Cannes Lions launches Cannes Chimera competition

MUMBAI: The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has launched the fifth Cannes Chimera Competition, an initiative to engage the global creative industry in building public awareness and support for solutions to critical global development problems.

This year, the brief for the Cannes Chimera Competition calls for the development of a one-time brand activation that will attract massive public attention to the growing Global Citizen platform, and result in a surge of sign ups to the campaign, through email capture and Facebook.

Global Citizen, which recently launched its “Unlock your power” campaign to expand its global community, will create the largest, most effective platform in the world for people to share, communicate and take action on issues affecting the world’s poorest. Supported by major NGOs in the development space and a diverse group of corporate partners, it provides new ways for people to understand and follow issues they care about – from gender equality or health to water and sanitation.

Through content, campaigns, and events such as concerts and rallies, Global Citizen gives people a simple and easy way to use their voice to support global change. It builds on people’s desire for connection and their passion to do good, and shows them how their actions make a difference for people around the world.

“Being able to engage the global communications industry to lend their creativity to a campaign as worthwhile as Global Citizen is very special for us. It’s an innovative and large-scale project with an incredible ambition: to turn millions of us into global citizens that are willing to take action to help people living in the world’s poorest countries build a better life for themselves,” said Lions Festivals CEO Philip Thomas.

“We know there are millions of people out there who are willing to support global development issues, but they don’t know how to, or where to start. Global Citizen provides a forum where people can unlock their social power to take action on these critical issues, but we need creative ways to build awareness of the platform. We’re thrilled by the opportunity to partner with the Cannes Lions community to share this opportunity with the world,” added The Global Poverty Project CEO Hugh Evans.

The competition is free to enter and consists of filling out a one-page submission form. Open from 30 April, it closes on 27 May. A maximum of three winners will be chosen from the pool of entries, each receiving a contract for a maximum of $150,000 to make their winning activation a reality. All activations must then be executed between July and September 2015.

  • JWT India’s Tista Sen on Cannes Lions’ Glass Lion Jury

JWT India’s Tista Sen on Cannes Lions’ Glass Lion Jury

MUMBAI: J. Walter Thompson India national creative director & senior vice president Tista Sen is one of the nine members of the first Glass Lion: The Lion for Change jury that were announced by Cannes Lions.

The award, launched with the support of Leanin.Org, recognises work that breaks through unconscious gender bias and shatters stereotypical portrayals of men and women. It will be judged by an accomplished, diverse group who will bring a broad cross-section of cultural perspectives, insights and experience to the table.

IfWeRanTheWorld/MakeLoveNotPorn founder and CEO Cindy Gallop will be the president of the jury.

    The jury members are:

USA: IfWeRanTheWorld/MakeLoveNotPorn founder and CEO Cindy Gallop

Brazil: AlmapBBDO partner and co-president of the board Marcello Serpa

France: BETC managing director Catherine Emprin

UK: Mr President creative partner Laura Jordan Bambach

India: J. Walter Thompson national creative director & senior vice president Tista Sen

UK: Isobar chief executive officer and executive creative director Nick Bailey

USA: Leo Burnett chief creative officer Susan Credle

USA: Weber Shandwick president Gail Heimann

USA: The Representation Project founder & CEO Jennifer Siebel Newsom

USA: Head @HeForShe Campaign senior advisor to Under Secretary-General UN Women Elizabeth Nyamayaro

Lions Festivals CEO Philip Thomas said that they would be instrumental in helping to shape the future of the award, and, in turn, the industry. “We believe that marketing actively shapes culture, and the Glass Lion is part of our commitment to having a positive impact on this. The introduction of a new Lion is an opportunity to define both the category and what we hope the communications landscape might look like,” he said.

Stressing on the importance of the award in actively shaping industry change, Gallop said, “I want every single creative in every country around the world to desperately want to win the Glass Lion – because the work that wins this award represents The New Creativity: the gold standard for creative and sociocultural change in our industry.”

Bailey agreed, adding that the global, multi-disciplinary perspective of the jury would also play a role in how the work is judged. “It’s no secret that one gender and one viewpoint is over-represented in our industry, which means inevitably a certain viewpoint is over-represented. The Glass Lion seeks to redress that by recognising work that holds a mirror up to the world as it really is, rather than just as a minority of people see it. That’s why it’s particularly exciting to see not just a truly international mix in the jury, but also a mix of viewpoints from both within and from outside our industry,” he said.

The introduction of the Glass Lion: The Lion for Change follows on from the 2014 launch of the See It Be It initiative, created to address the industry’s gender imbalance by accelerating creative women’s careers in advertising. The three-day programme for 12 creative women is returning to Cannes Lions this year and nominations are now open. Successful candidates will receive airfares to Nice, a Classic Pass to the Festival and accommodation for the duration of the programme, which is being held from 21 – 24 June 2015.

  • Give a missed call and join HUL’s fight against corruption

Give a missed call and join HUL’s fight against corruption

MUMBAI: In 2011, when Anna Hazare led the anti-corruption movement along with the likes of Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal, the country fed up of the ailment joined in the momentum as well.

People, especially youngsters, wanting a better India, didn’t hesitate to step out of their comfort zone and take the matter in their hands.

Be it a metro or a small village, corruption can be seen everywhere. This anti-social element is not only killing India’s value system, ethical codes and moral chains but also the economy. To counter it, many including brands are doing their bit to change the system.

Hindustan Unilever’s (HUL) Cannes Lions winner, Kan Khajura Tesan, has undertaken an initiative that will take the fight against corruption to every Indian’s doorstep. Since the issue strikes a chord with every Indian, the anticipated response might go on to create a world record.

This independence day week, Kan Khajura Tesan aims to set a world record by getting as many missed calls as possible in 120 hours from the people of India on its toll free number 1800-30-000-123. To pledge against corruption, the audience has to give a missed call on the number from their mobile phones. In return, Kan Khajura Tesan will donate Re 1 for every 100 missed calls received between 13 August and 17 August to the National Anti Corruption Investigation Bureau. Once the consumer gives a missed call to Kan Khajura Tesan, in a few seconds the consumer will receive a call back from the channel to confirm their participation in the endeavour to set a world record along with 20 minutes of free entertainment.

Hindustan Unilever vice president Priya Nair said, “Kan Khajura Tesan is one of India’s biggest, free and on-demand radio channels with over 1.4 crore subscribers and more than 25 crore minutes of radio engagement. With this initiative, we want to use this powerful platform to drive a social change. The initiative of pledging against corruption has never been attempted at this level anywhere in the world yet, and with the support of Indians we want to create a record of which every Indian can be proud.”

Kan Khajura Tesan, the country’s first free and on-demand entertainment mobile radio channel owned by HUL was launched in October 2013 in Bihar and Jharkhand and the service was expanded in August 2014 across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

  • Sunil Lulla will bring in a new dimension in our offering to clients: Nirvik Singh

Sunil Lulla will bring in a new dimension in our offering to clients: Nirvik Singh

When indiantelevision.com wrote about Sunil Lulla taking up a leadership position in Grey India, it did surprise many in the industry. Very few knew or recollected that Lulla’s roots have been in advertising: he was an account director at HTA (now JWT India) and had also taken the role of regional client servicing director on the Colgate Palmolive business with Y&R New York.

The announcement of his joining saw the departure of president & CEO Jishnu Sen. Lulla is taking over at Grey India at a time when it is in the midst of a grow-grow phase. On the global front, Grey was ranked as the agency of the year by adage.com for its revenue growth, client retention and the fact that it won almost all of the client pitches it made in 2013.

In India, Grey, the advertising network of the Grey Group, acquired a majority stake in rural and marketing communications services provider RC&M just as the year was drawing to a close.

It has done well on the awards front too, both in traditional and digital advertising.  It can be noted that Grey India picked up a Gold Lion at the Cannes this year in the Press category for the work done for P&G’s Duracell Batteries.

Indiantelevision.com’s Priyanka Nair got in touch with Grey Group Asia Pacific CEO Nirvik Singh to chat with him about the leadership change in India, and what he expects going forward.

    Excerpts:

With Sunil Lulla coming on board, what are the areas in which Grey India is looking at expanding?

We have been investing in India continually and with RC&M coming under our fold, I believe we have the right expertise and capabilities currently across the full marketing spectrum. Sunil Lulla would play a critical role in integrating and strengthening our offering.

In the 30 years of experience that Sunil Lulla has, he has been associated with the broadcast side of the business most. How do you think his expertise will help in the growth of Grey India?

With his 30 years of working experience, Sunil brings with him a wealth of knowledge from the media side of the business, not just broadcast. From our conversations, he has shown that he knows the heavily fragmented media landscape in South Asia in depth. By having him leading our operations in India, he is able to add a new dimension in our offering to our clients.

How has the year 2014 been so far for Grey India?

2014 has been really good for Grey Group, not just in India but across Asia Pacific as well. We are seeing clients in the market increasing their marketing spend with us, both regional and local clients. All in all, I expect India to be a really strong performer at year end. Malvika Mehra (National Creative Director) and team have been performing consistently as well – they have brought home yet another Gold Lion from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. This is their second year in a row they are doing so.

What are the plans lined up for the digital side of your business?

Sudhir Nair (Senior Vice President, Head of Grey Digital India) will be working closely with Sunil on this, but I must say our digital team has been stellar in their creative solutions and output (using Twitter to launch a car and YouTube for a test drive). Digital is definitely a big part of the picture and the continued investment in talent and capabilities is top of our priorities.

What is at top of your wish list for Grey India?

Win more Cannes Lions next year!

Till when will Jishnu Sen be with Grey India? Could you elaborate on the experience of working with him?

It has been a truly great journey – I have seen him grow into the CEO’s role and he is a great chap to work with.

  • “Our effort has been to get everyone involved”: Srinivasan Swamy

“Our effort has been to get everyone involved”: Srinivasan Swamy

MUMBAI: With big names dropped out, entry numbers has changed the shape of the event, which is now set to go indoors. The much talked about ninth edition of Goafest is expected to have a low turnout. While much is talked about this, here is a look at what the managing committee has to say.

In conversation with indiantelevision.com Goafest Organising Committee chairman Srinivasan Swamy, speaks at length about entry numbers, what to expect from the event this year and much more…

What are efforts being taking from the Goafest committee for those who are not participating in the fest this year?

Goafest is an industry initiative. It is not a private enterprise. So we want all members of the industry to be a part of it. While some of them have not sent their entries for the awards this year, they are all expected to be part of the event. Our effort has been on to get everyone involved.

Considering that Cannes Lions will follow Goafest, do you think agencies are therefore giving Goafest a miss to focus more on much prestigious global event?

Cannes is two weeks away. While a few people go to Cannes, many come to Goa.

How are you planning to promote the fest this year?

Our promotion has started by emailers. All web media is supporting us by sending these mailers out.

How has the response from SAARC region been this year?

We don’t expect entries or delegates in hundreds. We will have the same number as we had in the past, which is on expected lines.

Do you think shifting the dates of the event has affected the participation?

It does appear so. Some of the people will be out on family holidays. And some speakers find this too close to Cannes and therefore can’t travel to India and later to France. But overall, the plusses and minuses always even out. The inconvenience of having this clash with the general elections was the major concern.

While a few big creative agencies have opted out of the fest, we have understood that digital agencies are really looking forward to it this year. Could you give us an idea about the entry numbers?

We have decent level of participation from digital agencies, about 400. This also tells you about the raise of the importance of this medium.

How has the response been for the new categories that were introduced this year?

I would say these are very good. We should close these with about 200 in number.

What are five things that agencies and delegates can expect from Goafest 2014?

To my mind the five things are:

    • Goafest is a nice platform for delegates to network and have a great time.

    • There will be something for everyone at Goafest. While some can enjoy the knowledge seminars, advertising conclave or the leadership summit, a few can enjoy the fun activities like aqua zorbing, foam and rain dance etc or take part in beach sports competitions. Participants can also come to just party and dance till late into the night. While seniors can meet at comfort in the CEO lounge and see what should be done for the industry or in which direction it should go.

    • The display zones where the shortlisted work can be reviewed, will be quite engaging for those interested in awards and what could win.

    • The opening and closing ceremonies and the award nights will be entertaining as well as celebratory in nature.

    • Opportunities to learn many new things through various eclectic lectures and at kiosks things that will surprise the regulars to Goafest.
