    Sony & CFC partner for Chinese remake of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures and China Film Co. (CFC) have joined hands to co-produce the Chinese remake of My Best Friend’s Wedding.

     

    The film, slated for release in China on Valentine’s Day 2016, features Shu Qi, Feng Shaofen, Song Qian aka Chinese singer and actress Victoria Song and Ye Qing.

     

    Sony’s original film, which released in 1997, starred Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett.

     

    Shooting will begin in late July this year in London, Italy and Beijing.

     

    Alexi Tan will direct and produce the Chinese remake his company, Play Productions.

     

    In the film, Journalists Gu Jia and Lin Ran have grown up together as best friends. One day, Lin Ran calls Gu Jia from the UK telling her that he is getting married to someone he only just met, a wealthy Chinese girl who has been studying in the UK, and asks Gu Jia to be his “best man.” Gu Jia finally realizes that she loves him, not just as a friend, and sets out for London a few days before the wedding determined to win him back.

     

    Hong Jiu, Fu Linran and Alexi Tan wrote the script. Jiu has published several popular online novels including We Live Together.

     

    “We are delighted to be collaborating with Columbia Pictures on this exciting remake of what has become an international comedy classic,” said China Film Co., Ltd executive Ling Hong.

     

    Sony Pictures China head of production and strategic development Dede Nickerson added, “We are thrilled to be working with our partner China Film, Alexi and this incredible cast to create what is sure to be a hilarious and touching film for the Chinese audience.”

     

    Columbia Pictures is also currently in post-production on director Chen Kaige’s dark comedy Monk Comes Down the Mountain starring Wang Baoqiang, Aaron Kwok, Chang Chen, Chiling Lin, VanNess Wu and Fan Wei, based on the novel of the same name by Xu Haofeng. The film is currently in post-production and scheduled for release on 3 July, 2015.

     

    Sony has previously co-produced Kung Fu Hustle (2004) and Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).

The story revolves around the action packed life of three angels who investigate a series of murders which occur after the theft of a witness protection profile database. Next in the line-up on December 14th is Transformers starring Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel, a science fiction action film based on the Transformers toy line. The film combines computer animation with live-action. The next movie on 21st December is Mission Impossible 3 starring Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan and Ving Rhames. The story follows the action-packed mission of Ethan Hunt who comes face to face with a dangerous and sadistic arms dealer while trying to keep his identity secret in order to protect his girlfriend. Culminating the festive programming is the light hearted, fast-moving animation film Kung Fu Panda on 28th December, a movie that fits every age group and has been exceedingly loved and adored by all.

    MUMBAI: On 31 March, Sony Pictures released the first trailer of their upcoming film, Sex Tape which revolves around the time when Jay (Segel) and Annie (Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark.

    To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world… but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for.

    How I Met Your Mother star, Jason Segel stars alongside Golden Globe Award nominee Cameron Diaz (Charlie’s Angels, Bad Teacher) in this romantic comedy from Kate Angelo, the writer and producer of Will & Grace and What About Brian.     MUMBAI: Sony Pictures has just released the first trailer of the Annie reboot which showcases Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.  Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. 

     

    But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

     

    Along with Wallis, the film also stars Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx (Ray), Cameron Diaz (Charlie’s Angels), Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Oz) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire).

    MUMBAI: Javier Bardem, the baddie from Skyfall and No Country For Old Men may soon be playing another negative character. Reports suggest that the actor has been approached by Warner Bros. for the role of the lead villain, Blackbeard for its untitled Peter Pan project.

     

    The actor was recently seen in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor along with his real-life wife Penelope Cruz and among others like Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt. He will next be seen in The Gunman with Sean Penn and Idris Elba.

     

    Warner Bros. is also in talks with Joe Wright to direct the film from the Jason Fuchs script. While till now the plot details are being kept under wraps, the announcement has garnered a lot of attention. The film is certain to bring back the characters created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie about a boy who can fly and never ages.

    Rob Corddry in talks to join Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel in ‘Sex Tape’

    MUMBAI: Rob Corddry is in negotiations to join Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel in Sony’s Sex Tape, which Jake Kasdan is directing.

     

    The story revolves around a husband (Segel) and wife (Diaz) who take a night off from the kids and decide to spice things up by making a sex tape. When they wake up the next morning, the tape is missing, and the search is on.

     

    Corddry will play the couple’s friend who goes along on the adventure. Sex Tape is eyeing a shoot in the fall, with Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch producing.

     

    Corddry is in the middle of a busy period. He just wrapped filming Hot Tub Time Machine 2, for which he also helped craft the story, and can be seen on screens in The Way, Way Back. This year he also appeared in Warm Bodies and Pain & Gainand stars with Lake Bell in the indie comedy In a World, which Roadside Attractions opens 9 August.

     

    Childrens Hospital, the Adult Swim comedy he created and stars in, is coming off its second Emmy nomination. (Corddry also created the Adult Swim series Newsreaders, which wrapped its first season.)

     

    The funnyman is repped by WME and Principato-Young Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson.

    CBS orders a new comedy ‘Bad Teacher’ for 2013-2014 season

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster CBS has ordered the comedy ‘Bad Teacher’ for the 2013-2014 season.

     

    It is based on the film, which starred Cameron Diaz. The TV show stars Ari Graynor as an always inappropriate, fearless and unapologetic former trophy wife who masquerades as a teacher in order to find a new man after her wealthy husband leaves her penniless.

    Hilary Winston, Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky, Sam Hansen, Jimmy Miller and Michael Lasker are executive producers for Sony Pictures Television in association with CBS Television Studios and Mosaic Media Group.

    MUMBAI: After a small break, director Ridley Scott returned to the sets for the first time since his brother Tony Scott committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. It is still a mystery why he committed suicide, with claims he had terminal brain cancer denied by his family.

    It is said that the 74-year-old Gladiator helmer looked strained and tired as he walked around the sets of his new film The Counsellor.

    The Counsellor consists of a star-studded cast that includes Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz.

    After it emerged that Tony Scott had plunged to his death from a harbour bridge in Los Angeles last month, Ridley Scott had immediately called a halt to the production.

    Bad Teacher crosses $ 200 million mark

    MUMBAI: This summer, Sony’s Bad Teacher has become the third R-rated comedy to cross the $200 million mark worldwide.


    The film that stars Cameron Diaz hit the milestone over the weekend, earning $2.2 million at the foreign box office for a new international cumulative total of $102.6 million.


    The film, also starring Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake, has grossed $98.1 million domestically for a world total of $200.7 million.


    The film’s better-than-expected performance means strong profit margins for Sony that made the film for under $20 million. The studio purchased Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky’s script in 2008.


    Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part II, that opened in theatres on 26 May has earned a whopping $581.2 million worldwide followed by Universal’s Bridesmaids that has grossed $272.9 million globally since its release on 13 May.


    The summer’s other notable R-rated comedy is New Line and Warners’ Horrible Bosses that has, to date, totaled $170.4 million worldwide.
