2022 International Emmy Award announces gala & nominations from 23 countries

Mumbai: Nominations for the 2022 International Emmy Awards were announced by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. There are 60 nominees across 15 categories, spanning 23 countries.

“When you look at the geographic spread, diversity, and quality of our nominees, it becomes obvious that great television knows no borders and is emerging around the world,” said International Academy President & CEO Bruce Paisner. “We look forward to recognising these outstanding programmes and performances on our global stage with the International Emmy.”

The International Academy will present a new sports documentary category for the first time at its gala in New York.

Founded in 1969, the International Academy is a non-profit, membership organisation based in New York City, with over 700 members from over 60 countries and 500 leading media and entertainment companies representing all industries of television, including internet, mobile, and technology.

“This year is our 50th annual ceremony, and it’s particularly important because we are back at full strength after the pandemic. Last year, we had an in-person ceremony, but it was limited to half of our usual attendance,” stated Paisner. “Especially important to note as well, we are also resuming our in-person World Festival, highlighting the nominated programs from around the world.”

The International Academy is a unique organisation because it serves as a platform for international television and media leaders to come together to exchange ideas, discuss common issues, and promote new strategies for the future development of quality global television programming.

“The International Emmys provide an incredible opportunity for media companies from around the globe to build bridges and connect with one another,” stated Narendra Reddy, Chief Operating Officer of The Africa Channel. “We’ve worked with the Academy to raise the profile of African content and media companies. We organised two juries in South Africa with the heads of media companies from all around the continent, which was very successful.”

Each year, the leading television producers from around the world showcase their programming and compete to be recognised at the prestigious International Emmy Awards, where over one thousand international broadcasting, production, and distribution executives convene to celebrate the best in global television produced outside of the United States, as well as U.S. primetime programmes produced in languages other than English.

In 2021, nominees from India included Nawazuddin Siddique for best performance by an actor in Serious Man, Vir Das: For India for best comedy, and Aarya for best drama series.

“The quantity and quality of TV production is exploding around the world,” said Paisner. “It is clear to me that the International Academy and the Emmys play a vital role in recognising the importance of international television.”

In addition to the International Emmy Awards, the Academy’s yearly schedule of events includes the International Emmy Kids Awards at Mip and a series of industry events such as Academy Day, the International Emmy World Television Festival, and panels on substantive industry topics.

Winners will be announced at the 50th International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City on Monday, 21 November 2022.

  • This April, Romedy Now presents the God of Laughter – Charlie Chaplin!

This April, Romedy Now presents the God of Laughter – Charlie Chaplin!

MUMBAI: This April get ready to laugh your pants off as Romedy NOW, India’s exclusive destination for Love and Laughter, presents the Best of Charlie Chaplin all this month.

Charlie Chaplin, the ‘God’ of laughter, once said “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” So, it’s time to double up, split your sides and guffaw! Romedy NOW brings the antics of The Little Tramp in a month long Chaplin Series titled ‘Jolly Good Chaplin’ for a daily dose of nostalgic laughter every Monday through Thursday.

It’s Charlie’s day out in A Day’s Pleasure as he goes on an excursion with his wife and kids. But one trouble after the other like traffic jam and car break-down play party poopers for them! Watch hilarious antics like Charlie walking across a fat woman’s back to get on to the boat and many more in this one. The Tramp falls in love with a visually-impaired flower girl in City Lights and makes friends with a drunkard millionaire after saving him from a suicide attempt. Funny situations like the scrawny Charlie getting into a tournament with a brawny boxer to help the impoverished girl financially make this film cute and hilarious at the same time.

Pay Day has Charlie playing a bricklayer whose bully of a wife is like the national bank that takes away his pay as soon as he gets it. But he hides money to enjoy a night out drinking. Missing his last transportation on the rainy night, he gets back home just in time to pretend that he is leaving for work again! From a tramp to a war hero, Charlie makes it to the boot camp in Shoulder Arms where he “surrounds” and captures 13 Germans alone and pretends to be a tree trunk and goes behind the enemy lines! But is it a victory parade or a charade?

A farm hand who milks a cow into his coffee, fries eggs by holding the chicken over the frying pan and dances with nymphs in his dreams, Charlie is in love with his neighbour’s daughter but despised by her father in Sunny Side. As he tries to woo her, an injured city slicker has designs on the same girl. So who will win her? The Tramp finds himself employed in a circus and in love with the ringmaster’s stepdaughter in The Circus. A tightrope walk dodging escaped monkeys and many funny acts make this one a riot!

Charlie gets adventurous in The Gold Rush as he goes to the Yukon to participate in the Klondike Gold Rush. Watch him play a persecuted Jewish barber as well as a Nazi dictator Hynkel, a spoof of Hitler in The Great Dictator. There’s too much to laugh about as the Tramp plays the double role of a hobo and a wealthy man in The Idle Class and the comedy of errors at a masquerade ball because of the doppelgangers. Get ready for love and laughter as Charlie plays an adoptive father in The Kid. A momentary parting and then uniting this huge hit has funny and tender moments galore. And then check out his comic capers in The Pilgrim where he plays a convict on the run who is mistaken for a pastor in a small town.

In addition, DQ is working on ways to leverage its large library of properties through SVOD and mobile platforms. “We are currently in discussion with YouTube to find ways of monetising animated content through a dedicated channel showcasing our global and domestic properties. We believe these platforms will play a very significant role in reaching a large and diversified audience in the future,” says Chakravarti.
The company has also launched a game app of its IP, The Jungle Book, called ‘The Great Escape’ for the android platform. “We plan to launch similar games and apps on android and iOS platforms for other IPs such as Peter Pan, 5 Children and It etc. soon,” he adds.

In case you thought that’s it, the company has some more production and licensing deals waiting in the wings…

The book contains Ray’s articles that lay scattered in dailies, magazines, film bulletins and publications which are now extinct. It is rich with images like film and production stills, rare portraits of Ray and a substantial number of sketches and photographs by the great director.

The book has Ray’s views on filmmakers like Charlie Chaplin, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean Luc Goddard and Bengal‘s matinee idol Uttam Kumar. This book brings together some of his most cerebral writings on film and even gives the readers a peek into his experiences at film festivals.

This is Ray‘s second book on cinema in English, appearing 35 years after the publication of his first one ‘Our Films Their Films, in 1976.

MUMBAI: PVR Cinemas is gearing up to release director Rajshree Ojha’s film, Chaurahen (Crossroads), across Delhi Gurgaon, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore on 16 March.

The film is based on short stories penned by author Nirmal Verma. An urban film about relationships and set in three cities, the film shows a Mumbai couple going through ups and downs in their relationship, an extra-marital affair in Kolkata and a father coming to terms with his son’s death in Kochi.

Chaurahen stars Zeenat Aman, Victor Banerjee, Roopali Ganguly, Soha Ali Khan and Shayan Munshi in pivotal roles.

Interestingly, Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Kiera has an important role in the film. She plays Lea, who has an extramarital affair in Kolkata.

Explaining how she got Kiera on board, Ojha disclosed, “She had watched my first film Moment (1999) which I made as a student in America. It fetched me a Student Academy Award (an Oscar competition for student films initiated by Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences). After that she evinced interest in working with me. I informed her that I was shooting in Mumbai. She said she had no issues and that’s how she came on board.”
