Amazing Spiderman to have largest Hollywood release in India

NEW DELHI: The Amazing Spiderman, one of the few films from Hollywood that is being released in India on 29 June prior to its international release on 4 July, will open with over 1000 prints which is the largest ever release for a Hollywood film in the country.

The film will release in 3D, 2D and IMAX formats, and in four languages – English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Sony Pictures Managing Director Kercy Daruwala said: “The Amazing Spider-Man is fittingly our biggest release ever in the country. The fact that Spider-Man is the most consistently successful movie franchise in India combined with an increased audience in dubbed versions, growth of 3D, the pre-US release date and a local connect in the film, has led to a record demand for prints.”

The Motion Picture Distributors Association India, the Indian arm of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) representing the six major Hollywood studios, is beefing up its enforcement action across the country in preparation for the release.

MPDA (India) managing director Uday Singh said, “With every big film release comes the threat of Content Theft through Camcording in cinemas and movie downloads through illegal websites. We have chalked out a strong enforcement action plan to keep Camcording pirates at bay and urge movie loving audiences to watch The Amazing Spider-Man at the nearest theatre.”

One of the world’s most popular comic characters, the Spiderman is back with an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker tale. The new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, and India’s Irrfan Khan with Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures.

MUMBAI: ITV has inked an exclusive UK deal with Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) for the licensing of Six Degrees, a new drama series from J.J. Abrams (creator of Lost) to air on its flagship channels ITV1 and 2. This makes Six Degrees the first US series to be aired in primetime on ITV1 in nine years.

Six Degrees follows New Yorkers from all walks of life, whose lives unexpectedly become intertwined. The show will air in the US on the ABC Television Network this autumn in a primetime slot, following Grey’s Anatomy. Six Degrees is a story that underlines just how small the world really is, and how someone, just five metres away might be shaping our future right now.

The show stars Jay Hernandez (Friday Night Lights), Erika Christensen (Flightplan), Bridget Moynahan (Sex and the City), Dorian Missick (Lucky Number Slevin), Hope Davis (About Schmidt) and Campbell Scott (The Secret Lives of Dentists). Its executive producers are J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk (Lost, Alias), Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner (Elektra), and it is produced by Touchstone Television.

ITV director of acquisitions Jay Kandola said, “My aim was to get brand defining shows for the ITV Network. I am delighted that Six Degrees will be a contemporary exciting new addition to the ITV1 and ITV2 offering.”

BVITV EMEA executive vice president and managing director Tom Toumazis added, “As US series continue to return to primetime around the world, we are delighted to be working with ITV to launch Six Degrees in primetime on ITV1. We are sure that the series’ production pedigree and strong cast will appeal strongly to a UK audience.”

The agreement was closed by ITV’s Kandola and BVITV executive director sales, UK and Ireland Catherine Powell.
