Ramakrishnan (Ramki), managing director – South Asia at Kantar Worldpanel, as an independent director on its board. In his new role, Ramakrishnan will participate in the strategic business decisions of The Script Room bringing his deep market knowledge, experience and thought leadership to the table.

    Cafe Coffee Day appoints Malavika Hegde as CEO

    NEW DELHI: Coffee Day Enterprises has appointed Malavika Hegde as CEO of the company. She has been the non-executive director of the organisation and will assume the new role starting 7 December.

    The company announced the development in a BSE filing.

    Hegde is former Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna's daughter and the wife of late V G Siddhartha, the Cafe Coffee Day founder and CEO who died due to drowning in 2019.

    Siddhartha, who was dubbed the coffee baron of India, was widely recognised for having brought the coffee shop culture to a largely tea-loving country. However, the success story of Cafe Coffee Day came to an ignominious turning point when the founder plunged to his death in the Nethravathi river in an apparent suicide, raising speculations that the company was in dire financial straits.

    Cafe Coffee Day runs hundreds of coffee shops across India that brew cappuccinos and lattes for Indians. It was launched in 1996 and is present in over 200 plus cities. It competes with big players such as Starbucks Corp, Barista, Costa Coffee and others.

    MUMBAI: Following the tragic demise of Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) founder VG Siddhartha, who was also known as the ‘Coffee King’ of India, the company board has made some key appointments in the top management. It has also resolved to thoroughly investigate the matters related to financial transactions, which were made outside the knowledge of the senior management, auditors, and the board, and were mentioned in Siddhartha’s last letter to his team and employees.  

    The Board has appointed SV Ranganath as the interim chairman of the board and Nitin Bagmane as an interim chief operating officer of the company. It has also constituted an executive committee comprising non-executive independent director SV Ranganath and CFO R Ram Mohan to exercise the powers previously vested with the chief executive officer of the company and the administrative committee constituted by the board in 2015.

    It mentioned in a statement, “The board will, in due course, prepare a detailed charter of authorities vested in the executive committee and approve the same. The executive committee will, inter alia, explore opportunities to deleverage the Coffee Day group.”

    VG Siddhartha went missing in the evening of 29 July while he was on his way to Mangaluru from Bengaluru. Around 6.30 pm, he asked his driver to stop the car at a bridge near Ullala and did not return. A panicked driver informed his family and the police. Siddhartha’s body was recovered from Netravathi river, today morning.

    Before allegedly committing suicide, he had sent his employees a letter indicating that he is in debt. He also mentioned that tax authorities were harassing him.

    Taking in account the same, the board wrote in its statement, “The board took cognizance of statements in the purported letter from VG Siddhartha relating to financial transactions outside the knowledge of the senior management, auditors and the board. While the authenticity of the letter is unverified and it is unclear whether these statements pertain to the company or the personal holdings of VG Siddhartha, the board took serious note of the same and resolved to thoroughly investigate this matter.”

    Uber Eats, CCD partner to launch India’s largest virtual restaurant network

    MUMBAI: Uber Eats, the world’s largest food delivery network and Café Coffee Day, India’s largest café chain, have announced a partnership to launch the country’s largest network of virtual restaurants, which will soon bring foodies a greater choice of ‘delivery-only’ restaurant brands exclusively on the Uber Eats app.

    The first restaurant brand under this partnership is scheduled to launch in November.

    This partnership will leverage Café Coffee Day’s robust and innovative F&B expertise, pan India café network with the technology that Uber Eats is renowned for. Uber Eats will help Café Coffee Day with data, analytics and insights to help identify food or cuisines that consumers crave the most. This will enable Café Coffee Day and Uber Eats to launch menu offerings as per evolving consumer trends, for multiple ‘delivery-only’ virtual restaurants.

    Uber Technologies vice president Jason Droege says, “Using experience and lessons learnt in the virtual restaurant space from our global operations, we hope to provide our Indian restaurant partners greater growth opportunities. Our customers too will enjoy ordering and eating their favourite everyday meals at the tap of a button.”

    Café Coffee Day chief executive officer Venu Madhan adds, “With this association we aim to take the goodwill and trust earned in the F&B space and combine it with new age reality of virtual restaurants to offer everyday meals that can be delivered to nomadic millennials at home or at work in a convenient manner. Uber Eats’s strength and expertise in the business of home delivery will ensure delight to millions of aspiring youngsters who have moved away from their homes with great quality products from Café Coffee Day’s virtual restaurants every day across the country.”

    Virtual restaurants are digital-only eateries that allow business owners to explore new culinary options and reach a wider audience by using the space in their existing kitchen. Virtual restaurants allow partners to test new opportunities in today’s dynamic market in a nimble manner.

    Uber Eats is currently present in 37 cities in India with a strong presence in tier 2 cities. In the last 3 months, the number of orders on the app has grown 6 times and Uber Eats is adding 100 new restaurants to its platform everyday. Café Coffee Day currently has a network of 1742 cafes across 246 cities in India.

    Uber Eats started in 2014 as a small delivery pilot in Los Angeles and launched as a separate application in Toronto in December 2015. Since then, it has grown incredibly fast, and is now a stand-alone app available in 350+ cities around the globe. In India, Uber Eats was first launched in Mumbai in May 2017.
