    Parmeet Sethi nominated for best actor by the Israeli Film Academy

    MUMBAI: Art knows no boundaries. Contrary to the rules of the academy which awards only Israeli talent, Parmeet Sethi (of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin fame) has been nominated in the best actor category for Israeli Film Academy awards for his pivotal role in the Israeli film Sof Haolam Shmola (At the End of the World and Left).

    Sethi’s name has been recommended by the producer of the film Dudi Zilber.

    The film deals with interactions between new immigrants from India and Morocco, placed in a development township. Sethi plays an Indian Jew who goes to Israel dreaming about a very rosy future but meets with lots of hardships, before he eventually settles down.

    When contacted last evening, Sethi had just received the news and said he was thrilled to be a part of the nomination list. “I hope I get the award. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

    Twenty-three films have entered the competition so far and some 700 members of the Academy will shortlist the nominations in 13 different categories for the 27 September award ceremony. In case of not being able to make it to the grand finale. “I can’t say anything at the moment. My television and film assignments bind me here. Let’s see how I am placed on D-day,” Sethi added.

    Currently, Sethi is doing Sony Entertainment Television’s ‘Jassi…’, Sahara Manoranjan’s Ruby Duby Hub Dub and films like the English-Punjabi bilingual Political Asylum (with Juhi Chawla and Gurdas Mann) and (late) Bunty Soorma’s incomplete film Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’, which is now being completed by Vikram Bhatt.

    MUMBAI: It’s bigger alright and the buzz word is International. While the stage is all set for the awards function, the Zee Cine awards 2004 has signed on “glittering” sponsors for the awards.

    Latest, Zee Television Network has got Australian Gold Mine CitiGold Corporation on board as the associate sponsor.

    The Australian gold mine will create a new image for Zee Cine Awards 2004. It has already designed an exclusive trophy for Cine Awards, with a hint of 24 carat gold.

    According to a report on AMEinfo.com, the design of the trophy is extremely distinctive and different from any other trophy design across the world, adding prestige to the event.

    The trophy designed is 500 mm in height and 100 mm in width. While the “futuristic” design, is to further Zee’s claim that the awards are not just about rewarding the excellence in the Indian film industry but doing it in style.
    The gold plate designed is to highlight the fact that the ceremony is being held in Dubai – the city of gold.

    Beside CitiGold Corporation, Zee has tied up with ME Bank and Dubai Media City as the presenting sponsors of the Zee Cine Awards 2004. The awards are co-sponsored by Samsung Mobile Phone and the associate sponsors include Jacky’s Electronics LLC besides CitiGold Corporation. The official newspaper is Khaleej Times, official radio is Arabian Radio Network, official magazine is Ahlan Masala and the official transport is Europcar. According to the media report the best actor male and female will walk away with an Optra car each from Chevrolet. The AfterShow Party will be held in partnership with Red Bull.

    While the seventh Zee Cine Awards ceremony will be held at the Dubai Airport Expo on 26 February 2004, the televised version will air on Zee on 27 January at 8:30 pm. The awards ceremony will be aired on a later date on Zee Cinema and Music. According to the industry source the airtime during the telecast is being sold at a premium rate.

    Zee Network, is predicting a viewer turnout of over 500 million for the awards function.

    MUMBAI: Twenty-four-hour news and information network CNN International has been named the ‘Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year’ at the 8th Asian TV Awards ceremony, held in Singapore recently.
     
     
    The regional industry event also honored CNN’s BizAsia team for producing the ‘Best Business News Programme.’

    A company release quoted CNN Asia Pacific’s senior vice president Ian Macintosh as saying, “We are delighted that the efforts of CNN’s team of professionals here in Asia have been recognised by our peers in the industry.”

    In the Asia Pacific, CNN produces prime time morning and evening news and business programmes from its regional headquarters in Hong Kong. Some of its interesting shows include News Biz Today, Asia Now and Talk Asia.

    Television Asia magazine’s Asian TV Awards is an annual regional award programme covering 15 Asian countries and judged by an international jury. This year, it is said to have attracted more than 1,800 entries for a total of 29 award categories.

    DD launches Ranchi regional news unit

    National broadcaster Doordarshan has flagged off a regional news unit in Ranchi yesterday, the capital of the new north Indian state of Jharkhand.

    Information & Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj was present for the inaugaration on Tuesday. During the same ceremony, Swaraj also launched the satellite uplinking of DD’s Ranchi unit.

    She also inaugarated the branch office of the Press Information Bureau and the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Media.

    Other luminaries who were present for the opening of the regional news unit include Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, Union Agro Industries Minister Karia Munda and Minister of State for Rural Development Rita Verma.
