    Yiota Pagoulatos takes charge of communications at International Emmy Awards

    NEW YORK: Yiota Pagoulatos has been appointed director of communications and partnerships at the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the body that runs the International Emmy Awards. She  took up the role in New York this month.

    The move caps eight years running Pink Orchid International, her boutique consultancy advising global media and entertainment firms on executive messaging, thought leadership and visibility. Her clients ranged from China’s CCTV and India’s DocuBay to Korea’s Something Special and the Mongolian National Film Council. She also fronted campaigns and partnerships at global markets including Mipcom Cannes, Banff, ATF Singapore and the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film.

    Earlier, Pagoulatos spent nine years at Reed Midem, rising from coordinator to sales director. She handled sponsorships and content launches for clients including Lionsgate, DreamWorks, MGM, Miramax and Starz, managing multimillion-euro accounts and delivering high-profile premieres such as Power and The Book of Negroes.

    Her new brief at the Academy brings her back to the heart of international television, with a focus on growing the Emmys’ global partnerships and communications footprint.

    Mumbai: The Bharat Pavilion at the 77th Cannes Film Festival witnessed a momentous occasion as Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman unveiled the first look and teaser of his latest venture, a groundbreaking feature documentary titled “Headhunting to Beatboxing” directed by Rohit Gupta.

    The unveiling took place at the Bharat Pavilion at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, marking a proud moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.

    Present at the launch at the Bharat Pavilion in Cannes were Academy Award winner and Padma Bhushan recipient AR Rahman, director Rohit Gupta, Executive Producer Abu Metha  (Advisor to the Chief Minister, Government of Nagaland) and Executive Producer Theja Meru (Chairman TaFMA, Government of Nagaland) in addition to the other guests and dignitaries present.

    Headhunting to beatboxing directed by Rohit Gupta and Produced by AR Rahman explores the fascinating journey of rhythm and sound, tracing the evolution of music across cultures, tribes and generations. From the ancient traditions of headhunting tribes to the musical renaissance in the state, the documentary promises to take audiences on an immersive and enlightening musical anthropological odyssey.

    “Music has this transformative power to change society and to connect and bring relevance to existence. ‘Headhunting to Beatboxing’ is a celebration of this universal rhythm that unites humanity in its diverse expressions. We look forward to the start of its film festival journey and what better than Cannes which celebrates cinema to make the first announcement on the film” said AR Rahman, expressing his enthusiasm.

    “The germ of the idea came up when AR Rahman visited Nagaland to be part of the legendary Hornbill Festival. We knew we had to be part of it. The film is a collaboration of many creative minds, especially the TaFMA and masterfully captured by director Rohit Gupta. The real heroes are the musicians of Nagaland, who tell stories that go back to times immemorial and their music exemplifies the ambition of our youth.” said  Nagaland advisor to the chief minister Abu Metha.

    “Five years in the making, the journey of  this film has been a sort of metamorphosis for me. The rich and vibrant music today, transcending the scars of the past is something that truly blew me away during the making. I am excited to see audiences witness our hard work and the magic that exists in the music of Nagaland” added director Rohit Gupta.

    The film marks multiple award winner, Rahman’s second major foray into filmmaking as a producer, with his earlier production ’99 Songs’ which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. His vision behind the project stems from a desire to celebrate the universal language of music and its transformative power to transcend boundaries.

    “Headhunting to beatboxing” has been directed by Rohit Gupta and produced by AR Rahman, with Abu Metha, Adam J. Greig, Theja Meru, Rohit Gupta, Sheila Houlahan and Rohhit Daas serving as executive producers.

    Mumbai: As Indian films make waves across the globe and this year at Cannes with a film in each section of the festival, India’s Gubbara Entertainment is geared towards further championing Indian storytelling.

    A step towards this direction, Gubbara Entertainment founder &  producer Dimpy Agrawal announced a groundbreaking $1 million script development fund aimed at empowering Indian feature filmmakers. The announcement was made at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, where she and her team are additionally exploring co-productions across a slate developed by them.

    Reaffirming Gubbara Entertainment’s dedication to nurturing creativity and innovation in Indian cinema, Agrawal stated, “At Gubbara Entertainment, we recognise the transformative influence of storytelling. Our mission with this development fund is to champion diverse voices and narratives in cinema, resonating locally and globally.     In addition to launching the dedicated development fund, Gubbara Entertainment has developed a robust slate of long-form scripted and unscripted content.

    “We have vigorously been building our slate and are excited to put them on floors soon. In Cannes, we are looking to move forward with our conversations on a few co-productions currently under discussion,” added Agrawal.

    Mumbai: In the midst of the Cannes Film Festival’s dazzle, the Cannes Marketplace showcased a distinctive Indian film this year. “Tale of Rising Rani,” a Stripes Entertainment production, weaves an engaging tale set against the backdrop of rural India.

    Directed by Prakash Saini, produced by Geeta and Ashok Kumar Sharma with executive producer Kunal Rohra, “Tale of Rising Rani” takes audiences on a journey into the heart of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, where the Brij language resonates with the rhythm of daily life. Featuring a talented ensemble cast including Stuti Agrawal, Anju Gaur, Anant Saraswat, and Anil Yadav, the film presents a true story of the transformation of a young but exceptionally resilient girl called Rani.

    “The film is a story of overcoming obstacles and challenging societal norms,” explained director Prakash Saini. “Through the character of Rani, we explore themes of friendship, courage, and the pursuit of one’s destiny. It’s a narrative that I believe will resonate with audiences worldwide. My film is inspired by a true story that is why I feel compelled to tell this story.”

    The narrative chronicles Rani, whose dreams are curtailed by her conservative upbringing. Facing pressure from her father to wed post-school, she becomes intertwined with her friend Rinki’s plight, who is burdened by the village’s regressive customs. Resolute in her quest for autonomy, Rani sets out on a path of self-realization and defiance, challenging the status quo. The film will be released soon this year.

    Director Saini reflects, “Presenting our work to an international audience at Cannes was a phenomenal chance to initiate dialogues on its central issues. The film’s unique plot and genuine depiction of a girl’s struggle against traditional norms struck a chord with many viewers.”

    The Cannes Film Festival this year honours the variety and vibrancy of Indian filmmaking, with a notable lineup of seven films linked to India, heralding a significant year for the nation’s cinema at the festival.

    Mumbai: In a landmark moment for Hindi cinema, the Bharat Pavilion at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival is poised to unveil an exclusive sneak peek of the year’s most anticipated romantic musical thriller, “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha” starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu in lead roles. This Cannes-only exclusive showcase will happen on 17 May.

    Directed by Neeraj Pandey “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha” promises to take audiences on a rollercoaster, tracing the journey of love over 23 years. From 2000 to 2023, the film examines the complexities of mature love, exploring themes of enduring companionship and unwavering devotion.

    Oscar-winning M. M. Keeravani has composed the music for the film.

    Producer Shreyansh Hirawat of NH Studioz will be present for the exclusive sneak peek.

    Sajan Raj Kurup joins The Commandant’s Shadow as executive producer

    Mumbai: While India makes waves at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, it was announced on Friday (26 April 2024) in a statement by Warner Bros. Pictures and Fathom Events that Daniela Völker’s much-talked-about documentary The Commandant’s Shadow is set to release in 500 theatres across the U.S. on May 29, 2024, with an encore presentation the following day.

    A little-known fact is that this hard-hitting documentary also boasts a strong Indian connection, with noted creative head and entrepreneur Sajan Raj Kurup serving as Executive producer on the documentary film.

    Speaking about this Kurup said, “It is a proud moment for us at Creators Inc. and Creativeland Studios to be able to back The Commandant’s Shadow, a story that deserves telling, and we are happy to see it reach a wide audience with its upcoming release in the US.”

    The Commandant’s Shadow follows Hans Jürgen Höss, son of Auschwitz’s Commandant Rudolf Höss, confronting his father’s terrible legacy for the first time and as he is introduced to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, a Jewish survivor of the camp. Their historic meeting, eight decades later, in Anita’s London living room, alongside their children Kai Höss and Maya Lasker-Wallfisch, delves into their very different hereditary burdens and raises questions about love, guilt, and forgiveness. This feature-length documentary explores the trans-generational impact of war crimes, yet ultimately offers a story of hope, acceptance, and compassion.

    The documentary film is written, produced and directed by Daniela Völker and produced by Gloria Abramoff, with Wendy Robbins, Neil Blair, Jonathan Blair, Matti Leshem, Joel Greenberg, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Sajan Raj Kurup, Jani Guest and Jamie Jessop serving as executive producers. Völker’s creative team includes directors of photography Rob Goldie and Piotr Trela, editor Claire Guillon, and music composer Gabriel Chwojnik.

    Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with HBO Documentary Films, A Snowstorm Productions / Creators Inc.     Mumbai: The 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival for documentary, short fiction and animation films (MIFF-2022) began with an opening ceremony in Mumbai on Sunday.

    Speaking via a video message, the Union Minister for Information And Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said, “Documentary cinema creates the most significant impact. It not only educates, inspires and motivates a change in the society but also acts as a tool that transcends cultures and boundaries.”

    This edition will offer around 400 films from across the world. Out of these, 102 films will be screened under the competition category-35 in international competition and 67 in a national competition.

    The minister also mentioned that MIFF provides a platform where documentary filmmakers from all over the world get to exchange ideas and explore the possibilities of co-productions and marketing of documentary, short and animation films. He added that this opportunity eventually broadens the vision of the film-makers vis-à-vis world cinema.

    Speaking in this context, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles,  Piyush Goyal said that those who produce art films, documentary films and animation films are kind of a ‘Start-Up’ seeding new ideas and play the role of messengers in the country.

    He said there are multiple avenues like the silver screen, television, OTT, etc, available to spread the message across the world, thus allowing such ‘start-ups’ to become ‘Unicorns’.

    Goyal said that Lata Mangeshkar was an inspiration for many artistes and musicians & through art she took India’s history, tradition and heritage to the world. “Let us explore ways as to how we can institutionalise Lata Didi’s role for the country, the city of Mumbai and the Cinema world itself.”

    The Minister of State for Information And Broadcasting, Dr L. Murugan in his address spoke about the efforts made to promote Indian Cinema globally. He also pointed out how India has made a greater presence at the Cannes Film Festival and said Shaunak Sen’s film “All That Breathes” made India proud by winning the best documentary award.

    The minister said that the government has announced incentives for international filmmakers and co-productions, especially for feature films, animation films, documentary films and web series.  “AVGC sector promotion is happening in a great way. The prime minister (PM) called for Digital India and Startup India and the Indian contingent at Cannes showcased our culture and ethos,” he proudly recalled.

    The seven-day festival was organised by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and inaugurated by Piyush Goyal.
