters to decide which one was the absolute worst! This time the nominations were especially difficult, because Bollywood spewed out an incredible amount of crappy films and the Indian audience spent a large amount of money on them,” he remarked.

To add spice to the show, a few new categories have been introduced that include special awards like Aakhir Kyun Award, Dara Singh Award for Worst Accent, Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya, Aap Yahaan Aaye Kisliye Award and Ra.One Award for Worst Premise. These awards will only be announced at the official awards ceremony that will take place on 29 March, 2014 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

  • Zee Cine Awards scales up for 2014

Zee Cine Awards scales up for 2014

MUMBAI: All roads and the biggest names in Indian cinema and television converge at Mumbai’s Film City on 8 February this year. Reason is the 14th edition of the Zee Cine Awards aka the ‘World’s Biggest Viewers’ Choice Awards’ to be held there.

Among A-list acts, Shah Rukh Khan will perform to some of the hit numbers from his films including Lungi Dance, 1234 and so on. This year, Lux Cozi has been roped in as title sponsor. Additionally, the network is pitching for a special partner and looking for more sponsors across categories.

The Zee Cine Awards, started in 1998, were the first ever awards to be introduced by a television network and have since grown into an institution of sorts.

Exults Zeel managing director and CEO Punit Goenka: “Zee Cine Awards is a property with growing global reach and audience share. The success of this award over the years makes it an indispensable component of advertisers’ media mix and this year, they will further leverage it across the network’s varied channels.”

This edition of the Zee Cine Awards will see a partnership with the Neeraj Pandey scripted film, Total Siyapaa, starring Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam and several initiatives on this front are to be announced shortly.

Says Goenka: “Every year, the talent recognized by our viewers continues to inspire us with the depth and richness that the Hindi film fraternity represents. We will support extraordinary new films that need a platform like Zee Cine awards to showcase them to the industry, and that’s why we are pleased to support Total Siyapaa. We are looking forward to celebrating their achievements in a fittingly glamorous way at the awards.”

What also makes the Zee Cine Awards unique is that viewers’ votes decide winners. For instance, last year’s awards drew an unprecedented over 4.5 million votes from across the globe. This year too, in keeping with its promise Haq Hai Aapka, the network will only declare nominees across popular categories and then pass the baton of selecting Best Actor, Best Film and so on to its loyal audience through a transparent and hassle-free voting mechanism.

As Zeel chief sales officer Ashish Sehgal puts it: “We are amongst the first broadcasters to come up with an award like this. And secondly, we were the only ones to give them out as per viewers’ voting. Earlier, all the awards were constituted by film magazines – be it Screen or Filmfares.”

Significantly, the Zee Cine Awards 2014 will be telecast on 23 February on multiple channels (Zee TV, Zee Anmol, Zee Tamizh, Zee Cafe etc.) across multiple geographies in different languages and genres, with a programming reach of over 700+ million viewers across 168 countries.

So why are the Zee Cine Awards being held in Mumbai for the second consecutive year after creating a worldwide footprint across destinations like Singapore, London, Mauritius and Dubai?

Replies Sehgal: “With almost all awards airing overseas, after a long period, we brought it back to India, thinking we should give a chance to Indian audiences also.”

Zee Network is pulling out all stops to promote one of its biggest properties across platforms.

Viewers can log onto www.zeecineawards.com for a visual treat that traces the journey of the awards from 1998 through 2000 and till date, complete with over 2000 exclusive photographs and over 500 videos showcasing some of the best performances, award acceptance speeches, Kodak moments and behind-the-scenes buzz.

Apart from this, the awards will be promoted on all network channels, giving advertisers an opportunity to reach out to different audiences across categories. Digitally too, the awards will be promoted in a big way with SRK’s performance as one of the highlights.

With the channel having achieved its targeted revenue of Rs 300 million last year, what is the target for this year, given there are restrictions on inventories unlike last time. Apparently, the network plans to make the extra moolah by showcasing the event on Zee’s HD channels as well (Zee HD, Zee Cinema HD and Zee Café HD). “Given the restrictions on inventories, the only thing that can go up is pricing,” says Sehgal.

“This year, we are looking at kind of maintaining those revenues because we believe they are the highest revenues generated by an award show. The advantage we have this year is we can make extra money by showcasing these awards on our HD channels (Zee, Zee Cinema HD and also Zee Café). For evolved and discerning audiences, we are selling it separately. Though title and powered by will be common in both the channels, there will be more numbers of associate sponsors separately,” signs off Sehgal.

Sharma said: “It’s the year of the common man and I am also one of them. To be awarded amidst such eminent personalities and dignitaries it’s a great achievement in itself. Special thanks to CNN-IBN to consider me an Indian of the year. I have always believed in working and entertaining the common man and that I think is the success mantra of my life.”

Instituted in 2006, this was the eighth edition of CNN-IBN Indian of the Year awards.
