    Channel [V] Chinese Music Awards celebrated in Shanghai

    MUMBAI: Channel [V] staged the the 13th Chinese Music Awards ceremony at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.

    The event was jointly presented by Channel [V], China Central Television (CCTV) and Shanghai Media Group for the fifth consecutive year.

    Chinese artists from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, including Eason Chan, Wang Leehom, Mayday, S.H.E., Fan Fan, Kenji Wu, Show Luo, A-mei Chang and Tank were present at the ceremony.

    Thirty-one awards were handed out last night at the 13th Channel [V] Chinese Music Awards including Best Male Artist to Eason Chan and Best Female Artist to A-mei Chang.

    Other award winners included Wang Leehom as Most Popular Male Artist and Best Singer-Songwriter, Angela Zhang as Most Popular Female Artist, S.H.E. as Best Group and Tank as Best Newcomer.

    The event also launched the inaugural [V] Wireless Original Music Award. The new award follows the [V] Wireless Original Music service launched in November 2006, a Channel [V] initiative that invites aspiring musicians to create and upload original Chinese songs to China Mobile’s WAP service, monternet.

    Subscribers to the monternet service can then download the songs onto their mobile handsets, and vote for their favourites. The debut award was picked up by Xiao Fei from Beijing for his song “Instant Noodle”.

    Global mobile entertainment company Jamster joined the Awards for the first time this year as the presenting sponsor. Sony Ericsson was the official sponsor, supporting the Awards with a host of original music initiatives in mainland China.

    MUMBAI: China Central Television (CCTV) partnered with partnered with China Mobile and China Unicom has launched its mobile TV service.

    CCTV will provide live broadcasting and downloadable programs to mobile TV users. The CCTV mobile channel is currently free.

    It will also contact international and local TV stations to develop more content for the consumers.

    CCTV honours AsiaPac broadcasters with ‘ABU prizes awards’

    MUMBAI: The annual Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) prizes awards ceremony, hosted by China Central Television (CCTV-China) has presented awards to broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region in recognition of programming and broadcast engineering excellence.

    The awards were presented by , Radio Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China vice-minister state administration Tian Jin, ABU president Genichi Hashimoto, CCTV president Zhao Huayong, China National Radio president Yang Bo, China Radio international president Wang Gengnian and CCTV vice-president Hu En.

    211 entries were received for the annual award’s radio and TV categories. There were 147 entries for the TV categories, and 64 for radio.

    TV categories included drama, entertainment, children, youth, news, documentary, and sports. Additionally, a special jury prize was also kept for programmes targeting broadcasters from less developed countries which showed creativity despite the limited resources available.

    Categories for radio were drama, infotainment, children and youth, news, documentary, external broadcasts, and the special jury prize.

    “We are most delighted with the quality of entries this year. The interest in the radio programme category has increased over the past year and in particular, there was serious competition for the TV documentary category,” said ABU director of programmes Tatsuya Nakamura.

    ABU Prize for sports programmes chairperson Remesh Kumar added, “It was nice to see a whole range of broadcasters and producers from a variety of nationalities submitting their work. There was also a spectrum of presentations relating to sports from live productions, to studio presentations to documentaries.”

    MUMBAI: The Malaysian national broadcaster Radio Television Malaysia is expected to ink a tie-up with China Central Television (CCTV), Xinhua News reports quoting a company executive.

    The deal will have CCTV and RTM exchanging economic, cultural and tourism-related programs, Information minister Zainuddin bin Maidin has been quoted as saying in the report. CCTV will be keeping a safe distance from political programmes.

    According to Zainuddin, China Radio International (CRI) is also keen on joining hands with RTM to strengthen its Malay language service in China.

    It can be noted that, Subhash Chandra’s Zee Network in September signed an agreement with CCTV for entering China. As per the deal, CCTV has licensed to Zee Network, the use of news and other programs from CCTV International (CCTV-9). It has also authorised Zee to pick up their signals and transmit it over the Zee Network. Zee Network in turn will license to CCTV the use of its news and programs. Both the networks will exchange news programmes, documentaries and feature programs introducing each other’s culture, history, geography and economy for telecast.

They have also authorised Zee to pick up their signals and transmit it over the Zee Network. Zee Network in turn will license to China Central Television the use of its news and programs. Both the networks will exchange news programmes, documentaries and feature programs introducing each other’s culture, history, geography, economy, etc. for telecast.
    It was in July that Indiantelevision.com first reported that Zee was planning to enter China.

    Zee Network and CCTV will enhance cooperation in program production including television dramas, films and feature programs. The exchange of television dramas and programs will be mainly based on purchase. Both sides shall take care of all copyright obligations for all programs to be provided to the other party.

    Speaking on the signing of this agreement, Mukund Cairae, Head – Asia Pacific, International Business, said, “We are very pleased to announce this agreement with China Central Television. China is an important market and we are optimistic about audience response there. This initiative is a step towards promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the people of India and China. Jointly the populations of India and China total a third of the world population. With interactions such as these, we will responsibly make our populations aware of the rich cultural heritage that exists in Asia.”

    Adding further he said, “We will not be charging licensing fees from each other for news programs. This contract is valid for two years and is extendable on mutual agreement.”

    CCTV president Huayong Zhao said, “Interactions such as these will facilitate better understanding between the people of China and India and will pave the way for future cooperation between our two countries.”

    In addition to this content sharing agreement, China TV week will be held in India and India TV week in China with television hosts from both sides appearing on TV together in the same TV week. As part of the TV week, both sides agree to broadcast each other’s programs half hour per day, seven days in series.

    Mainland China exports of CCTV DVRs to reach US$139 million in 2006

    MUMBAI: Mainland China exports of CCTV (closed-circuit TV) digital video recorders are expected to reach US$139 million in 2006, up 70 per cent from last year.

    A new report released, “China Sourcing Report CCTV Digital Video Recorders,” indicates that buyers sourcing CCTV digital video recorders from Greater China and South Korea can expect increased supply and lower price quotes in the coming months. These findings are based on in-depth manufacturer interviews, factory visits and surveys, states an official release.

    Report publisher Mark Saunderson says, “The worldwide security boom has makers expanding production capacity and predicting big export increases this year – some larger makers are even setting up overseas offices to sell own-brand products.”

    Among surveyed manufacturers:

    – 29 per cent say exports will increase by more than 100 per cent;
    – 17 per cent expect increases of between 50 and 100 per cent;
    – 52 per cent foresee increases of up to 50 per cent and;
    – 2 per cent expect a decrease in exports.

    Manufacturers forecast huge capacity growth, price declines for CCTV DVRs.
    Buyers can expect greater supply, with 100 per cent of surveyed Greater China and South Korea manufacturers of CCTV digital video recorders planning to increase production capacity:

    – 40 per cent of suppliers plan to increase capacity by 100 per cent or more;
    – 7 per cent plan increases of between 50 and 100 per cent and;
    – 53 per cent plan to increase capacity by up to 50 per cent.

    Manufacturers cited fierce competition as a key factor in their expectations of lower prices in the coming year. More than half of surveyed makers project declines:

    – 62 per cent say prices will likely decline in the next 12 months;
    – 25 per cent foresee stable prices and;
    – 13 per cent expect price increases.

    The 122-page “China Sourcing Report CCTV Digital Video Recorders” report includes detailed profiles of 47 Greater China and South Korea manufacturers and features a product gallery with 126 top-selling export models. It also includes production and pricing forecasts as well as in-depth reports on major supply centers, adds the release.

    MUMBAI: Tandberg Television has announced that it is enabling China Central Television (CCTV) to provide its viewers with high definition coverage of live games from the Fifa 2006 World Cup in Germany. 

    CCTV is using Tandberg Television’s award-winning MPEG-4 AVC HD encoding and decoding solutions to maximize the bandwidth of its DS3 international link and its local delivery network.

    CCTV is one of the 150 operators from 145 countries that have broadcasting rights from Fifa’s Host Broadcast Services (HBS). Live feeds from matches in 12 German cities are being broadcast around the world, including the final in Berlin on 9 July. For almost a year, CCTV has been broadcasting an HDTV service using a Tandberg MPEG-2 head-end system, states an official release.

    “Broadcasting the World Cup in high definition is not only a magnificent achievement in its own right, but is also an excellent preparation for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing,” says CCTV chief engineer Ding Wen Hua. “The implication for large-scale broadcasting in HD is immense and this is a significant event in the Chinese, and Asian, television industry.”

    As well as using Tandberg’s advanced HD compression, CCTV is the first broadcaster in Asia to use the new professional multi-format MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC SD/HD decoder, the Tandberg RX1290, which is being launched at Broadcast Asia this week.

    he Tandberg RX1290 receiver is the world’s first multi-format MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC decoder, capable of processing and decoding more video formats than any other receiver and enabling network operators and broadcasters to deliver content from studio to studio and across networks to regional head-ends and affiliates, the release adds.

    CANNES: National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) and China Central Television (CCTV) have announced the completion of a two-part high-definition television documentary Inside the Forbidden City.

    NGCI CEO David Haslingden says, “We are delighted to partner with CCTV in producing a historically and culturally rich film for our global viewers this fall. It is a valuable step forward as part of NGCI’s commitment to developing local content everywhere and expanding our collaboration with CCTV”.

    CANNES: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will host its second International Academy Day on 16 and 17 August in Beijing in conjunction with the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television (SARFT), Phoenix Satellite Television and CCTV.

    The event will feature panels and keynotes from leading television organizations from China, Japan, Korea and Thailand as well as breakfasts, lunches and cocktails hosted by international sponsors.

    Academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner said, “We are looking forward to using the International Academy’s convening power to shine the spotlight on Asia’s vibrant television industry. This two-day conference program will be a one of a kind networking opportunity, and because of SARFT’s central role, I imagine any international media company looking to do business in China will want to be represented.”

    Participants will include members of the International academy, government officials and television and film executives from across the region. The highlights include a presentation on the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a case study on a hit Korean TV show, and an opening speech by a SARFT executive, stated a media report.
