Festive wheels turn faster as car platform hits record traffic

MUMBAI: CarTrade Tech’s consumer platforms struck gold yesterday, recording their highest-ever single-day traffic as Indians hunt for festival bargains on wheels. The company told the Bombay stock exchange that CarWale and BikeWale saw visitor numbers rocket by 74 per cent compared with the first day of Navratri last year, and 60 per cent above August’s daily average.

The surge points to renewed vigour in India’s car market, helped along by recent GST rate cuts that have made vehicles more affordable. For a sector that has endured sluggish demand, the spike offers a tantalising glimpse of better times ahead.

“Yesterday was a landmark day for our platforms,” said CarTrade consumer group chief executive Banwari Lal Sharma. “The festive excitement, amplified by GST-led affordability, has fuelled unprecedented consumer activity.”

Whether this traffic translates into actual sales—and signals a broader revival in consumer sentiment during the festival season—remains to be seen. But for India’s media and entertainment companies, which depend heavily on advertising from car manufacturers, the numbers will make for cheerful reading.

  • Hatchbacks most favoured by customers; Maruti & Hyundai lead auto category: CarDekho

Hatchbacks most favoured by customers; Maruti & Hyundai lead auto category: CarDekho

MUMBAI: The Indian consumer is now more discerning than ever before. Even when bombarded with options galore, consumers today know exactly what they want. And this can well be seen in the findings of a recent report released by Indian online automobile marketplace CarDekho.

The report on online search patterns of the Indian consumers compared to actual in-market sales of cars during the festive season showed that when it comes to cars, hatchbacks were the most preferred customer choice, figuring in consideration sets for nearly 47 per cent consumer with their actual demand clocking in 48 per cent of the overall figure. The sedan category also saw consideration (26 per cent) and demand (25 per cent) nearly at par with one another.

On the other hand, Maruti and Hyundai occupied the top slots in the hatchback as well as the sedan segment, with Honda also marking prominent presence in the latter category.

The report, which is based on CarDekho’s platform traffic as well as Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data, focused on various car categories such as hatchback, MUV, Sedan, SUV and Compact SUV/MUV to present a comprehensive statistical picture of the user consideration versus actual demand.

Compact SUV/MUV section saw a high consideration per centage (17 per cent) due to the buzz effect surrounding the new category launch. However, the actual demand for the segment was only 10 per cent, which could be attributed to the relative unfamiliarity of the Indian public with the category. MUVs, on the other hand, resulted in a much higher actual demand (12 per cent) than consideration, which stood at a mere two per cent.

GirnarSoft CMO LK Gupta said, “The October-November festive season is a time when Indian consumers wield their financial clout to buy things that they have shortlisted over the year. As such, this report provides a valuable insight into the shopping trends during this busy period. These insights will help car manufacturers to better understand the dynamics of consideration sets that buyers go into the market with, and how they change through the purchase process. The report also helps us as an auto portal to improve upon our existing services and shape our product offerings to be more in sync with the consumer preferences.”

CarDekho’s report also highlighted the importance of price and value-for-money proposition for the Indian consumers. Amongst hatchbacks, Hyundai’s Elite i20 saw nearly 17 per cent user consideration; however, the actual conversion stood only at nine per cent. In comparison, its Grand i10 model, priced nearly Rs 2 lakh lower, managed to record 11 per cent demand despite a measly four per cent consideration. The Alto also recorded 18 per cent actual demand as compared to eight per cent consideration owing to its lower price and Maruti’s brand value. Similarly for the Sedan category, Dzire’s actual demand (37 per cent) far eclipsed its consideration (16 per cent), while the case was reversed for Honda City, which saw 20 per cent consideration, but only 11 per cent actual demand.

However, while price was an important factor that drove transactions, performance and features were also given due consideration. In the Compact SUV/MUV category, both the consideration (14 per cent) and actual conversion (12 per cent) for Maruti’s S-Cross was much lower comparatively to Hyundai’s Creta (32 per cent consideration and 28 per cent actual) despite a lower price. This was attributed to more attractive features offered by Creta as compared to S-Cross.

  • DC Design unveils two new cars at Auto Expo 2014

DC Design unveils two new cars at Auto Expo 2014

NEW DELHI: India’s premier automotive design and specialist car manufacturer DC Design is ready with two exciting new concepts to delight automobile enthusiasts at the 2014 Auto Expo. Keeping in line with the firm’s philosophy and also its previous track record for delivering drop dead gorgeously styled vehicles, the two new concept cars are production bound in 2016.

The DC Eleron and the DC Tia represent DC Design’s ability to conceive an idea for various niche segments and then design and develop a vehicle with unique attributes that go beyond mere style. While the Eleron is an open Targa-topped SUV with radical lines, the Tia is a nifty two-seater runabout for town use with outrageously crafted lines yet packing in a proven small driveline.

Both the cars were unveiled today by the award winning actress and style icon Kareena Kapoor Khan and Mr. Dilip Chhabria, Founder, DC Design. Speaking at the launch, Mr. Chhabria said, “I want the most desirable car in the world to bear a ‘Made in India’ tag. For Avanti which we launched two years ago we are looking at manufacturing 2000 units per annum starting third quarter of this year. For Eleron and Tia we are looking at 500 units and 1000 units per annum respectively by 2016. We have currently invested in the excess of INR 85 crores for the production of Avanti and INR 50 crores each for the production of Eleron and Tia so far and are looking at further investments in the coming future. We aren’t a global player; we will not build millions of cars a year, but I promise you, the few thousand that we will put out every year will be the sexiest cars on Indian roads.”

Making heads turn at the launch Kareena Kapoor Khan also added, “It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of such a remarkable launch. DC Design is clearly the most prominent and promising name in the Indian automotive design industry. Both Eleron and Tia are spectacular looking cars and are sure to create a buzz amongst Indian auto enthusiasts. I wish the team the very best for these car launches.”

The Eleron is DC Design’s high-end take for a top line SUV with a difference! The name has been phonetically conceived from the aeronautic term ‘aileron’ given that the nature of the car’s design takes in a supposedly duo-layered approach as regards its bodywork, the upper half seemingly floating on the lower base whichever way you tend to look at it.

From the deliciously overwhelming Eleron SUV, DC Design moves fast-forward to the mega-mini segment with its all-new two-seater runabout the DC Tia! It isn’t difficult to understand why such a car given its small footprint but with radical turnout given that the Indian car market’s fortune lies at the base of the pyramid and this is where an added premium positioning is ripe for the times. DC Tia again treads the space frame chassis route with carbon composite bodywork – a sure shot recipe for strength and structural integrity while keeping weight down to a bare minimum.

  • Nicks digital roadmap

    Nicks digital roadmap

The times they are a-changin – Bob Dylan’s popular song – couldn’t have rung more true than present-day. A decade into the current century and change feels like the only constant. Gone are the days of VHS video tapes, black and white television, analog channels and wires; these have been rendered redundant by Blu-Ray discs, LED HD TVs, digital channels, Wi-fi and other what have you in terms of electronics. Mobile phones, laptops and tablets have replaced children’s toys and why not, when e-textbooks are on their way to becoming the norm in schools. The younger ‘digital’ generation is conversing in a language unbeknownst to the older one.

In such a scenario, Nickelodeon (Nick) India, a part of Viacom18 Media, like its peers, is pulling out all stops to adapt to the changing times. Speaking at length to Viacom18 VP and business head – Digital Media Rajneel Kumar, indiantelevision.com tried to find out just how.

The idea is to build something for advertisers to address their audience in this period says Rajneel Kumar

“We went in for a complete revamp of the Nick India site, as we wanted to make it completely gaming-centric, along with showcasing our great library of video content,” explains Kumar.

For the uninitiated, Nick India has an array of online properties under its wing, addressing different age groups among youngsters. Nick Jr. caters to the needs of toddlers, but parents too are actively involved in their kids’ consumption patterns. The prime property, Nick, has both kids and parents consuming or engaging on the digital platform. And then there’s TeenNick, which is the only such platform, which addresses young girls and Sonic Gang which caters to young boys, who’re typically into high octane action, adventure and drama.

Of which, Sonic Gang has been a revelation of sorts, what with some exclusive content around popular IPs such as TMNT, Kung Fu Panda, Power Rangers and Avatar.

With 100 plus episodes of content and nearly 60 high-end (overall more than 80) games, the Nick India site has witnessed an increase in time spent by more than six minutes, which is deemed very healthy. Additionally, it has an exclusive digital magazine titled ‘SonicMag’ which covers gaming, cars, sports and gadgets. Currently, the magazine boasts of over 49 articles, with fresh articles being published from time to time.

Kumar says all these properties are an ideal platform for advertisers to reach out to their audience. “Looking at the overall digital economy and how we are addressing it, we are creating properties that help advertisers reach out to these particular segments, which are of keen interest to them. We are working really closely with advertisers across all categories to essentially run campaigns that are not really straight forward ones like banners and videos, but large campaigns around each of these markets that we are addressing,” he explains.

Citing an example, he says: “If the addressable community is Nick Jr. as a category and looking at parents, our focus would actually be on taking characters from within that entire franchise and making it into how parents are an active part of the entire campaign…”
For a one-of-its-kind platform like TeenNick, apart from fresh programming and a presence on social media, Nick also encourages associations with fashion and lifestyle brands. There are integrated campaigns running for Nick’s advertisers, which run from the online space to the apps and as per the need of advertisers.

Nick prides itself on having an all-round strategy. “We also look at on-ground activation. So, it’s a complete 360, and not just sending a piecemeal part of the digital experience to advertisers. It’s about integrating all our strengths and being able to address the audience’s perspective as far as possible,” exults Kumar.

As far as that online video streaming monster called YouTube is concerned, Nick is very clear on how it plans to use it. “We use YouTube to primarily do a lot of promotions around our content and for showcasing teasers as also some content pieces from our entire library,” says Kumar.

The idea is to grab the attention of the young net surfer and lead him/her to the Nick India website and the strategy has worked wonders for the revamped website, which has seen more than 50 per cent growth in traffic, a 150 per cent increase in the time spent and more than 650,000 game plays in the last 60 days. “Our strategy is solid as we’ve seen how the digital advertising industry is growing. So we are building something for advertisers to address their audience in this period,” says Kumar.

And how does Nick manage this gargantuan task? Apparently, they have a fairly robust digital team comprising a products team around the web and mobile (the latter also includes a small in-house gaming studio), a technology team which takes care of web and mobile, an editorial team which looks after social media and content creation and a very strong sales team.

With youngsters increasingly preoccupied with games on their mobile phones, Nick also has a strong, primarily two-fold mobile apps strategy. First, every consumer should be able to access the app which is outside of television and is addressable to that consumer. Second, consumers must be kept engaged and connected to the brand even when they are not really watching just video content. The latter is where gaming comes into play. “The most popular characters that we have around in the kids segment encourage us to really build some engaging games for kids, and we will continue to launch such games throughout the year,” says Kumar.

He explains that all social media platforms are rigorously used to generate traction amongst consumers. “We use all the mediums available at our disposal to generate traction and that’s an investment that we have been making and will continue making as it is clearly in line with us using these platforms as long-term consumer destinations. This will engage the consumers and help us use all platforms to market our products to reach our goal,” he says.

But how does Nick plan to make moolah out of these activities? “By primarily focusing on advertisers as they shift their attention to digital platforms. The main strategy is to be able to build our own properties, whether it’s online or mobile, which then becomes fertile ground for advertisers and marketers to partner with us on,” replies Kumar.

According to the KPMG FICCI 2013 report, the digital advertising market is pegged at Rs 21.7 billion and has grown at 40 per cent from 2011 to 2012. It is expected to be Rs 28.3 bn in 2013 and Rs 87 bn by 2017 growing at a CAGR of 31.1 per cent.

“All the indicators today show the time spent on the digital medium by the target audience that we are speaking about, so it only makes sense to not only monetise on the current scenario but also to build future-ready properties across each of these,” rounds off Kumar.

With the 2013 BCG report estimating that the number of children in the country expected to come online by 2017 is likely to more than triple to 134 million from about 40 million in 2012, Nick India certainly seems to be making all the right noises in the right direction…

Hollywood BO expects three tentpoles to gross over $50 million over the weekend

MUMBAI: Hollywood box office seems to be glistening bright with the industry expecting the three tentpoles raking in over $50 million over the weekend. Leading amongst the three is Pixar‘s 3D toon prequelMonsters University with an opening of $25 to $28 million on Friday. While sources predict the animated flick to gross over $75 million, it is certain to be Pixar‘s second highest opening ever, even bigger than Cars and outsellingBrave, but behind Toy Story 3.Monster University is currently playing in 4,004 screens across 35 territories.

Placing No. 2 is Paramount and Skydance Productions‘ World Z which is looking smart at $20 million Friday and $50 mn – $55 mn over the weekend. This comes as a relief to the studio after all that pre-release bad buzz for Brad Pitt‘s zombie picture. Brad‘s zombies are crawling across 3,607 theatres world-wide.

Following closely is the last week‘s top opener Man of Steel with $17 million – $19 million. The ner Bros‘ and Legendary Pictures‘ red capped superhero soared across 4,207 screens with a world-wide collection of over $200 million in its first week and is expected to gross over $50 million over this weekend too.

Astonished by the performances, Hollywood executives comment that there‘s never been a 3-day weekend with 3 different movies doing $50 million domestic box office. Their statistics show only one original movie a year opening over $50 million since originals play better than franchises on account of people discovering them over the coming weeks.
